Professor Bashir MakhoulWhether it’s research, student satisfaction, or subject-specific achievements, it’s been a great time for UCA. More students than ever are undertaking UCA courses – 11,000 in total, from more than 90 different countries, are studying with us here in the UK, and around the world.
Every year we’re ranked by leading publications, and within industry, where we’ve seen continued improvement and growth. We were also recently rated on our research, through the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which happens every seven years. Check out our achievements below:
› UCA is the UK’s top specialist creative university for world-leading research outputs (REF 2021)
› The Guardian has ranked us the second specialist creative university in the UK for 2023
› The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 has ranked us the third specialist creative university in the UK
› Architecture – we’re ranked third for student satisfaction on architecture courses by the Complete University Guide 2023, and 15th in the UK by the Guardian in 2023

› Music – we’re ranked top for student satisfaction in music courses by the Complete University Guide 2023.
“The Guardian has ranked us the second specialist creative university in the UK for 2023.”
When UCA became a university, we wanted to do things differently. Looking around, we could see that other institutions were doing a great job of preparing their students for their chosen fields, giving them all the practical tools they needed to succeed in the roles that existed there and then. They still are.
The problem was that the world wasn’t just stationary. It still isn’t. As the pace of change accelerates daily, the future demands creative people who can ride that wave, endlessly carving out their own paths as they adapt and evolve to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Some universities might think this is a tricky problem to solve. To us, it’s everything. At UCA, change is the stuff of life. It demands and breeds creativity. So we do, too.
In everything you do here, you’ll be preparing yourself to thrive in this glorious, shifting, evolving world.
What success means today will have changed again tomorrow. So we’ll help you unlock the mindset to continually create and recreate your own unique version of brilliance – whatever the future throws at you. Partly because life and work are just more fun that way. But also so that, when you graduate, you’ll know we really mean it when we tell you: ‘You’ve got this.’
“At UCA, change is the stuff of life. It demands and breeds creativity. So we do, too.”
Dear future student,
You might not have heard of Students’ Unions before, but all you really need to know is that we exist to ensure you have the best time possible at UCA. Over the years, we’ve won national awards for our work and are always striving to do new and better things. From improving your academic experience to facilitating social opportunities on campus, we represent the student voice across the university. This means that everything we do here at UCASU is for the benefit of our members, and we hope you’ll be one very soon!
Sol & Foysal
Membership from day one
Did you know that when you enrol on a course at UCA, you automatically become a member of UCASU? Led by and for students, UCASU is a registered charity that acts independently of the university to represent you and your interests. You can be as involved as you want with your Students’ Union. From joining clubs and societies to attending events or taking part in elections for Course Representatives and Union Council, there are lots of opportunities!
Union Council and Course Reps
Each year you’ll be invited to take part in UCASU elections. This is your opportunity to choose the representatives who will sit on the Union Council and act as the voice of students. UCASU also has elected Course Reps who represent your interests and relay feedback to the University to ensure you get the most from your course and have the best experience while studying at UCA.
Meet your union
Clubs, Societies, and Identity Communities
One UCASU highlight is that it creates opportunities for you to meet others, explore your non-academic interests, and discover new hobbies. So, whether you’re into K-pop dance, cheerleading, sports or culture, or you’re looking to be part of our disabled or LGBTQ+ communities, there’s something for everyone.
Activities and support
Throughout the year, UCASU hosts events and activities that you are more than welcome to join in with and support. And if you find yourself with a problem, or you’re ever struggling and need some independent advice, there’s a wealth of information and support available through your union. You’ll find a UCASU office in each campus, right in the heart of things, so make sure to say hello and get involved! And if you want to keep on top of the latest news, events, and opportunities, you’ll find it on most social media platforms with the @ucasu tag.
“One UCASU highlight is that it creates opportunities for you to meet others, explore your non-academic interests, and discover new hobbies.”
Helping you towards your creative career 19
When thinking about your career, there’s only one thing as important as your education – and that’s building industry experience. At UCA, we’re laser-focused on helping you get ready for a career in the creative industries, which means exposing you to opportunities while you study so that, by the time you graduate, you will have a CV that showcases both your academic skills and your experience. From live industry briefs and work placements through to Professional Practice Years, there’s an option to suit you.
Work placements
Preparing graduates for successful careers underpins everything we do, and all students are offered an industry placement lasting anywhere between two weeks and a year, depending on their individual needs. We’ll draw on our wide range of contacts within the creative industries to ensure you’re offered opportunities that align with your interests and career aspirations.
