The right stuff for the job The Mirror asks the current administration what they want to see in Kay Norton’s successor
What type of person do you want to have to lead a large group of people? What type of leader is best to be appointed as president for a college campus? Maybe you want who goes out of their way to make everyone happy. These are the types of questions besearch continues. President Kay Norton announced that she will be retiring at the end of June in 2018. Norton made this announcement at her annual State of the University Address in Sepyears. The Board of Trustees and Student Senate are a few of the groups that are continuing to plan the presidential search. Both the Board
and Senate have started to create lists of the leadership characteristics they hope to see in the new president. According to Student Trustee Michael hosted several listening sessions and interacwhich resulted in a dialogue that included eral characteristics that they felt were not adequately covered and should be considered further. “Students have repeatedly stressed the importance of visibility in our next President. Many students expressed disappointment in a lack of opportunities for collaboration and engagement with Kay. Students believe a characteristic that more explicitly addresses commitment of the next President to be more physically present on campus and in student’s lives should be included. Opinion: On the search for UNC’s next president, we need to hear all voices.
Norton announced her retirement during her State of the University address. This anfrom students around campus demanding the Board of Trustees replace President Norand hiring processes on campus . It’s unknown whether Norton’s retirement was the that many students feel as though their voices are unheard and that the UNC search for a new president will resemble previous ones think the process needs to be more transparent and allow for more student input. outreach have been provided to allow for concerns to be heard and for these to be presented to the UNC Presidential Search Committee. Student Senate hosted a roundtable the current presidential search. We heard various responses and compiled a list we presented to the Presidential Search Committee on Oct. 18. This request included our desire for a diversity statement to be included in all leadership characteristics which will be presvisibility in our future president. Leadership Characteristics list was introexpanded descriptions of characteristics that the search committee desires the applicants bear in mind. And while this new list vaguely addresses the concerns and
suggestions of the students that we spoke placate us into thinking that they are really concerned with our request for a University President when they will continue with an already designed plan for hiring. One of the main concerns I have seen on this list is “Promote a positive campus climate and culinclusion in this statement but If you read (http://www.unco.edu/president/universityacknowledges that this is a goal for UNC. Maybe these need to be revised also to better ues statements should be? Another item on and embracing diversity while ensuring all ties they hold. This should also continue to the classrooms and I believe all faculty be required to attend trainings that will show them how to adjust their teaching styles to include all students and their various backgrounds. Somewhere on this list also needs to include the need for candidates to speprior to their hiring. This leads into my next point of concern. a discussion was had that involved an “open informed of “open or closed interview opWe were then provided with information
eral Counsel. Satriana mainly referred to the cause “You want to get as many good qualiStudent Senate that if you have open interinstitutions or positions they currently hold employment. I don’t believe we should be putting the comfort of a potential candidate before the needs of the UNC population. I believe with everything the campus has been experiencing recently concerning transparthe campus that their concerns are really being heard and received. The Presidential Search committee was also deciding if they would allow for more than one applicant to tour the campus prior lowed to meet two or more persons before decisions were made. Many students wanted to meet more than one applicant to allow for more choice and voiced concern if only one person was picked and the long process that would follow if this person wasn’t an appropriate choice for UNC. I would much rather meet more than one applicant than just the wide survey and received various responses. Around 1300 persons responded with the top results wanting a new president to be knowledgeable about the higher education eagerly engage students. Undergraduate reports showed that we want a person who personally advocates for all students while actively supporting those populations that are underrepresented. How can we know how this person will respond to our campus unless we can interact with them before they
are hired? Another area of concern surrounding the presidential search was allowing student voice on the committee to become an actual vote on deciding an eligible candidate to be hired. There are currently three very qualithe search committee and while these students are allowed input on various steps in candidate. I feel this doesn’t really show that the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Committee is really interested in having student opinion in the new president. One last concern I will address is the recent letter written by former UNC Provost that the president has the authority to remake up a story? At a recent student senate the process of replacing our Provost was beis not. This shows the lack of transparency students are so desperately requesting from our administration. edge that I don’t speak for the entire Student serve and voice what I have heard from various persons on campus. I know that while that most will agree that student voice needs to be heard and transparency in this process is a requirement and only the beginning if we are to continue moving forward at UNC. 6/$ XPNFO T CBTLFUCBMM MPPLT UP CBDL VQ QSFTFBTPO QSBJTF They say everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, that reason is hard to find. Other times, it’s obvious. The University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball team was picked to finish atop the Big Sky in both the media and coaches polls after finishing 14-4 in conference play, 22-8 overall last season. The reason? It’s not so hard to find. “It puts a tremendous amount of pressure on our plate,â€? coach Kamie Ethridge said. “But we have been putting in countless hours of hard work to back it up.â€? On the surface, the Bears are ranked where they are because they are really good — returning their top three scorers and bringing back 84.2 percent of their playing time from last season’s team. That was a team that won 11-straight games last year and was on the verge of cracking the NCAA top-25 rankings. And though they stumbled down the stretch, it was the most successful season the Northern Colorado women have had in recent history. Digging a little deeper, Ethridge has put together a well-oiled machine that looked unselfish to a flaw at points last season. And it all starts with the guard duo of junior Savannah Smith and senior Savannah Scott. Smith averaged 15.9 points on 34.3 percent from beyond the arc and added 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season to warrant First Team All-Big Sky honors. Her 80 three-pointers made also set a UNC single-season record. Scott tallied 14 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 45 percent from downtown to find a spot on the All-Big
Senior goalkeeper Madeline Burdick has had a great season in goal for the Bears, averaging under 0.75 goals allowed per game and recording 10 shutouts in just 21 games. In those 21 games, she has 112 saves, has saved 87.5 percent of the shots that have come her way and has only allowed 16 goals year, she has a 13-5-2 record so far this season. 5IF #FBST XPNFO T CBTLFUCBMM UFBN DFMFCSBUFT BU #BOL PG $PMPSBEP BSFOB MBTU TFBTPO 5IF #FBST SFUVSO QFSDFOU PG QMBZJOH UJNF GSPN MBTU ZFBS T UFBN UIBU ĂśOJTIFE VODCFBST DPN
Sky second team. Ethridge praised what both of them are able to do on the court, and added that Scott shows the most hustle of any player she’s ever coached. And in a coaching career that spans 30 years and includes stops at the University of Texas, Vanderbilt and Kansas State, that’s saying something. To anchor the paint, the Bears have last year’s leading rebounder, junior center Courtney Smith. She averaged 14 points on 60.1 percent from the field, while pulling down 5.9 boards per game. On the other end of the floor, UNC also returns its best defender, senior Kianna Williams. Williams averaged just under
six points, while pulling down 4.7 rebounds and nabbing 2.1 steals last season. The last returning starter for the Bears is sophomore Krystal Leger-Walker. She started all 30 games her true freshman season and led the team in assists, dishing out just under four per game. Off the bench, the Bears return sophomore Abby Kain, junior Kirsten Kramer and sophomore Bridget Hintz who all averaged over six minutes per game last season. And at the helm is Etheridge, who has a 57-37 record in her three years in Greeley after inheriting a team that finished 14-15 the year before her arrival. The deeper someone looks into
this UNC team, the more reasons they’ll find to like it. They’ll also find that the team is more than up to the challenge of playing with a bullseye on its back. “It’s a long way to go until March to back up the expectations put on us, but we are excited to face the challenge, Ethridge said. The Bears used a strong second half to pull away from CSU-Pueblo in their 68-51 exhibition win. Scott led that charge with 23 points and five rebounds. Savannah Smith added 11 points and five assists. Northern Colorado opens its regular season on Nov. 10 when they head to Chicago to take on DePaul.
UNC football has struggled this year, but it is in no way because of Alex Wesley. Wesley has 849 yards — more than twice the next leading reciever — and four touchdowns. Wesley has been a conno matter who’s throwing him the ball.

