A letter from UNC President Kay Norton: UNC graduates make a difference Dear UNC Graduates, Commencement marks a milestone in both your journey of lifelong learning complishments and look forward to new opportunities, know that you are part of more than a century’s tradition on our campus. In 1890, when civic leaders, educators and citizens from Greeley and across building, they spoke of universal education as the foundation for our future. Governor Job A. Cooper told the crowd, “It is the enlightened conscience and educated intelligence of the many that will ultimately crowd back all corruption and anarchy and harmonize contending factions and dissipate the dangers that threaten our country. Upon this foundation stone laid today will rise an institution to prepare leaders in this great work.” As graduates, you will leave here today to become the leaders envisioned by our founders. Earning a UNC degree is about more than books and knowledge. It is about nurturing the mind and the heart, seeing potential in the unknown, and preparing to give back to society. If you look at the array of professions — the lives — we prepare students for, many are public service oriented. UNC graduates don’t just make money; they make a difference. As you continue your journey of lifelong learning, you can be proud to be part of a distinguished group of UNC alumni who are making a difference across the country and around the world. Best Regards, Kay Norton

THE MIRROR editor@uncmirror.com So personally, this has been the year of my sophomore slumps. And yes, I may or may not be going through a bad break-up right now, so of course all I can see is the apparent negativity in my life. Recently, thoughts like “I’m going to be alone forever, what is wrong with me?” or “Are you kidding me, I have to create an advertising campaign and take this crap?” are questions that often cross my mind. And I know there are students out there struggling with personal problems way larger than my own. But—for those who know me at all—optimism might as well be my middle name, and summer is my silver lining. I actually had a wonderful year at UNC, when I look past all the bad. I’ve accomplished so much

Thoughts from the editorial staff of The Mirror
Take advantage of summer while you still can, undergraduates more than I would have thought. I’ve taken classes that interest me and have excelled at a majority of them. I joined a bunch of new oncampus clubs. I was accepted into the journalism and mass communications program, and I became the news editor here at The Mirror. I’ve taken chances, put my trust into people and made new friends. I’ve learned how to shoot a gun, make myself a decent dinner, swing dance and all about the “country life” (I’m from Las Vegas). I’m sure a good majority of the student population has made some unforgettable memories this year, as well. We are young. our lives, we are independent and we have the ability to take our lives any direction we choose.
Though I’ve recently had to to where I plan on taking my life, I know this summer will only bring more options. And for those of you who have no idea what the hell you’re doing with your life, and where you want to go or what you want to do, we’re all riding in this same indecisive boat. But I can promise you we’re not sinking. I am going to take this summer and use it to do an odd combination of relaxing and working hard to make money. And I know I’m not the only one doing that, because what else do college students do with their summers? But my advice to all students at UNC is to try something ridiculously new this summer. Do something that is totally out of
your routine. Date someone who normally isn’t your type. Apply for that job you don’t think you can get. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable in your own skin and disregard what anyone else says about them. Try food from a different culture. Go to a concert for a band you’ve never heard of. Do things you normally wouldn’t even think of doing. Because who knows? You might like it. —Katarina Velazquez

Like Towels By Michael Nowels
For years, many of us have been told what a big deal today is. We’ve been told that when we move our tassels from one side of our goofy hats to the other, capital-A Adults. Like we’ll start paying bills on time and remembering important meetings and going to bed before midnight? Yeah, right. It’s not that simple, and even if it was, that’d be disappointing. Grown-ups are boring. Their version of exciteand caper salad recipe,
out, but I know it’s nothing like managing a 401k (not that I know what that’s like either). If you talk with successful, happy adults, they’ll likely say stability is part of the equation. But they’re also likely to tell you how important it is things that excite you. If you’re leaving the university setting for good, don’t become old overnight. This isn’t the 1950s. A college degree no longer guarantees a stable job, as it largely did when our parents were entering the workforce. It’s pretty scary to walk into the job market with a paper that no longer distinguishes
you. But as job requirements have changed over the decades, so have the jobs themselves. There’s now more opportunity to ease into a position than a half-century ago, even if that requires taking an internship. Work situations are are social situations. It’s OK to move home with your parents and work a couple jobs while want to do. It’s OK to switch careers in a few years and start anew. Because the value of a college degree has diminished, employers are looking for prospective hires to prove themselves in other ways, and that’s where remaining youthful can come in handy. Companies want em-
ployees who think differently and can communicate those ideas effectively. They want employees who are curious about the job they’ll be doing and how they can do it better. Of course training to do the job effectively is important, but your superiors will remember the time you taught them how to post a picture to the company’s website over the time you correctly ing, anyway? We’ve gotten to graduation day by jumping through the hoops correctly. Now we have another opportunity to pick our own hoops. Time spent at UNC wasn’t a total waste, makes college life great is that there’s always
something new to learn or experience because, for the most part, people are on their own for the out who they are and who they want to be. Don’t let that spirit of discovery leave you as you leave here. This won’t be the last time you change, and it won’t be the last time you need to learn something. Your degree may be commonplace now, but don’t let it become meaningless. Keep learning. When we stop asking questions and start getting complacent, we end up watering the sidewalks. — Michael Nowels is a senior elementary education major and former Sports Editor for The Mirror. Hazel E. Johnson award winner aspires to be Northern Colorado educator Monique Becker