Professional Practice Years
Many of our undergraduate degrees offer the option of an additional Professional Practice Year. If you choose this route, you’ll take a study break between years two and three to go on a year-long placement related to your studies. Learn more on the course pages at uca.ac.uk
Live industry briefs
One of the most exciting features of UCA degree courses is the opportunity to take part in live industry briefs, and competitions for real businesses. You’ll collaborate on designs, creative briefs and proposals that will prepare you for the world of work and
support you in making lifelong professional connections.
Careers and Professional Practice
UCA’s Careers and Professional Practice team will be with you every step of the way as you take your first steps into the creative industries, both during and after your studies. They’ll help you find opportunities for placements and provide in-depth guidance on how to secure them, as well as supporting you to find freelancing opportunities, and even your first job as a graduate. Beyond that, the team offer guidance on competition entries and awards applications, and organise career-related presentations, workshops, and events.
“By the time you graduate, you will have a CV that showcases both your academic skills and your experience.”
What I learned at UCA 20
UCA is many things to many different people, but don’t take our word for it! A few of our current and former students reveal what UCA taught them about their chosen subject – and themselves:
Hannah Bamgbala
Fashion Media & Promotion**
I was blessed to come across UCA during my extensive search and, during my first visit, I knew that UCA was the place for me. The environment was warm and friendly, and it felt like home. Home is what UCA became. I loved the support that came from UCA from the start of my journey to the very end.
Sarah Barnes
Fashion Journalism**
I was really sold on the open day when I first visited the campus and listened to the inspiring talks from the lecturers. The whole environment, and the way we were really encouraged to explore whatever creative path we wanted to, was a real pull for me. I thought, ‘why wait to specialise when I know that going into fashion and the creative industries is what I really want to do?’ I ultimately knew that UCA was the place to help me get there.
Youngdae Lee
Film Production
Looking back, the most important thing I learned at UCA is the discovery of passion and possibility. While studying movies, I fell in love with movies more. My passion led to opportunities for submitting films and that, in turn, uncovered more possibilities.
Faris Hattas
Business & Management
The course gives you so much creative freedom. You learn a lot about yourself from that, and you start to grow. For me personally, I have noticed a huge difference between the work I produced when I started the course, and where I am right now. That is all because of our great lecturers, who are always there to motivate and push us to be as creative as we can. One of my favourite things about the course is how it challenges us to expand our creative skills.
Chantelle Rogers
Fine Art (Canterbury)
My experience at UCA so far has been very enjoyable. Life on the Fine Art course is collaborative and creative – we are always encouraged to experiment with our work and the tutors have really helped me throughout the course. It was surprising to me that UCA could offer so many opportunities: I’ve travelled, I’ve collaborated with lots of other students, participated in Fine Art exhibitions, worked with the Student Union, volunteered as a course representative. Everything along the way has helped me in my own practice as an artist.
Beti Bara Advertising
UCA’s Advertising course was exactly what I expected and nothing like I expected at the same time – my experience was very self-paced. I chose which disciplines and mediums I wanted to explore, and to what extent. This combination of exploration and practice proved to be so helpful in understanding who I am as a creative, and
how to combine my creative skills with others’. The biggest highlight has probably been getting a taste for the industry’s highs and lows, from frustrating late nights to the glorious revelations of cracking difficult briefs. So many of my favourite moments circle around those ups and downs; they always remind me how much I love doing what I’m doing.
Jamahyl Chan-Ellis Acting & Performance
My journey at UCA was my transition from being a teenager to a fully-fledged adult. Moving away from home, living with new housemates, learning new skills, maintaining relationships among family/friends, managing money, adjusting to Farnham, developing my acting skills, and keeping my mental health stable – it truly was a whirlwind. Looking back, I would say all the performances were fun, especially the final dissertation piece. Having the freedom to create our own work or collaborate with others for our final piece of work was great.
The freedom the course gives you (for the most part) works really well, especially for someone like me, who is very independent. The great thing was that all my teachers made time for me if I needed advice or feedback.
Lucas Salvador Games Arts
I couldn’t see myself having a better preparation for the games industry than this course. The proximity to one of the largest game development centres in the world, in Guildford, is also a massive perk.
“The biggest highlight has probably been getting a taste for the industry’s highs and lows, from frustrating late nights to the glorious revelations of cracking difficult briefs.”
What happened next
After you leave UCA, your skills can take you anywhere. These graduates’ journeys offer exciting examples of the varied and wonderful career paths you could embark upon.