#FBST GPPUCBMM TFBTPO NBSSFE CZ JOKVSZ The University of Northern Colorado football team had high hopes at the beginning of the season. With returning juniors Jacob Knipp at quarterback and Trae riek at running back, murmurs of competing for a Big Sky Championship were hear around campus. And things got off to a good start with an easy 41-14 win over College of Idaho in the season-opener at Nottingham. riek rushed for 71 yards and three touchdowns and Knipp added 238 yards through the air, and the offense was off and running. After a week-two matchup against the University of Florida in Gainesville was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma, the Bears carried the momentum from week one into a game at Folsom Field against the University of Colorado.
UNC dropped that game 41-21, but showed glimpses of being really good, especially on the offensive end. It was Knipp’s turn to find the end zone, connecting with Alex Wesley five times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and adding another to tight end Michael McCauley. Coach Earnest Collins Jr. said his team did a lot of growing up, scoring 21 points on a CU team that had allowed only a field goal through its first two games. The Bears kept rolling into Big Sky play, winning a thriller 43-42 over Idaho State on a last-second field goal. The offense kept rolling, with Knipp throwing for 413 yards and four touchdowns and riek added 142 yards on the ground.

Knipp went down midway through UNC’s next game at North Dakota, and the offense hasn’t been the same since. Knipp reinjured his non-throwing shoulder that knocked him out in the second game last season and allowed now-Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter to step in. Backup quarterback Conor regan has stepped up nicely, but there is a reason Knipp has been the starter since his freshman year and twice beat out Sloter for the starting job. The Bears have had to rely more on the run game, and it has revealed how young their offensive line is. Three freshman are starting up front, and they’re just not getting the push they need. Collins noted how

The defensive struggles have only added to the teams struggles as a whole. Since the opener, the defensive unit has given up over 40 points per game, and it has made the offense try to dig out of a number of holes early on. Sitting at 2-6 and 1-5 in Big Sky Play with only two games left, this season may be a disappointment, but it is not lost. The Bears gained a lot of experience, especially players who would not have normally found the field. That, teamed with Knipp returning from injury and riek returning for his senior year, all eyes are set on 2018.
