STRENGTH TRAINING MISSION
It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.
Philosophy
We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff. The Fighting Sioux soccer team trains at the Betty Englestad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 2005-06 season.

SPORTS MEDICINE One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Division of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.
Steve Westereng
With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.
Director of Sports Medicine
The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Whether it is reading to area schoolchildren or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities.
The Big Event, the largest one-day community service event in the Red River Valley, brought together over 180 student-athletes with representation from almost every UND sports team. Nearly 750 hours were donated as volunteers helped with everything from painting houses to picking up trash in neighborhood parks. Soccer athletes (left) Becca Krynski, Alex Zarling, Rachael Loomis, (right) Kelsey Zachman, Sarah Penner and Veronika Zischka pose for a photo during The Big Event.

In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also recently served as the principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley. He and his wife, Marcia Jean, have four children.
Sue Jeno, an associate professor of physical therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. She has held the position since November 2006. Jeno has served as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee for six years and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION
Brian Faison begins his second year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 18 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network. North Dakota student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: 12 student-athletes were named academic all-district and a school-record six were named Academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships and 80 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors. Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set a record; football had the largest opening day crowed in the history of the program and set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average attendance. Competitively, North Dakota teams also enjoyed outstanding seasons: Men’s hockey won the MacNaughton Cup, its league-leading WCHA championship; women’s basketball went undefeated at home on its way to an 18-win season; men’s basketball had its first winning season in three years and volleyball went from a record of 6-23 the previous year to 24-8 last season. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as assistant vice president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley. (Above) Brian Faison presents former track and field standout Heidi Evans with her national championship ring. 2009 season outlook THE START OF A DECADE, THE END OF A DECADE A sense of excitement looms in the air for the 2009 University of North Dakota women’s soccer team as it gets ready to kick off its 11th season and second in the transition to Division I. After finishing last season 5-12, the Fighting Sioux have a lot to look forward to in the coming season when they will be returning 17 players, spending less time on the road (they will be playing almost twice as many home games as last year) and appearing in three major tournaments. When asked about how the transition is going, head coach Kristen
Gay said, “Those inside the program can see the changes daily and we are at the point where everyone is on board with what we want to accomplish. Those outside the program see results as progress and for our program they will start to come.”
A STRONG CORE The Sioux are losing seven players, bringing in five newcomers and returning 17 players. Of those 17 returning, 60 percent are upperclassmen: nine seniors and three juniors. Leading the way will be senior cocaptains Mandi Boehmer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Kirsten Zachman (Mahtomedi, Minn.).

“Our strengths this season will be our fitness base, our leadership and the fact that we will have a very old and experienced team,” Gay said.
“Our seniors are a large class with most of them getting some major minutes throughout their careers. This will be their final season and they get to end it with playing in a conference tournament.” Boehmer was second on the team in goals scored, finding the back of the net four times. Also returning will be Fargo native Rachael Loomis, who led the team in assists (seven), was second in points (13) and tied for third in goals (three), and senior netminder Lauren Sera who started all 17 games last year with a 2.78 goals-allowed average. Senior defensemen Brittany Harty (Jamestown, N.D.) and Ericka Lund (Andover, Minn.) will be leading the backfield while sophomore Veronika Zischka (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Becca Krynski (Rapid City, S.D.) will be returning starters.
The squad carries a practice goal to prepare for fall training.

2009 season outlook A MEANS TO AN END
ALONG THE WAY
An added motivation for the Sioux this season is that they will be playing for a championship at the end of the season in the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament, held Nov. 6-9 in Newark, N.J.
The GWC Tournament is not the only tournament the Sioux will be looking forward to this season, as they will be taking part in the University of Minnesota Tournament and the University of Nebraska Tournament.
“The conference tournament is definitely something our players are looking forward to and being able to represent the University of North Dakota during the postseason is something that is important to them,” Gay said. As the conference began planning for team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field. Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions. The associate members, plus NJIT, will make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley will play in the West.
“I’m excited about this year’s schedule,” Gay said. “We will see some familiar faces and some new ones as well. The tournament at the University of Minnesota will be a great homecoming for the majority of our team. It’s always nice to play in front of family and friends. The Sioux have eight players with hometowns within a 30-mile radius of Minneapolis and a ninth within 90 miles. Kirsten Zachman also played for the University of Minnesota during her freshman and sophomore years before transferring. That tournament is not the only one that will be a homecoming as seniors Holly Remmenga (Lincoln, Neb.) and Meagan Houlihan (Lincoln, Neb.) will be returning home for the Nebraska Tournament (Lincoln, Neb.) and head coach Kristen Gay will be returning to her collegiate stomping grounds. She played for the Cornhuskers from 1995-1998 and led the team to a Big 8 title in 1995 and Big XII regular-season titles in 1996 and 1997.

Co-captain Kirsten Zachman
that have battled UND in the past. “I think the advantage for us seeing the same teams is that we won’t be intimidated and we will know what to expect,” Gay said. “There were a couple of games that were close and we played with them but couldn’t sustain it for the entire 90 minutes. We have tried to correct some of those issues in the offseason.”
HOME SWEET HOME
A FAMILIAR FACE
Another comforting thought for UND will be its home schedule. Having only scheduled four games in its home confines of Bronson Field last year, the Sioux went 2-1 (one no contest), but are set for seven dates this campaign on its own soil.
The Sioux played 10 teams last year that the program had never faced. This year, its second of transition, there will be a lot more common opponents with 10 of 17 games being played against teams
“Playing at home as much as we do this season will be an advantage for us,” Gay said. “To be able to play on our home field, in front of our home crowd, and not travel as much is something everyone is looking forward to.”

