2011-12 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

Philosophy

We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

2011-12 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

Steve Westereng

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

pRESIDENT Dr. Robert Kelley

Dr. Robert Kelley began serving as UND’s 11th president July 1, 2008. He had been dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999. Before then, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine, both at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the University of New Mexico, he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean, as well as other faculty capacities. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges, chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also served as principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. He and his wife, Marcia, who was a lecturer in the University of Wyoming Department of Communication Disorders, have four children.

Sue Jeno, an associate professor of physical therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. She has held the position since November 2006. Jeno has served as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee for six years and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. Jeno is a former NCAA Division I student-athlete and coach. After competing for the University of Michigan synchronized swimming team, she graduated and served as a coach for the Wolverines for two seasons.

Athletics director Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his fourth year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. In leading UND Athletics through the Division I transition, alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Fighting Sioux Club and endowment giving have enjoyed another record year; volleyball had a second record-breaking season at the turnstile, while women’s and men’s hockey both finished second in the nation in attendance. Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons resulting in two conference regular season championships, three conference post-season tournaments championships, four conference studentathletes of the year, three All-Americans, two national players of the year, a fifth trip to the Frozen Four in the past seven years, and a second place finish in the all-sports standings of the Great West Conference. In the classroom, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the fall and spring semesters; women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, men’ track and field and men’s golf were all recognized nationally for their academic performance, while UND student-athletes received the prestigious NCAA Top VIII and NCAA Elite 88 awards. Faison helped secure membership in the Big Sky Conference for 14 of UND sports. Competition will begin with the 2012-13 school year. And, he played a leadership role in the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference joining Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth and Nebraska Omaha. Conference play begins in 2013. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (19781979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

Years as Collegiate Head Coach: 8th Hometown: Salem, Ore. Alma Mater: Loyola Marymount (‘81, ‘91)

Kevin Galbraith, who was named head coach of UND’s men’s and women’s track and field programs on July 19, 2011, brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to Grand Forks, including a successful tenure at the helm of a Big Sky Conference program. An experienced collegiate track and field coach with a diverse coaching background, Galbraith came to UND after a highly successful seven-year tenure as head men’s and women’s track and field coach at the University of Northern Colorado, where he guided the Bears through their transition from Division II to Division I and into the Big Sky Conference. During his time at UNC, Galbraith’s student-athletes set 15 school records and added 68 marks to the program’s men’s and women’s top-10 lists. “Coach Galbraith brings a unique vantage point to our track and field program, having led a program through the transition from Division II to Division I and leading that same program into our future conference home, the Big Sky,” said UND Athletics Director Brian Faison at the time of Galbraith’s hiring. “Kevin’s coaching resume is outstanding.” During Galbraith’s tenure, UNC boasted several significant milestones, including its first NCAA Division I qualifiers in school history (all sports), the first NCAA national championship female qualifier in school history, and the first Big Sky individual champions (all sports) in school history. Galbraith also developed a comprehensive training and strength development plan for Amr Seoud, a Beijing Olympic qualifier. Seoud trained with the Bears in 2010 and went on to set two Egyptian national records and win the Gold medal in the 200 meters at the 2010 African Championships. “I’m looking forward to leading the (program) through the final year of the transition and, after next year, into the Big Sky Conference,” said Galbraith. “I’m very excited to partner with (cross country) Coach (Dick) Clay to build the best possible program we can.” In addition to Clay, Galbraith rounded out his coaching staff with the hirings of assistants Peter Miller and Joe Silvers.

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON REVIEW

Fighting Sioux

2011-12 und TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY Bemidji State. Freshman Tate Messmer (Ortonville, Minn.) will also be in the mix.

DISTANCE/MID-DISTANCE Senior Tyler Rose (Brainerd, Minn.) leads this group after earning All-GWC Cross Country honors in the fall. He scored in both the 1,500meters and the 5K at last year’s GWC Outdoor Championship. Rose and fellow senior Adam Stainiger (Chisholm, Minn.), who redshirted the cross country season, are the only two upperclassmen in the group.

Brandon Quesenberry was the GWC shot put champion in 2009 and the runner-up in 2010.

A new era of North Dakota track and field begins in 2011-12 under the direction of firstyear head coach Kevin Galbraith.

Galbraith comes to UND after a highly successful seven-year run as head coach at Northern Colorado, where he guided the Bears through their transition from Division II to Division. He’ll be asked to do the same in Grand Forks, where the Fighting Sioux will depart the Great West Conference for the Big Sky Conference following the 2011-12 season. Galbraith inherits a roster that is hardly devoid of talent, and is one that includes four seniors and four juniors, as well as a litany of sophomores and freshmen around which to build moving forward.

