INTRODUCTION It’s great you’re interested in becoming an Undeb Bangor Councillor and joining us in discussing and debating students’ ideas as well as helping to create and work on new projects and initiatives throughout the year. We can’t wait to work with you to Make Change Happen and ensure that Undeb Bangor is relevant to our student body. We’ve put this booklet together as a short guide to Undeb Bangor Council and how student ideas work. It’ll provide you with lots of useful information, but if you have any questions just get in touch. We look forward to seeing you in and around the Union.

WHAT IS UNDEB BANGOR COUNCIL (UBC)? Undeb Bangor Council (UBC), is a forum which meets on a monthly basis throughout the academic year to discuss, debate and pass ideas which have been submitted by students and/or brought by the Sabbatical Officer team. These ideas should be geared toward making students’ lives better and the development and improvement of the student experience. They can be anything from creating new projects and initiatives to policies which contribute to Undeb Bangor’s strategic and future direction. This allows Undeb Bangor to work on ideas that students want to see and that are relevant to the student body. In addition, UBC also allows students to hold Sabbatical Officers to account on the work that they do.

UNDEB BANGOR COUNCIL EXISTS TO: 1.1.1. DISCUSS, DEBATE, AND SET UNION POLICY IN BETWEEN GENERAL MEETINGS. 1.1.2. REVIEW, GUIDE, HOLD TO ACCOUNT, AND CREATE PROJECTS FOR THE OFFICER TRUSTEES IN BETWEEN GENERAL MEETINGS. 1.1.3. DISCUSS ISSUES OF RELEVANCE TO THE STUDENTS IN BETWEEN GENERAL MEETINGS. 1.1.4. WHAT IS AN UNDEB BANGOR COUNCILLOR? Undeb Bangor Councillors are elected by their peers to sit on Undeb Bangor Council (UBC) and represent their fellow students’ views. They get to discuss, debate and vote on the ideas and policies that come to UBC. This allows them to have a say on the projects and initiatives Undeb works on throughout the year, as well as stances on things that matter to the student body.
WHO CAN BECOME AN UNDEB BANGOR COUNCILLOR? Any student has the opportunity to become an Undeb Bangor Councillor. All you need to do is nominate yourself online within the nomination period and then get students to vote for you when the time comes. Information on this year’s nominations and voting process can be seen on page here.
HOW MUCH TIME WILL I HAVE TO COMMIT? If you become an Undeb Bangor Councillor there are some important things that you must do and after that it’s up to you how much time you spend on it.
THE ROLE OF AN UNDEB BANGOR COUNCILLOR Undeb Bangor Councillors should; • Represent Students to ensure that all students opinions are represented and valued • Talk to students about their experiences • Encourage and help students to submit ideas to direct the work of Undeb Bangor • Use their knowledge and experiences to help make Undeb Bangor, the University or the community better for Students.
• Attend Undeb Bangor Council
• Feedback to Students on the work of Undeb Bangor – they are part of the vital link between Undeb and the Student Body
• Attend Undeb Bangor Council Training
• Listen to others
• Speak to your fellow students regularly to get their opinions
• Be able to take other people’s opinions on board
• Listen to students
• Work with other Undeb Bangor Councillors and the Sabbatical Officer team on projects and initiatives to make sure progress is made on ideas, policies and important issues.
As an Undeb Bangor Councillor you must;

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? There are loads of reasons to become an Undeb Bangor Councillor. Here’s our top picks of what’s in it for you. • A chance to develop loads of skills and qualities including; communication, organisation, leadership, negotiation, presentation, initiative, self-confidence, teamwork, planning and many more. • The opportunity to get further involved in working with Undeb Bangor and the University. Some students use this is as a stepping stone to running to be a Sabbatical Officer. • Have a direct say in the future improvement of Undeb and the University. • Meet loads of new people • Get points towards your HEAR and Bangor Employability Award • Gain valuable volunteering experience
MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN SUBMITTING YOUR IDEAS TO GETTING YOUR IDEAS MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN WORKED ON. Submitting Your Ideas is linked closely to Undeb Bangor Council Your Ideas is all about letting us know what you’re passionate about and what changes you want in your University and Union. Any student can submit, upvote or down vote an idea to direct the work of Undeb Bangor. If you have an idea about how to make Undeb Bangor, the University or the community better for students, then you can submit an idea online at www.undebbangor.com/ yourideas .

Once you’ve submitted your idea you need to get students’ support behind it, so make sure you share it with your peers, pop it on social media etc. If students like ideas, they can upvote them. The top 5 highest ranked ideas will go to the next Undeb Bangor Council (UBC), meeting and the proposers will be invited along to speak about them. The ideas are then debated and UBC decides whether to take them forward and if they should become Undeb Bangor policy.
