Student-athletes at UNCG have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the years. Although the athletic department celebrated its 45th season in 2010-11, athletics at UNCG date back to the 1940s in the days before the university became co-ed.

Golfer Nancy Porter, who went on to a successful pro career, is regarded as one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, competing in tournaments on the national level in the late 1940s.

In 1963, as the university prepared to go co-ed, UNCG began to formally organize athletic teams. Women’s basketball, under head coach Ellen Griffin, women’s tennis, women’s golf and field hockey were started. LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann was on one of the early UNCG women’s golf teams.

In 1967, UNCG began men’s athletics and the intercollegiate athletics program received formal recognition from the university. In the fall of 1967, the Spartan was adopted as the program’s mascot.

In 1968, UNCG’s men’s teams joined the Dixie Athletic Conference, known today as the USA South Conference, on the NCAA Division III level. Women’s teams competed as part of the AIAW early on, with UNCG being one of the lead organizers of the organization.

Two of the first men’s sports were basketball and bowling.

In 1971, with the emergence of the five-player rule in women’s basketball, UNCG finished fourth in the National Collegiate Tournament.

Two years later, the women’s golf team won the AIAW national title – UNCG’s first-ever team national crown. Porter coached the squad and future professional golfer Donna Horton White was on the squad.

Since then, UNCG has enjoyed a number of successes: • Five national titles in men’s soccer during the 1980s and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis.

• An unprecedented five-year move from Division III to Division II to Division I -- went from Division III in 1987, to Division II in 1988-90 and have been Division I since 1991.

• A trip to the “Big Dance” – the NCAA men’s basketball tournament – in just its fifth year of Division I status.

• Men’s soccer coach Michael Parker and women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee were the first to lead teams to the NCAA tournament

in all three divisions.

• A baseball squad built from scratch by Mike Gaski that made it to the NCAA tournament in just its fifth season of play.

• A men’s soccer program that conquered all comers for two months to become the No. 1 team in the nation in 2004, the beginning of UNCG’s three straight NCAA tournament Round of 16 appearances and four in five years.

• Kyle Hines, who became just the sixth player in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career.

• Individuals like wrestler Dock Kelly, who overcame birth defects that left him without legs, qualifying for the NCAA Championship.

• Students like Siggi Eyjolffson, who earned Academic All-American honors three times.

• Men’s basketball games moved off campus to the Greensboro Coliseum, one of the premier facilities in the country.

From major league pitcher Brian Moehler to MLS champion Alejandro Moreno to LPGA star Becky Morgan, Spartan alumni have gone on to successful careers in sports. That success isn’t just limited to the playing field, either. The late Doug Hamilton was one of the pioneers within MLS and played on the UNCG national championship teams of the 1980s.

Eyjolffson returned to his native Iceland and is one of the top people in his native country’s soccer federation, currently serving as their women’s national team head coach.

13th Season As Head Coach • Lenoir-Rhyne, 1994 Terrance Stewart enters his 12th season as the head men’s golf coach at UNCG in 2012-13.

Stewart has been at the helm of the program since August 15, 2001.

In his 11 seasons leading the program, the Spartans have finished in the top five in the Southern Conference Championships seven times, including a program-best second place finishes in 2011 and 2004. In 2011, the Spartans posted an 866 team score to finish just five shots off Georgia Southern’s lead at the Country Club of South Carolina.

Stewart has led seven individuals to top five finishes at the SoCon Championships during his tenure, highlighted by the 2007 individual title won by J.D. Bass. Bass posted a 3-under par 213 (72-73-68) two win the SoCon title by one stroke.

Additionally, Ryan Heisey (2010) and Nathan Stamey (2008) posted runner-up finishes in the league championship under Stewart’s guidance.

Stewart has coached 13 All-Southern Conference selections in 11 years, including multiple selections in both 2006 and 2011. The Spartans have also placed one player on the five-member SoCon All-Freshman Team each year since its inception in 2009, including current Spartan Alex Ehlert last year.

