‘Cece’ Wire named best of visual/performing arts STAFF REPORT news@uncmirror.com
Christine “Cece” Wire, a professor of the art and design of jewelry, represents the best of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UNC. While attending Kuttown University of Pennsylvania, she received a bachelor’s degree in craft and design. She later attained a master’s degree in metalsmithing at Colorado State University. Wire is one a select few who is qualified at UNC to teach qualification classes within her field. She has broadened her horizons by teaching workshops throughout the United States and Europe. She is also a former director of the Precious Metal Clay Guild, an organization founded in 1997. This
organization introduced a new material for jewelers to use that would eventually become a new favorite of jewelers worldwide. Wire can be considered a pioneer in her field, as she is one of the first people in the United States to create jewelry using precious metal clay. She expanded her borders and began displaying her art nationally in 1993. Wire is also the author of “Creative Metal Clay Jewelry: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration,” a book dedicated to sparking creativity from readers interested in craftmaking. While UNC has many courses with exceptional instructors to help mold the minds of students, with her extensive background and definite expertise in her field, Wire undoubtedly represents the best that UNC has to offer.
The students at UNC have chosen professor Ron Reed to represent the prestigious Monfort College of Business for Best Professor. Reed has worked at the University of Northern Colorado since 1988 as a professor of accounting. Preceding his work here, Reed studied at University of Illinois-ChampaignUrbana for undergraduate and graduate studies, then finished with a Ph.D. in accounting from Texas Tech University. At UNC, Reed mainly focuses on the auditing and financial accounting branches within accounting. Reed does not only
teach about auditing but integrates it as a main aspect of his life. Reed is involved in the accounting community by researching and publishing journals related to auditing and accounting education issues. He has also worked for Ernst & Young and KPMG Peat Marwick — two very large CPA firms. Reed has put his knowledge to great use through his public accounting profession as well as a faculty member for the University of Colorado-Boulder, Texas Tech University, Ferris State University and the University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana. Not only has Reed traveled the country teaching accounting, but he also ven-

Accountant’s Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. Here at UNC, Reed is quite active within Beta Alpha Psi — the honorary accounting organization — and the Professional Accounting Association.

Although surprised, he was grateful for all of the students that voted for him. “I thank each and every

Roma recognized for food, atmosphere, philanthropy LAUREL CASEY news@uncmirror.com Roma pizza has been a staple in Greeley for college students and community members since 1988. Along with receiving the Best of UNC Pizza award again this year, Roma has been recognized by The Greeley Tribune for outstanding food as well as being a favorite hang out and chow spot near campus. “The assortment of mixed drinks that come with it,” said Dan Bear, a Roma manager and senior communication studies and recreation and tourism major, about what else

Roma has been serving up pizza for college kids since 1988. makes Roma so great. Roma sees between 1,800 and 2,000 costumers per week and strives to provide a friendly atmosphere with vintage concert posters, live sports on televisions and the recent addition of live music. The restaurant is considering
hosting live music on Fridays and serving drinks after the last meals of the night have been served. Roma offers 15 beers on tap, six types that are bottled, and with plenty of appetizers, salads, pasta, sandwiches, pizza and carolis to choose from, there is
something even the pickiest eater will love. The first use of the building that Roma calls home was a Catholic church. The next time you are in, take a peek at the “Church of Rock and Roll” poster above the bar. Roma has been known for helping the community by hosting a wide variety of fundraisers which have helped a school in Haiti, Relay for Life at UNC, the recovery of Joplin, Mo., after the tornado in 2011, as well as many other endeavors. “I like how college-oriented it is,” said Cameron White, a Roma manager and senior biological sci-
ences and secondary education major. “I like seeing familiar faces, friends and meeting college kids.” Roma’s new deck, installed in front of the restaurant this past year, has created more seating and catered to customers that want to enjoy their food and drinks in the sunshine and fresh air. The most popular items are the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and Bay Breeze Bazooka; when asked to name their favorite pizzas, staff members favored the Hot House (hot sausage, jalapenos, red onions, pepperoni, cream cheese, pineapple, mozzarella), Mama Mia (Genoa salami,
sun dried tomatoes, feta, ricotta, roasted red peppers, garlic, mozzarella) and A Nutty Idea (Pepperoni, tomatoes, cream cheese, mozzarella, and cashews) were their favorites. “I love seeing regulars and being able to see the close community of costumers and employees,” said Paige Blasco, a manager who is between undergraduate and graduate school. Roma will be gearing up for its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2013 where the community will come together and celebrate the good food and friendly staff that have kept costumers rolling in for so long.