Ben Pearey
Ceramics graduate Ben has been named one of the top names to watch within the craft. His work features in the book Contemporary British Ceramics: Beneath the Surface and he has been exhibited at Eton College.

Craig Luck
A short story penned while studying for a degree in Film Production turned into something far larger for Craig. His tale, FINCH, became an Apple TV+ movie, starring Tom Hanks in the title role. He has also worked behind the scenes on movies including Doctor Strange, Annihilation, and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Georgina Sadler
After graduating in Graphic Design, Georgina moved into television, and now enjoys a career in the fast lane as an assistant producer for Sky Sports F1.
Lucy NobleFilm Production graduate Lucy has forged her career in the world of script supervision, ensuring continuity. She’s worked on productions such as Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, season one of hit series Devs, the Elton John musical Rocketman, and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, among many amazing movies and TV shows.
Mollie Ward
Mollie founded her own fashion brand, SoMonroe, while studying for her degree in Fashion Journalism**. Her clothes are now worn by the likes of Bella Hadid, Nicki Minaj, and Nicole Scherzinger.
Phoebe Fox
Phoebe discovered a love for photography during her Music Marketing & Promotion** degree and has merged the two in an incredible career photographing the likes of The Amazons and Anne-Marie.
Tihara Smith
Tihara’s Windrush-inspired final collection for her Fashion degree has turned into an exciting career – with an entire accessories collection and pop-up shop in London just part of her journey so far.
24 At the pinnacle of creativity
UCA has had a wealth of talented creatives reach the very top of their respective fields – here are some of our best-known:
At the pinnacle of creativity
A global approach
We believe all our students should have access to global creativity, influence, and learning. So, whether you’re a UK student, a student coming to the UK to join a creative course, or a student at one of our international partner centres – such as The Millennium College in Pakistan or the Institute of Creativity and Innovation (ICI), our joint institution with Xiamen University, China – you’ll find that UCA offers you courses with a global outlook, as well as an international network of friends and peers. Our commitment to playing a part in international creativity runs through everything we do. Our UK campuses are home to more than 3,000 students from more than 80 countries, which helps us to foster a rich and diverse community that makes our conversations and creations all the more exciting.
As our Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Bashir Makhoul says: “At UCA, we take a fully global approach to creative education, embracing perspectives and cultural references from around the world. No matter where you’re from, people have a desire to create, innovate, and change the narrative.”
We are proud to have established partnerships with institutions around the world, and to be conducting field-leading research that takes our work worldwide. Meanwhile, our curriculum has a global outlook at its heart. No matter what you study, your boundaries won’t be constrained to UK shores. You’ll learn historical contexts, theories, and practices from around the world – from world cinema to the global music industry, and contemporary art to textile dyeing techniques – and have opportunities to work with brands and businesses internationally.
“Our campuses are home to more than 3,000 students from more than 80 countries, which helps us to foster a rich and diverse community.”
Worldwide opportunities
UCA is all about global influence, experience, and expertise – so if your horizons extend beyond UK borders, we’ve got you covered. During your studies you’ll have the opportunity to go abroad to study or to volunteer. Whichever you choose, you’ll return with new perspectives, fantastic memories, and another string to your creative bow.
Semester exchange
If you are interested in studying abroad, there are lots of options for you to consider in Europe, America, Australia and Asia, and UCA’s exchange teams will visit campuses in your first semester to tell you more about it. The length (three or four years) of the degree you choose and the discipline will determine both the duration of your time abroad and the destination. We work with exchange partner institutions around the world, encompassing the majority of our study areas. You can find out more at uca.ac.uk/study-abroad
and Think Pacific, which operates in Fiji – so that you can give back to communities across the globe with your time, effort, and skills. Volunteering programmes include delivering creative arts programmes in rural villages, helping with mental health awareness, sports programmes, and youth empowerment.
BA (Hons) Printed Fashion Textiles student Jacob Morgan took his first ever trip abroad to visit Fiji and undertake a one-month mental health placement.
“The purpose of my trip was to promote mental health awareness. I wanted to use skills I’ve learned during my time at UCA to help the local community use art to help them when feeling down and to understand what they can do to feel better. Any students thinking about doing something like this – just do it! It was my first time flying and everyone thought I was mad to get on a 24-hour flight, but it was the best experience ever. I made friends and would love to go back.”
The organisations UCA work with operate around the world and are subject to change.