The 2011 SoCon Championships saw the Spartans post their best team finish as tournament runner-up just five strokes off the pace. Will Almand led UNCG with a 2-under par fourth place finish while Kyle Sonday (8th), Robert Hoadley (15th) and Andy Knox (25th) rounded out the Spartans in the top 25. Both Hoadley and Sonday earned All-SoCon honors in 2011 as well.

The 2009-10 campaign saw Hoadley earn All-SoCon honors and All-Freshman accolades while winning his first collegiate tournament, the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. UNCG posted two team titles during the season with a remarkable 11-shot comeback on the final day of the Georgetown Intercollegiate as well as the Towson Invitational title where it placed five golfers in the top 12 individually. The Spartans capped the season with a third place finish at the SoCon Championships with a 3-over par score of 867.

In 2008-09, Stewart directed the Spartans to a trio of top-five team finishes during the season. UNCG placed third at the Palma Del Mar while posting fifth place finishes at both the Bridgestone Collegiate and the Towson Intercollegiate. Will Bowman tied for fifth at the SoCon Championship and earned All-Southern Conference honors. He also picked up his first career win during the season, taking medalist honors at the Palma Del Mar Intercollegiate.

The 2007-08 season was a memorable one for the Spartans as Stamey finished second at the Southern Conference Championship with a 1-under par 215. He also became the first Spartan in the NCAA Division I era to earn a spot as an individual in the NCAA postseason and the first Spartan at any level to earn a spot in the postseason since 1981.

In 2006-07, the Spartans finished fifth in the Southern Conference Championship. The team was led by Bass, who won the individual championship with a 3-under par 213, marking the Spartans first individual champion as a member of the SoCon. Additionally, UNCG captured the title at the 2006 Sam Hall Intercollegiate, ending with a six-under-par 845, a school-record 54-hole total. Following the win, the Spartans were named Golfweek’s National Men’s Collegiate Team of the Week. As a team, UNCG also finished second at both the Cavalier Classic (892) and the Mission Inn Collegiate Invite (874).

In his fifth season at UNCG, Stewart helped the Spartans to seven top-10 finishes, including three top-five finishes in 200506. UNCG placed seventh at the Southern Conference Championships and were led by Stamey’s fourth-place finish, which earned him second team All-Conference honors.

In 2004-05, UNCG placed fourth at the SoCon Championships, while Jake Lowder and Bass were each named to the SoCon All-Conference team for their efforts during the course of the season. Led by Stamey’s first-place finish in the opening tournament of the season, the Spartans took home second-place honors at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate. In a second tourney hosted by UNCG, the Spartans picked up a third-place finish at the Forest Oaks Intercollegiate – what is now UNCG’s an-

2013-14 UNCG M e n ’ s G o l f nual fall Bridgestone Collegiate – in the final tournament of the regular season. Sandwiched in between, Stewart watched as the Spartans posted top-five finishes in five of their other seven regular-season tournaments, including a second-place showing at the 49er Collegiate Classic.

The 2003-04 campaign was a breakthrough season as the Spartans posted a tie for second at the SoCon Championship, which represented the best finish in school history. In March 2004, the Spartans claimed top honors at the Winthrop-Waterford Invitational. The tournament crown for the Spartans was their first since the 1999-2000 season, when UNCG took top honors at the Southern California Intercollegiate. Andy Bare and Bass took home medalist honors in two tournaments each. Bare was named First Team All-SoCon for the second consecutive season while Nick Baker was named Second-Team All-SoCon. In just his second season, Stewart guided the Spartan squad to a fifth-place finish in the 2003 SoCon Championship. At the time, it was the program’s best finish in its six-year history in the Southern Conference.

In his first season at UNCG, Stewart led a very young Spartan squad to a seventh-place finish at the 2002 SoCon tournament. The Spartans’ top three performers were all freshmen.

FIFTH season as assistant Coach Dr. Bob Christina, a nationally recognized authority on the psychology of golf learning and perfomance is in this fifth season as an assistant coach for the UNCG men’s golf team. He currently serves as golf research and educational consultant to the Pinehurst Golf Academy, PGA of America, LPGA T&C, Golf Magazine and its Top 100 Teachers, Precision Golf School of the Triad and the Steering Committee of the World Scientific Congress of Golf.

