TAKAYO SIDDLE Head Men’s Basketball Coach Takayo Siddle, a key lieutenant for Kevin Keatts during UNCW’s resurgence in men’s basketball earlier this decade, is in his second season with the Seahawk program. Siddle, 35, was named head coach on March 13, 2020, and is making his fifth coaching stop and first as a head coach. He previously served as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy, Gardner-Webb, UNCW and NC State. In his inaugural head coaching season at UNCW in 2020-21, Siddle guided the Seahawks to the championship of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic and steered the Seahawks through a campaign that presented numerous scheduling challenges due to COVID-19. Siddle played for and coached with Keatts and served as interim head coach for the Seahawks in March of 2017 before joining his longtime mentor on the NC State bench. Siddle is a tireless recruiter and was tabbed the No. 4 recruiter in the country in 2019. During his three-year stay at UNCW from 2014-17, Siddle helped the Seahawks return to prominence in the CAA, winning three regular season championships and two CAA Tournament crowns (2016, 2017). The Seahawks went 72-28 overall in Siddle’s three years and advanced to the postseason all three campaigns, including the CIT (2015), NCAA (2016) and NCAA (2017). He recruited five All-CAA selections as the Seahawks went 48-14 in the circuit. Siddle launched his coaching career in 2009-10 as a member of Keatts’ staff at Hargrave, beginning a long, successful relationship with his mentor. The Tigers featured 12 NCAA Division I signees, including five in the ACC, SEC, Big East and Big Ten Conferences. Siddle then spent four years at Gardner-Webb. He was hired as an assistant coach at GWU by former head coach and current Ohio State skipper Chris Holtmann, who served as an assistant coach during Siddle’s freshman, sophomore and junior years in Boiling Springs. A native of Eden, NC, Siddle was a prep standout for Coach John Harder at Morehead High School, averaging 27.0 points, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals in his senior season with the Panthers. Siddle earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Gardner-Webb in 2009. uncwsports.com 7

JOSEPH D’ANTONIO CAA Commissioner Founded in 1985 Holds championships in 22 sports Features 10 members, with television homes in CAA market exceeding 19 million CAA members have combined to capture 18 national team championships with 33 individual national champions, 14 national Player of the Year honorees, 14 national Coach of the Year winners and 13 Honda Award recipients. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball. CAA teams have combined to win 43 games in postseason play since 2006, including a pair of NCAA Final Four appearances.

JIMMY BASS Director of Athletics Seasoned collegiate administrator Jimmy Bass begins his second decade as the leader of UNCW Athletics in 2021-22. The second longest-tenured athletic director in the history of the program behind founder William J. Brooks, the energetic Bass took over the helm of the program in October of 2010 and has helped the Seahawks achieve tremendous success in the playing arena and in the classroom. The native North Carolinian introduced a comprehensive strategic plan during his inaugural year and unveiled another five-year plan in late July 2018. Under Bass' leadership, the Seahawks have captured 27 Colonial Athletic Association championships during his tenure. With a recognized expertise in marketing and fundraising, Bass immediately restructured the department's fundraising arm and orchestrated a $2 million renovation to venerable Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks also reached a sponsorship consulting partnership with IMG Worldwide. From 2012-14, he served as president of the CAA, assisting the league with its expansion and other key initiatives. He is currently a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee. Bass came to UNCW after spending three years as senior associate athletics director for external operations at East Carolina. He has had held previous positions at Mississippi State, NC State, Pittsburgh, UNCW and Davidson. Bass, 65, is in his second stop in the Port City after serving as UNCW's first full-time athletics fundraiser in 1986. As executive director of the UNCW Student Aid Association (Seahawk Club) and associate director of athletics, he bolstered the school's athletic scholarship efforts and pushed membership in the Seahawk Club from 250 to 1,100 during his three-year stay. Bass has had a wide variety of experience in his administrative career, including development, ticketing, marketing and fundraising. Bass earned a bachelor's degree in speech communication from NC State in 1978 before completing his master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1980. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Bass is married to the former Sarah Ruark, and the couple has a son, Corey, daughter-in-law, Marianne, and two grandsons, Easton and Preston. uncwsports.com 15

