I mean, why wouldn’t you, right? In putting together our creative edit around Pantone’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz (p200), I stumbled across this outrageously gorgeous and fantastical bath from Maison Valentina.
Accurately described as “an outstanding moment of design inspiration”, the Newton bathtub showcases a curved-lip shape designed for relaxing in comfort.
Its cast-iron construction ensures a heavy-duty structure that will stand the test of time, while the high-gloss lacquered spheres dotting the exterior make it a sculptural standout that guarantees it will be the centrepiece of any master bathroom!
An enchanting blend of whimsy and quality, the Newton is a reminder that high-end doesn’t have to be stuff y, and bathrooms can be places of fun as much as function. maisonvalentina.net

Due to the increasing popularity of the open-plan living layouts prevalent in homes today, lighting in areas such as the kitchen are becoming much more design-centric, requiring an aesthetically pleasing lighting scheme to enhance the cohesive style of a home’s interior. To that end, we’ve taken a liking to the Fjord Pendant from Beacon Lighting. Inspired by nature, the Fjord is formed from gypsum and concrete into an elliptical arrangement with gently fl owing curves. Its silky, earthen surface gives it a luxurious yet subtle texture that appeals to the senses. beaconlighting.com.au
The Caesarstone ® Porcelain collection signi fi es a leap in technology, functionality and design in the surfaces arena. From kitchen islands to splashbacks and bathroom countertops, Caesarstone ® ’s Porcelain range will provide non-porous, scratch, stain and heat resistant performance in an environmentally friendly, easy-to-clean package. One of our favourites is the Libretta porcelain. Mid-century modern kitchens have staged a vibrant comeback in Australian homes, blending nostalgia with contemporary design sensibilities. Originating in the post-WWII era of the 1940s to 1960s, these kitchens re fl ect a distinct aesthetic characterised by clean lines, minimalist forms, organic or geometric shapes and pops of bright, bold colour.
Australian homes have embraced the openplan layout that mid-century modern kitchens championed, creating roomy and inviting spaces. Large windows and glass doors blur the boundaries between inside and out, allowing natural light to flood the room and connect the kitchen with the surrounding landscape.
Moreover, mid-century modern kitchens in Australia celebrate craftsmanship and quality materials. From iconic designer furniture pieces to bespoke joinery, every element is curated to enhance both form and function. This attention to detail extends to lighting choices, often featuring iconic pendant lamps or recessed lighting that adds warmth and ambience to the space.
The design team at SpaceCraft Joinery in Adelaide have positioned themselves as pros in this period style. Their work was a highlight of the 2024 KBDi Design Awards program, and we’re sharing three of our favourite midcentury modern makeovers.

SARAH KATSAROS | SPACECRAFT JOINERY
Designer Sarah Katsaros embraced the mid-century modern design of her client’s muchloved home, creating a minimalist design with maximum appeal. Sarah chose a warm blackwood timber veneer as the hero material, with meticulously crafted blackwood timber wave handles serving as an iconic nod to the mid-century era. A striking Zellige tile splashback adds a handmade appeal to the space, and the colour variations add interest and cohesion to the adjoining areas of the home.
JESSIE STEVENS | SPACECRAFT JOINERY
bre tarca ckd au
Glass display cabinets are a well-recognised feature of the mid-century era, serving a practical purpose and offering an aesthetic edge. Jessie Stevens designed the clear cathedral glass-fronted cabinet to provide privacy (with the separation of the kitchen and dining spaces) without compromising the natural light that pools into the space. Blackwood veneer is again the primary cabinetry colour, but the striking Pillar Box Red is the hero. A geometric pattern subtly appears in the splashback, and charcoal details add depth and contrast.
BRE TARCA CKD AU | SPACECRAFT JOINERY
The family occupying this Coromandel Valley home are vibrant and fun, and they sought a kitchen design to match. KBDi accredited designer Bre Tarca delivered, replacing her clients’ pokey plain-white kitchen with a vibrant new space to play. She injected the mid-century modern-inspired design with fabulous eclectic styling to create a bold and joyful vibe. The dynamic Kiwi green is balanced with the warm tones of timber, while vibrant orange, peach and yellow tiles add a geometric stamp to this fun- fi lled space.
A NEW KITCHEN IS A BIG INVESTMENT, AND YOUR NEW SPACE SHOULD BE AS
A kitchen design professional will help you make the best decisions from the beginning, saving you time and heartache in the long run. They’ll consider:
Positioning: what are the rooms adjoining the kitchen? From which direction will the kitchen be entered and exited?
Access and safety: will access to an under bench oven be tricky? Will overhead cupboards be within reach?
Cooking styles: are most meals prepared on the stovetop, baked in the oven or reheated in the microwave or steam oven?
Storage requirements: is shopping done in bulk? Will a new fridge be required now, or should it be allowed for in the future?
Budget: will the kitchen investment be in line with the value of the home?
KBDi Members are committed to their profession, and know all the right questions to ask to get you the kitchen of your dreams. Learn more about our nation-wide membership at kbdi.org.au.

QLD DESIGNER PROFILE
Introducing Alan Schull, the man behind Kitchen Shop QLD on the Sunshine Coast. Alan began as a cabinetmaker after leaving school and has since clocked up a milestone of 50 years within the industry. Following in his footsteps, Alan’s son also has many years of experience as a cabinetmaker and designer.
Established in 2000, the family business was built on traditional values and business ethics. Many of its customers in the early days were taken aback by the company’s swift response times and its ability to listen to and e ff ectively meet a brief – all of which hasn’t changed in 24 years. This quality service and consistency throughout the years can be attributed to Kitchen Shop QLD’s wonderful reputation, along with its growing accolades and client base.
“Receiving honest advice, backed by experience and knowledge for every question asked, was – and still is – the most relieving part of any client’s quest for the right company to carry out works within their home,” explains Alan.
Kitchen Shop QLD has built an amazing partnership with a select group of trade contractors who help to create and complete full kitchen and bathroom renovations in the most friendly, efficient and professional manner. When asked about current trends and styles, Alan says Shaker cabinets and Hamptons style are still the most popular, as well as requests for handleless designs. When it comes to benchtops, the new crystalline silica-free stone-look tops will soon become the norm, although natural stone such as granite and quartzite have been a longtime favourite of Alan’s.
Kitchen Shop QLD’s ethos is to keep things simple – to do the best they can and keep their clients informed and satis fi ed with the process from start to end.

