CHARGER BASEBALL HISTORY Compiling a complete history of University of New Haven Baseball would take far more than one page, and the countless stories could go on and on, so we’ll call this a “Brief History” of Charger Baseball.
2017 COACHES
The University of New Haven has one of the most storied baseball programs in the history of NCAA Division II. Ask any fan of UNH Baseball, or really any fan of a team in the Northeast, and they’ll tell you that a discussion of Charger Baseball begins and ends with one man - legendary former head coach Frank “Porky” Vieira.

Vieira is the true “father” of the UNH Baseball program, and until the 2007 season, the only coach the school had ever known. He founded the program in 1963. Under Vieira, who retired following the 2006 season, the UNH baseball program posted an all-time record of 1,127-324-6 in 44 seasons. That included a string of 42 straight winning seasons from 1963 to 2004, and 43 winning seasons overall. as The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the East Coast Conference (ECC). UNH has 82 postseason wins in all, the career winning percentage of .776, and fourth fifth-most of any school in NCAA Division II among D-II coaches in total victories. “Coach history, and advanced to the College World V” also ranks eighth on the all-time, all-division Series a school-record seven consecutive coaching records list in terms of winning times from 1984 to 1990. Vieira’s achievements have not gone unrecognized by the media or his peers. Featured in several publications including Sports Illustrated, he received the “Gold Key” from the Connecticut SportsWriters Association and was named Coach of the Year numerous times for the NCAA Northeast Region as well
Coach Vieira is the first one to tell you that a great coach can’t do anything without great players - and UNH has certainly had its share. UNH has produced over 80 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 10 players who made it to Major League Baseball. Notably, UNH is one of only 14 schools to have produced a player that would later go on to win the Major League Baseball Cy Young Award. Former Charger great Steve Bedrosian went on to earn the NL Cy Young award while a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1987, saving 40 of the team’s 80 wins that season. Cameron Drew was the program’s first-ever First Round Draft Pick with his selection in 1985. Dave Wallace has been a respected professional coach since 1981, and won a World Series as pitching coach with the Boston Red Sox in 2004. This list goes on and on. Even some of those players who didn’t go on to play professionally had standout careers on the diamond for UNH. Further evidence of the Chargers’ contributions to the sport can be found in the NCAA Record Book, where you’ll see the words “New Haven” over 60 times among the various team and individual records. (For a more complete list of players in the pros, see the “History of Success” page on page 5 of this guide or visit the record book on NewHavenChargers.com.)
Over 250 people, including 45 former players and coaches, turned out on December 8, 2006 to help send Coach Vieira off into retirement with a “Toast & Roast” Celebration.

The University of New Haven has embarked on a major field renovation campaign. Vieira Field already had new sunken concrete dugouts with double-tier benches constructed prior to the 2013 season and its entire infield playing surface replaced prior to the 2008 season. Additionally, the fencing around Vieira Field was upgraded with new windscreens in 2012. Prior to the 2017 season, brand new bleachers were added along the first base line. With help from alumni and friends of the program, the renovations hope to continue at Vieira Field. A top-notch facility will help recruit strong student-athletes, showcase our past successes and achieve new ones. Included in the renovations: a new scoreboard, 200 stadium seats, additional spectator seating, padded wall bearing the Charger logo behind home plate. Interested in becoming a supporter? Just the third coach in 51 seasons of New Haven baseball, legendary head coach Frank “Porky” Vieira spoke highly of Celano at the time of his hiring on July 22, 2011. “It was impossible to find a better match as the next head coach. By hiring Chris, the program is pointed in the direction of the World Series,” Vieira said.
A 1994 graduate of Ward Melville High School, Celano received his Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from SUNY New Paltz in 1999. After a successful college career as a left-handed pitcher, he went on to play professionally in Rimini, Italy where he was a member of the 1999 Italian League Champion Rimini Pirates. Upon returning stateside, Celano signed with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the Northern League for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
HISTORY & RECORDS
Also the pitching coach for the Chargers, Celano mentored All-Region honorees Pat Simone and Peter Jay in 2013. Simone, who was also a First Team All-NE-10 honoree, ranked second in the nation and led the NE-10 with a WHIP of 0.81 while Jay broke the New Haven single-season record with 14 saves in addition to a 0.26 earned run average – ceding just one earned run in 34.1 innings of work.
Prior to his stint as head coach, Celano served three seasons as an assistant coach at Dowling from 2001-03. The Setauket, N.Y. native also served as the college’s Director of Sports Information from 2003-04.
2016 REVIEW
In 2013, Celano led New Haven to a 34-16 record and its first-ever Northeast-10 Championship in five seasons as a member of the prestigious conference. Also the co-champions of the NE-10 Southwest Division, the Chargers went on to earn the No. 3 seed at the NCAA East Region Championship. New Haven recorded its first NCAA postseason win since 2003 with a 3-1 victory over eventual region champion Franklin Pierce. The Chargers’ 34 wins are the third-most in program history, two shy of the 36 victories accumulated by the 1989 team that finished as a National Finalist.
During his seven seasons as head coach, the Golden Lions recorded 20 or more wins six times. In 2006, Celano led Dowling to 22 victories in its final 25 games to advance to the NCAA postseason. He also coached three student-athletes that were selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft, three All-America and 31 all-conference honorees during his tenure.

Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky”Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship four times, most recently in 2016.
