Sixty years ago, Stanley O. Johnson, then Assistant Professor of Art, assembled the Old Main Sphere at the site of the first campus building. Sixteen-foot-tall posts support the half-ton iron globe laced with figures representing educational development and UND’s eternal quest for knowledge. A gift from Hal and Kathy Gershman, members of the Adelphi Circle, provides a space for modern learning in UND’s oldest building. The oldest building on UND’s campus houses the Dr. Kathleen and Hal Gershman Graduate Center. Opening in 2021, the Center is a hub for graduate students and graduate education. But before Kathy and Hal, ’66, invested in the building, it survived vacancy and the threat of demolition several times. Known as the Oxford House when it was built in 1902 and rechristened the J. Lloyd Stone Alumni Center in 1981, the building has been home to University presidents, students, the art department, and the UND Alumni Association & Foundation. And now, grad students. “We don’t build things like that today so preserving them is important,” said Hal. “If you can preserve old [buildings], it’s honoring its past and it’s a beauty of its own,” Kathy added. Kathy Gershman joined UND’s faculty in 1984 and retired in 2015 as professor and former chair of the UND Department of Educational Foundations and Research. Hal Gershman is a

successful Grand Forks business owner and former president of the Grand Forks City Council. The newly restored Gershman Graduate Center, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, provides a home for UND grad students to prepare for their futures. The center is outfitted with technology to enable hybrid and streaming workshops, spaces to accommodate distance students when they’re on campus, multiple meeting rooms for student collaboration, and an indoor lounge and outdoor patio. “We’re very fortunate at UND to have a place specifically dedicated for graduate students and graduate education. Students have really embraced it,” said Julie Bean, Director of Graduate Student Engagement and the Gershman Graduate Center. “We host a variety of activities,” Julie continued. “We host dissertation and thesis defenses, writing retreats, workshops, and networking events. We’ve brought in representatives

Graduate students don’t have to go to multiple places across campus; they can come here to get their questions answered.” With the University’s history as its backdrop, the Gershman Graduate Center drives peer discussion and

mentorship for graduate students at UND, all of which inspired the Gershmans to give back to the University of North Dakota. “We’re hoping we gave (the building) another 100 years,” Hal said.

REVOLUTIONIZE NURSING Alumna’s gift provides realistic simulators for future nurses.

When Kristine (Aarthun) Solberg, ’69, was taking nursing classes at UND in the mid-to late-’60s, fellow students served as each other’s “patients.” “We had to pass a nasogastric tube down each other’s noses,” Kris recalled. “We put the flexible, rubberlike tube up through the nose, up through the septum, and down through the back of the throat into the stomach.” She said it was a most unpleasant experience.

Almost six decades later, the learning landscape has evolved significantly for students at UND’s College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines (CNPD). The Clinical Resource & Simulation Center (CRSC) now offers a state-ofthe-art environment with low-, medium-, and high-fidelity manikins that provide simulated learning experiences for nursing, nutrition and dietetics, social work, and graduate-level students. While low-fidelity models remain static, high-fidelity models respond with

voices, facial expressions, and moving body parts, simulating scenarios like infant distress, childbirth, or adult emergencies. Kris – who spent most of her career teaching prenatal and Lamaze classes – and her husband, Bob Solberg, ’69, donated several simulators to the CNPD, and they’re housed in the newly named Kristine Aarthun Solberg Maternal Child Simulation Suite.

NEW VICTORIA – THE BIRTHING SIM

According to Nancy Geske-Larson, CNPD simulation manager, “New Victoria,” the birthing sim, allows students to practice various scenarios by snapping on different bellies – a contraction belly, a birthing belly, a belly for practicing Leopold maneuvers (repositioning the fetus), and one simulating a C-section for graduate students. Students can track contractions, use a fetal monitor to observe the baby, and even experience complications like postpartum hemorrhage, a situation that can get “pretty hairy, pretty fast,” Nancy said. “Students get to be the nurse in charge, feel that stress, and practice critical thinking skills.” In the lab, faculty can pause the process to explain different interventions, providing a place

to learn without impacting patient safety. “Students are more comfortable and prepared when they go to hospitals after seeing a birth here first,” Nancy said. The birthing sims are among many “patients” in the CRSC. The lab’s highest fidelity sims are designed for students studying to become certified nurse anesthetists. Others provide the opportunity for students to hone their nursing skills.