When it came to the redesign of a townhouse for an owner with accessibility needs, the request was for greater ease of use and more space and storage.
The original U-shaped footprint of the small kitchen was retained, so the under-stairs area was chosen to allow for more storage in the room. This meant the bench could be increased in size, with curved edges ensuring there were no sharp corners to bump into.
A sensor tap was installed for ease of use, and Lo & Co pull handles with a hatched finish were chosen. The higher cupboards are electric so that the owner can simply press a button within reach to close them. The Ne ff oven has a fully retractable door to save on space, with all-push button operation for ease of use.
The peninsular bench was designed with half-round battens, along with a custom bespoke rangehood also with blackened bronze that fully encloses the rangehood to make it easier to clean. Two custom American oak timber fl oating shelves are not only functional, but also serve to warm up the space.
The townhouse’s bathroom also needed to have accessibility considerations and fl exible options for washing and lighting. A small half-height wall was added for a toilet, and the shower now has a hinged moveable shower screen with fl uted glass for some privacy.
A handheld shower was added for extra accessibility, and a disabled rail installed for stability. A fl oor-mounted bath mixer with hand shower was also selected to help wash the kids’ hair in
the bath and to help clean the tub itself. The bathroom now has plenty of storage, with simple access into drawers and an in-wall shaving cabinet to keep everyday items within reach. User-friendly tapware was chosen to best suit the homeowner’s needs. Full-height tiling makes cleaning easy, while the patterned fl oor tile adds interest and hides hair and dirt. A black high-gloss handmade tile with a black quarter-round strip tile on top adds a sophisticated fi nish.
For the design of the powder room, the toilet was brought forward and a ledge was created to display items of interest. A hero-coloured basin catches the eye while the tiles add liberal dashes of charm to the space.
The Mark Douglass pendant light draws attention higher up to its handblown shape. Simple downlights also illuminate the space and can be switched on separately for the right lighting to suit the time of day.
The quirky Merci Maison Alexia mirror is hand-forged iron – a unique piece that adds fun to the powder room while relating back to the black in the floor tile.
All the various textures, patterns, fi nishes and colour are designed to uplift and make the viewer smile. As the homeowner loves autumnal colours, these earthy tones were picked to be used throughout the property, which was styled by Bea Lambos from Bea & Co.

A bathroom that was no longer fi t for purpose needed an overhaul but had to fi t within the compact con fines of the existing space. As one of the family’s children needs additional support, having enough room for a carer to help them with their daily hygiene routines was crucial. While the room size couldn’t change, additional space was created by removing the previously outgrown bath and hob. Removing these, and the corner shower, improved the ergonomics of the space, and provided provision for wheelchair access if needed. Better accessibility and light fl ow were also created by widening the doorway and installing an easily maintainable soft-close barn door.
The inclusion of an intelligent toilet enables the disabled user to utilise it
independently. Under- fl oor heating provides improved air quality and comfort. The ceiling exhaust fan ensures superior removal of condensation, while a natural cross fl ow of air is achieved through the existing awning window.
Ample storage was created via a generous recessed wall cabinet and 1-metre wide drawers in the vanity.
A ledge wall provides shelf storage for toiletries and potted greenery, and the tiled window ledge also doubles as a shelf.
Warm LED sensor lighting under the vanity and mirror cabinet creates a calming ambience, while task lighting is provided via ceiling downlights when needed.

Faced with a narrow and tight kitchen space, this busy young family needed a kitchen that would better suit their lifestyle and make preparing meals easier.
A multifunctional haven that seamlessly integrates practicality with innovative design is the result. Ample storage solutions and the incorporation of coat and shoe storage (for the kitchen’s dual role as an entryway from the carport) helps to meet the family’s needs within the constraints of the limited space. By carefully considering every detail and maximising the use of available room, a culinary zone was crafted to not only suit everyday needs, but also enhance the family’s daily experiences. From homework sessions to family gatherings, this kitchen now serves as the heart of the home – a versatile and welcoming spot that re fl ects the client’s desire for both practicality and originality.

The ensuite of this beachside Eastern Suburbs home required a modern upgrade to transform it into a timeless space. Better use of the room was also needed, as well as practical solutions (such as a minimal grout approach) for a clean, streamlined look and to reduce future cleaning e ff orts.
Clever thinking inspired the shift of the vanity, which was rotated 90 degrees to e ff ectively address the challenge of an awkwardly slanted wall. A new wall was introduced behind the new vanity, extending into the shower area. This strategic addition not only resolved the dilemma posed by the slanted wall, but also carved out room for a recessed overhead cabinet and a shower niche.
By further enhancing the layout, a carefully positioned wall now delineates the vanity and shower areas. This division allowed for the installation of a spacious, custom-designed, wall-to-wall vanity alongside a matching overhead cabinet, signi fi cantly boosting the room’s storage capacity.
Modern touches were infused into the space by replacing the old window and trading traditional cornices for a square-set ceiling, achieving a timeless elegance and a sleeker look.
The choice of large-format, marblelook porcelain tiles plays a pivotal role in the bathroom’s luxurious ambience. Adding a layer of depth and interest, the vanity splashback features marble hexagon tiles. The benchtop, crafted from Corian in Venaro White, boasts subtle, wavy patterns that complement the marble-look porcelain’s lighter tones, creating a cohesive aesthetic.
The newly designed bathroom merges functionality with luxury, presenting a modern, sophisticated space.

Ensuring this 20-year-old bathroom was accessible for the ageing owners was the main consideration for this renovation. To keep the project within budget and working within the space constraints, the decision was made to keep the layout the same but make minor modi fi cations instead.
To improve accessibility to the shower, an open access style with no door and a nib wall with a screen above was added. The nib wall can also accommodate a solid placement for a grab rail and toilet roll holder. A hand shower on a variance grab rail and additional grab rails make the shower as safe as possible.
The toilet chosen was a back-to-wall style with a back inlet and raised height
to meet the need for a taller toilet that would still look neat. The custom cabinetry has been designed with large drawers and two face-level cupboards. The drawers and wall cabinets have been made symmetrical to bring more balance to the space.
A neutral, warm grey colour scheme was selected, with the fl oor a stone colour. The wall tiles offer a little movement with a white base and grey vein, while the cabinetry fronts add a focus point with a bolder linear grain and a simple white benchtop. PERTH TLC GROUP tlc-perth.com

An easily accessible kitchen was a must for an elderly client, who didn’t like the open-plan nature of the area allowing views of the cooking zone when she was in the living room.
Rather than closing off the kitchen by adding a wall, the decision was made to design the cooktop space to be fully enclosed behind a pocket door and wing line system. The existing gas cooktop was changed to induction and installed on a black porcelain benchtop to achieve a seamless look and allow for additional bench space. The cooking zone now doubles as an appliance area that can be closed off from the living area when not in use.
The oven and microwave were designed to sit behind a door that can
be opened when the appliances are in use. A bulkhead was installed to reduce the opportunity for clutter to accumulate.
The client’s favourite colour is green, so Polytec Venette Botanic was selected for the joinery. The Venette fi nish’s fi ngerprint-resistant technology helps keep the space clean and aids accessibility, with no handles needed. Calacatta Verde marble was chosen for both the benchtop and splashback.
A pull-out table was also added so the client can enjoy her meals in front of the window’s city view.

