European programmes Brussels Europe and the World Arrive: Sunday 19 June Depart: Saturday 2 July 2016 Live and study in ‘the capital of Europe’ and benefit from access to some of the very best professors and practitioners in the field of international relations. You will have the opportunity to engage with professionals working in institutions

such as NATO, the European Commission and the European Parliament, and also participate in a specially designed careers workshop. This tailor-made programme combines expert classroom-based teaching and superb cultural activities, including guided visits to the sites and institutions related to your studies. You will have the opportunity to debate with academics and practitioners who have both theoretical and practical experience, and you will experience first-hand this vibrant and truly international city. Previous programme content has included: Doing Business in

Europe; Europe and Emerging Powers; Life in the European Parliament; Europe and the Global Economic Crisis; International and European Migration, and a field trip to the battlefields of the First World War. The University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies is a specialist postgraduate centre, which offers English languagebased degrees covering the spectrum of international affairs. Our strong links with Brusselsbased organisations greatly enhance the teaching on our programmes and short courses and students benefit from many opportunities for research, internships and future employment.

Paris Revolutions Arrive: Sunday 17 July Depart: Saturday 30 July 2016 Immerse yourself for two weeks in the heart of Paris and examine how French culture has been at the forefront of innovation in the fields of architecture, film, art, drama, creative writing, literature and philosophy. Enjoy daily seminars, lectures and workshops taught by experts in the fields of architecture, art, creative writing, drama, film, literature and philosophy, followed by guided visits to some of the most important cultural sites in the world, such as the Louvre, Centre Pompidou and the Orsay Museum. You will also have opportunities to explore the city for yourself

– our Centre is in the heart of Montparnasse, the area where Picasso and Modigliani had their studios and where Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway frequented the cafés. Previous programme content has included: Contemporary Digital Cinema; From Futurism to Concrete Poetry – Typographical Revolutions; France’s Changing Elites in an Age of Revolution; Picasso in Paris; UNESCO’s Role in Europe and the World, and field trips to the Catacombs de Paris and the Palace and Gardens of Versailles. The University of Kent centre in Paris offers a unique selection of innovative and cross-disciplinary postgraduate degrees in the Humanities. These two-centre MA’s

offer students an exceptional opportunity to study film, art, creative writing, literature, history and architecture, following in the footsteps of eminent intellectuals and artists who lived in, and took inspiration from, Canterbury and Paris. Students’ experience in these two cities is further enhanced by the cultural and linguistic immersion in Paris, the capital of European culture and knowledge.

University Guide 2016, arts at Kent is also ranked 1st for research power in the Research Excellence Framework. We have professionalstandard drama studios, two theatres, a sound studio and a theatre design suite. There are also industry-standard film production and viewing facilities, including the Lupino Cinema. Our Studio 3 Gallery has hosted work by artists such as Peter Blake and Tracey Emin.

UK programmes Canterbury Exploring Visual Cultures: Art, Film & Performance Arrive: Saturday 9 July Depart: Sunday 17 July 2016 Are you considering post-graduate study options and opportunities in Film Studies, Drama and Theatre, Media Arts or History of Art? The School of Arts has a top ten ranking in three of these subject areas and has been recognised for its research and teaching excellence. This one week, intensive summer school will provide a subject introduction to a range of visual, filmic and performance media, associated theories and debates which you might expect to encounter at graduate level. It will also provide an opportunity to

discuss some of your subject and research interests and aspirations with the academics who teach on these programmes and to share some of their research specialisms. Educational study visits to galleries, museums and theatres in Kent and London will also form part of your unique learning experience. There will also be an opportunity for one to one support and feedback on authoring personal statements and guidance on devising researchbased applications for graduatelevel study. Our School of Arts has an international reputation for its teaching and research, and offers top-level arts teaching and research facilities. Ranked 3rd for Film and 6th for History of Art in the Guardian