THE SUSIES – ADULT SIMS

Susie 2000 is the main adult simulator used by UND undergraduate nursing students. Her eyes dilate, and she makes lung, heart, and bowel sounds. Students can check her pulse, hook up IVs, insert catheters, and give her blood. First-semester students learn basic assessments on UND’s mid-fidelity sim, the Susie 1000. In addition

to checking heart, lungs, and blood pressure, students practice patient communication.

based on burn percentages, while also addressing their psychosocial needs.”

“When students are new, communicating – actually talking to a patient – can be foreign to them,” Nancy said. “They need to learn to communicate with family members, even kids, in a highstress hospital environment.”

The burn patient is an example of how sims expose students to unique situations. Hayden said those experiences increase confidence and result in safer patient outcomes.

Conversations occur when Nancy and CRSE Simulation Operations Specialist Paula Reitz provide the patient’s voice from the control room. “We talk into a headset and the voice comes through the manikin.” Students also practice with Sim Converse, a medical simulation platform that uses AI to play the role of the patient. “The AIgenerated response is just like talking to a person,” Nancy said. “Listening to it is mind-blowing!” Other “patients” residing in the CRSC include “Geri,” a geriatric simulator who can sit up and has facial and body features similar to a geriatric patient, as well as pediatric and baby sims.

SIMS GROW UP

Since Nancy started at UND 13 years ago, she said technology has increased tenfold. She’s seen students go from practicing procedures on each other to working on early sims that looked like department store manikins, to today’s sims that track people with their eyes and respond to touch. “Students are using sims in higher-acuity-type scenarios on patients of all ages for almost any issue.” After touring the lab and the birthing suite that bears her name, Kris was impressed. “This is revolutionizing nursing,” she said. “Students will be better nurses.”

Hayden Reitmeier, a current UND nursing student, learned about burn victims using sims. “The CRSC team actually singed the sim’s hair so the room smelled like someone was just burned,” he said. “Some classmates and I had to assess the patient’s burns and calculate fluid needs

Pancratz Career Development Center, made possible by Budge Circle member Linda Pancratz, offers real-world advice for real-world success. During Lauren Cain’s four years at UND, she landed three internships and graduated with a full-time position. She credits the Pancratz Mentor Program and her mentor, Alli Bauman, ’18, for helping her achieve these feats. The Mentor Program, one of many benefits at the Pancratz Career Development Center, is housed in the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration and is primarily funded by Linda Pancratz, ’76. A successful businesswoman, Linda has appreciated the benefits of mentorship throughout her career and helped develop the program in 2018. To date, nearly 140 partnerships established between students and mentors have helped prepare students for their current and future jobs.

Lauren, ’22, was drawn to UND because of the Pancratz Center’s resources. While attending Admitted Student Day in spring 2018, Lauren was blown away. “I immediately leaned over to my mom and said, ‘I am going to work there.’ A few months later, I was hired right before my freshman year began,” Lauren said. While helping other students as a marketing assistant, Lauren was able to take advantage of the resources for her own professional growth. The biggest benefit was her mentorship from Alli. Lauren was connected to Alli after a career goal assessment, and it was a perfect match. “Alli gave me real-world advice that put everything in perspective. For Alli, being a mentor is all about paying it forward. “I am a strong believer in the power of mentorship, and I wanted to give back to the students as people had previously done for me,” Alli said. Like many other mentors, her affinity for UND and the experience she gained as a student sparked her desire to connect with students.

Today, both Alli and Lauren enjoy careers enhanced by their time at UND and their involvement with the Pancratz Center. Alli continues to mentor students while Lauren is interested in becoming a mentor in the future.

PROTECTING OUR MILITARY

UND professor who leads high-profile defense project demonstrates how a gift from Smith Circle donors Mark and Claudia Thompson can fuel discovery. On Sept. 8, U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer spoke at the investiture ceremony of Dr. Jeremiah Neubert, the Mark and Claudia Thompson National Security Faculty Fellow in UND’s College of Engineering & Mines.

