2010 NORTH DAKOTA SOCCER MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHILOSOPHY We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff. The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 200506 season.

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation. Steve Westereng Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Brian Faison

Brian Faison is his third year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 20 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network. In Faison’s second year, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: four student-athletes were named academic AllAmericans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships; and a school-record 111 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors. Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set another record; volleyball set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average and total attendance. Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons: volleyball, women’s basketball and softball all won Great West Conference championships; men’s hockey won the Broadmoor Trophy, the WCHA Final Five championship, and qualified for its eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance; and football enjoyed its seventh straight winning season. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (19781979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

2010 NORTH DAKOTA SOCCER

T

he University of North Dakota opens its third women’s soccer season under head coach Kristen Gay with a young team that will feature only three seniors, five returning starters and nine newcomers. The Fighting Sioux also look forward to a season nearly full of Division I opponents as they enter their third season of transition while renewing old rivalries and building new ones. “We really want to build off of last season,” Gay said. “We didn’t have the greatest conference season, but we were close in a lot of games that went to double-overtime, or a lot of games that could have gone either way. We are hoping our record will be a little better but I think everybody is in the right frame of mind. They looked at our record last year and they were not happy with that, but they were happy with the way they played, and think that will carry over to this year.” The Sioux wrapped up last year’s campaign with a 3-14-2 record. Highlight wins came over Northern Iowa to start the season and opening the Great West Conference tour-

nament defeating top-seeded and host New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Seven of the 12 Sioux losses came by one goal and they played in five overtime games proving that the Sioux were better than their record indicated. Gay believes that her team will be more competitive in 2009, as the returning core of players and the incoming new players will take steps to get them in that direction. “We definitely have some holes to fill from that senior class that left that was pretty big,” Gay said. “We are expecting our freshmen to come in and play right away. They are young, kind of wet behind the ears and don’t know any better. But if you look at last year with teams like South Dakota - who we played four times and struggled against – well, these incoming kids don’t know anything about them and will be just a different look from what some of these conference teams saw from last year.” The Sioux will be looking for players to step up. upon will be this year’s team captain, Alex Zarling, and last year’s leading scorer Rachael Loomis, both natives of Fargo, N.D. Zarling, along with Monica Stierman (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Holly Remmenga (Lincoln, Neb.), are the only seniors on this year’s team. “Since we only have six starters returning, it will be a great opportunity for the younger girls to prove themselves and gain some experience,” Zarling said. “It is important for the three of us to step up and be great examples for the future seniors who will eventually be the ones that are looked up to.” After having a good freshman season with three goals and seven assists for 13 points, Loomis nearly doubled her point output in her sophomore campaign with 11 goals and two assists, totaling 24 points. “After my freshman year, I wanted to set the bar higher for myself as a sophomore,” Loomis said. “I really focused on developing a better mental game to drive me. I felt we played more like a team in 2009, we understood each other’s strengths and weaknesses. I also focused my efforts on perfecting the parts of my game that were lacking in order to be a better player for my team. I wanted to be the goal scorer that led my team to victories, and I can say that my focus and drive throughout the preseason and season allowed me to achieve that.” “Rachael has really had two great seasons,” Gay added. “She is a pretty dynamic player off the ball and on the ball. ball on her feet, wants to score and wants to score the game-winner for us. On the flipside, conference players know who she is now, so she has her work cut out for her. But I think she is up to the challenge.” Sioux fans will have the opportunity to see the team at its home of Bronson Field on eight different occasions, including an alumni game, three Great West Conference games (Houston Baptist, South Dakota and Houston Baptist), two Division I nonconference tilts (Drake and Green Bay) and two non-conference Division II teams (Bemidji State and Minnesota State, Mankato). “In terms of the schedule we are excited,” Gay said. “We are home for seven games, and on the road, we have some pretty long trips but not as bad as it has been the past couple of years. To be able to be home and play in front of our fans is exciting.” More exciting news for this year’s squad is it will be renewing some old rivalries against against old North Central Conference rivals

in Minnesota State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The Sioux will open the season on Aug. 13 against SDSU in exhibition action before opening regular season play on the road in Fargo, N.D., versus NDSU.

In addition to the road conference games, the Sioux will head out on the road to take on some quality Division I teams in Montana, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Northern Iowa.

“We definitely want to play it up, but we don’t want to play it up too much,” Gay said. “It is a good deal for our program. It has been about five years since we have played them. I have been here for four and we haven’t played them, but I think from the standpoint of it being our alumni weekend, we should have a lot of people back for that. That is definitely an interesting game for them to be a part of and renew that rivalry, which should be good for both programs.”

The season will conclude the weekend of Nov. 5-8 in the battle for the title of conference champions in Houston, Texas, for the Great West Conference Championship. “All of the teams have been pretty tough,” Gay said. “On our side at least, I think everybody is pretty evenly matched. It could really be anybody’s game come October, and if the right team is peaking they should have a good shot and,

“I am so excited for this upcoming season,” Loomis said. “Our schedule shaped up great with more games played on our home turf to play to our UND fans. It has been a while since we have gotten a chance to play them and hopefully, we are the team that does it.” I think this game will be a big motivator for our team to push ourselves to the limit The gauge has been set by the team and get ready for the rest of the season.” and its captains to excel in Great West Conference play while pushing themselves to get better both collectively and individually during the season. “We are really pushing ourselves to excel in our conference play,” Zarling said. “I know by talking with a lot of the girls on the team, it is very important to everyone that our team is right up there with the other teams in our conference. I expect that we are going to have to play very hard to prove this and it is something that is very achievable for us.” ~GO SIOUX~

The Great West Conference took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world in Commissioner July 2008 when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members. Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, TexasPan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October 2008. The conference conducted championships in several sports during the 2008-09 academic year – men’s cross country (won by UTPA), women’s cross country (Utah Valley), men’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), women’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), men’s golf (Houston Baptist), women’s golf (UTPA), men’s indoor track and field (Utah Valley) and women’s outdoor track (Utah Valley).

Ed Grom

Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball will begin league play in 2009-10. As the conference began planning for team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field. Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions. The associate members, plus NJIT, will make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley will play in the West. Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing members. Football within the Great West Conference entered another era in 2008 with the addition of two schools and the departure of two of the founding members of the league. The University of North Dakota and the University of South Dakota entered the league for the 2008 season after North Dakota State and South Dakota State departed for the Missouri Valley Football League. Because of a scheduling quirk, not all Great West teams played four league games, but the 2009 schedule will be a true round-robin. Great West members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah remain at-large candidates for NCAA I-AA post-season playoff consideration, with South Dakota and North Dakota becoming candidates in 2012. The conference has recently submitted its application for formal recognition to the NCAA.