The Turing Scheme
As a UCA student you may be able to get funding help for your travels abroad through The UK government’s Turing Scheme. To find out more, visit turing-scheme.org.uk
Volunteering abroad
UCA currently works with several organisations based around the world – including Challenges Abroad, which works in Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal,
“During your studies you’ll have the opportunity to go abroad to study or to volunteer. Whichever you choose, you’ll return with new perspectives, fantastic memories, and another string to your creative bow.”

Supporting you at UCA 32
Coming to university is, for a lot of students, the first big life decision. Choosing a university, and a course, is just the start.
At UCA we want to help you through the process of applying – and support you while you’re with us. And that doesn’t just mean offering general information, but also a listening ear, help when you need it and, sometimes, more practical assistance.
Whether you need a hand finding that essential book, sourcing some specialist equipment for a project, help when a bulb blows in your accommodation, or looking for a part-time job, there are teams of staff around UCA to help you.
In each of our libraries you’ll find our student services team, who can help you in a number of ways:
Specialist Advisers
This team offer confidential, practical, and personal support with issues such as managing money, relationships with family, friends or roommates, visa applications and extensions, or familiarising yourself with UK life.
Wellbeing and Counselling Service
This is the place to go for support with your mental health and wellbeing. Our team will work with you to create a plan to help address your worries or concerns. We also have a university-wide wellbeing app full of useful tips and tools, and offer access to 24/7 online support.
Disability and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)
If you have a disability or condition that you choose to let us know about, we have
a dedicated team at each campus who can support you. They’ll work with you to understand your needs, help you apply for things like Disabled Students’ Allowance, and put tailored support in place.

Your designated member of staff will act as a point of reference for you and any carers or professionals working with you, ensuring seamless and confidential support throughout.
Library and Learning Support
We have Advisers in each library to help you get the very best from our library resources and services, Liaison Librarians who can provide information and guidance on how to search, use and reference our collections, and Learning Development Tutors to help you develop your academic skills, including managing your time effectively, understanding your assessment, and improving your academic writing.

The future is now 37
With a 160-year legacy of nurturing talent and imagination, UCA has plenty of great stories about how our students, staff, and alumni have broken new ground and pioneered fresh approaches across every creative discipline.
But it’s not in our nature to spend too long reliving history – we believe passionately that the best tribute to those who came before us is to build on their work by leading the way in today’s creative industries. We focus on looking forward, anticipating trends, and preparing students for the future. We do this by offering world-leading courses that bring together a global outlook and the very latest in technology. Here’s just some of what we’ve put in place to future-proof your learning:
Creative Technology
Our refitted and state-of-the-art John Luard Building at UCA Farnham is packed floor-to-ceiling with top-level computer hardware and software. From dual monitor Alienware workstations with the very latest graphics cards, to 24-inch Wacom Cintiq Pro tablets and a range of development studios, there’s everything you need to create digital worlds, characters, and playable game prototypes.
There are also software and facilities for VR- and AR-immersive narrative, world-building and experience design, motion capture facilities (in both dedicated spaces and portable setups), and 3D printing to create tangible realisations of your digital characters.
Andy Bossom, Programme Director for our Games courses, says: “The world of games and creative technology is an exciting and constantly evolving area of the creative industries that has been seeing exceptional growth in recent years. At UCA we have everything a student needs to get started
on their career and to adapt those highly transferable skillsets to a wealth of industry pathways, from entertainment games to simulations, and concept art to gamification of learning, as well as serious and applied games.”
Virtual Production Studio
The technology harnessed in the filming of the Disney+ hit series The Mandalorian, using bleeding edge technology such as virtual production, is an increasingly popular choice for those looking for something more dynamic than just green screen. Our new Virtual Production Studio at UCA Farnham replicates the contemporary interdisciplinary film studio experience, combining CGI, game engines, and virtual reality technologies to provide real-time immersive storytelling production workflows. By having access to these facilities, and becoming skilled in operating them, you’ll graduate with highly sought-after skills.
World-first courses
We were the first university in the world to offer a degree in Digital Fashion using industry-standard software packages such as Marvellous Designer. This rapidly growing sector of the industry, which is currently setting trends in the luxury market and the metaverse, could soon become a part of everyday online shopping experiences and digital economies. Our MA in Digital Fashion is a natural progression for fashion students, but also those coming from gaming or post production VFX backgrounds. Still in the postgraduate fashion sphere, we recently launched our first fully online MA course in Global Fashion Cultures, which allows anyone from anywhere in the world to gain a UCA qualification.