European Security and Foreign Policy Arrive: Sunday 3 July Depart: Sunday 17 July 2016 This course focuses on contemporary security issues facing Europe today and on how European states are adapting to their new role in providing security both within and beyond their territory. The course is designed to give you a thorough overview of contemporary security issues and how they are addressed by European, and international security, institutions. The course will provide a conceptual overview of the most important topics and will discuss specific case studies to illustrate concepts and explore key themes. You will examine the institutions of EU foreign and security policy; the future of the transatlantic relationship and of NATO; interinstitutional cooperation between the EU and the UN and other international actors in pursuit of ‘effective multilateralism’; regional

challenges such as integrating the Balkans and solving the ‘frozen conflicts’ as well as European engagement farther afield such as Afghanistan and sub-Saharan Africa; and European responses towards the rise of emerging powers and their effect on global governance. Our School of Politics and International Relations is ranked in the UK top 10 in the Guardian University Guide 2016 and, in the Research Excellence Framework, is ranked 15th in the UK for research power. The School combines highquality teaching with cutting-edge research in a supportive environment that welcomes students from all over the world.

Medieval Canterbury and Kent: Crown, Church, Communities and Culture Arrive: Sunday 17 July Depart: Sunday 31 July 2016 Medieval Canterbury and Kent are justly famous for having owned a 1215 copy of Magna Carta, for being the site of St Thomas Becket’s internationally important shrine and for inspiring Geoffrey Chaucer’s masterpiece The Canterbury Tales. Moreover, the county’s location between London and the Channel ports and France meant that its roads were traversed by merchants, ambassadors and pilgrims, but also soldiers who were engaged in such conflicts as the Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses. This meant that Canterbury and other Kentish towns and cities were a hive

of commercial activity but also a melting pot of ideas and people. Through the lens of Canterbury and Kent, and using the four themes of Crown, Church, Communities and Culture, you will examine wideranging aspects of medieval society and get to explore first-hand these historically important locations. The course comprises guided visits to World Heritage Sites, and workshops, seminars and lectures to analyse how people lived, worked, worshipped, played and died in the Middle Ages. You will also have the opportunity to handle documents and artefacts, some of which are over 1000 years old. In addition to superb teaching, you will benefit from the experience of living and studying in the historically significant city of Canterbury and county of Kent. Our School of History is recognized as one of the leading departments in the UK, renowned for its research excellence, flexible programmes and high quality teaching. Wartime in the Garden of England: Canterbury, Kent and the two World Wars Arrive: Sunday 31 July Depart:Sunday 14 August 2016 The English county of Kent is perhaps most famous for the historic Cathedral City of Canterbury, and more tranquil pastimes such as the growing of fruit and hops. Twice in the twentieth century, however, this rural region found itself on the frontline of devastating global conflicts. This fascinating course traces the dramatic story of Canterbury and Kent’s experiences throughout the two world wars. You will be able to develop your research skills in local archives and visit important heritage sites, including Canterbury Cathedral and Dover Castle. You will consider subjects including: experience of air raids; invasion

fears; the Dunkirk evacuation; the Battle of Britain; remembrance and memorialisation, and critically evaluate the impact of the wars on culture, memory, and notions of local (and national) identity. Our School of History is recognized as one of the leading departments in the UK, renowned for its research excellence, flexible programmes and high quality teaching. Ranked 8th in the UK for research power (Research Excellence Framework), we also have some of the most satisfied students in the country. Investigating the Social Mind Arrive: Sunday 31 July Depart: Sunday 14 August 2016 Research indicates that interpersonal relationships and group-based interactions are strongly affected by how people understand and react to the world

which surrounds them. During this course you will investigate recent research into psychology relating to the ‘social mind’ and how this influences people’s thoughts and behaviours. You will gain key insight into important aspects of the human psyche and develop an understanding of the key factors that influence the way we live and work with other people. Ranked 5th in the UK for graduate employment prospects (Complete University Guide 2016) and 11th for research intensity (Research Excellence Framework), Kent is one of the best places to study Psychology. We are highly regarded as a leading European centre for postgraduate research and have an international reputation for excellence in social psychology (including group processes and intergroup relations), cognition and neuroscience; developmental psychology and forensic psychology. Biotechnology: Advanced lab skills Arrive: Sunday 17 July Depart: Sunday 31 July 2016 This practical course will introduce you to key concepts and practical techniques in biochemistry through a series of workshops and seminars and laboratory project time. This course is for students entering their final year in a Biology-related subject wishing to supplement their degree with additional skills training to give them a competitive edge when they graduate.

