Transforming e-waste into job and business opportunities in Cambodia Newsletter, 1st edition, February 2014 Project Overview In 2012, UNIDO forged partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Samsung Electronics in creating jobs, business opportunities and ensuring effective management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) in Cambodia. A three year project with the total budget of USD 1,350,000, UNIDO works closely with two line Ministries in Cambodia namely the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training (MOLVT) through National Technical Training Institute (NTTI) and Ministry of Environment (MOE). Through its inter-related expected outcomes: strengthened capacities of youth sector to support the increase in employment and business opportunities in the electronic industry and improved e-waste management skills, knowledge and practices, the project contributes to (1) the Cambodia National Youth policy in which its main strategies includes but not limits to the promotions of education, training, capacity development, and development of entrepreneurial thinking and labor market; (2) the achievement the Government’s 3R (reduce, re-use, recycle) National Strategy & National Green Growth Roadmap. The project is being implemented in five target sites: Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Cham, and Siem Reap provinces, and the capital Phnom Penh.

Training of Trainers (TOT): Installation and repair services

Consequently, a series of rollout trainings on the “Installation and Repair Services” was organized from June to August 2013 in each of the target provinces and capital city. The trainings aimed at providing and upgrading the installation and repair skills to target youth beneficiaries for employment. As a result, 110 youths were trained, of which 34% of those trained are now employed in repair shops or have started their own small repair services business.

Baseline study and comprehensive assessment: Improvement and availability of baseline information for effective e-waste management in Cambodia A quick stakeholder assessment which included a review & analysis of the available data on e-waste management was conducted in April 2012 by UNIDO’s international expert through desk review, interviews, consultations with different stakeholders and field exposures. Overview of the e-waste management landscape was reviewed and key players, issues, opportunities in waste and non-waste electrical, electronic equipment (EEE) businessesfor possible project interventions were identified. The results of the quick assessment also provided strategic guidance for UNIDO’s counterpart, Ministry of Environment to conduct the e-waste comprehensive assessment in Cambodia.