Our research community
Research. It’s the kind of thing you most commonly hear about in the health sector, as people in lab coats chase life-saving medical breakthroughs. But research is embedded in our culture at UCA, too. And your journey with it begins when you start your undergraduate degree. Research helps us to back up our claims and dig deeper into any given topic – from ceramics all the way through to social commentary on popular games.
As you progress through your studies, you’ll come to rely on research to help you investigate topics and develop your work. Your relationship with it will grow and change as you start to use it not just to support your claims, but also to make your own discoveries.
Meanwhile, our academics are leading the way in creative research that is actively changing the way we all work and live. It’s for this reason we were named the UK’s top specialist art and design university for world-leading research outputs (REF, 2021) We’ve recently opened our Doctoral College at Rochester House in Canterbury, giving our many PhD students, as well as our academics, a base for their research. Here are just some of the exciting projects they are currently running:
“Our academics are leading the way in creative research that is actively changing the way we all work and live.”
Fast Forward
Led by Anna, Fast Forward is designed to promote and engage with women in photography worldwide. The project has published a full report with recommendations on how to amplify women’s voices in the field, along with a book, Putting Ourselves In The Picture.
Centre for Sustainable Design Professor
The Centre for Sustainable Design leads and participates in future-shaping research focused on sustainable innovation and product sustainability, from finding innovative uses for retired fishing nets and cricket equipment to running the successful Farnham Repair Café.
Etude for Virtual Space
Alexandros, a composer and expert in music and its relationship with philosophy, created a VR experience featuring a string quartet within a virtual environment, which users can navigate to experience interactive sounds, shapes, and colours.
Architecture Programme Director Sam created an app that allows architects to virtually map spaces and visualise the human experience of navigating an environment.
Our campuses
UCA Canterbury
With its historic surroundings and café culture, Canterbury is a lovely place to explore while you study at UCA. Our relaxed and friendly campus, with its architecture studios, design labs, and fine art facilities, is located just on the edge of the city. The Cathedral and an array of shops, cafés and restaurants are only a short walk away. You’ll discover new things all the time, with a wealth of attractions, galleries and museums on offer. And on sunny days, it’s only a quick bus ride away from the Kent coastline.
Popular spots for students include The Penny Theatre pub, which offers live sport, meal deals, karaoke, and quizzes. For a tasty snack on the go, look no further than Cité Crêpes. You can catch blockbusters and the best indie releases at the Curzon Cinema or have a day out at Howletts Wild Animal Park for something completely different. Westgate Gardens, which run alongside the River Stour, are a favourite hangout of students in the area, and we couldn’t talk about Canterbury without recommending a visit to the Cathedral to admire its impressive architecture and stained-glass windows.

Our courses
Choosing the right course
Many students who apply to UCA already have a passion for a particular creative field, or a specific career goal in mind. But a lot don’t! If that’s you, there’s no need to worry. We understand it can be hard to narrow your choices down to one subject when you have a wide range of interests, but honestly, your open-mindedness, curiosity and desire to experiment can be just as much of an asset as a laser-focused ambition.
If you’re struggling to decide what to study, here are a few questions to ask yourself.
When did you last lose track of time?
Is there something you get so absorbed in doing that you forget everything else? Think about what interests you and what you enjoy doing most. Make a list. Does anything stand out as something you could make a career in? Or something you’d want to spend a lot more time learning about?
When you imagine your future, what does it look like?
Lots of students say, when choosing their course, they thought about where they wanted to end up professionally and worked backwards, looking at the qualifications they needed to get there. Even if you don’t have a specific job in mind, something as simple as thinking about the kind of environment you want to work in will give you some valuable clues.
How much do you want to specialise?
If you want to keep your career options as open as possible, it’s worth considering broader, more theoretical courses (e.g. Fine Art) that develop a wide range of skills relevant to lots of careers. Check out the
course pages on our website to see what graduates in different subjects have gone on to do.
What are you good at?
While it’s admirable to thrive on a challenge, most students say they’ve tried to play to their strengths. That might mean having a specific talent you want to take to the next level, or just choosing a subject that gives you opportunities to shine at things you do well. For example, great problem-solvers might suit Architecture or Product & Furniture Design, the super-organised could excel at Events & Festivals Management, and those with an eye for what makes people tick may find a marketing-focused course is their thing. You might simply feel you’re stronger in practical areas than theoretical ones (or vice versa) and want to bear that in mind when making your choice.
