Kent is one of the UK’s leading universities and attracts a large number of international students, thanks to our global reputation for academic excellence and inspirational teaching. Our academic schools produce world-class research, and Kent is rated as internationally excellent, leading the way in many fields of study.

Our location Established in 1965, the University’s Canterbury campus is situated in the south-east of England, one hour away from London by high-speed train. The historic city of Canterbury is only a 25- minute walk from the campus and offers a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as historic sites, including the world- famous Canterbury Cathedral.

About our short courses The University of Kent has been providing short courses for visiting groups of university and school students for more than 20 years. Our courses combine interesting English language tuition with exciting excursions and cultural visits to Kent and London.

How are our courses structured? Our courses are flexible and can be tailored to incorporate your requirements. They generally include: • • • •

English language classes in the morning guided project work in the afternoon pronunciation and presentation skills activities and excursions

What are the course aims? Our courses aim to: 

activate and further develop English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing

develop communication skills

consolidate use of grammatical structures and functions

extend vocabulary range

improve pronunciation

develop confidence in the use of English

develop intercultural awareness and an understanding of life in the UK

Weekly schedule:  

English language classes in all four skills cultural and educational visits

Assessment Learning outcomes On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to: 1. Communicate in English with increased confidence and competence 2. Understand and use idiomatic expressions in English appropriately 3. Pronounce English more accurately and communicate more fluently 4. Interact confidently and comfortably with people from different cultures 5. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in Britain

Participants will be assessed through entry and exit level English language tests.


Accommodation and meals Participants will be offered accommodation in student houses or residences on campus, with full board, bed and breakfast or self-catering meal plans.

Social and Sports activities The social and sports activities available to students during the course can include: • • • •

evening activities in Canterbury and on campus quizzes and film evenings pub and café evenings sports events with other international students studying at CEWL

Dinner in a student house on campus

Cultural activities Cultural activities may include: • organised excursions to London, Dover and Leeds Castle • Cultural exchanges with other students Bat and Trap- a traditional Kent game

Entry requirements Our courses can be tailored to fit your group’s requirements.

Course fee Indicative Costs and Financial Arrangements (available on request) The cost covers: • Classroom tuition • Cultural activities as confirmed in the final course documentation • Food and accommodation • All equipment, resources and materials, including a welcome pack; class hand-outs, textbooks/ materials; access to university library, university computer clusters, e-mail and language and media resource centre; welcome and farewell events; a certificate of attendance
