CHARGER BASEBALL HISTORY

Compiling a complete history of University of New Haven Baseball would take far more than one page, and the countless stories could go on and on, so we’ll call this a “Brief History” of Charger Baseball.

The University of New Haven has one of the most storied baseball programs in the history of NCAA Division II. Ask any fan of UNH Baseball, or really any fan of a team in the Northeast, and they’ll tell you that a discussion of Charger Baseball begins and ends with one man - legendary former head coach Frank “Porky” Vieira. Vieira is the true “father” of the UNH Baseball program, and until the 2007 season, the only coach the school had ever known. He founded the program in 1963. Under Vieira, who retired following the 2006 season, the UNH baseball program posted an all-time record of 1,127-324-6 in 44 seasons. That included a string of 42 straight winning seasons from 1963 to 2004, and 43 winning seasons overall. No matter how you break down the numbers, Vieira is one of the all-time greatest in the college game. At the start of the 2015 season, he was second all-time among Division II coaches with a career winning percentage of .776, and fourth among D-II coaches in total victories. “Coach V” also ranks eighth on the all-time, all-division coaching records list in terms of winning percentage and 38th in total wins. He is one of only 39 coaches to ever win at least 1,100 games at any division of college baseball.

Coach Vieira is the first one to tell you that a great coach can’t do anything without great players - and UNH has certainly had its share. UNH has produced over 80 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 10 players who made it to Major League Baseball.

Notably, UNH is one of only 14 schools to have produced a player that would later go on to win the Major League Baseball Cy Young Award. Former Charger great Steve Bedrosian went on to earn the NL Cy Young award while a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1987, saving 40 of the team’s 80 wins that season. Cameron Drew was the program’s first-ever First Round Draft Pick with his selection in 1985. Dave Wallace has been a respected professional coach since 1981, and won a World Series as pitching and was named Coach of the Year numerous coach with the Boston Red Sox in 2004. Vieira’s achievements have not gone unrecognized by the media or his peers. Featured in several publications including Sports Illustrated, he received the “Gold Key” from the Connecticut Sports Writers Association

Over 250 people, including 45 former players and coaches, turned out on December 8, 2006 to help send Coach Vieira off into retirement with a “Toast & Roast” Celebration.

The Home of Charger Baseball, Frank Vieira Field is named after the program’s first coach - and founder - of the UNH Baseball program. Located at the North Campus Athletic Complex, overlooking the city of New Haven, Vieira Field provides plenty of seating for fans along first base, as well as team dugouts, bullpens, and press box facilities behind home plate. The field is located between Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium and the University’s softball field. The residential neighborhood venue provides a comfortable setting for families to enjoy the highly successful UNH program, and the field is a convenient walking distance to the main campus.

The University of New Haven has embarked on a major field renovation campaign. Vieira Field already had new sunken concrete dugouts with double-tier benches constructed prior to the 2013 season and its entire infield playing surface replaced prior to the 2008 season. Additionally, the fencing around Vieira Field was upgraded with new windscreens in 2012. With help from alumni and friends of the program, the renovations hope to continue at Vieira Field. A top-notch facility will help recruit strong student-athletes, showcase our past successes and achieve new ones. Included in the renovations: a new scoreboard, 200 stadium seats, additional spectator seating, padded wall bearing the Charger logo behind home plate. Interested in becoming a supporter? Prior to his stint as head coach, Celano served three seasons as an assistant coach at Dowling from 2001-03. The Setauket, N.Y. native also served as the college’s Director of Sports Information from 2003-04.

HISTORY & RECORDS

In his first season as the Chargers’ skipper, Celano led New Haven to a 25-19-1 record. The spring of 2012 included the club’s fourth consecutive trip to the Northeast-10 Championship – highlighted by a First Round road win at Pace, the NE-10 Southwest Division champion. The triumph was New Haven’s first postseason victory since 2009.