A Melbourne-based boutique interior design studio, YDM Design Studio specialises in considered residential renovations. At the helm is founder and principal designer Nina Di Marco. Taking a professional and personalised approach to interior design, Nina works in collaboration with homeowners to bring their vision to life. YDM’s Bonbeach project is the perfect example.
This was the client’s forever home, so there needed to be provisions for the future, which included installing a lift between the two fl oors. The lift needed to cut into a small area of the existing kitchen, so the brief called for the new kitchen to be designed around the lift, ensuring the space was still practical, functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The kitchen joinery was redesigned from the previous gallery layout into an L-shape with an island. The island bench was maximised by adding extra joinery below the overhang for infrequently used items, as well as open shelves and a cupboard on the sides. A bar and appliance cupboard were added, creating a more functional and lesscluttered kitchen.
Polytec Notaio Walnut was used in all the joinery to add warmth and texture. This was paired with Quantum Quartz-Statuario Quartz for contrast and Meir Champagne tapware to tie into the warm hues. Soothing green tones were also used throughout the home, appearing in the splashback and feature wall within the kitchen.
For the bathroom, additional width from the powder room relocation allowed an upgrade to a double shower. The new length of the powder room also created the perfect spot for the toilet; one with an in-wall cistern was selected to occupy minimal space. The removal of the bath created space for a doublebasin vanity. To maximise storage, there is a shaving cabinet above each basin with a feature light between. For a night light, a sensor-activated LED strip was added to the bottom of the vanity.
As in the kitchen, Polytec Notaio Walnut was used for the vanity joinery, paired with Quantum Quartz-Statuario Quartz and Meir Champagne tapware.

In this 1970s apartment, the kitchen was compact, making e ffi cient use of space crucial. A dishwasher 450mm in width was selected to fi t the limited space, and with a single undermount sink installed, there remained su ffi cient bench space for other appliances.
The client opted for a Bora downdraft rangehood/cooktop to avoid overhead cabinets, preserving the kitchen’s open feel and emphasizing the custom solid timber oak plate rack. A Polytec Steccawood feature panel in Prime Oak was installed beside the fridge cabinet, matching the fi nger grip rails and tray dividers above the fridge. For the rest of the cabinetry, Polytec Topiary in a smooth finish was chosen.
The splashback features a classic glosswhite subway tile with a handmade edge to add texture. Task lighting is provided by a streamlined wall light that accentuates the tile’s texture, complemented by LED strip lighting under the fl oating shelf.
The renovation of the four-storey terrace home’s kitchen aimed to transform the cramped and outdated space into a modern, inviting area. By recon fi guring the layout, access to the pantry was created between an existing service duct and repurposed space within the existing bathroom.
To update the kitchen while harmonising with the existing fl ooring, a colour scheme of clean warm whites, warm stained oak veneer matching the existing furniture, and crisp Marmo Oro stone with a gold sun band infusion was chosen. This combination provided a
contemporary look that retained a welcoming feel.
Black feature finger rails and handles were incorporated to add a sleek, modern touch. A navy feature cooker served as a striking focal point, integrating navy accents throughout the home for a cohesive design.
RENOVATION
A Federation house bathroom in Perth for a busy professional couple and their two sons needed a big change. While there was discussion around the need for a di ff erent layout, the fi nal design stays with the original footprint of the bathroom.
The project required blending the old architectural style with modern functionality. Retaining the Federation architectural features was key, while the clients’ need for easy maintenance led to the use of large-format tiles to minimise grout lines and a unique multi-textured tile to enhance the aesthetic.
An additional challenge was the inadequately lit hall outside the bathroom, a critical thoroughfare to the
modern extension. By incorporating borrowed light from the bathroom through a fanlight design, this allowed natural lighting into the hall during the day, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
Sustainability was also a signi fi cant focus, so eco-friendly fi xtures like lowfl ush toilets and low- fl ow, aerated taps to emphasise e ffi ciency were selected. The result is a harmonious blend of custom elements and practical considerations, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality, ultimately exceeding the clients’ expectations.

Transforming an apartment’s small, onewindow kitchen with minimal cabinetry and little space into a bespoke solution for a forever home was the mission.
With functionality and practicality at the forefront, fl oor-to-ceiling cabinetry was fi tted to allow for maximum storage and to better utilise space. The generously sized pantry storage compartments house the integrated refrigerator and an appliance garage with pocket doors for a bespoke fi nish.
Curved features were incorporated as well as under lighting in the island to add a softer touch to the space. Polytec Florentine Walnut joinery was used in conjunction with the Steccawood as a feature for the island, rangehood and custom under-window bench. Silestone Blanco Norte was selected for the
stone benchtops, and a statement Abey Artisan Copper- finish tap matches the pendant light.
Removing the room’s outdated arches helped to create a more open lifestyle and contemporary space. The left arch was then redesigned by extending the curve up to the ceiling, creating an e ffect that adds a unique architectural touch.
By opening up the walls and using elements that brightened the space and fl owed into the apartment’s lifestyle area, the kitchen is warm and inviting, with an airy atmosphere which emanates throughout the home.

A Bondi apartment’s kitchen has gone from drab to fab, transformed into a light- fi lled space perfect for the young couple owners. They wanted a kitchen that would not only be functional and suit their everyday needs, but which would be admired during entertaining.
Space was tight so functionality was key. A striking island design with drawer storage underneath provided a perfect solution to the open-plan entertaining space. The island’s curves, an inspired choice, prevent the large piece of furniture from dominating the small space.
With natural materials and a soothing colour palette, the aesthetic perfectly matches its beachside setting. Elevated joinery with Herringbone flooring and a coordinated colour kitchen palette and marble benches creates a sophisticated feel. Natural stone was chosen to provide both design aesthetic and convenience. The choice of Super White dolomite added an exquisite white colouring infused with wisps of grey veining – a stunning contrast to the Herringbone timber fl oor. LED strip lighting throughout under-wall cabinets and the underside of the island creates
ambience lighting, along with task lights. A slimline pull-out pantry was a perfect solution to the very tight space and allows for ample storage.
Over in Putney, the vision for a dated home’s kitchen was Bali, where the owners enjoyed holidaying. The addition of a curved stone wall at the front of the house was the inspiration for the curved features that flow throughout the home and kitchen area.
A cool, contemporary facelift brought modern living to this once “ugly duckling”. The use of earthy materials like timber grain and natural stone speak to these island holidays, while the open-plan design makes the most of amazing Sydney Harbour views and pool area.
A butler’s pantry was added for appliances, food storage and food preparation and includes a scullery for dirty dishes and mess when entertaining.
Curves contributed elegance and grace, adding a twist of interest to this modern interior. Integrated appliances were selected for seamless design, and Blum SERVO-DRIVE cabinets and bins provide the ultimate in convenience.

