Streets designed contributing to ecological systems and identity 2016 Spring + 2016 Winter Capstone Studio Location: Licton Springs-Haller Lake Neighborhood Individual Work
N 130th Street is an important east-west commuting route for the residents who live in Bitter Lake/Haller Lake area. However, N 130th Street is not safe nor comfortable to walk along. In this design, I focus on creating more interesting route for residents and school kids. I weave together fragmented civic activities, transit, bicyclists and pedestrians through different tempos of design qualities that relate to their immediate context.

CONCEPT “THE SONATA” The concept of Sonata grows from the existing condition and qualities of the street tempo. As I identified certain walkable destinations and features, the character of each movement emerged. UNSAFE AND BUSY STREET N 130th Street is a car oriented street. There are 2 traffic lanes in each direction. The sidewalks wave little planted buffer to protect pedestrians from the fast moving traffic. It is not sate for people to walk. Lack of tree canopy is another reason make this street not comfortable to walk.
PEDESTRIAN |BICYCLIST |GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE The future light rail station make N 130th Street an important route for students and residents to go to work and school along. Green infrastructure can improve N 130th Street and make a safer corridor from Northacres park to the Bitter Lake Playground and places in between for pedestrians and bicyclists.
STREET CHARACTER Further more, the civic features that currently are fragmented along N 130th Street will influence the street’s character. It will make this street more fun with connecting destinations for people to go easily from place to place.
01. 130th Sonata
THE CHARACTER OF SONATA The district fragments of civic spaces define different character along N 130th Street just like a sonata, which is a continuous composition with different characters and tempos in each movement. Spatially along N 130th Street, each movement has its own theme. People can participate in different activities along this Sonata, so they will not feel bored or unsafe on N 130th Street.

THE SONATA STREET N 130th street is composed of four key movements between Bitter Lake and Aurora Avenue on the west and Northacres Park and the Light Rail Station on the East. It is designed as a safe route for pedestrians and bicyclists interspersed with green infrastructure that link with particular civic features. Based on the theme and character along the street, N 130th Street shows different appearances on each movement.

Connection and Landing in Seattle Waterfront 2014 Fall Quarter Blue Urbanism Studio Location: Seattle Waterfront Team Work Responsibility: concept, plan and perspective renderings
The proposed Blue Urbanism project encompasses the area located at the north end of both sides of Alaskan Way. The site is bordered by the Olympic Sculpture Park and Broad Street on the north and Clay Street on the south. The site on Elliott Bay lies adjacent to downtown Seattle and is within close proximity to popular attractions such as Pike Place Market, Seattle Aquarium and cruise ship ports. There are no activities or attractions for the public at the area. The location offers a myriad of opportunities for providing public accessibility, improving spatial connections and activating the space. Traffic away from the pedestrian areas enhances safety. A promenade with good design and detailing will include areas for food trucks, a variety of outdoor cafes, play and exercise areas to attract users. Artful lighting will be utilized to provide safety for users at night. A lookout at Pier 70 will provide panoramic views of the Puget Sound and the tidal area will offer opportunities to view salt marsh habitat.

There is congestion between automobile, bike, and pedestrian traffic. We propose improving connections by eliminating two car lanes, increasing size of the promenade, providing a commuter and recreational bike lanes, and making an axial connection to the waterfront from Broad Street. The promenade, wave deck, and end point are the three main landings. Various urban play such as water features and playgrounds animate the promenade. The wave deck and end point change levels as the tide levels change facilitating an enjoyable experience for visitors.

Contextual Analysis for the Community of Claverito 04
Iquitos, Peru 2015 Summer Independent Studies Location: Cavorito, Iquitos, Peru Independent Work
Iquitos is the fifth most populous city of Peru and is the largest metropolis in the Peruvian Amazon with over 0.5 million inhabitants. The city stands at the entrance to the Amazon river, connecting the Amazonian wilderness and human civilization. It is accessible only by air or water, having no roads out. The jungle-locked city bears a heavy population pressure and 53% live in poverty. Slum communities are built on stilts floating on the river without access to a clean water system and well-organized drainage. Water access, poor sanitation, and hygiene problems are issues related to slum conditions. Moreover, climate conditions also aggravate the area. People in Iquitos are exposed to Dengue Fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection, which is prevalent in tropical areas and many other tropical diseases. Therefore, public health becomes a complex issue in slum communities. It is important to study slum communities not only because of the need to improve the living environment of the communities, but also the concern of global sustainability—the relationship between human and ecosystem wellbeing. The Amazon rainforest is one of the most important resources in the world, and has a rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. It also plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate. However, few people know that the Amazon undergoes urban development with 34 million people living in cities in the Amazon, and there is relatively few research studies on landscape architecture in tropical areas. Since local communities are the first to face the direct consequences of climate change, we should consider sustainability while designing and planning.
5th largest city in Peru (over 0.5 million documented residents )
Nap time from 1pm-4pm
Thus, this project focuses on the key question: Under the notion of sustainability and concern for human and natural ecosystems, what can landscape architects do to improve the living environment of neglected community in the tropical areas? The research analysis the Community of Claverito, located in Iquitos, and evaluates the design constraints and opportunities in neglected community for supporting further project development.
Tourism is one of the most vital industries here. Tourists come here to enter the Jungle.