How would you describe yourself?
Happy to dedicate days to creating one perfect piece or work, or developing a new skill? Looking for a path that leads you into contact with lots of different people? Enjoy fast-paced learning that ranges from topic to topic? Your personality will have a big influence on the kind of course you will enjoy, so think about the type of learning you like, and consider the courses that allow you to spend the most time in your preferred ‘zone’.
And don’t forget, we’re here to help you decide! You can chat to current students across different subject areas on the UCA website, or contact our Admissions team with any questions about different courses and subjects.
Choosing your learning journey 61
At UCA, we understand that not everyone joins our courses from the same starting point, and that what you are looking for from your studies is unique to you. That’s why we offer several options to tailor your course to suit your needs – whether that means adding an Integrated Foundation Year to bridge the gap between your previous experience and your chosen degree, or choosing a route that gives you some added professional experience before you graduate. Or even doing both! Here’s a roundup of your options.
Standard BA/BSc/BMus (Hons) degree
Our most popular option, this route involves going straight from A Levels (or equivalent) to undergraduate study in your chosen subject. For students following this route, degree courses take three years to complete.
Integrated Foundation Year
If you’re a UK student and have never studied a creative subject before, or need to develop your portfolio and skills before starting your degree, an Integrated Foundation Year will prepare you for undergraduate study, giving you confidence, solid knowledge of creative practice, and essential study skills. You’ll explore a range of creative techniques, and develop your portfolio within your chosen subject area. If you’ve applied to our standard route and we think you might benefit from this one instead, we’ll get in touch to discuss it with you.
Professional Practice Year
If you want to get a solid chunk of built-in professional experience as part of your degree, you might want to consider our Professional Practice Year route. This gives you the chance to take a study break between years two and three of your undergraduate course and go on a year-long placement related to your studies – for example, you might spend the year working in a fashion house, retail brand, magazine, or cosmetics company, before returning to UCA for your final year of study and graduating with an enhanced CV.

At UCA, we know you’re about more than just grades. To us, exams are only part of the picture – your creativity and what you can do are just as important. Which is why, when you apply to most of our courses, we ask to see a portfolio. We’ll ask you to bring these to your Applicant Day (or submit your portfolio digitally if you’re outside the UK). Your Applicant Day is a fun and informal experience and an opportunity for you to meet us, and for us to learn more about you as a person.
If it’s not practical to bring physical work along to your Applicant Day, then you can always photograph it and put it on a memory stick. When providing work digitally, remember to include a password if the work is protected. We want to see what inspires you, what you create, and what makes you unique. And if your course doesn’t ask for a portfolio but you still want to show us your work, we’d love to see it anyway.
For most courses, we’ll ask for 12 to 20 examples of your recent work that show off your experience, interests, aspirations, and passion for your subject.
We really hope you’ve got all the information you need and are feeling excited about starting the next stage of your journey with us at UCA.

200 Funding your studies
Going to university is a big investment in your future, and one of the biggest tasks is sorting out your funding and paying your fees. We’re here to help you through the process.
Tuition fees: what to expect
Your main outlay will be your tuition fees. For almost all UK undergraduate students, the Student Loans Company (SLC) will lend you the money for your fees, so you don’t have to pay upfront. There are two types of loans:
› Tuition fee loans are not means-tested, and all UK students can apply to cover the full cost of tuition
› Maintenance loans are designed to help you with living costs, like accommodation, food, supplies, and travel. These are means-tested, with the amount you borrow based on where you live and your household income.
You’ll only start to repay your loan to the SLC when you start earning more than £27,295 (or £25,375 in Scotland) a year. This works similarly to how you pay tax – repayments are taken out of your earnings before you receive your net pay, and the more you earn, the more you repay. The website gov.uk/student-finance will give you an idea of how much you could borrow and what your future repayments might look like.
What will it cost?
Although 2024 figures hadn’t been released at the time we went to print, the 2023–2024 (undergraduate degree) figures in the table below will give you a rough idea of what to expect. For the latest information about our fees, visit uca.ac.uk/fees.
Additional costs
There will be other expenses to consider on top of your tuition fees, such as the cost of mandatory trips and exhibitions, and materials. We’ll tell you as much as we can about these when we offer you a place. When you’re planning your finances, remember to consider other outlays, such as accommodation, groceries and food, utility bills, equipment, and art materials.

UCA offers scholarships and fee discounts for a range of learners and subject areas – you can find out more on our website: uca.ac.uk/scholarships.