This modern Hamptons kitchen design sought to harmoniously blend elegance with contemporary functionality. The result is a space that is both timeless and sophisticated.
The design is characterised by clean lines, re fi ned simplicity and a palette of soft, neutral tones. Shaker-style cabinets in a light, airy hue provide a sense of warmth and familiarity, while subtle detailing and sleek hardware add a touch of modern sophistication.
Drawing inspiration from the coastal environment of the Hamptons, the design prioritises natural light and openness with strategically placed windows and statement rangehood canopy. A classic marble-style bench and splashback as the pattern variation adds texture and visual interest to the kitchen.
The selection of natural materials, such as wide-plank hardwood fl ooring and quartz countertops with marble-like veining, imbues the space with a sense of luxury and timelessness.
Thoughtfully integrated storage solutions ensure every centimetre of the kitchen is utilised e ffi ciently, while high-end stainless-steel appliances with advanced features elevate both form and function.
In the laundry, the design aimed to create a stylish and e ffi cient space that seamlessly integrates timber grain wall cabinets with white fl oor cabinets for warmth and sleek sophistication. Timber grain wall cabinets exude warmth and texture, while white and off -white fl oor cabinets provide a clean and contemporary backdrop, ensuring ease of access and organisation.
The focal point of the laundry space is the raised, side-by-side washing machine and dryer, positioned at a convenient height for e ffortless loading and unloading. This design feature not only enhances accessibility, but also serves as a visual anchor, optimising work fl ow and e ffi ciency.
Light-coloured engineered stone countertops further elevate the aesthetic, offering durability and functionality while complementing the overall design palette.
Practicality meets style with the inclusion of porcelain tiles, which were selected for their resilience and lowmaintenance requirements.

In a renovated Queenslander, an impractical kitchen that was looking dated needed a fresh new look, and had to be better suited to its owners who love to entertain. The walk-in pantry was transformed into a cooking alcove, with a second cleaning alcove placed on the adjacent wall.
The kitchen’s storage was tripled thanks to three-stack purpose-built drawers. A second wine fridge was added adjacent to the bifold doors leading to the barbecue area, and a cocktail station is neatly tucked away behind pocket doors. A fresh blue and green colour palette was chosen for the kitchen, contrasting with the black and brass accents.
At an inner-city penthouse, the main bathroom was created by combining the existing bathroom, powder room, laundry cupboard and hallway into the
one room. A mix of large-format and metallic mosaic tiles were selected to complement the striking epoxy floor and bounce light around the room.
The shower over the bath was replaced with a modern walk-in shower. Motion sensors allowed for a night light under the vanity, and for both a light and fan to be automatically turned on when someone enters the shower. Heated vertical towel rails utilised the available wall space and provided a practical drying solution.
The third project, a New Farm Art Deco apartment’s bathroom, also had a revamp, with a muted, natural palette and light-timber cabinetry chosen to give it a natural look and feel.

A retired couple who had raised a large family wanted their new kitchen to honour their past and embrace their future. The outer-suburban property was subdivided, so the design response carefully balanced form, function and an aesthetic reference to the history of the site and its connection to the family.
Echoing the leafy surroundings, natural materials – primarily wood, ceramic and stone – were selected. Timbers were placed on the ceiling and cabinetry, with stone and tile chosen for the splashback and benchtop. Cool naturalistic tones in green and blue were placed centrally on the splashback and picked up in the benchtop and fl oor particulate.
Counterbalancing the cool tones, warm walnut panelling was introduced for the cabinetry and ceiling – this served a dual function by creating a canopy, nestling the kitchen beneath.
The cabinetry door detailing, statement concrete fl oor and doublesided bookshelf lend a retro feel to the kitchen, with modern-style tapware, appliances and lighting balancing the look.
The space was laid out for ease of use, fl owing through cooking, cleaning and preparatory zones. Ergonomic principles are re fl ected in the stacked ovens and storage and complemented by an expansive island bench that the entire family can fi t around.
The finished result is an inviting, modern yet classic kitchen which is just as suited to preparing a meal, gathering the family together or throwing a party and celebrating in style.

The kitchen design for a Maleny farmhouse renovation perfectly blends historic charm with modern functionality. Embracing the home’s century-old heritage, the English farmhouse and cottage-style theme permeates throughout.
The butler’s pantry boasts elegant features such as glass-fronted display cabinets, a fl uted front apron sink, Tasmanian oak accents and an integrated dishwasher and bar fridge. In the main kitchen, the farmer’s doors joinery continues, adding that traditional workmanship to complement the history of the original home.
In the Gap, a modern family bathroom with a practical space plan for all needs was created. The shower is an easy walk in for all users and the bath is practical for the kids to be bathed in, but just as good for a luxurious soak.
The vanity, visible from the bathroom entry, has a lovely timber grain and warm tones, welcoming you into the space. The bathroom’s chosen colour scheme is timeless, with a warm grey fl oor and white walls.
The ensuite design concept utilised the space of the hallway linen cupboard, which provided extra depth for the shower to be enlarged to a two-person capacity. The design of the curved shower wall hides the toilet from view without compromising on style.
The design includes two sinks, a large drawer space for each, plus inbuilt shaving cabinet mirrors to provide extra storage. The curve of the shower wall is also replicated in the curve of the opposite wall to the shower, softening the existing 45-degree angle of the wall. The introduction of the curves added wow factor, dimension and versatility.

Maintaining the kitchen’s practicality while capturing the essence of the rainforest setting it is located near was the brief for this unique new build.
The kitchen’s walls and island bench feature natural timber cladding, lending that natural aesthetic to the space, while the design of the island bench draws inspiration from the shapes and hues found in trees. Just like the rings, layers, trunk and green top of a tree, the island bench is layered with stained timber and topped with a green Silestone surface.