“North Dakota’s contribution to the security of the free world is far above our weight class,” said Cramer, the first North Dakotan to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“The goal is to give users better awareness of the battlefield by displaying information such as where enemies and mines are,” Dr. Neubert said. “We are also working on autonomous detection capabilities for things like other vehicles, people, and buildings – which will help operators drive at night without lights.”

Dr. Neubert is a mechanical engineering professor with expertise in augmented reality and visual tracking, and the son of a U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran. He is committed to discovering new ways to support our military. “Any way that I can help make the lives of military personnel safer and easier makes me feel good,” he said.

Dr. Neubert leads a team of UND researchers working on a multiyear Department of Defense contract to develop an augmented reality (AR) system for light military trucks.

The system will provide travel routes through challenging conditions like dust storms and navigation support when GPS is unavailable. It will also detect drones overhead. Truck operators will view the data in an AR “head’s up” display, which is projected onto the windshield in their line of sight. The display mirrors the actual depth and distance of what the operators would see while driving.

Mark Thompson, ’71, served as a KC-135 navigator in the Air Force after graduating from UND. He and Claudia (Roley), ’70, said they were shaped and formed by their four years as a military family, and created the Thompson National

Program supported by Clifford Circle member Chord Energy creates pathways for American Indian students at UND’s College of Nursing & Professional Development.

As a child, when Barb Anderson, ’10, visited her clinic on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in north-central North Dakota, she rarely saw people in scrubs who looked like her. But that has changed, thanks to a program she now directs at UND.

Since then, 336 undergrad and graduate students have gone through the program.

The Recruitment & Retention of American Indians into Nursing (RAIN) program was established 33 years ago within UND’s College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines (CNPD).

“Research tells us that one of the most important things for retention of students of color is creating that sense of belonging,” Barb said. “That’s where we come in.”

RAIN strives to be a “home away from home” for American Indian students, many of whom are first-generation college students coming from poverty.

RAIN’s seasonally decorated study areas and kitchen create a welcoming environment on the third floor of UND’s Nursing Building. Two full-time and two half-time nurse mentors (also RAIN alumni) are available to provide academic, financial, or emotional support to students. The program hosts a traditional meal and honor ceremony in conjunction with UND’s spring commencement, among other events that honor cultural values. This past year, RAIN’s services expanded to CNPD’s Social Work and Nutrition & Dietetics students. While the program is responsible for bringing in over $20 million in federal aid, there are limitations to what these dollars can cover. Through donor funds, the program is better able to meet the needs of its students.

For one student, that meant a new pair of glasses. For another, it meant car tires to travel to nursing rotations. “Having financial assistance makes all the difference in the world for our students; it allows them the opportunity to complete their education. Education is the key to creating an equitable society,” Barb explained. She says RAIN’s impact is multigenerational as children and grandchildren of RAIN graduates have enrolled in the program. And today, Barb can name several medical facilities serving Native populations where RAIN graduates are wearing scrubs.

While focusing locally on domestic violence prevention, Alpha Chi Omega recognizes its members for their service with scholarship award created by President’s Circle donor Tim Henry.

The UND Chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority donates thousands of dollars every year to the Grand Forks-based Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC). Like all Greek organizations on campus, the sorority raises money for a nonprofit organization in the community or one supported by its national organization.

CVIC has an on-campus location, making it easy for students to use the resource if they need it, said Amorelle Upton, ’23, who helped lead Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy for three years. “Seeing that our philanthropy can potentially be donated back to our students is something that sets us apart.”

As a leader of the sorority’s philanthropy, Amorelle became certified by the One Love Foundation to lead workshops about recognizing the signs of unhealthy relationships. She educated her sorority sisters and the wider Greek community while CVIC representatives held similar workshops at fraternities. Alpha Chi includes educational elements at their events. For example, at Mock Rock, a dance competition for fraternities and UND’s best attended Greek philanthropic event, a CVIC representative spoke to the audience about recognizing signs of domestic violence.