JOSE V. SARTARELLI Chancellor Dr. Jose V. Sartarelli took office July 1, 2015, as the sixth chancellor and ninth leader of the University North Carolina Wilmington. He brings more than 35 years of professional leadership experience to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Under his leadership, the university is focused on diversity, equity and inclusion; globalization; ethics and integrity; and excellence and innovation. He has announced plans to retire effective June 30, 2022. During Chancellor Sartarelli’s tenure, the university continues to implement its Strategic Plan; has set records for annual enrollment, graduation and philanthropic giving; increased community, military and international partnerships; enhanced online educational offerings; and added several new academic programs. The university also secured its highest gift in university history and supported the launch of the first satellite sent into space by a UNC System institution. Chancellor Sartarelli has guided the university through significant challenges, including the global COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricanes Florence and Dorian. The university’s growth includes about $450 million in planned and storm-related campus improvements. This includes renovation of Dobo Hall and construction of Veterans Hall, the University Film Center, the Central Parking Deck, new student housing and dining facilities, and other academic, athletic and administrative support facilities. UNCW consistently earns recognition in national rankings and was recently elevated to the classification of “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. UNCW is included among the nation’s Top 100 Public National Universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. More than 18,000 students were enrolled in fall 2021, a university record. A native of Brazil, Chancellor Sartarelli received a bachelor of business administration in marketing from the São Paulo School of Business Administration in São Paulo, Brazil. He then attended Michigan State University as a Fulbright Scholar, earning an MBA in marketing and a doctorate in business administration. The Chancellor previously served at West Virginia University as the Milan Puskar Dean of the College of Business and Economics and chief global officer. Before transitioning into higher education, Chancellor Sartarelli spent three decades in international marketing and management with Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Eli Lilly and Co.

KAREN BAREFOOT Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Barefoot, a nationally known women’s basketball coach who has built successful programs at four different institutions, enters her fifth season as the Seahawks’ bench boss in 2021-22. Barefoot, the 11th head coach in program history, has brought winning back to UNCW over the last four years, with the Seahawks posting 47 victories, including an 18-12 record in 2018-19 that secured the team’s first winning season in seven years. In her first four seasons, the Seahawks have had six All-CAA selections, including a school-record three honorees in 2018-19. Junior guard Za’Nautica Downs was named CAA Sixth Player of the Year last season, while Rebekah Banks (2017-18) and Lacey Suggs (2019-20) have received the CAA’s Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Barefoot’s squads have also won a game in the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship in three of her first four years and have reached the quarterfinals in all four seasons. Barefoot took over the UNCW program after leading Old Dominion to 103 wins in six years with five winning seasons and three postseason appearances. She also spent three years as the bench boss at CAA rival Elon, piloting the Phoenix to its first 20-win season in 2010-11 and an appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Barefoot served as an assistant coach at Old Dominion from 2005-08, helping the Lady Monarchs compile a 77-23 record with three CAA Tournament crowns. ODU won at least 22 games in each season, including a 31-5 mark in 2007-08 with an appearance in the Sweet 16. A native of Newport News, VA, Barefoot coached at Lenoir-Rhyne for four seasons, leading the Bears to their first South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002-03. Barefoot began her coaching career at The Apprentice School from 1995-2001. The two-time NSCAA Coach of the Year compiled a 103-41 record with three postseason appearances, including the 2001 NSCAA Tournament title. Barefoot, a two-time Kodak/WBCA All-America selection at Christopher Newport, led the Captains to three NCAA Tournament berths while becoming the first player (male or female) in NCAA basketball history to collect 2,000 career points and 1,000 career assists. Barefoot, who has been a part of 20 winning seasons in her 26 years as a college coach, has earned Hall of Fame recognition three times in her career.
