a letter of welcome Dear Friends of the United Nations Foundation, The great challenges of the 21st century – poverty, climate change, energy access, population pressure, gender equity, and disease – are global in nature, overwhelming the capabilities and resources of any one nation or sector. The United Nations is the only institution with the international scale, reach, and capacity to address these “problems without passports.” Since 1998, the role of the United Nations Foundation has evolved from a traditional grantmaker to an actively involved problem solver. Within the framework of more than 10 specific issue campaigns, we continue to work closely with the UN to develop large-scale partnerships, build expert coalitions, and advocate for a strong, effective UN. Our campaigns are entry points for individuals and groups to become engaged in the life-saving work of the UN. Through the advocacy and fundraising activities of our campaigns, the UN Foundation and our partners have helped the UN to keep girls in school; prevent child marriage; increase access to reproductive health education, services, and supplies; provide families with clean and affordable energy solutions; cut measles deaths by 85 percent in Africa; distribute more than 6 million anti-malaria bed nets to 25 African countries; slash the geographic range of polio from 30 to now only 3 countries and reduce polio incidence by 99 percent worldwide; and successfully champion the payment of close to $2 billion in United States debt to the UN. We have reached out to many new UN allies, working with partners as diverse as the National Basketball Association, the United Methodist Church, the government of Norway, the American Red Cross, ExxonMobil, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We have paid great attention to recruiting

individuals like you, people who are willing to learn about and take action on problems beyond your backyard. Beyond organizations and governments, some of our most influential partners and supporters are moms, adolescent girls, and emerging entrepreneurs and innovators who personify both the global citizen and the deeply involved philanthropist of the future. From vaccinating the 1 billionth child against measles to delivering bed nets that prevent malaria, from sheltering victims of earthquakes, floods, and storms to stimulating a market for clean cookstoves that are safe and healthy for families and the environment – these are just some of the ways the UN Foundation empowers people to create a healthier and happier world. This is about more than raising money. This is about reaching new audiences to ask them to give and advocate, and creating linkages among sometimes unlikely partners that bring new energy to bear on old problems. And ultimately, this is about multiplying results and producing long-lasting, sustainable change. Almost everyone we meet wants to help their families and communities reach their potential. our relationship with the United Nations We help tell the UN’s story, build support for the UN’s global programs, and advocate for a strong U.S.-UN relationship. We work closely with the UN Secretary-General, UN agencies, the UN Fund for International Partnerships, the UN Office of Partnerships, and other stakeholders to support the UN’s work. This includes working together on UN global efforts such as Sustainable Energy for All to make energy more accessible, more efficient, and cleaner by 2030, and Every Woman Every Child to mobilize and intensify global action to improve women’s and children’s health. Addressing the needs and rights of women and girls is essential to alleviating poverty, achieving social justice, stabilizing the world’s population, and accelerating progress on global development goals. The UN Foundation believes that empowering women and girls with educational and economic opportunities and securing their health and human rights is one of the best investments we can make for families, communities, and the world. We work with the UN, and NGO, corporate, and government partners to promote gender equality; address the unmet need for quality reproductive health and voluntary family planning services; advocate for increased resources and funding for programs and activities benefiting adolescent girls; eliminate gender-based violence; and improve maternal health care using integrated health systems and mobile technologies. stories of impact It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the scope and scale of today’s challenges, but as the stories on these pages make clear, global progress is possible. Here are a few highlights.

Polio Eradication: Success is Within Reach In early 2012, the fight against polio reached a milestone – India celebrated a full year without a single new case and was removed from the polio endemic list, leaving only three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. With our partners, we have been dedicated to the fight, facilitating $200 million to help reduce polio worldwide by 99 percent. 14

Measles: 1 Billionth Vaccination Confirms Partnerships Work

Igniting Change: Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

In 2011, the Measles & Rubella Initiative helped vaccinate the 1 billionth child against measles. Working since 2001 in more than 60 countries, the initiative has cut measles deaths by 85 percent in Africa and 74 percent worldwide. Before widespread vaccination, measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year.

Three billion people use polluting, inefficient stoves to cook, and the resulting toxic smoke kills almost 2 million people a year. Since its 2010 launch, the Alliance has secured an unprecedented $100 million in funding and recruited more than 270 partners across six continents to reach the goal of 100 million homes adopting clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.


Every Woman Every Child: Unprecedented Action for Global Health Launched in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Every Woman Every Child mobilizes and intensifies global action to improve women’s and children’s health. The UN Foundation has committed $400 million through campaigns and partnerships over five years to support this essential effort which aims to save 16 million women and children by 2015.

