A True Horseman With a Keen Eye, A Gentle Hand and A Tall Tale Well Told

Friends and family gathered at Field and Main in Marshall for a memorial dinner in remembrance of race horse trainer Billy Turner (1940-2021). His career included what only eleven trainers since 1919 have accomplished-- winning the coveted Triple Crown trophy that goes to the winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Turner won with Seattle Slew in 1977 and the horse warmed the hearts of many. His wife, Pat Turner, assisted by her daughter, Jessica Rich, and Tom Gorman presented a captivating slide show. Many spoke and nine-year-old grandson Silas Turner channeled his grandpa with a jaunty tweed cap. There were tears and laughter, with flowers emulating the Kentucky Derby blanket of red roses, Preakness Black-eyed Susans and Belmont white carnations.