The Hazel E. Johnson award is presented annually to both an undergraduate and graduate student for outstandsubmitted, the history department faculty personally requests for them to do so. Ben McClure, a secondary education history major, is the undergraduate student who won the Hazel E. Johnson award this year for his paper about the Grand Junction Indian School. “The class that I participated in was the history of American education,” McClure said. “I was kind of interested in the Native American aspect of it. So I decided to do my paper on Native American boarding schools; I also wanted to do something with Colorado History and through researching, I learned about the Grand Junction Indian School.” To write his paper, McClure utilized one of the best sources he said that the UNC campus had to offer its students: the Michener Library archives. With the help of several Michener employees and hours ed, McClure began working on his paper.

Benjamin McClure won the Hazel E. Johnson award for outstanding research on Colorado history.
The Grand Junction Indian School was founded by the government in 1886. The idea was to make the Indian
population become more American through learning the English language, in a setting that was not in any way similar to the Native American tribe’s settlement. It was later renamed as the Teller Institute in 1891. McClure said his academics were an important part of his time at UNC. “While clubs and friends are good to have, it’s important to make sure you have time to study,” McClure said. “As it is important to use all the resources you have available.” McClure worked in the dining hall for three years, and he said he made several good friends from the experience. He said he knows the importance of time management and knows how to balance his time between work, studying and spending time with friends. After graduating, McClure said he plans to teach in Northern Colorado, hopefully in the Greeley area. He said he made his decision to stay in the Greeley area after completing his practicum at Greeley West High School. He said he was inspired by the many cultural differences at the high school. “I want to be able to show Somalians that they can go to college just as much as anyone else,” McClure said. “I learned a lot from them during my practicum and I admire them.”
UNC swimmer balances nursing program and athletics successfully Katarina Velazquez
news@uncmirror.com
With weekdays starting at 5 a.m. that usually consisted of two athletic practices, a full-time student course load and nursing clinical practices, Renee Stephens had what some might call a “full plate” throughout her four years here. “There were times when I didn’t know if was going to make it through the week,” she said, with a chuckle. “But I learned I was way better at time management than I thought.” The 22-year-old Loveland native is a graduating nursing major who also spent her time at UNC as a student-athlete for the swimming and diving team. She said that swimming normally took about 20 hours out of her week, while classes took about nine hours, and that is not including the hours she spent on homework and studying. She also said that her clinical days for the nursing program would sometimes be up to 12 hours, and they would take approximately 12-24 hours out of her week. But Stephens said that she doesn’t a regret a single thing and wouldn’t change anything in her time at UNC. Although Stephens said her swimming career might not have been top-notch when she started her freshman year, she grew as an athlete over her four years at UNC to eventually place top 8 in her respective events in the Western Athletic Conference
meet. She was also one of the team’s captains her senior year, was voted “Most Inspirational” by her team in 2013, and was awarded “Most Improved Athlete” by her team in 2011. Stephens was also named to the Mounic Conference Team” her freshman and sophomore year, then kept the streak going when the team moved to the WAC conference her junior and senior year. To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic year, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least half of the team’s meets. As for her academic career, Stephens was accepted into UNC’s competitive She even received a scholar honor award in 2014, and she said only four nursing students from the College of Natural and Health Sciences receive this award. Stephens said her most rewarding achievement in the nursing program was when she was accepted into a Summer ter of the Rockies the summer after her junior year. She worked in the surgical posttrauma branch of the medical center, and said it was one of her greatest and proudest memories. Stephens also was an active member of
said she played intramural volleyball her freshman year. Stephens said she has aspirations to work at a hospital in Colorado after she graduates from UNC. She still has some summer classes to take, as well as a senior high hopes of working as an acute surgical care nurse or as a critical care nurse in the future. Stephens said her favorite memory at nior year at the WAC conference meet. “I remember an old teammate saying that ‘You’re going to be so nervous but make sure to look over at the crowd.’ So I looked up at my mom and saw her going crazy and waving her arms, then I looked at my teammates,” she said. “It was just the accumulation of four years of hard work Stephens, who has the word “blessed” tattooed on her left wrist, said the word has been an inspiration to the way she lives her life. “I feel beyond blessed to do everything I did and to be able to excel at it too,” she said. Stephens said her family and teammates played an important role of a support system throughout her years at UNC. She also said her time in college was a fun and amazing experience, and that it gave her more opportunities than she could have asked for.