In 2008, he was named one of Golf Magazine’ Innovators of the Year along with former Tour greats Arnold Palmer, Lee Elder and several others. In 2009, his research with Eric Alpenfels (Director of the Pinehurst Golf Academy) on how to practice golf skills to learn to effectively take them to golf course won The Outstanding Research Award at the World Scientific Congress of Golf. He and Eric have published over 30 research-based articles (eight of which were cover stories) on the learning and performance of golf skills in Golf Magazine since 2003. Some of their golf research has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and he has appeared on the Golf Channel, NBC and CNN. Their 2005 article titled A New Way to Putt that appeared as a cover story in Golf Magazine won the National Magazine’s Editor’s Award, which was the first time any golf magazine has ever won this award. Emanating from this putting article and their research was a book titled Instinct Putting that was published in 2009.

“Obviously, to have someone of Dr. Christina’s knowledge and ability join our staff is phenomenal,” head coach Terrance Stewart said upon Christina’s hiring. He has been a great asset to our program.”

Early in his career, Dr. Christina coached various sports (including golf) at the high school and university levels. He spent most of his professorial and academic career at Penn State University before coming to UNCG as Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance and Professor of Kinesiology in 1992. During his 35-year academic career he distinguished himself as a researcher, scholar, teacher and administrator. He has authored more than 150 scientific and professional articles and 11 books. A prolific speaker, he has given over 400 scholarly and professional presentations throughout the United States and abroad; and he served on a National Research Committee of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Christina, who holds a Bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College and Master’s and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Maryland, retired as Dean and Professor from UNCG in 2001. Currently, he holds the academic title of Emeritus Dean of the School of Health and Human Sciences and Professor of Kinesiology.

Dr. Linda Brady - Chanellor

Dr. Linda P. Brady became the 10th chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on August 1, 2008. Previously she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Under her leadership UNCG has won numerous awards and recognitions, including designation by Dr. Carolyn R. Ferree Forbes as a “Best Buy,” inclusion among Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges, recognition by the 2012 Linda Hiatt G.I. Jobs List as a “military friendly” school, named a campus sustainability leader in the College SustainRandall R. Kaplan ability Report Card 2011, and recognition as one of the nation’s most affordable public universities by M. Lee McAllister the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Brady is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Partnership, a founding member of Opportunity Greensboro (a collegiate-business partnership), a member of the Greensboro Rotary, and a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She chairs the 2011 Campaign for the United Way of Greater Greensboro.

She is a native New Yorker and the first member of her family to attend college. She earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, a master’s degree in political scien ce from Rutgers University, and her doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University.

From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Brady was an analyst with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense, a period covering both the Carter and Reagan administrations. She served as defense adviser to the Negotiations on Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria and held the same position during the Negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Brady also supported the negotiation and implementation of prepositioning and logistical support agreements with members of NATO and with countries in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. She received the U.S. Department of State Superior Honor award for her work in support of the theater nuclear forces program.

Dr. Brady was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at the United States Military Academy in 1991-92. She has served on the board of the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Brady is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Army. She served as Senior Fellow for Arms Control at the Carter Center of Emory University from 1986 to 1988.

Dr. Brady is married to Gustav “Steve” Heyer, a retired Army officer. She has two adult stepsons and three grandchildren: Stephen Heyer and his wife, Suzanne, live in Richmond, VA with their children Alyx, Megan and Andrew Casey, while Michael Heyer lives in Chicago, IL.

Kim Record - Director of Athletics Kim Record is in her fifth year as the Director of Athletics at UNCG. Record was named to the post Sept. 27, 2009 and leads a program that fields men’s and women’s teams in 17 sports, over 250 student-athletes and 70 employees.

Since arriving, Record has reshaped and revamped the athletic department across the board. UNCG has seen improvements on the field and has stimulated interest within the campus and Greensboro communities.