Sustainable Energy For All: Powering the Future Recognizing that sustainable development is impossible without sustainable energy, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is leading Sustainable Energy for All, calling on all sectors of society to make energy more accessible, more efficient, and cleaner by 2030. We are providing support to raise global awareness and engage stakeholders worldwide to create the future we want.

Universal Access Project: Strengthening Women, Families, and Communities Approximately 222 million women around the world want but don’t have access to family planning services. Since 2008, we have spearheaded a collaborative effort of leading foundations to strengthen the U.S. government’s role in advancing reproductive health and rights globally by leveraging close to $12 million to support 25 NGOs.

mHealth Alliance: Big Numbers with Big Potential The mHealth Alliance, founded in 2009 and hosted by the UN Foundation, champions the use of mobile technologies to improve health throughout the world. The Alliance serves as a convener for the mHealth community to overcome common challenges by sharing tools, knowledge, experience, and lessons learned. With 7 billion people in the world, 5.9 billion mobile phone subscriptions, and one physician for 50,000 people in places like Malawi and Niger, the potential for positive change is exponential.

Because changing the future starts with a girl, we created Girl Up – a way for American girls to help girls in developing countries. Since 2010, more than 230,000 Girl Up supporters have channeled their energy and compassion — spreading the word through social media networks, contacting representatives in Washington, D.C., and donating money to UN programs that are making a difference for girls.

Since its launch in September 2011, more than 100,000 people have joined Shot@Life to contribute financial support and engage in advocacy activities to promote vaccines around the world. Together, we can save children’s lives by expanding access to vaccines. Every child deserves a shot at a healthy life.

With the help of our supporters, Nothing But Nets and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have delivered more than 1 million life-saving bed nets to protect refugees from malaria. Even more importantly, we’re seeing incredible progress against this deadly, preventable disease. Since 2008, malaria has dropped from the number one killer of refugees to the number five cause of death, thanks in part to our partnership with UNHCR. 17

The ExxonMobil Foundation has been a strong advocate and leader in the fight against malaria, and in increasing economic opportunities for women. To build on its success in the field, the Foundation partnered with the Nothing But Nets campaign over the last several years - contributing to the distribution of more than 6 million life-saving bed nets. In 2012, the ExxonMobil Foundation launched an exciting new research collaboration with the UN Foundation to identify the most effective program interventions to promote economic opportunities for women worldwide. ExxonMobil was honored at our 2011 Global Leadership Dinner for its commitment to ending malaria deaths by 2015.

In 2011, ABC News and the UN Foundation launched the Million Moms Challenge, an initiative to connect American moms with moms around the globe to improve maternal and child health worldwide. Through broadcast specials, including a Diane Sawyer 20/20 Special Report, online articles, and social media, the Million Moms Challenge has reached tens of millions of people and continues to raise awareness and funds to help mothers and babies everywhere survive and thrive.

Building on the success of the annual Social Good Summit started in 2010, the UN Foundation partnered with Mashable, the top online source for news in digital and social media, 92nd Street Y, and a unique group of influencial partners to host a similar dynamic discussion – Rio+Social – during the historic UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20. The event trended globally on Twitter and catalyzed a global, online conversation to share solutions for pressing global challenges.

Variety

American Academy of Pediatrics

CLEAN & CLEAR®, a brand owned by Johnson & Johnson, has used its vast network of partners, including MTV and Target, to raise awareness about Girl Up and to inspire action. Through our partnership, 20 girls were selected to be members of the inaugural HERo class, with one girl winning a trip to New York City for a mini-mentorship with Seventeen and Cosmopolitan, and a day at the UN. CLEAN & CLEAR® also offered mini-grants to Girl Up clubs across the U.S. for awareness and fundraising activities, funded scholarships for girls to attend the first Girl Up Leadership Summit, and helped launch a toolkit for teens to start a Girl Up club.

Variety has helped the UN Foundation and the UN reach over 60,000 readers with an innovative partnership to engage the creative community, including groundbreaking advertisements in numerous issues. On April 25, 2012, World Malaria Day, Variety raised awareness for malaria prevention in a first-of-its-kind way – Variety’s website and print issue were wrapped to resemble a life-saving bed net. In recognition of its leadership to activate the creative community in solving global problems, Variety was named an honoree for our 2012 Global Leadership Award.