Kent’s School of Biosciences is one of the UK’s premier centres of learning and discovery and an excellent place to study the biological sciences. It ranks as one of the most active departments in biological sciences in the UK, with research funding in excess of £4.5 million per annum. Our expertise in biochemistry, microbiology and biomedical science allows us to develop groundbreaking ideas in genetics, molecular biology, protein science and biophysics. All of our degree programmes attained top ten positions in the UK in the National Student Survey for the second year running, and the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), placed the School in the top 10 for research intensity.

WHERE CAN I STUDY? The UK’s European university, Kent has beautiful campuses in south-east England, less than an hour from London, and specialist centres in Europe. Our summer school programme offers opportunities to study in Canterbury, Brussels and Paris.

European locations Brussels The ‘capital of Europe’, Brussels is home to the main institutions of the European Union, NATO, numerous political organisations, NGOs, think tanks and multinational companies. It is a vibrant and truly international city with an active cultural scene. Offering a diverse range of music and art venues, the city also hosts regular events including jazz weekends and film festivals.

English is widely spoken and there are excellent transport links. Kent is the only UK university to have a centre in Brussels. Our Brussels School of International Studies offers a close-knit student community with excellent opportunities for networking, internships and professional advancement.

Paris Paris is known as the capital of European culture and knowledge. It boasts a vast range of museums, theatres, monuments, exhibitions, music venues and cultural activities. Famous sites include the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Sorbonne, the Pantheon and the Eiffel Tower. English is widely spoken and there are excellent transport links. Our location in Paris allows students to capitalise on the history and heritage of the cultural centre of Europe. It provides modern study and support facilities within 18thcentury buildings in a historic corner of Montparnasse, with easy access to all the cultural resources on offer.

UK locations Our Canterbury campus is located in the county of Kent. Affectionately named the ‘Garden of England’, the county boasts over 1,000 miles of countryside and 200 miles of unspoilt coastline. Situated in the South East corner of England, it is also the perfect location from which to explore mainland Europe. Departing from the ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, France can be reached in 30 minutes and Paris and Brussels are accessible in just under two hours.

Canterbury Canterbury is a beautiful and vibrant student city less than an hour from London. Virginia Woolf famously wrote “there is no lovelier place in the world than Canterbury”, and each year many students from around the world fall in love with the city’s diverse and cosmopolitan charm. As you’d expect from a city with nearly 30,000 students, there’s a

rich social life. According to a report from travel company Experian, Canterbury is the UK’s third most vibrant city. The city boasts many clubs, bars, restaurants and pubs as well as cinemas and sports facilities. Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre attracts many of the UK’s biggest and best touring shows and performances.

Set in 300 acres of green parkland overlooking the World Heritage Site of Canterbury Cathedral, our Canterbury campus is a friendly and vibrant environment with an excellent location. Within walking distance of the city, the campus offers green and tranquil open spaces, first-class resources and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The excellent social facilities include a range of restaurants and bars, cinema, theatre, music performance venue and nightclub. The campus is also a short trip away from the beautiful seaside towns of Whitstable, Herne Bay, Broadstairs and Margate, which offer a range of seafood eateries, boutique shops and cultural festivals. Margate is also home to the Turner Contemporary, an elegant landmark gallery and the largest exhibition space in the South East outside of London.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Dates Each summer school, with the exception of Exploring Visual Cultures, is offered as a two-week course, though you can combine multiple courses to create a longer programme of study (subject to availability). Tiered discounts are available if you book multiple programmes (see page 15).

Accommodation Canterbury If you choose to study on our Canterbury programmes, you will be offered on-campus, self-catered accommodation in Park Wood, our purpose-built student village. These terraced houses comprise five or six single bedrooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Shopping and laundry facilities are close at hand and all

accommodation costs, including gas, electricity and water charges, as well as internet access and personal contents insurance, are included.

Brussels Accommodation for our Brussels programmes will be offered in either the Vrije Universiteit Brussels’ UResidence or the Sleepwell Hostel. VUB’s U-Residence is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the University of Kent Brussels centre, conveniently located near to cafes, shops and the European Parliament and with excellent transport links into the city centre. The residence offers spacious rooms fully equipped with private bathroom, shower and basic kitchen. Amenities include Wi-Fi, TV and daily housekeeping.

Paris Students on our Paris programme have the opportunity to stay in the Foyer International des Etudiantes, which has a fabulous roof terrace overlooking the city.