Steven: The man, the legend and the unforgettable bow tie Biz Gilmore

A college career isn’t always packed up into a neat, four-year package. Steven Josephson zig-zagged cross country traveling wide to change schools, take time off for a religious commitment, changed schools again and ultimately end up right where he’d had liked to place: the University of Northern Colorado. The printmaking student who has held the highest position in UNC student media for the past year graduates on Saturday. To keep in line with his ever-shifting college life, his next step is only quasi-related to the previous. Josephson has accepted a position with the Teach for America program. He’s moving to Detroit with his wife, Corey, for two years. Josephson gradu-
ated high school in Berthoud. Initially he’d wanted to go to UNC for teaching, but his guidance counselor informed him he was short a math class. So he set off on the road to Rhode Island, attending Johnson and Wales in Providence. He picked up a movie review for the school paper; some member except that Tom Hanks narrated it. After a year at Johnson and Wales, he ended up at a community college in Wyoming, Northwest College. Still a graphic design major, he took his newfound interest in print media with him. After a two-year break to go on a religious mission in and around the Midwest, Josephson returned to Northwest College and their paper as the graphics chief and eventually worked up to managing editor. He graduated with an associate’s in graphic

design, and headed to Greeley in the fall of 2012. And of course, he didn’t give up his love affair with journalism. “I transferred to UNC kind of last minute, but I knew I was going to be involved in journalism. Newsprint had gotten in my
veins,” Josephson said. Josephson came on staff swinging, a result of being accustomed to very direct journalistic leadership. Admittedly, Josephson didn’t make the some of The Mirror staff. Josephson even-
tually focused his efforts on The Mirror’s online and print redesign. As he changed the paper, he—and particularly his wife Corey—changed the building through remodeling. “In the six years I served as the general manager of The Mirror, I did not meet another student with a higher newspaper or communication IQ than Steven,” said Kurt Hinkle, former general manager, in an email with The Mirror. “Steven bleeds newspaper ink and was the guiding force behind the paper’s recent redesign, the remodeling of the building and the overall culture change.” Josephson changed his major from graphic design to printmaking at UNC, which is a change he said he never expected. year here, I always saw myself as someone who was masquerading as an artist. I was hoping that
people didn’t notice that I didn’t have mad skills,” Josephson said. It would seem that he is past his imposter phase, as Josephson recently won best in printmaking at a student show, and Provost Robbyn Wacker attended his senior portfolio presentation. His favorite combination of words is “ironic juxtaposition,” which could be used to classify his multifaceted involvement. “I do art and journalism now, and I’m becoming an elementary school teacher in three months. I like a lot of different things. It just kind into a lot of different areas and spread myself out as well. I had the hardest time picking out what I wanted to be when I grew up,” Josephson said. So the art major, the newspaper editor, the teacher gets to be everything when he grows up.
The student who proves, “Not all who wander are lost” Antonio Hill arts@uncmirror.com
For every student who walks through the gates at Cranford Park during orientation, a journey begins. No one can say what will happen in the next four years or even if it will be four years before the journey at UNC is over, but one thing is certain: each Bear’s journey will come to an end. In the case of graduating senior sociology major Amber “Billy” Chadderdon, her journey began in 2008. Even minute of her time at UNC and touched more lives than possibly any student. involved with UNC’s International Film Series,” Chadderdon said. “I worked at Subway and the computer lab, so I pretty much knew everyone. I worked at Subway since it opened, and I met some amazing people that I hope to stay connected with.” Chadderdon says she tried to take everything in while attending UNC. She made sure to make people smile if they were having a bad day, and she said she tried her best to get to know as many people possible out of pure curiosity. She says she even made an effort to have an impact on her professors. “If I could give incoming freshman any advice, I would say always introduce yourself to your professors,” Chad-
derdon said. “Also, never be afraid to ask questions. It will save your life.” Chadderdon also said that following her own advice has “I have a few professors that feel like family, and they will be there to support me in my future,”Chadderdon said. lessons that students learn while at UNC are unique. As dent when she spoke about her personal growth. “Regardless of what people think, everything will turn out OK one way or another. It may not be perfect for you or anyone else, but everything will be OK,” Chadderdon said. “You will move on, and you will learn to deal with it because you are a human being and that’s what we do. We deal with our crap.” Chadderdon was able to balance the ups and downs of her life outside school and work as well. Overcoming the loss of her father was no simple task but getting married to her high school sweetheart brought cherished moments. All are perfect examples of why she is more than just another college kid. College is the time in most student’s lives in which they hope to learn who they are and what they want to be. Memories are made along the way too, but amid all the little things.
Michaela Cross | The Mirror
Billy Chadderdon is not afraid to embrace her nerdy side either. She considers herself a huge movie buff and Lord of the Rings fan.
“My favorite memory at UNC… Hmm. I’d have per, still hyped up on energy drinks,” Chadderdon said. “Good times.”

