A message from the
Chancellor
To determine our own destiny, we must create our own path. Over the past several years, UNCG has taken steps to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. We have completed academic realignments as well as the most comprehensive academic program review in our University’s history. We have accomplished energy savings, made improvements in procurement processes, and used technology to reduce costs. Because more can and must be done to realize cost savings, we are also working vigorously to identify alternative sources of revenue to enable us to thrive in the years ahead. More than 200 student-athletes depend on these sources of revenue to fund scholarships and endowments for them to strive for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Today’s incoming student-athletes demonstrate that quality and diversity reinforce one another —UNCG has simultaneously enhanced the quality and the diversity of entering freshman classes. Our students are better prepared for a challenging learning environment that inspires a quest for discovery, the desire to see the world from multiple perspectives, and the confidence to find one’s place in it. We are inspired by the support of the Spartan Club members and friends of the athletic department who continue to enhance our scholarship and endowment programs. We are Spartans! This past year has shown how competitive and strong our athletes can be during competition, in the classroom and in the community. We continue to strive for excellence and representing the Spartan Way. In the following pages, you will see the accomplishments from the past year from our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and support staff.
We continue to enhance the experience of our studentathletes during their time here and depend on the generosity of our donors to achieve our financial goals for scholarships and other urgent needs. We set an all-time record in our scholarship fund last year and we sincerely appreciate all the gifts we received to help make that happen. Your belief and loyalty allows us to continue to support our student-athletes and coaches, as well as recruit the most qualified students that will continue the Spartan legacy. Graduating magna cum laude in May 2013 with a GPA of 3.61 and 3.74 respectively, Shaina and Chelsea decided to return to UNCG for their redshirt senior year on the women’s cross country and track team while pursuing a master’s in speech pathology. In their graduate program, the Sumney twins work with various clients of all different ages to help with a wide range of speech impediments during weekly clinicals. Shaina plans to specialize in adult neurogenics or the dysphagia population and work in a skilled nursing facility or hospital. Chelsea hopes to work with the elderly or in a rehabilitation hospital helping stroke and dementia patients regain communication and preserve activities in daily life. Interesting Fact: The last set of female twins at UNCG were members of the women’s soccer team and also pursued a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Speech Pathology.

Men’s Soccer l Helsinki, Finland International Business Major l Class of 2014
Mahdi was born in Somalia in 1990 and in ’92, his father left to get an education and a visa for the family. By ’93, the family moved to Finland, where Mahdi grew up. His soccer coach in Finland knew Justin Maullin, the coach at UNCG, a connection that led to Mahdi coming to UNCG and receiving a scholarship to play soccer. During his one year mandatory military service, he was given a two hour pass to practice soccer. He was training to be a sniper, but just six months after meeting with Coach Maullin, he came to UNCG and was admitted only two weeks before school started. He has made an impact as a four-year starter for the team and hopes to stay in the United States after he graduates, continuing his soccer career or possibly pursuing an MBA.

“Since I was 14, I have made it my goal to direct a feature length film in Hollywood. I am fascinated by the stories that movies can tell and the way the camera can influence an audience. I have done a large range of video work, but my most recent work includes the UNCG baseball intro video and the UNCG senior banquet video. These videos were a great way for me to mix the two most important parts of my life, film and baseball. The unique experience I have had as a student and an athlete at UNCG has been irreplaceable.�

Student-Athlete Profile Lucy Mason
Women’s Basketball l Stone Mountain, Ga. African American Studies & Economics Major l Class of 2016
Lucy Mason was the break out freshman on the women’s basketball team this past year, quickly becoming one of the top ranked freshmen for points per game in the country. Although she focused on the game, it didn’t distract her from going above and beyond in the classroom in pursuit of a double major in African American Studies and Economics. After being selected as the SoCon Freshman of the Year, she also maintained a 4.0 grade point average to match her excellence on the court. She claims that her success in the classroom and on the court is a result of her time management skills and of her ability to ask questions and accept help. Lucy has also stepped up as an active member in the Student Athlete Advisory Council and African American Studies Club. As for the future, Lucy states that she is determining how to pair both majors and deciding on where to go from there, but her goal for her team is to win a conference title before leaving UNCG.