“I was grateful,” Amorelle said of the award and scholarship. “I had been nominated the year before and the second time, I had more experiences and was able to show the impact.” Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity member Alec Johnson received the award in 2022. The 2023 winners, announced in January 2024, were Bergen Stockstad of Kappa Delta and Jaxon Wetzel of Delta Tau Delta.

Gordon Henry Greek of the Year

The impact of Alpha Chi’s initiatives resonated in 2022 when Amorelle was honored as the Gordon Henry Greek of the Year. The annual award goes to two Greek students who go above and beyond their responsibilities to the Greek community and emulate the selflessness and genuine service of Gordon Henry, ’66, ’70, who was vice president of UND student affairs and served the University for 33 years. Winners of the award receive the Gordon and Pat Henry Endowed Scholarship, set up to honor Gordon and Pat by their son, Tim Henry.

The award also highlights the Greek community’s focus on philanthropy. UND Greek chapters collectively raised over $90,000 for philanthropic causes in 2022. Addela Sampel, UND coordinator of fraternity and sorority life, said service is a core value for the Greek community. “Chapters meet service hour requirements and philanthropy dollar goals each semester,” she said. “It’s something members of our sororities and fraternities are really proud of.”

Memorial initiative spreads holiday joy to local families in honor of a special UND football fan. It was the best day of his life. On December 8, 2001, 13-year-old Markus Bryant celebrated with the UND football team as they captured their first national championship. As he hoisted the trophy with the team, he pushed his personal battle aside. That season, Markus had become a regular guest at games and practices after writing letters of support to the team. “Never give up, because then you will achieve your goal,” he wrote. He also revealed that he had cancer.

A COURAGEOUS BATTLE

At age 11, Markus was diagnosed with a rare form of neuroblastoma, a difficult-to-cure cancer that forms in early stages of nerve cell development around the abdomen or chest. But his mom, Deb Oatman, said he wouldn’t let the sickness control his attitude. “He just loved life and loved people.” He attended school regularly and participated in sports, even when his schedule became dictated by doctors, nurses, and appointments. And he found time for his favorite team: UND Football, writing letters of encouragement throughout the season. His messages of positivity were received. After a turbulent 2002 season, UND Football wanted to leave an impact on the community, and created Holiday Magic from Markus to support families in tough circumstances. When the team first presented the idea to Markus, he was hesitant. “He didn’t want to stick out. He didn’t want to be

more important than anybody else. But the team eventually convinced him,” Deb said. Unfortunately, Markus couldn’t witness the start of the magic. Shortly after UND Football established Holiday Magic from Markus, the cancer took his life.

DELIVERING MAGIC

Every year since, the program has provided gifts and essentials for sick children during the holidays. Sue (Frank) Hafner, ’74, Markus’s nurse during his battle with cancer who helped to start the initiative, chooses the families based on referrals from local doctors and nurses. “We wanted to take the stress of Christmas off people’s plates and make it one less financial thing to worry about,” Sue said. “When a child has a serious illness, the whole family’s life revolves around doctor’s appointments and medical treatments, so this is our way of making their Christmas special.”

Holiday Magic benefits up to seven families each year, who humbly accept the gifts with gratitude as Markus would have. Fundraising happens year-round through a special memorial website. As defensive coordinator on the 2001 national championship team, current UND head coach Bubba Schweigert, ’95, remembers the never-give-up spirit of Markus. “I think we’re all pretty amazed at how much this has grown over the years, and it’s become such an important part of our football program,” Bubba said. “So much credit goes to the players for starting this tradition and keeping it going every year.”

CAPTAINS STEP UP

Before the football season, team leaders are chosen to be captains of Holiday Magic from Markus. One player who demonstrates positive qualities like Markus also receives a scholarship in his honor. Ted Mullin, a fifth-year linebacker and team captain, helped lead the initiative in 2023. “It’s fun to be a part of this tradition that we’ve had for over 20 years and to play a role in making the holidays special for these families,” Ted said. After getting a wish list from each family, the team goes shopping. Then, Sue and Deb host a giftwrapping party that includes current and former players, coaches, and others who had a connection to Markus. The final and most important part: delivering the presents. This year, families met at the Pollard Athletic

Center to open gifts and spend time with the team. Players played with the kids, signed autographs, and took photos; the children set their personal struggles aside and created lasting memories. “It’s very special to see the joy on kids’ faces when they receive the gifts and I’ll definitely miss it a lot,” Ted said.