In next change-up, pitcher aims to save lives lege environment, and it was good to see her really shine like I knew she could. She’s going to do great things,” Erin said. Wilkinson is one step closer to her dream of being a doctor as she graduates with honors with a degree in biology with an emphasis in pre-health. She will continue at Northern Colorado’s oneyear masters program before attending a six-year doctorate program. “I think the profession has always interested me,” Wilkinson said. “I’ve played sports my whole life, and you see people get injured. I want to be the person that can help athRylie Cook | the Mirror
Senior softball pitcher Megan Wilkinson stands near her mound on Butler-Hancock field for one of the last times. She is graduating with honors and hopes to become a doctor.

Softball captain Megan Wilkinson stayed close to home and close to her sister when she decided to play softball at UNC. She got to play two years of collegelevel softball with older sister Erin, and said her best softball memory is the last
conference game she and her sister played together before Erin graduated in 2012. “Probably my favorite memory overall is, I think it was the last conference series we were playing my sister’s senior complete game of my college career to her last con-
ference game of her senior year and we swept the series, so I thought that was really cool.” Erin Wilkinson, who is currently working on her doctorate in physical therapy at CU Denver, also remembers the game and said it was pretty “special.” “It was nice to see her come into her own in a col-
of play.” Wilkinson is sporting her own “gnarly” dark purple bruises on the inside of her upper right arm, where she got hit twice while at bat in this weekend’s series. Despite the physical demands of softball, she’s loved the sport for years. When she was recruited as a high school senior captain on her softball team at Windsor High School, she already had personal ties
to UNC. “The coach that recruited me, I have known since I was probably about 12, and the assistant coach was the one that started me with pitching lessons,” Wilkinson said. However, the two coaches resigned before Wilkinson got the chance to play for them. Wilkinson’s other tie to UNC was her sister Erin, who was the catcher on the team at the time. Wilkinson said she was happy to have the opportunity to play with her sister at the college level. Wilkinson said rather than inhibit her studies, softball has helped her time-management, and also has helped her build relationships with her professors because of her odd schedule and frequent oneon-one meetings to go over missed material. Wilkinson also had her advisor, Patrick Burns, and her softball coach, Shana Easley, to thank for her successes. She said the two are very supportive and constantly push her to be her best. Wilkinson said she’s ac-
complished quite a bit so far, and can’t decide what she’s most proud of. “I think the three years that I’ve been here so far, I’ve been selected as an academic All-American for softball, so I think that that’s a really big accomplishment. And last year, our team GPA was the second-highest in the NCAA for all Division I schools.” Erin Wilkinson had only praise for her motivated sister and her work so far. “I cannot say enough for her work ethic and her passion, in softball and in her academics,” Erin said. “She’s earned it all, and I’m so glad she gets to go on and achieve those goals.” As Wilkinson says goodbye to being an undergrad, she said she looks back on with satisfaction. “This is a great school,” Wilkinson said. “I’m really happy I decided to come here, and the family that I’m leaving with. I’ve made some of the best friends that I’ll probably ever have, and I have some of the best relationships with teachers that I’ll probably ever have. It’s just a great school.”

Graduating senior Joseph Carroll stands on his home turf at Nottingham Field for one of the last times before he graduates and moves on into the “real world.” Carroll is a triple major in history, anthropology and geology. He also played on the Northern Colorado student football team in 2011. He’s dedicated just as much time and commitment, if not more, to his academics as he has to his athletics. Read more of Carroll’s impressive story in the Mirror online at uncmirror.com.