Head coach Kristen Gay discusses action with the Fighting Sioux team

2008 in review shutout and Rachael Loomis scored the games only goal for a 1-0 victory. Niagara defeated the Sioux, 2-0, to conclude the tournament where senior captain Lara Traczyk, junior Ericka Lund and Hermann were all named to the all-tournament team.
In a hectic season in which the University of North Dakota women’s soccer team was slated to play 18 games, with 12 matches against Division I opponents and 14 road games, the Fighting Sioux finished the campaign 5-12-0 (one no contest) in its first year of transitioning into Division I competition. The Sioux concluded the season with a 2-10-0 record against Division I opponents, 3-1 record against Division II opponents and 0-1-0 against NAIA. Opening the season on the road, UND got its first taste of being a Division I team and the competition as the Sioux took on Weber State in Ogden, Utah, and Utah Valley in Orem, Utah. Even though the team returned home winless (0-3 vs. WSU and 0-5 vs. UVU), it gained top-notch experience early in the season which would pay off down the road. Northern State was next up on the schedule for UND’s first home game of the season. Juniors Kristen Zachman and Lauren Hermann scored their first goals of the season, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Sera stopped all six shots she faced to lift the Sioux to a 2-0 win giving first-year head coach Kristen Gay her first career win. It was a short homestand as the Sioux immediately went back out on the road, this time for a weekend bus trip to Green Bay, Wis., to take on the Phoenix with a stop on the way home in St. Paul, Minn., to take on Concordia-St. Paul. This trip would end with better results than the opening road trip as the Sioux battled to a 3-1 loss against UGB before dominating the Golden Bears, 6-0, to return home with a 2-3-0 record. UND took the momentum it had gained into a three-game stint on the East Coast versus three Division I opponents in Buffalo, N.Y. The Sioux started with Drexel and Niagara in the Niagara Tournament before staying to take on Canisius College. The trip couldn’t have started any better as Gay led the Sioux to their first-ever Division I win. Sera recorded her fifth-career 40
The trip ended on a bit of a down note as the Sioux took a 1-0 lead into halftime against Canisius, looking for its second Division I win of the season and three-game road trip, but Canisius scored two unanswered goals in the second half to escape with a 2-1 win. The Sioux spent the following weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with matchups against Park University (NAIA) and Northern Iowa, where PU squeaked by with a 1-0 win, followed by a 3-1 Northern Iowa victory. The Sioux wrapped up their eight-game road trip in Missoula, Mont., with a 4-1 loss, before returning home to take on rival South Dakota in their first game at Bronson Field in over a month. The Sioux fared no better as they suffered a 4-2 setback to the Coyotes. In a midweek matchup against Mary in Bismarck, N.D., the Sioux dropped another heartbreaker in a 2-1 overtime loss. UND looked like it was going to get back in the win column against Rocky Mountain on Senior Day at Bronson Field, when the Sioux led 2-1 at halftime but the game was called ‘no contest’ due to lightning and rain. Minnesota, Crookston came to town for UND’s final home game and the Sioux had an offensive explosion, scoring eight goals to get a much needed win in an 8-1 route. The final three games of the season came on the road against Drake, Creighton and a rematch with the Coyotes. Drake and Creighton were two more good learning experiences against top-notch D-I teams, but showing the Sioux still have some work to do looking towards the future with 9-0 and 6-0 losses, respectively. The season concluded on a high note as the underclassmen went into the offseason and the seniors would end their careers with a 2-0 shutout over the rival Coyotes. Four Sioux players in Meagan Houlihan, Ericka Lund, Sarah Thaden and Lara Traczyk were all named to the fall Academic All-Great West Conference team.

The 2008 season was a significant milestone for Fighting Sioux soccer, marking the 10th year of a program on the rise. From its early days on the artificial turf at Memorial Stadium to its present home at Bronson Field, the UND soccer program has made tremendous strides during its first decade of existence. Prior to the 2008 season, UND’s first as a Division I program, the Sioux unveiled a brand-new, state-of-the-art scoreboard at Bronson Field. In 2007, the Sioux set a single-season attendance record, with nearly 1,900 fans attending UND’s home games over the course of the season. Over the years, UND has produced tremendous excitement on the field while maintaining a high standard of academic excellence in the classroom. The Sioux soccer honor roll lists a pair of NSCAA All-Americans, 22 all-conference performers, 25 academic all-conference selections and a pair of conference coaches of the year. With an impressive foundation on which to build, the Fighting Sioux enter the 2009 campaign with plenty of excitement surrounding the program. UND joined the burgeoning Great West Conference prior to the season and will now set its sights on its first Division I conference championship and a new chapter in the program’s history.

great west conference
The Great West took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world in July 2008 Commissioner when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members. Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October 2008. The conference conducted championships in several sports during the 2008-09 academic year – men’s cross country (won by UTPA), women’s cross country (Utah Valley), men’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), women’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), men’s golf (Houston Baptist), women’s golf (UTPA), men’s indoor track and field (Utah Valley) and women’s outdoor track (Utah Valley).
Ed Grom
Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball will begin league play in 2009-10. Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing members. Football within the Great West Conference entered another era in 2008 with the addition of two schools and the departure of two of the founding members of the league. The University of North Dakota and the University of South Dakota entered the league for the 2008 season after North Dakota State and South Dakota State departed for the Missouri Valley Football League. Because of a scheduling quirk, not all Great West teams played four league games, but the 2009 schedule will be a true round-robin. Great West members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah remain at-large candidates for NCAA I-AA post-season playoff consideration, with South Dakota and North Dakota becoming candidates in 2012. The conference has recently submitted its application for formal recognition to the NCAA.
