INTRODUCTION A message from the Staff of the Centre for English and World Languages and International Development We look forward to welcoming you to our British and Academic Culture course that is the first part of JYA English Plus programme. The British Culture and Academic Culture course is delivered through the Centre for English and World Languages at the University of Kent. This British and Academic Culture Pre-arrival Guide contains important information and we recommend that you read it as soon as possible in conjunction with the Getting Started pages on the University of Kent website. The British and Academic Culture induction session will take place on the first day of your course; the details presented in this guide are intended as a useful indication. More detailed information about the course will be provided during the induction session.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE Enrolment You must enrol online prior to arriving in the UK and at the University. If you do not do this the university will be unable to provide you with a student ID card and access to library and computer facilities. Online enrolment should only take ten minutes. You will need to provide your Kent ID number and a passport size photograph in .jpg format. Please use the link below: http://www.kent.ac.uk/gettingstarted/enrol.html

Travel and Accommodation Please click on the link below for directions to the University and campus maps: http://www.kent.ac.uk/maps/canterbury/maps.html If you need to book a taxi from the airport to the University please follow the link below: http://www.kent.ac.uk/internationalstudent/taxi.html You will receive accommodation information by email from International Development department. On campus accommodation is only available from 19 April. If you wish to arrive earlier, you will have to arrange your own accommodation. WHEN YOU ARRIVE What to do when you arrive at the University Please follow the accommodation information and go to your room and relax. On Monday morning, 20th April, please go to Cornwallis North West Seminar Room 6 (the entrance is opposite from the Colyer-Fergusson Building) where you will meet staff from the Centre for English and World Languages and from International Development and receive all the information you require to help you settle in. PLEASE NOTE: Please remember to bring your passport in order to collect your student ID card and complete your formal registration with the University.

Course Structure The course follows integrated approach which means that you will have a lesson on academic culture, British culture and followed with related project works each day.

Course Teaching Materials The course will be from Garnet’s Academic Culture book and the Cambridge Exploring British Culture text. Reference will also be made to the Pre-sessional Pre-Arrival Guide and the Kent website. You will receive the main course book, Academic Culture in the first class.