To harmonise the kitchen’s scale with the rest of the house, an opening above the cooktop was created, providing a view into the butler’s pantry. An integrated fridge/freezer is located between the kitchen and pantry. A dry ager and wine fridge has also been added, re fl ecting the clients’ passion for fi ne dining. The curved fl oor design was extended to the glass
wall of the whisky room, highlighting the display beautifully.
In the master suite, the natural aesthetic was also incorporated in the design. The bedroom features expansive windows offering unobstructed views of the surrounding parkland, so hanging plants now enhance the nature theme. Additionally, natural timber wall cladding in a deep ebony hue has been installed.
Green bathroom fi xtures, hints of copper fi xtures and a combination of matt and gloss white rectangle tiles sit alongside the neutral wall palette, deliberately chosen to allow the green and copper elements to shine. A planter box was crafted to serve as a partition, separating the bed area from the retreat space.

A need for the homeowner to feel safe and have ease of movement in their kitchen was the mission for this renovation. The homeowner lives with a disability and required an accessible kitchen that enables independent living but one that wasn’t lacking in style. Balancing functionality and aesthetics, the result is a space that not only meets practical needs, but also uplifts spirits and enhances quality of life.
The kitchen layout was designed to optimise work fl ow and reduce the need for excessive reaching with strategic placement of key elements like the sink, cooktop and refrigerator. Accessibility was achieved by installing lower countertops and wider
pathways to accommodate mobility aids. Easily accessible cabinets were also an important addition.
Adaptive equipment, such as the mobile island bench, pull-out shelves and sensoractivated rangehood and faucet, merge seamlessly with the design. Slip-resistant fl ooring, soft-edge countertop edges and generous set-down areas prioritise safety.
Contrasting colours, timber grains and lightstone benchtops offer a contemporary look to the kitchen.

This Queenslander home has had several renovations and it was now time for the main bathroom to shine. Having an aesthetically pleasing view into the bathroom when the door is open (as this is seen immediately upon entering the home) was an important consideration, as well as making the space appealing to visitors.
To create the feeling of a powder room, a dividing wall was used to separate the vanity and toilet from the wet area. Vinyl wallpaper was also used to zone the space and give it wow factor. The view from the front door of the home is now of the timber veneer vanity unit and green feature tiled
partition wall, not of the toilet.
The shower side of the partition wall has a storage niche, the shower mixer and a hook for easy access to a towel when in the shower. The wall and niche size were determined by tile sizes to limit cuts and result in a neater fi nish.
The generous hidden bathroom zone is well ventilated by the window and exhaust fan. Maximising air fl ow in the space has been achieved by installing a louvre window with frosted glass blades for privacy.
The partition wall has been built no higher than required so that light from the window can reach the whole room. The tiled wall ledge visually breaks up
the full wall of neutral tile, overlapping both zones and providing a connection between the two.
Wall tiles are gloss, helping to re fl ect light throughout the space. Matt porcelain fl oor tiles with a stonelook organic style were used with the green tiles, varying in shade to create a country/coastal aesthetic. This look extends to the oak timber veneer on the vanity unit and handmade ceramic basin.

With a small, dark and cramped existing laundry, principal designer, Verona from Avid Interior Design saw an opportunity to reconfigure the layout of the home to create a new laundry that would be spacious, light-filled and cater to the needs of a busy family with teens.
The home’s north-west facing spare room was an ideal location for the new laundry. With a glass sliding door offering natural light, ventilation and access to a side deck for additional drying space, it was the perfect solution. The entry was moved to the centre of the room to accommodate a sliding door so cabinetry could be installed on both sides. The cabinetry was designed to provide ample storage space around the appliances, with overhead cupboards built up to the raked ceiling and the inclusion of a hanging rail overhead for more drying space when needed.
With the garage and back door of the property located right next to the new laundry, incorporating a small mudroom space at the entry of the room, with bench seat, hooks for hats and bags, shoe storage and clothes hamper, has created a much-needed space for keeping school and sporting gear neatly organised and hidden away.
The inclusion of an LED strip light into the overhead shelf of the bench seat acts as a subtle night light to keep the storage areas visible when needed late at night. There’s even a charging station for phones and laptops conveniently located in a drawer. The result has been a gamechanger for the family, with everyone feeling catered for in the new space.

From Sub-Zero designer fridges to multi-tasking ovens and Swiss-crafted dishwashers, the kitchen is fast becoming the technological hub of every Australian home as large kitchen appliances blend innovation and convenience
Often considered the heart of the home, kitchens have evolved from a hidden nook into a multi-functional area –part cooking, part impromptu entertainment, and part storage space for pots, pans and household food essentials. As technology has grown, so has its in fl uence on large kitchen appliances.
Nowadays, manufacturers are truly pushing the boundaries of what large kitchen appliances are capable of – combining creativity and innovation to the point where these products transform kitchen duties into an experience rather than a daily chore.
On one hand, it’s an exciting era to witness. But it can also be overwhelming for some, especially those building new homes and planning kitchen designs from scratch. Large kitchen appliances are an investment; depending on brand, model, features and budget, most can cost upwards of fi ve fi gures minimum.
Karl Mellington, product expert at Winnings, says there are four main aspects to consider when investing in large kitchen appliances.
“The first is household size as this will a ffect the size of the large appliances you choose. Second is the aesthetic of your home and kitchen. Then, think about what you like to cook and how often you entertain. Lastly, consider the accessibility of your home and whether these large appliances can fi t through your front door,” he says. “Most customers will start by choosing their fridge fi rst, which is largely dependent on the household size. Then they move into their cooking appliances, such as the oven and cooktop. From there, these decisions will help inform your other large appliance choices.”
With a plethora of products to choose from, we dive into the latest technologies and share the large kitchen appliances on our radar, including ovens, fridges, rangehoods, cooktops and dishwashers.
When it comes to cooktops, versatility is king. The appliance should ideally accommodate di fferent cooking styles and methods, allowing you to explore any cuisines you choose while ensuring your cooking experience begins and ends with convenience.
The V-ZUG 90cm V6000 FullFlex Induction Cooktop with Teppanyaki Plate fi ts this description perfectly, with Karl describing it as “a versatile cooktop designed to make your cooking experience more fl exible and e ffi cient”. Along with a fl exible hob to easily adjust the cooking zones, the cooktop also comes with restore functionality, remembering your previous settings to help save time on repetitive cooking tasks like weekly meal preps.
For those who love fried foods, the Miele KM 7999 FL Induction Cooktop includes onset controls with eight TempControl sensors to guarantee perfect stir-frying without burn. If you own a Miele rangehood, this cooktop automatically connects and communicates through its unique Con@ctivity function for added convenience.
As for rangehoods, gone are the days of the traditional metal that once dominated every kitchen space. Instead, manufacturers like Bora have paved the way for more subtle

