JEN STAREK HEAD COACH

Jen Starek enters her tenth season as head coach of the Chargers’ softball program in 2016. The winningest coach in program history, Starek has been at the helm for the club’s most successful season as a part of New Haven’s first-ever string of four consecutive trips to NCAA postseason from 2008-11.

Starek took over the Chargers’ program in 2007 and led the team to a 26-19 record – an eight-win improvement from the previous campaign. Prior to her arrival at New Haven, Starek spent two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games, to improve upon a 17-22 mark from 2005. She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16U Team during 2005 and 2006.

In 2011, New Haven advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship as the fourth seed and was one of three teams left standing on the tournament’s final day of action. The Chargers also claimed the seventh seed in the NCAA East Region Championship, marking the club’s fourth-straight NCAA postseason trip. After concluding the season with a 34-19 overall record, Chelsea Harold and Christina Gelardi both earned NFCA All-America honors and were two of the four Chargers to claim All-Northeast-10 recognition.

Starek was a standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield. As a catcher and outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference selection (2000, 2001), NFCA All-New England Second Team (2001), and NEISCA Division III second team All-Star (1999). The Pride won their first-ever NEWMAC Tournament in 2000, advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 30-17-1 record. The following season as a senior, Starek led Springfield to a 41-10 record, their highest win total in at least 17 years.

The 2010 campaign was a landmark season for the Chargers. Starek claimed Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding New Haven to its first NE-10 Regular Season Championship. Despite being upset at the NE-10 Championship, the Chargers’ regular season résumé merited the top seed in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. New Haven swept the competition at the regional before dropping the Super Regional to Molloy in the deciding game of a best-of-three series. The Chargers won a program-record 42 games and made the deepest NCAA postseason run in program history, finishing the spring ranked No. 16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll.

Starek led the Pride field hockey team to NEWMAC titles 1998, 1999 and 2000. They advanced to the national championship game in 2000, her final season. She is an NATA certified athletic trainer and an NSCA certified strength and conditioning coach.

The 2010 season also marked the end of arguably one of the best four-year

New Haven’s all-time wins leader on the softball diamond at 260-139 (also her Division II head coaching record), Starek is 303-201 (.601) overall in ten seasons as a collegiate head coach. Starek is a native of Holliston, Mass., and currently resides in West Haven, Conn.

THE UNIVERSITY

Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration in 2003.

HISTORY & RECORDS

The Chargers finished 29-19 in 2012 and earned the seventh seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, going on to knock off second seeded Adelphi and advance to the championship weekend tournament. Starek mentored Shannon Angehr to First Team All-NE-10 and Second Team NFCA All-East Region laurels in the outfield.

2015 REVIEW

Previously, Starek has been head softball coach, assistant athletic director and an adjunct professor of sports management at Mount Ida College (2003-04). She was an assistant softball coach at her alma mater, Springfield College, from 2001-03. In 2003, the Pride went 33-12 overall to register its second-highest win total in a 17-year span.

2016 OUTLOOK

In 2013, Starek produced the Chargers’ seventh-straight winning season – a stretch that began when she took over the program in 2007. The team finished 38-15 and reached both the Northeast-10 and NCAA Regional championship games. New Haven earned its first NFCA national ranking (No. 24) since landing at No. 21 in the 2011 preseason poll. Starek also guided the program’s first-ever NFCA All-America First Team selection, Christina Gelardi, to Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year laurels. Gelardi led the nation with a .649 on-base percentage. Pitcher Micah Stonesifer and first baseman Jess Spivey also collected All-Region accolades in 2013.

Earlier in her New Haven career, Starek guided the Chargers to the 2009 Division II East Region Championship final and an underdog run to the 2008 East Region final that included wins in four consecutive elimination games.

2016 PLAYERS

The 2014 season marked Starek’s second Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honor as the Chargers won the NE-10 Southwest Division regular-season title for the first time since divisional play began in 2013. The Chargers came one win shy of recording Starek’s second back-to-back 30-win season at 29-18 overall. With an 18-8 conference slate, New Haven hosted the conference championship, but fell to eventual champion Southern New Hampshire. The Chargers also earned the fourth seed in the NCAA East Region Championship and hosted the tournament on campus. The appearance was the sixth in a seven year stretch. Three players earned All-Region Second Team honors by Daktronics.

careers in New Haven softball history. Breanne Gleason was a two-time All-America honoree and only the second player in Northeast-10 history to earn Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season (2010). She was also the 20th NCAA Division II pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts and the 22nd to register 100 wins. Gleason was a four-time All-Region selection, a two-time First Team All-NE-10 honoree and recorded the most recent perfect game in New Haven history – a 3-0 win over Dowling on March 17, 2010.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship three times, most recently in 2015.
