Societies are a fantastic way to meet new people, make friends or experience new activities, many will even complement your academic studies, giving skills and qualifications that will benefit you long after you’ve finished your time here!
There is a Society for every hobby, interest and academic school. If you’ve got a passion for something then you can meet a group of people that share your passion! Our hobby societies vary all the way from our Assassin’s Society though to our Writers League, which give you the opportunity to try something new or learn a new skill. Our Academic societies will allow you to further your academic studies and make connections that you’d never thought imaginable. If you have a cause you that you feel strongly about, you can help liberate that group, such as with our LGBT+ society or Street Law, which will help you educate people around you. If you’ve got an idea for a society then all you need to do is find 10 likeminded people that want to be involved, and drop an e-mail to societies@undebbangor. com to get the ball rolling! Oh and the other bonus is, wait for it, They’re all FREE to join! We’re one of a few students’ unions in the UK where that’s the case and it allows for all students and community members to join in on as many activities as possible and stops any barriers to your experience.

Y Llef is Bangor’s Welsh language student newspaper, printed once a semester. Like seren, they are run by students and report on all things Bangor and beyond. So if you’re interested in written media, and have a keen interest in the Welsh language then this is the society for you!

UMCB, Bangor Welsh Students’ Union, is the Union that works in partnership with the Undeb Bangor to represent and look after the welfare of Welsh students, Welsh learners and anyone interested in Welsh language and culture during your time here at Bangor. We have a wide variety of activities to enjoy throughout the year to make sure you make the most of your time here. Over the next year I will ensure that you are not disadvantaged whilst studying through the medium of Welsh by reviewing the translation process and the language of your exams. If you have any problems with your course or the services in Welsh here at Bangor, come and see me and I shall do my best to help or direct you to someone who can. It looks to be a great year with a full timetable of events. From the Inter-Collegiate Dance and Eisteddfod, to the Welsh Week to the annual rugby trip. STUDENT VOICE REPRESENTATION
Undeb Bangor is YOUR Students’ Union. We’re here so you can shape your Union, and be the driving force behind the changes and improvements you want to see.
www.undebbangor.com/studentvoice
UNDEB BANGOR COUNCIL Undeb Bangor Council is a representative body of our student population. It meets regularly to make sure that the Sabbatical Officers are fulfilling their roles effectively, to debate ideas and issues and create new projects and areas of work. You can get involved in Undeb Bangor Council by talking to students on Undeb Bangor Council, by submitting an idea for Undeb Bangor Council to discuss or by coming along to the meetings!
GENERAL MEETINGS We have two General Meetings a year, one at the beginning and one at the end. The GMs exist to give all of you an opportunity to question your Officers, find out what progress your Union is making and set budgets for the year ahead. This is also a chance for you to suggest new projects and ideas for the Undeb to work on.
TRUSTEE BOARD Undeb is a charity that works on your behalf. Legally we have to have a Trustee Board to oversee our activities, making sure that we work hard for students, whilst, of course, ensuring that it’s all above board and legal. In addition to the Sabbatical Officers, we have 3 elected voluntary student trustees. You can find out more online.
ELECTIONS The Undeb is led by students, for students. It’s how we make sure we’re fresh, vibrant, fun, and rooted in your experience. Democracy is at the heart of everything we do, and you’ll get the chance to elect students to run your club or society, to be your Course Representative, to sit on Undeb Bangor Council to debate ideas and issues, and to work as Sabbatical Officers. You have the power to choose who represents you. Or, if you’ve got drive, enthusiasm and ideas you can always stand in the elections yourself!
IDEAS Have you got a bright Idea?
If you’ve got a great idea to improve Bangor, it’s really easy to make the change! All you need to do is head to www.undebbangor.com and head to the ideas section. Anyone can submit an Idea, and the idea will be discussed at Undeb Bangor Council (UBC) and then, if passed, becomes Undeb policy. The Undeb Officers will work with you to implement your Idea! That’s you influencing the experience of those around you!
ANNUAL STATEMENT
At Undeb Bangor we believe that students should be in the driving seat of their academic experience. We’re also very proud of our Student Voice team and Course Representative System.
The Annual Student Statement is one of our pieces of work that we are most proud of.
Our Student Voice team focuses on students’ academic experience, and is where you can go if you have any academic related problems or need to make an academic appeal. The Student Voice Team is also home to the Student-Led Teaching Awards – a project which gives you the opportunity to have a say about your teaching and learning experiences, by giving you the chance to nominate staff in your department for one of our awards. Look out for more information about this during Semester 1! Want to know more e-mail us at studentvoice@undebbangor.com The Course Rep System, is where all of your feedback is heard and used to continually monitor and improve your academic experience. This helps to resolve problems with your course, providing you with opportunities to comment and reflect on your experiences and by working with you, together we can change issues that matter the most. The system is led by your Reps while working in partnership with your School, your College and everyone here at Undeb so that your opinions are at the centre of every decision made which affect your studies. Course Reps are elected in the first few weeks of Semester 1, and any student can stand to be one. If you’d like to be at the forefront of decisions affecting your education, e-mail coursereps@undebbangor.com to find out how you can get involved!
You can read our Statement over on our website, but put simply, it’s a report entirely based on what you tell us about your academic experience. From books on shelves, to computer labs, feedback on your work and module choices your voice is at the forefront of change. We even look at employability and reducing barriers to accessing education. Working in partnership with the University, we implement recommendations on how you can improve your experience by shaping how you’re taught, how you progress, all the way to how you want your academic experience to look and feel. It’s your education, and we believe that you’re the experts, so it should be us as students informing decisions.
HERE’S WHAT WE WANT TO DO FOR YOU: Enhance the postgraduate experience. Increase support for careleavers and student parents. Facilitate the development of ‘Academic Societies’ Enhance the experience of part-time, mature and home students. Reduce ‘hidden’ course costs associated with your degree, such as printing and graduation.

STUDENT LIFE
Student Life at Bangor is great but we can also face difficult times when we’re away from home at university. This is why Undeb Bangor works closely with Student Support Services at Rathbone to make sure your time at Bangor is as awesome as it can be. Connect@Bangor and our Walk and Talk volunteering projects will be available to all students as well, making sure that you have the support you need to make the most of your time at Bangor. All bases covered.
YOUR HOUSING
We work closely with the housing office to ensure that you get good quality housing through the university. The student housing list will be released in September. Look out for our housing campaigns and keep an eye on bangorstudentpad.co.uk/students!

YOUR NEW
COMMUNITY
Bangor University has been at the heart of Bangor’s Community since it first opened its doors to students in 1884.
Bangor is one of the smallest cities within Britain. It has a population of approximately 19,000 - of which over half are students. Students make Bangor their home when they’re here and we aim to strengthen the relationship between the Students and the community.
THIS IS YOUR NEW COMMUNITY. GET INVOLVED AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! RUTH PLANT
VOLUNTEERING
WASTE
Our volunteering projects greatly benefit the students and our local community. Our projects work with everyone from school children to the elderly and everything in between. Go to undebbangor.com/ volunteering or come to Undeb Bangor to find out more!
We love Bangor and we like to take care of the city and it’s inhabitants. We regularly work with the council to ensure that the streets are kept clean. You can check when your rubbish is collected on the gwynedd.gov.uk website
UNIVERSITY PARKING If you’re planning on bringing a car to Bangor you can buy a parking permit . However, parking spaces are limited and we strongly recommend you consider whether or not you need a car in Bangor. Remember - Most places are within walking distance!
FIND OUT MORE We have created a local community guide to keep you informed with how you can help the local area grow and expand and how you can get involved!