designs – smaller in size but still delivering big on functionality.
For example, the BORA Classic 2.0 Downdraft Rangehood uses a fl ush installation that allows it to blend discreetly and elegantly into any modern kitchen. With its intuitive sControl+ control panel, adjusting the settings requires only a simple swipe or tap. But its standout feature lies in its minimum volume, achieved through optimum air fl ow and an extremely quiet fan in the kitchen plinth area, ensuring a quiet and peaceful cooking experience, even on the highest settings.
Homeowners are certainly spoiled for choice in these categories, with manufacturers thinking outside the box and getting creative with their newer models. For those who prefer to invest in brands with a long history of producing innovative kitchen appliances, Karl recommends Gaggenau, particularly the Gaggenau 76cm 400 Series Pyrolytic Built-In Oven BO481112.
“Gaggenau is a trusted, well-renowned brand. This sleek oven features an intuitive TFT touch display, pyrolytic self-cleaning and a three-point core temperature probe for perfect cooking every time. Its handleless, automatic side-door opening adds elegance and functionality to your kitchen,” he says.
Miele is another household name that is trusted in many Australian homes. For those who enjoy steam oven cooking, the Miele DGC 7860 HC Pro Graphite Grey Combi Steam Oven allows for steam cooking, baking and roasting,
all guaranteed to have perfect results thanks to its DualSteam and HydroClean technology.
“The HydroClean promise certainly delivers. The cleaning performance is honestly outstanding – it’s like it’s new again,” says Kamal Watson, leader of Built-in Cooking for Miele Australia. With HydroClean, simply pour the specially formulated liquid cleaner into the strainer at the oven’s base. This liquid then automatically mixes with fresh water and is evenly sprayed throughout the oven interior, providing clean, pristine results so the oven shines like new every time.
Wolf and Unox Casa are two other brands putting versatility and convenience at the forefront of their models. The Wolf M Series Contemporary Handleless Convection Steam Oven not only offers four cooking models (Steam, Convection, Broil and Slow Roast), but also saves up to 50 personalised recipe presets, allowing homeowners to revisit their favourite recipes time and time again. However, what makes this oven exceptionally unique is the added wellness mode, which Camila Marzochi from e&S deems a “true standout from its counterparts”.
“I no longer need a microwave to heat my wheat pack; I can even heat hot stones and towels using this [wellness] mode. The oven also has a sensor that detects the humidity level inside, so I don’t need to calculate how much steam to add when using combi mode,” she explains.
As for the Italian-made Unox Casa, its Model 1 SuperOven integrates cuttingedge technology with iconic European flair,

making the appliance a welcome addition to sophisticated kitchen spaces. Beginner cooks and expert chefs are supported by its digital control panel, which offers 400 cooking programs. Simply select the food and desired result and the oven does the rest, automatically determining the settings while adapting them to the amount of food being cooked.
Camila adds that the Unox Casa Model 1 SuperOven even “self-cleans, [so there are] no odours in the kitchen as the built-in hood is complete with a steam condenser and active carbon filters that absorb cooking vapours which ensure the elimination of odours”.
Meanwhile, luxury range cooker Belling has launched three bespoke-design colours exclusive to the Australian market. Perceived as the Australian answer to the traditional English range cooker and seen in the homes of Kate Middleton and Emma Stone, the Belling Richmond Deluxe Range Cookers are available in three on-trend colours: Seafoam Blue, Racing Green and Dusty Pink – elevating any kitchen space with a pop of colour and a classic, timeless finish.
But Belling range cookers aren’t just pretty faces. Inspired by confidence, sophistication and vibrancy, these models feature four independent ovens: a 41L compact oven with grill, a 71L fanned oven, a 41L slow-cook oven, and finally a 71L multi-function oven with 13 settings and double-extending, removable telescopic runners.
For a truly bespoke and one-of-a-kind range cooker, Camila says you can’t go past La Cornue Chateau. Made to order exclusively in the company’s Saint-Ouen l’Aumône workshop outside of Paris, each range cooker is made by hand and numbered by the craftsmen.
“Each Chateau is handcrafted to the owner’s speci fi c requirements and design. You can also select and customise the joinery to include spice racks and mis en plus drawers, making your kitchen unique,” she adds.

Most kitchen experts recommend that homeowners choose their fridges and dishwashers before moving to cooktops and range cookers, as kitchen size largely dictates the former. In other words, fridges and dishwashers have the power to make or break great designs, so manufacturers are building models that prioritise technological innovation and multifunctionality.
Take, for example, the Liebherr 664l Pigeon Pair SBSES8484 fridge. With built-in exclusive BluPerformance technology at the base of the appliance, this feature allows the refrigerator to have increased net capacity without increasing the unit’s overall dimensions. As a result, there is more space to store food without compromising the appliance’s performance. Meanwhile, Liebherr’s BioFresh
technology provides the optimum storage conditions to preserve the nutrients of food, with the compartments maintaining temperatures just above freezing to prolong the freshness of produce. Last but not least, the appliance comes with a plumbed-in ice maker that stays automatically topped up, perfect during the summer or when you need ice at a moment’s notice.
Another popular option is the Sub-Zero 122cm Classic French-door refrigerator and freezer with internal dispenser. With a door that is 1m wide, it’s the largest French door available on the market. Camila says these appliances are “more than a fridge; they’re food preservation systems. They offer precise temperature control as there’s no shared air between the fridge and the freezer,” she explains. “The air puri fi cation system also ensures you’re not wasting food because every 20 minutes, the puri fi er removes all odours and ethylene gas from the fridge and replaces it with clean air. Because of this, you can store food for far longer than you could in a regular fridge.”
Moreover, this Sub-Zero model includes night mode, which optimises the interior lighting based on the detected ambient light and can reduce the brightness by 90 per cent in dim environments.
With arti fi cial intelligence (AI) being the hottest trend, it’s no surprise that technology leader Samsung has also adopted its fridge collection bene fi ts. The Samsung 810L Family Hub™ French Door Smart Refrigerator uses Food AI and a recipe planner to make meal times fast and easy. By setting food preferences, dietary needs and favourite cuisines, the appliance can provide weekly personalised meal plans via the Meal Planner app. Meanwhile, a tap or swipe down on the home screen lets homeowners know exactly what’s in the fridge. Tap twice to show what’s on the shelves or, when the screen is on, swipe down with two fingers to glimpse inside without opening the fridge.
Regarding dishwashers, Karl recommends the V-ZUG Adoradish V6000 Fully Integrated Dishwasher, as “the heat pump technology signi fi cantly reduces energy consumption and drying time with its automatic door ejector”. Thanks to this innovative technology, this dishwasher achieves an impressive 6-star energy rating and a 5-star water rating, making it an ideal choice for homeowners who want to reduce the cost of their energy bills while conserving water usage.
This fully integrated dishwasher includes V-ZUG’s clever Function Light display for extra convenience. Speci fi cally, it communicates the progress of the dishwashing cycle using LED-coloured lights, allowing homeowners to monitor it at a glance without bright displays interrupting a seamless kitchen design.
How to transform even the most awkward areas into spaces that embody style and functionality in one
Whether you’re buying or building a home, kitchen and bathroom layouts can present their own set of unique challenges. From sloping roofs and sharp angles to oddly structured spaces, fi nding solutions for getting out of these tough spots can be mind-boggling for most people.
So, the next step? Ask the experts. We spoke to several Australian interior designers, stylists and manufacturers to get their perspectives on making the best of complex space issues.
Before jumping into solution mode, quickly assessing your current kitchen and bathroom space always goes a long way. Cara Stepin, a designer from Impala Kitchens & Bathrooms, often sees U- and G-shape kitchens as being the most challenging for homeowners and designers alike due to “multiple corners with inaccessible storage, single entry and exit points, minimal spaces to access the fridge and dishwasher, plus restrictions to benchtop colours due to the joins in the material”.