Cheba Hut takes best sandwich Patrick’s recognized as best bar ALICE LAMPHERE news@uncmirror.com
The votes have been cast and the Best Sandwich is at Cheba Hut located on 8th Avenue. The restaurant has been open for business and serving the students of UNC for three years. The manager is currently Mitch Jones, who graduated from UNC himself in 2009. “A creative theme is what makes the sandwiches themselves stand out,” Jones said. What makes them so good, and definitely backs up the vote for Best Sandwich, is the fact that
Cheba Hut uses quality ingredients. “We make them with lots of love,” Jones said. “They’re customizable by taste, so it’s however you like it, whenever you like it.” Beyond having tasty and affordable sandwiches, the atmosphere inside Cheba Hut plays a part in the reason for its continued success as a student favorite. Junior Veronica Vialpando said the atmosphere is the best part of working at Cheba Hut. “It’s what makes the job,” Vialpando said. “We can all rely on each other,

Patrick’s Irish Pub, located in downtown Greeley, has provided the of-age college students with a variety of well-crafted beers. For this year’s Best of UNC, Patrick’s won Best Bar — and this isn’t for the first time either. Patrick’s has the comfortable pubstyle feel, with a dark hardwood interior and a friendly atmosphere with a great selection of drinks. “We have the most beers on tap (in Greeley),” said Kristin Hamling, manager of Patrick’s. “We like to bring people in to try new things. It’s kind of a learning experience.”
JAISEE STARR | THE MIRROR
A crowd at Patrick’s Irish Pub is not uncommon. With the most beers on tap, it’s a student and Greeley resident favorite. Patrick’s has always been a college-friendly bar. Asked about the recent open-container law passed in Greeley, allowing barhoppers to bring their beers from bar to bar, Hamling explained the change. “It’s made Friday night even crazier,” Hamling said. “We’d love to see more students come on Friday and get involved.” Friday nights at Patrick’s
features live music to help create the party atmosphere. Maybe one of its strongest points, though, is the bar’s selection of beers. Hamling would encourage a newcomer to Patrick’s try a beer they are unfamiliar with. “Try a new beer; it’s all good pub beer,” Hamling said. “People like to try things out of their comfort zone here, and they usually really enjoy it.”

Rio receives top honors for best margaritas in town ANTONIO HILL news@uncmirror.com
SAMANTHA VALENZUELA | THE MIRROR
The Rio’s margarita is a favorite.
The Rio Grande restaurant in Greeley is known for great food and a fun environment, but most of all, its margaritas. For the second year in a row now, The Rio has been voted best mar-
garita by the students from the University of Northern Colorado. This has a lot of people wondering just what is it that makes these margaritas so special. “I think it goes a long with our mission to provide sanctuary to the world,” said Shannon Hayhurst, manager
at The Rio. “To offer the best margaritas and Mexican food on this side of the Rio Grande.” Most of the food offered at The Rio is made from scratch and that same amount of care is put into the margaritas. The Rio has been in the community for 27 years and the same
margarita has been offered that entire time. “It all started when the three founders decided to mix a whole of tequila and other ingredients while listening to James Brown and created a masterpiece,” Hayhurst said. “They initially forgot the
recipe the next morning but tried again and wrote it down this time.” So it just goes to show some things do not need to change with time to remain delicious. The voters have spoken, as the Rio retains its title as the best margarita in Greeley.
Students select Wilson Hall’s Terrell Wallin as best resident assistant KELSEY HAMMON news@uncmirror.com UNC students have voted for their favorite resident assistant on campus and Terrell Wallin has won. Wallin, a junior with a double major in journal-
ism and philosophy, has been an RA on the second floor of Wilson Hall for the fall semester and has gotten to know his residents and staff quite well. “Wilson Hall is a great place to live because it’s a small enough hall that you can get to know
everyone,” he said. For Wallin, being an RA seemed like a great job. He said it presented him with the opportunity to help the Wilson residents and encouraged their involvement within the community. When preparing for his role as
an RA, he drew on his own experience and contemplated the qualities seen in a good resident assistant. Wallin also said he enjoys going out of his way to spend time with his residents to build meaningful relationships.
“We try to hang out a lot,” Wallin said. “Lately we’ve been involved in a game of copy and paste. If someone says something funny we say, ‘copy,’ and then later we will make them say it again by demanding, ‘paste’!”