During her first three years at UNCG, Record has implemented ‘The Spartan Way’ strategic plan in an effort to ensure the continued success and future improvement of Spartan Athletics. The plan includes five core values and six goals for the department summarized with the motto – ‘We discover and develop champions in life.’

Record has guided UNCG to success on and off the court during her time in Greensboro. In 2011-12 alone, the Spartans posted five regular season titles under her watch, including championship banners in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and a divisional title in men’s basketball. UNCG also had five Southern Conference Player of the Year award winners and five conference Coach of the Year honorees last season.

The Spartans have excelled in the classroom, having 92 student-athletes named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12. Additionally, UNCG senior cross country student-athlete Ashley Schnell earned an NCAA winter sport postgraduate scholarship. Schnell and men’s soccer student-athlete Peyton Ford picked up SoCon postgraduate scholarship honors. Women’s basketball student-athlete Amy Clapper also earned the NCAA Women’s Enhancement post-graduate scholarship.

Record guided UNCG through the NCAA Division I Certification process in 2011-12, which must be completed at least once every 10 years. The certified designated denotes that an institution operates its athletics program in compliance with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.

Record, who will serve on the NCAA Championships cabinet in 2012-13, is also the vice-chair of the Greensboro Sports Commission, an active member with the Greensboro Rotary and a member of the Greensboro Sports Council.

Record, in conjunction with Chancellor Dr. Linda P. Brady, helped develop school spirit-building campaigns such as Move In, Sunday Funday, Go Blue Preview and Blue & Gold Fridays.

Record is responsible for the leadership, administration, organization and finances of UNCG’s athletics program, which underwent a major shift in men’s basketball. The Spartan men’s basketball team began playing its games in the Greensboro Coliseum in 2009-10 and enjoyed success last season under SoCon Coach of the Year Wes Miller winning the North Division title. The Spartans will play in the Greensboro Coliseum for the fourth year in 2012-13, hosting 15 games in one of the premier facilities in the region.

Record coordinates fundraising and operation of the Spartan Club with the vice chancellor for university advancement. She oversees efforts to engage alumni, fans and the community with UNCG athletics. The Spartan Club surpassed its annual scholarship fund goal of $300,000 for the 2012 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the scholarship fund. The Spartan Club posted an annual scholarship fund total of $307,479, a 20.7% increase over last year’s mark, increasing their efforts by over $50,000 and surpassing the previous high that was set in 1987.

Record also has a lead role in strategic planning and in athletics facilities development. She helped complete the facility upgrades at the UNCG Baseball Stadium and the renovations of the HHP locker room facilities. The 12,000 square foot HHP facility hosts team lounges, shower facilities and general locker room areas for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country and track, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and softball.

Record, who served as a consultant with ISP Sports before taking her current position, was the senior associate director of athletics at Florida State University from 1995 to 2008, and held a succession of positions at the University of Virginia from 1984-1995, culminating with an appointment as associate director of athletics for administration.

Record emerged from a national search that drew 125 candidates, and is UNCG’s first female athletic director. She is only the second woman to hold an athletic director’s position in the 89-year history of the Southern Conference.

In her 13 years at Florida State, she had a broad range of administrative duties, including serving as a member of the Executive Management Team, which determined and implemented policy decisions for a 19-sport, $50 million intercollegiate program. She directly supervised three sports programs – men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer – and monitored Title IX compliance. Other areas included executive-level staffing; day-to-day departmental operations; serving as liaison with the trademark licensing program; and oversight for marketing, media and public relations, and radio and television contracts.

In construction, she facilitated FSU’s $6 million state-of-the-art soccer and softball stadium and its $10 million men’s and women’s basketball training center. She oversaw a project that showcased the history of athletics at FSU as part of a $100 million facilities improvement plan. Her initial responsibilities as associate director of athletics at FSU included oversight of men’s and women’s tennis, swimming & diving and softball. Record also held the designation of senior woman administrator.

At Virginia, she supervised all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department and specialized in external operations. She implemented marketing and promotional strategies for all 26 sports programs as associate director of athletics for external operations.

She was the executive staff member of a capital campaign team created to raise $50 million. She rose through the ranks at Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, starting out as a sports information intern who was progressively promoted in the department to associate director of athletics for administration.

