12 – 14 September 2014 A weekend of history, heritage and culture www.cam.ac.uk/open-cambridge
Welcome Friday 12 – Sunday 14 September 2014 Open Cambridge returns to welcome you through the doors of some of Cambridge’s most beautiful and intriguing places. This year over ninety events explore our heritage, architecture and culture and we feature everything from College gardens to the Fire Station and museums to the Mosque. The 2014 programme invites you inside Colleges, libraries, buildings and gardens that are usually closed to the public; it explores the City and University’s experience of the First World War through special exhibitions and events; and a new series of Top Talks and Top Walks celebrates some of the key figures and moments in Cambridge’s past. The programme is ordered chronologically by time and date, and shows the type of event, the appropriate age and whether you need to book in advance. Access information for all venues is provided at the end of this programme alongside a map of the City centre events to help you navigate your way around Cambridge. Open Cambridge is part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme. Designed to offer special access to places that are normally closed to the public or charge admission, the initiative provides an annual opportunity for people to discover the local history and heritage of their community. For more information please visit: www.heritageopendays.org.uk Many Colleges and museums across the City allow public access throughout the year with a variety of opening hours and charges. We have produced a guide for your information: www.cam.ac.uk/visitors

Top tips Open Cambridge is a busy weekend and lots of our events book up quickly. This year we have tried to meet popular demand and are pleased to offer a greater number of drop-in events. We hope that this will enable more people to enjoy the many things on offer in our programme. Many of the venues hosting drop-in events are historic buildings and have a limited capacity. In these instances we ask for your patience and cooperation with our staff and volunteers. • Booking is only required where mentioned and unless otherwise stated is available at: www.cam.ac.uk/open-cambridge • Bookings open on Monday 18 August at 10am. • We recommend booking online. If you have any problems booking this way, please contact us on: 01223 766766. • Our phone line is open Monday – Friday from 10am – 3pm. • We regret that the Public Engagement team is unable to accept bookings via email or those left on our telephone voicemail system. • Tickets are strictly limited to four per person per event. • Places are limited for events that do not require booking and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. • Please arrive promptly for all talks, walks and tours. You may be refused entry if you arrive after the event has started even if you have made a booking. • There may still be spaces available at events that are listed as fully booked; you are welcome to turn up and enquire on the day. • Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Open Cambridge takes place across dozens of locations, each with their own architectural style, character and level of accessibility. We have indicated available facilities at our venues on pages 22 – 23 to help you plan your visit.
