UNFPA - United Nations Population Fund - is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. To this end, UNFPA supports access to contraception, including condoms to protect against sexually transmitted infections notably HIV/AIDS; access to health care during pregnancy and childbirth; and comprehensive sexuality education. UNFPA promotes gender equality and supports abandonment of harmful practices. UNFPA helps to build countries’ capacities for population data collection and analysis to guide national policymaking. UNFPA has it’s Nordic Office and Procurement Services Branch in UN City.
UNICEF - United Nations Children’s Fund - promotes the rights and well-being of every child in everything they do. Together with partners, UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into concrete outcomes and impact in children’s health, nutrition, access to water and sanitation, education and protection. UNICEF focuses special efforts on reaching the most vulnerable and exclued children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere. UNICEF’s global supply and logistics operations is headquartered in UN City Campus II. UNOPS - United Nations Office for Project Services is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting over 1,000 peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world. UNOPS provides project management, infrastructure and procurement services, often in the most challenging environments. The organization works with a wide range of partners, including other UN organizations, governments and donors. With over 7,000 personnel spread across more than 80 countries, UNOPS helps partners deliver a lasting difference to the lives of people in need. UNOPS global headquarters are located in UN City.
UN Women, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, was created in 2010. UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting women’s needs worldwide. Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the UN Charter, UN Women, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women as well as the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women is represented by its Nordic Office in UN City. UNHCR - Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees - is the leading frontline global organization saving lives, protecting the rights and finding solutions for millions of refugees, displaced and stateless people around the world. Initially established in 1951 after WWII, to resolve the post-war refugee situation in Europe, the agency has grown exponentially since, to match the growth in refugees globally - now at the highest level in a decade. UN City is hosting UNHCR’s Global Private Sector Fundraising Service and other External Relations programmes.
WFP - United Nations World Food Programme - is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger. In emergencies WFP gets food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After the cause of an emergency has passed, food is used to help rebuild communities. WFP assists more than 80 million people in more than 75 countries every year. WFP’s Nordic Office is placed in UN City. WHO - World Health Organisation - is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shape the health research agenda, set norms and standards, formulate evidence-based policy options, provide technical support to countries, improve access to medicine and monitor and assess health trends. The WHO Regional Office for Europe is located in UN City.
UNEP - United Nations Environment Programme - is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in 1972, UNEP is represented in the UN City by the UNEP-DTU Partnership and the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). The mandate of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition. UNIDO’s vision is a world where economic development is inclusive and sustainable and economic progress is equitable, and the organization focuses on poverty reduction through productive activities, trade capacity-building and energy and environment.
UNDP – United Nations Development Programme - is the largest UN development organization with a broad mandate to promote sustainable human development. UNDP also serves as coordinator of the UN development system. The organization is operational in more than 170 countries focusing its work on poverty reduction and the Millennium Development Goals, democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery, the environment and climate change. Human rights, gender equality and national capacity building are central cross cutting themes. UNDP has several headquarter functions located in UN City including human resources, procurement, IT connectivity and the Nordic Representation Office.