As a consultant with ISP, Record provided marketing expertise in the area of athletics sports signage, including video boards, scorer’s tables and other digital signage. She has also coordinated purchase and installation between vendor, institution and ISP. Within the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Record has served on both the executive committee and the Director’s Cup Committee. Within the NCAA, she served on the Women’s Soccer Committee and the Regional Soccer Committee.

A native of Charlottesville, she graduated from Virginia and earned an M.S. degree in sports management from Florida State.

She has two sons – Kyle, 24 a graduate student at the University of Virginia, and Josh, 19, a freshman at the College of Charleston.

Team Inductions 1973 Women’s Golf Team (Inducted 2004) Won the first national championship of any kind for UNCG, competing in the AIAW National Tournament in Massachusetts … defeated Rollins College on the final hole for the championship.

David Whiteside Men’s Basketball 1982 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2004) Won the NCAA Division III National Championship without a home field … facilities at UNCG were under renovation at the time, forcing the team to play its games at near-by Grimsley High School … the team finished 19-3-0, including a 3-0 win over Wake Forest during the regular season and a 2-1 win over Plymouth State in double overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals.

1981-82 Women’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2007) National runnersup in the first-ever NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament … amassed a record of 25-3, losing in overtime at Elizabethtown College (Pa.) … began a run of seven consecutive 20-win seasons for the women’s basketball program.

1983 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2009) Brought home the school’s second consecutive national title with a dominant season. Went 23-1-1 on the year, including outscoring its seven conference foes by a combined 44-1.

Twelve of its first 13 matches were won by shutout. Won a then-NCAA record 23 matches, including rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the national title match to defeat Claremont.

1983 Women’s Tennis Team (Inducted 2008) With four freshmen and two sophomores, team compiled a 20-4 record, including 14-2 in the spring, and finished the NCAA Division III national runners-up … Amy Brown and Lisa Zimmerman earned All-American honors that season.

1994 Baseball Team (Inducted 2010) The 1994 Spartan baseball squad became the first team in school history to record a victory in an NCAA tournament at the Division I level … In just its fourth year of existence, UNCG went 39-18 on the way to a Big South Conference title and 2-2 at the NCAA South Regional, defeating Southeast Louisiana and Tulane while falling twice to national power Southern California.

Alex Lehnhoff - Men’s Tennis (Inducted 2010) The 1999 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year … as a junior, he won the Southern Conference’s No. 1 flight singles title … won a school-record 27 matches in 1996-97, a mark that stood for 13 years … went 94-37 in singles play during his career and also won more than 60 doubles matches.

Melinda Goodson - Women’s Basketball (Inducted 2011) One of just two women’s basketball players to have her number retired, Goodson (1997-2000) finished her career as the school’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,464 points – tops in UNCG’s Division I era ... Doug Hamilton - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2011) Four-year letter winner (1981-83, 1985) at UNCG and was a key member of three NCAA Division III national championship squads (1982-83, 1985) ...

A co-captain in 1985, Hamilton was a firstteam all-South Region and all-Dixie Conference selection in 1985. UNCG was 78-11-2 (.868) during his four seasons.

Raila Maisonlahti - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2010) During her four seasons (1994-97), the Spartans compiled a 59-234 mark, including a perfect 22-0-0 record in Big South and Southern Conference play … the 1997 squad set school marks for wins (19), shutouts (13), overall points, goals and assists.

Tere Dail - Volleyball Coach (Inducted 2011) Served as UNCG’s women’s volleyball head coach from 1979-1999, amassing a career record of 490-259 (.654), leading the Spartans to four NCAA Tournaments and 14 seasons of 20 or more victories ...Dail’s victory total represents a UNCG record, 384 more than second place. Her 1984 & 1989 teams set the school record for wins in a season with 34.

The Spartan Club The Spartan Club is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to secure scholarship support for nearly 250 student-athletes who compete in 17 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletic programs at UNCG. UNCG proudly proclaims that 100 percent of Spartan Club contributions go directly to athletic scholarships for deserving student-athletes.