TWO DECADES OF MAGIC

For over 20 years, Holiday Magic from Markus has helped sick children find joy during challenging circumstances. The program is a lasting symbol of Markus Bryant’s selfless and positive spirit. “He had a smile that you could never forget, and it was truly remarkable to see how he affected people around him at such a young age,” Bubba said. “Even in his toughest days, he seemed to enjoy providing encouragement.” Markus’s magic lives on.

First-ever Notes from the Nest gratitude event draws eager students to the Memorial Union to thank their scholarship donors the old-fashioned way. There are more ways than ever to express gratitude, but it’s hard to beat the feeling of receiving an old-fashioned, hand-written thank you note. UND students seemingly agree as they filled the Memorial Union with gratitude during the first-ever Notes from the Nest event in October. At the two-day event, students wrote thank you notes to donors who support their scholarships. They took full advantage of the chance to show their appreciation, often filling cards top-to-bottom with introductions, updates on their UND experience and future plans, and some fun facts in between. The event was made possible through a campuswide partnership among the UND Alumni Association & Foundation, UND Student Finance, and several colleges, schools and departments that brought many volunteers together. After the notes were turned in, students enjoyed free Deek’s Pizza and donuts, and entered their name for a scholarship drawing. They left with a positive feeling as they reflected on the generosity of UND alumni that keeps them going in the right direction.

Donors and educators lead the way for faculty excellence and transformative research. As one professor can touch the lives of many, one donor can make their great work possible. An endowed chair, professorship, or fellowship is among the highest academic honors that a university can bestow. It is both an honor to the named holder of the position and an enduring tribute to the donor who established it. This year, the UND Alumni Association & Foundation honored donors of endowed positions and the faculty who hold them through eight private investiture ceremonies, events, and other tributes. Endowed faculty members received a medallion or drape to symbolize their station of importance and donors received a matching token to commemorate their generosity. SATISFACTION FOR THE FUTURE

Alumni in Legacy Society contribute early to their testamentary endowments to see immediate impact. In 2018, a letter arrived at the UND Alumni Association & Foundation (UNDAAF) outlining a couple’s intention to leave a gift to UND in their will. Both retired and with no children of their own, Dave Dornacker, ’74, and Jody Spencer, ’84, wanted to leave a meaningful legacy for the next generation at their alma mater.

Their letter led to the establishment of two testamentary scholarship endowments. One would benefit students within the College of Arts & Sciences and the other for those studying occupational therapy. Both scholarships would support LGBTQ+ students or enrolled members of federally recognized Native American Tribes.

There was just one lingering question they had about their future gift. As with any bequest, the scholarships outlined in their will would be funded only after their passing. Could they start making an impact sooner? A conversation with

UNDAAF Senior Director of Gift Planning Shane Hersch led to their decision to contribute to their scholarships early. “If we didn’t decide to intentionally develop and plan for that now, we obviously have no say about it after we’re gone. We thought if we do something now, we might actually get to see some results, which we have,” Jody explained. While they both had positive experiences at UND that led to full careers – Dave as co-owner of a grain commodity trading company and Jody as an occupational therapist and director of a Minneapolisbased healthcare system – Dave and Jody were very aware of the struggles underserved students often face while earning a college degree and wanted to help. “It was an enormous adjustment for First Nations students coming from the reservation, particularly with no real

support system at the time,” Dave recalled. “Most LGBTQ+ students were still closeted, and support groups were in their infancy.” Although they’ve adjusted their will over time, UND has remained a top beneficiary because of the results they’ve experienced from this blended gift: enjoyment that comes from a current gift with the satisfaction of a legacy gift.

“Our first recipient’s thank-you note just about broke our hearts. It was from a single, First Nation mother trying to get her degree. You’ll never read a note as such if you don’t establish your scholarships while you’re living,” Dave said. “If we can help one disenfranchised student feel supported and get past barriers facing them, then we feel we have been successful.”
