What’s Happening on Emotional Roadshow? Photos by Meagan Martin

Words by Heather Zalabak
Twenty One Pilots have taken off on the Emotional Roadshow Tour Everyone’s favorite duo, Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph, have head out on their first ever arena tour. Twenty One Pilots are incredibly well known for their eccentric live show traditions, such as Joseph going into the crowd during “Holding On To You”, Dun taking his drum kit onto the crowd during “Ride”, and the “Trees” confetti finale where they both take a drum onto platforms to play. Obviously, the guys are very much involved in the audience when it comes to their live performances. But this time around, they have managed to take their show up a notch on the Emotional Roadshow Tour. The Blurryface era has brought on most of the new show traditions, but there is a lot more to expect on the Emotional Roadshow Tour. Set list wise, the guys have thrown in new medleys to put the “emotion” in “Emotional Roadshow.” The set list has featured a series of covers including “My Heart Will Go On” by Céline Dion, “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles, “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber and “Jump Around” by House of Pain. Dun even substitutes his drum kit for a trumpet throughout the duration of the covers. In addition to their lively covers, the set list has also included a medley of older songs dating back to the albums Twenty One Pilots and Regional at Best. The old mix includes emotional fan favorites such as “The Pantaloon”, “Fall Away”, “Johnny Boy”,
“Forest”, “Addict With A Pen”, “March To The Sea”, and “Kitchen Sink”. Not only have they brought back tear jerking songs from the early eras and some feel good covers, Twenty One Pilots have also taken their performance tricks to the next level. The guys have stepped into a different direction when it comes to their engagement with the crowd. Instead of only relying on their drum-platform routines, a typical night at Emotional Roadshow is accompanied by a disappearance trick, a mini drum line, and even a human hamster ball. During their song “Hometown,” there is a

brief interlude where a different backtrack plays and Joseph is covered with a dark tarp. He is shown to have disappeared as the backtrack plays, and then appears randomly in another place that is typically an arena balcony. From there Joseph and Dun finish “Hometown” from where they left off, but in their different locations. Then comes possibly the wildest stunt of the show: the human hamster ball. Instead of just typical crowd surfing Joseph hops into a giant, red plastic ball and runs across the pit during “Guns For Hands.” The ball routine is no less than extraordinary. Finally, throughout the Blurryface single “Tear In My Heart,” Dun stands side by side with the gas mask characters featured in the “Lane Boy” music video. Together they perform a drum line solo backed by a synthesizer based remix track. The U.S. portion of Emotional Roadshow is currently in full swing! With a performance as odd and sensational as Twenty One Pilots’, a variety of show dates have sold out. Find out if tickets for your city are still available at

GET TO KNOW SYMONE CAMARGO Interview by Heather Zalabak
Symone Camargo, a college student in Washington state, is a music lover and concert enthusiast. We got to hear about her adventures all along the west coast.
42
Tell us a little about yourself.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
Hello, I’m Symone Camargo and I’m a student at Western Washington University! I love going to concerts and live music, the whole community and culture behind it is very interesting to me.
Hands down my favorite two bands are Walk the Moon and Sir Sly. They’re sort of on different ends of the spectrum as far as sound but they’re both really special to me in their own way.
Southern California is a long way from Seattle or Portland, what was it like traveling to shows in California? Yeah, it’s about 1,200 miles, ha ha! It was so weird and crazy knowing I was getting on a plane to go see a band. I never would have even imagined that a few years ago, but both times were each one of the best experiences of my life.
How were the California shows different from the ones that were closer to home? Well, at home I have my concert friends and the concert community, but in California there’s my Walk the Moon friends and the Walk the Moon community. Though they seem like they would be extremely similar, considering they both revolve around live shows and bands, they aren’t. The WTM community understands me unlike any other.
How many Walk the Moon shows have you attended in total and where?

43
I have been to 10 shows, 5 in Portland, Oregon, 2 in Seattle, Washington, 2 in Hollywood, California and 1 in San Diego, California.
What are your favorite memories out of all of your Walk the Moon experiences? Definitely The Piñata Project and my trips to California!
What is The Piñata Project and how did it come about? The Piñata Project is a project I did for their Portland show of the first run of the Talking Is Hard Tour in 2015. It came about one night while I was watching their music video for “Quesadilla” and I saw they had a piñata and I thought it would be cute to get them another. Then I got the idea to fill it with notes of love and appreciation for what they do from as many fans as I could. I know a lot of fans want to be able to tell them how they feel, but don’t get the opportunity because they can’t go to a show or stay after to talk. I know it always made me happy to hear when someone would pass along my message and I wanted to be able to do that for people too.

What was the result of the project? I got nearly 200 messages submitted to me on Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram and the day of in line. The band accepted it so graciously. It surprised me how much it ended up meaning to them because at first I thought it was just a silly little project and had no expectation for it.

What is it about Walk the Moon that makes them so special to you and makes them stand out from other artists? They are just such unique guys. They are so kind and loving and they care so much about their fans. They had a huge impact on my life and how I view the world and have given and still give me a lot of strength. They stand out because they do everything in their power for their fans and I’ve never seen anything like it.