Problems
Climate Change + flooding
Unclean water
Disease
People in the community build their houses on rafts and stilts floating on the river. However, water level changes really quickly. Even between two visits to this community, water level changes were obvious. Also, the Amazon River Floods every Year. That means the community needs to build their houses everytime after the flood comes. They also need to rebuild the access that connects to their houses. In addition, The community will lost their public space for playing soccer or volleyball in wet season.
People of the community highly rely on water— they live above the water, commute via water transportation, wash their clothes through holes in the floors or beside their raft shanties, discharge wastewater directly into the river, and obtain water directly from the Itaya River. Although they have plenty of water resources, they do not have access to running water or clean water, not to mentioning water resource management. As a result, obtaining potable water is a major problem here.
The dirty water also leads to sanitation problems. Cholera and Diarrhea are some examples of diseases that thrive in areas of poor sanitation and can cause serious harm or even death to their victims. Limited access to safe water is the fundamental factor. Apart from waterborne diseases, the area is also under the threat of dengue, a mosquitoborne disease. According to WHO analysis, dengue flourishes in urban poor areas, suburbs and the countryside but also affects more affluent neighborhoods in tropical and subtropical countries. The community of Claverito is located in a tropical area and has poor hygiene, and environmental conditions so people are subject to a high risk of dengue.

FLOATING COMMUNITY RESPONDING TO FLOODS 2016 SUMMER D3 Competition Site: Community of Claverito, Iquitos, Peru Responsibility: Renderings, Concept Development
Community of Claverito is a floating community located at the edge of Iquitos, the fifth largest city in Peru. The community is facing serious problems of global warming and Amazon River annual flooding. People in this community need to rebuild their infrastructure every year to correspond to the flood. Moreover, they are losing their public space during every flood season. In the meanwhile, it’s hard for them to access to clean water from the river and the city.

Concept
Aquatic Vascular bundle Structure
The goal of this project is to improve the living environment for the community by proposing different type of infrastructure units in a modular and easy way. We try to enlightened the community by giving them great chance to learn a more sustainable way of building their own settlement, and also some programs that could produce products such as the fishing farm and floating farm. What’s more, the infrastructures will not only serve as utilities but also social, economic anad ecology facilitator widen the pathway and attach programs on it make the normal pathway a perfect place for communication and production; the green belt being created in between the main pathway will serve as water purification region for the community using the local plant “Putu Putu.

People in Yunlin suffered from Land Subsidence seriously due to the global warming issue for couple of years. Instead of fighting to the environment, we tried to find a solution to overcome this situation and live with water. Whether flooding or not, people will have a peaceful living.
The site is located at Mailiao and Taisi, Yunlin. These two cities belong to ocean culture living area.
This reclaimed land is a natural alluvial wetland. There are many windbreaks and precious inter-tidal. Also, it is a good bird watching area
After reclamation, the government plan to use it as reservoir for fish farming. Marine product are the main source of income.

In the Interbay area of Seattle, the industrial landscape is reclaimed over time. The water rises from the south returning Smith cove to its historical estuary condition. A decision is made on the part of the neighborhood and the city to accommodate this change and adapt the area as an urban ecological district, where the residents can live in and engage with the new natural conditions, as opposed to establishing the area as a traditional urban park. As sea levels rise and the water within Interbay becomes more prominent public and private uses of the water become increasingly relevant.

Tikvah was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2011. The following year she went through remission but then was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2012. She died on September 24, 2014. In this garden, we create a special space for residents and visitors for gathering. The three layers divide the park into public, semi-public and private areas which includes a rain garden, seating area and recreation deck. The colorful rain garden with a diversity of plants attract people to come, stay and communicate here.
RAIN GARDEN DESIGN 12
PYUNG AN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Lotus Landscape Design LLC 2017 March- September Site: Auburn, WA Medium: AutoCad, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
This project focuses on rainwater design to reduce the stormwater volume. I participated in the design process to build process at the end. We want to create a garden which is not only functionally gathering rainwater but also provide a better social gathering place for church members. In the first phase, I recorded all the downspouts and calculated the rainwater volume and decide size for the rain garden. In the second phase, I focused on church entry area and also provide a set of construction documents to represent the details such as the grading section, layout, and plant selections for the rain garden. After the rain garden was built, I also provide maintenance guidelines and checklists for church members to take care of the garden regularly.

MENG RESIDENCE DREAM GARDEN Gardens grow from dreams and this one is no exception. The owner has always wanted a private & colorful English-style garden to complete her home. An elegant white curve trellis archway welcomes you to the beautiful, circular center of the garden itself, The curves and rounded edges of the garden combined with the relaxing sound of the fountain’s trickle and the view of the distant lake provide a sense of real tranquility — a dream come true.

Graduation book & Student Department Magazine I am also interested in graphic design so I joined department magazine and graduation book editor group. We published two magazines in 2012, mainly discussed what we learn from school, internship, and travel. We hope these experiences and articles will inspire future students who are interested in Landscape Architecture. Three of us continued to work on our graduation book which collected all our graduation projects and sort all projects to 5 different subjects, which convey different strategies we use in built environment designs.
