JEN STAREK HEAD COACH FIFTHTH SEASON AT UNH SEVENTH SEASON OVERALL RECORD AT UNH: 126-66 (.656) ALMA MATER: SPRINGFIELD, 2001 Jen Starek enters her fifth season as head coach of the Chargers’ softball program in 2011. She took over as UNH’s head coach in the summer of 2006 and led the Chargers to a 26-19 record in her first season and a school record 42 wins in 2010 as the team finished with a 42-8 mark. The 2010 campaign was yet another successful season under Starek as she led the Chargers to their first Northeast-10 Regular Season title en route to NE-10 Coach of the Year honors. New Haven fell to Adelphi and AIC in the Northeast-10 Championships but swept the NCAA Division II East Region Championships as the No. 1 seed by defeating Georgian Court, 8-0, and taking cross-town rival Southern Connecticut in two games, 5-3 and 4-2. New Haven entered the NCAA Super Regionals as the No. 1 seed as well and took the first of three games against Molloy, 6-5, but dropped the doubleheader to become eliminated from NCAA tournament action and ending the Chargers longest postseason run in program history. They finished the season ranked #16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll. For the second consecutive season, senior Breanne Gleason received All-America accolades, earning a Third Team selection. Classmate Nicole Downs also received Third Team All-America honors and both were named to the NE-10 First Team alongside teammate Chelsea Harold. Also joining the trio on the All-Conference team was freshman Christine Gelardi, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team. Gleason was named the NE-10 and East Region Pitcher and Player of the Year as well and became just the second player in NE-10 Conference history to earn both awards in a single season. Gleason and Downs’ slew of postseason awards also included a Daktronics Division II AllAmerica Second Team and Honorable Mention respectively. Prior to a stellar 2010 season, Starek guided the Chargers into the semifinals of the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference, falling to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut, and the finals of the NCAA Div. II East Region Championship. UNH fell to Georgian Court in a close, 5-3, battle to end the season. In addition to a successful season, Starek picked up her 100th career win following the second game of 2009. The Chargers gave Starek her 100th in a 1-0 win over Wayne State on their spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. on March 16. After hovering around .500 for the first half of 2008, Starek’s Chargers found their groove late in the season and made an improbable run in the NCAA tournament. UNH dropped its opening round game in the tournament to #9 C.W. Post but bounced back to win four straight games to set up
4
a rematch with C.W. Post. New Haven fell again to the first-ranked team in the region but gained valuable experience during their run. Prior to her arrival at UNH, Starek spent the previous two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games, to improve upon a 17-22 mark from 2005. She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16 & under team during 2005 and 2006. Previously, Starek has been head softball coach, assistant athletic director and adjunct professor of sports management at Mount Ida College (2003-04). She was an assistant softball coach at her alma mater Springfield College from 2001-03, and in 2003 the team went 33-12 overall, their second-highest win total in the last 17 years. “Jen brings a wealth of experience to UNH,” said UNH Director of Athletics Deborah Chin upon Starek’s hiring. “She is an experienced head coach that also has athletic training and strength & conditioning credentials, and we are very pleased to have her take over the Charger softball program.” Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration there in 2003. Starek was a standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield. As a catcher/ outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference selection (2000, 2001), NFCA All-New England Second Team (2001), and NEISCA Division III second team All-Star (1999). The Pride won their first-ever NEWMAC Tournament in 2000, advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 30-17-1 record. The following season as a senior, Starek led Springfield to a 41-10 record, their highest win total in at least 17 years. Starek led the Pride field hockey team to NEWMAC titles 1998, 1999 and 2000. They advanced to the national championship game in 2000, her final season. She is a NATA-certified athletic trainer and a NSCA certified strength & conditioning coach. Starek is a native of Holliston, Mass., and currently resides in Fairfield, Conn.

When I began looking into different colleges, my main goal was finding one that would fit my needs both in the classroom and on the playing field. My interest in the criminal justice field led me to research the University of New Haven further and I saw that it provided the academic opportunities I had been looking for. It offered interesting courses taught by highly qualified professors, along with a great reputation far beyond those of other colleges. Not sure that I would continue my softball career when I entered college, meeting the coaching staff and team members quickly made up my mind. Being a Division II school, I knew the level of competition and dedication would be very high. After seeing the passion both the coach’s and team members had for the game, I realized that I couldn’t go through my four years of college knowing that I gave up a sport that I shared an equal passion for. Playing for the team taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. Coming to UNH has been such a rewarding experience, while pursuing my studies in criminal justice as well as taking part in the softball program. UNH has set me up for the success. I know that I will be able to excel in my career path because I chose division II.

The Northeast-10 enters its 30th year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II. The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of successes – the growth from seven original schools to more than double its size 20 years later – the contention for and winning of national championships – the change in league structure from on-campus administration to a central governing location – the anticipation of, coping with and addition of modern technology - the recognition of student-athlete performances in the classroom where the real competitions are played out – all of them have been built thanks to the hard work and dedication through the years of thousands of people who have, at one time or another, called the Northeast-10 home for their athletics program or their livelihood. The NE-10 history began with the vision of a few good men and women. It was back in 1979 that a handful of athletics directors realized that the world of college athletics was changing and that they, and their programs, would have to change as well. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the NCAA began to emphasize the importance of conferences in organizing competition and determining bids to NCAA national tournaments. The NCAA required six teams to be recognized as a conference in order to award championships, and the creation of national tournaments with automatic qualifiers to league champions became a new goal towards which teams could strive.
The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced. The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Hartford joined the ECAC Division I North Atlantic Conference but was immediately replaced by Merrimack.

The “Northeast-10” name came about when Saint Michael’s and Quinnipiac joined the league in 1987 and the conference remained stable until 1995 when Springfield left for Division III. The league stayed at 10 members as Le Moyne joined the league in 1996 from the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and briefly expanded to 11 when Pace joined in 1998 from the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). Quinnipiac elevated to the Division I Northeast Conference (NEC) to again return the foundation of 10 until the last major expansion took place prior to 2001 when five new schools joined the fold. Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire University (formerly New Hampshire College), the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Southern Connecticut State University were joined by the College of Saint Rose. In 2008, Bryant University departed for Division I and the University of New Haven immediately to replace Bryant in all sports, maintaining a 15 institutions in the conference. Adelphi University, becomes the newest member of the conference this year, bringing membership to 16 full-time institutions.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of
Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.