During his seven seasons as head coach, the Golden Lions recorded 20 or more wins six times. In 2006, Celano led Dowling to 22 victories in its final 25 games to advance to the NCAA postseason. He also coached three student-athletes that were selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft, three All-America and 31 all-conference honorees during his tenure.

2014 REVIEW

Also the pitching coach for the Chargers, Celano mentored All-Region honorees Pat Simone and Peter Jay in 2013. Simone, who was also a First Team All-NE-10 honoree, ranked second in the nation and led the NE-10 with a WHIP of 0.81 while Jay broke the New Haven single-season record with 14 saves in addition to a 0.26 earned run average – ceding just one earned run in 34.1 innings of work.

Before helming the dugout at Vieira Field, Celano completed seven years as head coach at Dowling College, where he led the Golden Lions to six postseason appearances – including four trips to the NCAA Division II Championship. The skipper guided Dowling to its first NCAA Division II World Series and was named the Division II National Coach of the Year in 2009, a season that also marked the Golden Lions’ first NCAA East Region Championship a program-record 35 wins. Also the ABCA East Region Coach of the Year in 2009, Celano earned his first Coach of the Year honor in 2008 from the East Coast Conference.

2015 OUTLOOK

In 2013, Celano led New Haven to a 34-16 record and its first-ever Northeast-10 Championship in five seasons as a member of the prestigious conference. Also the co-champions of the NE10 Southwest Division, the Chargers went on to earn the No. 3 seed at the NCAA East Region Championship. New Haven recorded its first NCAA postseason win since 2003 with a 3-1 victory over eventual region champion Franklin Pierce. The Chargers’ 34 wins are the third-most in program history, two shy of the 36 victories accumulated by the 1989 team that finished as a National Finalist.

Vieira spoke highly of Celano at the time of his hiring on July 22, 2011. “It was impossible to find a better match as the next head coach. By hiring Chris, the program is pointed in the direction of the World Series,” Vieira said.

2015 PLAYERS

This past spring, Celano led New Haven to a 23-13 record overall, while recording a 17-9 record in the Northeast-10 Conference and a 12-6 record in the Southwest Division. 2014 culminated in a third straight trip to the NE-10 Conference Championships that included a first round win against Le Moyne. Additionally, New Haven earned several All-Conference accolades as seven student-athletes were honored by the NE-10 for their on-field performance.

2014 PREVIEW

Coming off a 23-13 season in 2014, the University of New Haven baseball team eyes a fourth consecutive trip to the postseason this spring. The Chargers finished second in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division and hosted a first round game in the NE-10 Conference Championship last season. Fourth-year head coach Chris Celano looks to guide a New Haven squad that returns six position players and a starting pitcher from last year’s team, sees 11 letterwinners come back and adds nine newcomers.

Prep School Athletic Conference at The Gunnery after compiling a 15-1 record with a 1.09 ERA, striking out 174 batters in 99 innings. Junior Brian Caselli looks to expand on his role out of the bullpen after appearing in four contests last season. Fellow junior TJ Margiotta returns to the relief corps following an injury in 2014. Along with Croce, leading the way for the newcomers on the mound is David Palmer who was an All-State performer at East Islip High School. Also entering the fold for New Haven are freshmen Will Aldam, Tim Kennedy, Joe Caico, Colin Keyes, and Brandon Cruz. The quintet will all vie for roles in the bullpen and provide depth to the pitching staff.

New Haven will look to replace two key cogs on offense as All-Conference honorees Brendan Buckley (.3645-22, 14 SB) and Chris DeMorais (.336-1-32, 10 2B) were lost to graduation. The Chargers will look to fill the shoes of Derek Drag (3-1, 2.43), Pat Simone (4-3, 3.43) and John Melville (4-3, 3.78) on the mound. The trio accounted for over 60 percent of the team’s starts in 2014. Catcher Veteran catcher TJ Riccio returns for his third season behind the dish for the Chargers and his second as the Pitching New Haven returns one starter from last season as starter. Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

42

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and won three-straight conference championships and

made a pair of NCAA appearances. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall

of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours.