As a founding partner of Shot@Life, the American Academy of Pediatrics is mobilizing pediatric leaders and its membership of 60,000 to provide technical health information to the campaign and to accelerate vaccine access goals. Through Shot@Life, pediatricians have the opportunity to talk to the public and the U.S. government about the critical role of vaccines in saving and improving the lives of children around the world. A pilot program, expanding from 30 offices, educates Americans about global vaccines at a critical moment—while in the pediatrician’s office getting their child’s recommended vaccines.

Social Good Summit: New Power, New Players, New Platforms

Think Global, Act Mobile: New App Puts Change in Your Hands

Launched in 2010 with Mashable and the 92nd Street Y, this event, dubbed the “Digital Davos,” brings the high-level discussions of the UN General Assembly each September beyond the walls of the UN headquarters and into the blogging community and the public conversation – where digital media delivers it to the world.

In September 2011, the UN Foundation teamed up with the UN, Stevie Wonder, and Monique Coleman to launch a free, first-of-its-kind mobile and tablet application for people everywhere to connect with the UN. Available in all six of the UN’s official languages, the app delivers news from multiple UN sources in one integrated realtime stream, and makes it easy, for example, to donate $10 for an anti-malaria bed net to save lives in Africa, thank a UN peacekeeper, advocate for a better world, share facts about girls’ lives in the developing world, and even play “Pieces of Peace,” an interactive game that challenges users to unscramble photos that chronicle UN-related work. In 2011, more than 1,600 people attended the event, which included Nobel Prize Laureates, government and business leaders, activists, movie stars, bloggers, and journalists. More than 100,000 have watched the Livestream proceedings, totaling more than 1 million minutes of footage, and over 100,000 tweets using #socialgood have been posted including those of several African First Ladies, who created their first-ever Twitter accounts to support UN efforts on global health.


Sharing the message: Ads in Taxis, Airports, Malls, and Times Square As part of our work with Global Entrepreneurs Council, the UN Foundation, with Posterscope USA, the world’s leading out-of-home communications agency, and 18 of its media partners, is leveraging the power of digital advertising to engage Americans in helping the UN solve global problems. A recent six-month campaign representing $2.5 million in donated advertising space garnered more than 1 billion impressions across almost 300 cities. Call to action messages — combat malaria, help Haiti rebuild, fight poverty, support adolescent girls, and more — blanketed the nation, appearing in malls, universities, taxis, train stations, airports, digital billboards, static wallscapes, and even a sky high, digital Times Square spectacular. This innovative public awareness partnership hit home the message that we all have a role to play and made participation easy with “text-to-donate” campaigns.

Global Classrooms Model UN: Engaging the World’s Youth as Global Leaders Global Classrooms® is the cornerstone of UNA-USA’s educational program. Annually, Global Classrooms engages more than 25,000 students and teachers at Model UN conferences and in classrooms around the world. Each year thousands of middle and high school students convene for the Global Classrooms International Model UN Conference at UN Headquarters in New York City. At the 2012 Conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed more than 2,400 students at the Opening Ceremonies, where he focused youth attention on Rio+20 and asked attendees to show their support for UN Peacekeeping through the Better World Campaign’s “Thank a Peacekeeper” campaign. Model UN has been the premier vehicle for building young people’s leadership skills and understanding of international affairs, world cultures, and the workings of the UN for more than 60 years. By stepping into the shoes of UN ambassadors and representing viewpoints of 193 UN member states, young people gain awareness of ideas and trends that deeply affect their generation.

Faith Leaders: Faith leaders like United Methodist Bishop Thomas Bickerton are significant partners in the drive for global development by catalyzing change in their communities to support UN Foundation campaigns that include advancing women’s reproductive health and ending malaria. The UN Foundation has been proud to partner with the United Methodist Church in its Imagine No Malaria campaign, as well as the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and Lutheran World Relief in their Lutheran Malaria Initiative, which will result in millions of dollars for the Global Fund to help end malaria deaths.

UN Leaders: We work closely with UN leaders like Executive Director of UN Women Michelle Bachelet. In 2011, Bachelet traveled to Liberia to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day with President of Liberia Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, Africa’s first female head of state, and the next generation of women leaders: adolescent girls.

David Cook: The Season 7 AMERICAN IDOL winner and a champion for the UN Foundation and Girl Up donated a free download of his hit single, “We Believe,” to Girl Up supporters. The single was inspired by his trip to Ethiopia and the challenges facing adolescent girls there.

Global Entrepreneurs Council: This select group of some of the brightest entrepreneurs under 40 is helping the UN and the UN Foundation to engage a new generation of global citizens and bring fresh perspectives to pressing issues that demand innovative solutions.