The sophomore class includes Jerrod Braam (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), James Dean (Brianerd, Minn.), Kyle Economy (Victoria, Minn.), Dwight Mandimika (Harare, Zimbabwe), Ross Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.), Jesse Fenstermacher (Hibbing, Minn.) and Chris Knutson (Brainerd, Minn.).

Sophomore Jordan Fisk is expected to be a key contributor in 2011-12.

The freshmen joining the mix are Mark Harries (Plymouth, Minn.), Nick Lindstrom (Sha- JUMPS/HURDLES kopee, Minn.) and Nate Peterson (Horace, Junior Bryant Halvorson (Rugby, N.D.) boasts the most experience, having been an impact N.D.). performer since arriving as a freshman. THROWS The throwers were a team strength last season and will undoubtedly lead the way again in 2011-12. Senior Brandon Quesenberry (Billings, Mont.) is a former GWC champion and last season was the conference runner-up in both the indoor and outdoor shot put. Sophomores Shawn Johnson (Eveleth, Minn.) and Roman Waldera (Minot, N.D.) emerged as key talents as freshmen, and both will be counted upon to continue their progression this year. Two other sophomores join the squad this year: Alex Hickel (Grand Forks, N.D.) comes over from the Sioux football team, while Jakob Bissell (Plymouth, Minn.) should be an immediate contributor after transfering from

Senior Chris Stoks returns as UND’s most experienced and accomplished sprinter.

2011-12 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY

Ed Grom GWC Commissioner

The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate institutions that range geographically from New Jersey to Texas to California. The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giving each school added exposure - both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions’ substantial alumni base.

The conference, which began as a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members.

UND President Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.

Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008. These seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league. In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf. Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin league play in 2009-10. As the conference began planning for multi-team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field. Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions. The associate members, plus NJIT, make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley play in the West. Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined great west conference Administration as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing members. Seattle University was added as an associate member in Ed Grom, Commissioner cross country and track and field in 2009. P.O. Box 9344 Naperville, IL 60567 Officially announced Feb. 25, 2004, charter members of the Great West P: (630) 428-4492 Football Conference were California Polytechnic State University; UniF: (630) 548-0705 versity of California, Davis; North Dakota State University; University E-mail: grom@gwconference.org of Northern Colorado; South Dakota State University; and Southern Utah University. E-mail: sharpe@gwconference.org The Great West continues its proud tradition in football and has been Jacque Cottrell, Director of Media Relations rated as one of the best in Football Championship Subdivision and P: (713) 305-8614 ahead of Football Bowl Subdivision leagues such as the Mid-American E-mail: cottrell@gwconference.org Conference and the Sun Belt. The Great West Conference recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include players of the week; all-conference teams; an academic all-conference team; and player, newcomer and coach of the year awards. The league also crowns team champions for both regular season and post-season competition. The governance of the Great West Conference remains primarily with the member institutions. Each member institution is represented on the President’s Council by its respective CEO. The general operations and management of the Conference will be conducted by the directors of athletics and senior woman administrators (Joint Council). Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media relations functions remain with member institutions.

2011-12 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY By Jackie DeMolee, UND Athletics

Ron Pynn was an educator at the University of North Dakota

for 29 years in political science, but he didn’t only shape the minds of students in the classroom. He has projected his love for track and field and cross country onto the programs at UND. Pynn has been a long time supporter of cross country and track and field. The Ron Pynn Invitational, UND’s annual cross country meet, was established in 2002 to honor Pynn for his many contributions to the teams, including travelling with the teams for support, working events and financially supporting the program. He said that he’s always had a passion for the sport and the studentathletes involved.

“It [running] takes a special brand of discipline,” said Pynn. “What drives them [athletes] to run drives them to succeed in other areas of their life.” This is only one of the many reasons Pynn feels so passionate about the program at UND. “It’s been exciting each and every year,” said longtime UND men’s cross country and track and field head coach Mike Grandall, who retired following the 2009-10 season. “It’s great to have him back.” Pynn uses the Invitational as an opportunity to visit the University and friends. “I think the world of the coaches,” he said. “The way they treat the athletes, but not just as UND athletes, but as students too.” Pynn currently resides in Burlington, Vt., but makes the trek back to UND each year for the Invitational.

UND RON PYNN INVITATIONAL

Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the Ron Pynn Invitational. The course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest. The Division I transition has changed the Invitational somewhat, but it doesn’t change the meaning behind the name of the event or how important the event is to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and Pynn.