Gavin Rudd, founder of Smart Kitchen Facelifts, adds that the general placement of cabinets and overall kitchen layout can be sore spots. “Due to the room size, homeowners may struggle to store their most-used items close to the areas where they actually use them. For example, if you are cooking a stir-fry and forget your favourite spice, you need to walk to the pantry, instead of just leaning to the left or right to open a dedicated drawer.”
Chelsea Shear, client liaison and trades coordinator at Dezign Kitchens, echoes a similar sentiment. “Kitchen and bathroom spaces can be pretty tight. In older buildings, there can also be some wonky walls and some quirky design features that make it super di ffi cult if you’re trying to fi t modular cabinet sizes into a space. Corners can also be tricky and can really mess with the functionality of a space if badly designed in a renovation.”
Whether designing a kitchen or bathroom within an existing space or from scratch, Kellie Richardson, founder of Kurved By Design, suggests always asking yourself a few key questions before tackling a challenging layout.
“How big is the area in which you want to redesign the kitchen and bathrooms? Will the bathroom and kitchen fi t all your requirements, and will there be enough storage? By asking yourselves these questions, you start to highlight challenging areas in these spaces and how we can overcome them,” she says.
Above Consider the slope a design feature that adds character and visual interest to the space, rather than a challenge. beaumonttiles.com.au Below A well-placed skylight on the roof can bring natural light to spaces without windows, making them feel airy and brighter. beaumont-tiles.com.au Right Enhance the functionality of a space by adding custom cabinetry with the help of a professional. ausbuild.com.au
Sloping roofs can lead to wasted space, but if used correctly, they can become a highlight in the design aesthetics of your kitchen or bathroom. Tina Nettlefold, an interior designer, home renovator and founder of the not-for-pro fi t homewares brand T.House, says it’s an opportunity to embrace your abode’s uniqueness.
“Rather than seeing them as limitations, integrate them into the design process. Utilise the slope as a feature, enhancing the character and visual interest of the space. Sloping ceilings can add drama and dimension, creating distinct zones within a room. For instance, in a kitchen, they can demarcate the cooking area from the dining space, adding depth to the layout,” she notes.
“From a practical standpoint, it’s essential to acknowledge the challenges of sloped ceilings. Installing fixtures and appliances might require innovative approaches. Consider tailoring storage solutions or selecting adjustable lighting fixtures to suit di fferent heights.”
Indeed, sloping ceilings are an opportunity to get creative with your kitchen and bathroom design. Like Tina, Beaumont Tiles product specialist Michelle Kearney advises using subtle additions to make sloping roofs and ceilings more visually appealing and open.
“Try installing a well-placed skylight on the roof. This can bring natural light to spaces without windows, making them feel airy and brighter,” she suggests. “In the bathroom, where the roof slopes, try adding a bath for a cosy soak. This adds to the room’s functionality and takes height out of the equation. Just ensure the ceiling above is at least 2.1m to comply with the National Building Code.”

sharp angles are a popular trend for many modern contemporary homes. thouse.com.au
For any odd nooks and crannies, Ausbuild Expressions Design Studio manager Emma Boulter recommends enhancing functionality by adding custom cabinetry with the help of a professional. “Utilise custom cabinetry to change the shape of the room. For example, a pantry could help to square o ff a weird nook, but internally, this weird space will provide additional storage.”
Also keep in mind the power of colours and visual aesthetics. Courtney Cole, an interior designer at TileCloud, emphasises that continuity is critical when navigating compact layouts. “Opt for a light, neutral hue for paint to subtly balance any asymmetry within your walls and ceiling. Then enhance visual interest by incorporating various textures and shapes into your palette,” Courtney advises.
“For odd-shaped kitchens and bathrooms, my approach leans towards embracing light and airy colour schemes,” she says. “I prioritise texture and shape when selecting tiles and cabinetry, injecting visual interest into the space. After establishing this solid foundation, I enjoy infusing a touch of playfulness into the styling phase, adding personality and charm to the fi nal design.”
Gavin suggests getting creative with your fl ooring to off set the look of an oddly structured kitchen. “Blend the fl oor with the kitchen splashback. This way, the kitchen will look like it blends with the room. Often, the fl oor is already laid and that is a fi xed point in the design. Then, focus on ergonomic design. If the room blends and the colour tones and textures are correct, you’re onto a winner.”
Sharp angles are easier to use than they fi rst appear and, as Tina explains, something as simple as a shelf can turn this into a fully functional area.
“When dealing with acute L-shaped wall edges, consider softening them with a simple shelf or plank between. This will transform the di ffi cult corner into a functional zone ready for various uses, such as a comfortable reading nook or a stylish storage area.”
Plus, kitchens with sharp angles are a popular trend for many modern contemporary homes as you can do plenty with them. Kellie says homeowners are getting clever with the angles, not just using them as overheads and benchtops underneath with cabinetry below.
“They are using these spaces for tea and co ff ee stations, breakfast nook cabinetry, small wall appliances such as inbuilt co ff ee machines, open shelving for cookbooks and decorative accessories. Sharp-angled kitchen designs are now the more functional areas in a home.”

fi rst. ausbuild.com.au Below Kellie Richardson, founder of Kurved By Design. kurvedbydesign.com Opposite page Sharp wall edge and corners can be used as a comfortable storage nook. beaumont-tiles.com.au
A less-is-more approach can balance style and functionality when it comes to compact spaces. However, Tina recommends planning your layout first before purchasing any appliances and fi xtures, as essential design elements like form, colour and functionality will dictate what you should invest in to ensure your money is well spent.
“Choose your furniture wisely. Opting for fewer, larger pieces of furniture is key. Additionally, maximising vertical space by utilising the full height of the room enhances its spaciousness,” she explains. “Even employing colour schemes using tonal palettes will visually expand the area while maintaining cohesion. Lastly, illuminating the space e ffectively with ample lighting sources
further opens up and brightens the room, making it feel more expansive and inviting.”
To add to the less-is-more mindset, Michelle advocates installing features that can be used for multiple purposes. “For your kitchen fl ooring, you could install Hotwire under- fl oor heating underneath your tiles to keep your toes warm and for general heating in the home. This means you won’t have to install a heater elsewhere and keep the space toasty underneath your perfect tiling choices.”
And as Chelsea suggests, subtle touches like mirrored splashbacks and bright colour palettes can also create the illusion of a bigger space. “Anything that re fl ects light is going to help – think mirror splashbacks, light colours and polished benchtop finishes. Think about how you can maximise the natural light in the space. If there are no windows, is there potential for a skylight? Pared-back styling is also going to help; choose a few design features and really let them shine. You don’t want to clutter a small space with too much stu ff.”
For bathrooms, vanities can be your saving grace for tight layouts, advises Kellie. “By using a small vanity or a vanity from the fl oor upwards, you will still have enough storage and more fl oor area,” she points out. “Look at the functionality in the space by installing a shower niche and a shaving cabinet above the vanity. This will give you more storage without being intrusive on the fl oor. When using tiles in smaller bathrooms, look at choosing a pattern on the fl oor tile only. By doing so, the fl oor area will look longer, more aesthetically pleasing on the eye, as well as tricking the eye to make the area look and feel bigger.”
While it’s tempting to tackle these space challenges yourself, the bene fi ts of hiring a professional are undeniable; an expert opinion will ensure your kitchen and bathroom design succeeds.
“They will delve into the speci fi cs such as kitchen dynamics, whether it be a bustling
family hub or rather a more solitary cooking space,” says Tina. “They will also help to determine the fi ner details used to dictate design choices based on personal lifestyles and daily practices: do you need a spice drawer? Shelves for cookbooks? Storage for easy-access oils and sauces? What is your family’s morning routine? Do you eat at your
kitchen bench or a table? Similarly, in the bathroom, they address factors like family size, usage patterns and desired amenities. By understanding these personal routines, designers can craft spaces that seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics, ensuring homeowners get the most out of their investment.”

The colours we surround ourselves with impact how we feel. Create the mood you want in your bathroom and kitchen with beautiful colours, tones and textures that speak to your heart.
If you’ve ever walked into a space and imperceptibly felt your mood alter, chances are that was the subtle impact of the colours around you. Colours can evoke a range of emotions that in fl uence human feelings and behaviour, from warmth and contentment to excitement, dismay or even anger. Understanding the psychology of colour is a useful tool in creating the aesthetics and ambience you want to achieve in a kitchen or bathroom.
Colour can instantly in fl uence the way we feel. House of Rohl stylist, Fiona Gould, says it can occur as soon as you step into a room. “Cool, soothing tones of blues and greens are reminiscent of nature and can really promote relaxation and tranquillity, which makes them
perfect for bathrooms,” she says. “Warm tones like reds, yellows and oranges are bold, energetic colours that inject excitement and happiness into a room and are therefore great for adding life to your kitchen.” Fiona adds that white is synonymous with peace, purity and cleanliness. “It can also make a space feel bigger and brighter – a key reason we see it adored across kitchen and bathroom design,” she notes.
It’s also important to note that colours can de fine a space in terms of perception and space. Bianca Baldi, associate interior designer from Techné Architecture + Interior Design, says lighter, cooler colours can make a space feel larger. “In very large spaces, always look for the right tone of blue, for example; some are warm, others can make a space feel very cold.”
Bianca adds that it is also okay to play with colours, to create inspired spaces that are uniquely yours. “You might have a home with a bright colour that brings joy, or a colour element that creates surprise and delight, because it’s out of the ordinary,” she says.

Emerging trends in colours and textures in kitchens are all about crafting warm inviting spaces, where friends and family can gather. Adriana Sabulis, designer at Nouvelle Designer Kitchens, says colours and textures work harmoniously together to create warmth. “Think softer hues with timber, russets, sage greens and distressed metals,” she says.
An infusion of the botanical kind also adds a cosy element. Adriana says greenery is always a fabulous addition to any space and a must for a cosy kitchen. “Add potted herbs and other indoor plants in pretty pots to coordinate and balance your colour scheme,” she suggests.
In the bathroom, Fiona agrees natureinspired looks are always an excellent starting point. “Think soft blues, greens and neutrals for a soothing colour palette that adds a beautiful sense of calm,” she says. “Adding subtle texture is my favourite way to soften a room, especially in spaces like bathrooms and kitchens that have a lot of hard materials.” You can update fi xtures, fi ttings and tapware to create fresh new looks in bathrooms and kitchens. In bathroom vanities and tiles, soft pastel hues like greens, blues, peach and pink are style makers, adding splashes of feel-good colour.
Metal tapware is making its mark, lending a sense of timeless sophistication. To add a splash of luxury to a kitchen or bathroom, Fiona suggests matt finishes in brass, bronze or nickel. “These are my go-tos for a luxurious detail,” she says. “Brushed fi nishes o ffer such a clever, understated sense of quiet luxury.”
For an instant colour change and lift, a lick of paint will do the trick. Paint is relatively inexpensive. If you want to change the look and feel of a space, grab some sample pots and start painting. Make sure you check the light levels against the colour of the walls at di fferent times of the day. If it’s not quite what you envision, you can just paint over it.

OF LUXE
Modern kitchens and bathrooms with opulent touches and tones are very much in demand. Bianca says contemporary colours like black are on trend right now. “Darker moody hues create a sense of luxury; they also make a space feel more intimate,” she says. “The black sits in the background, with the island bench as the feature of the space, and then we might see a splash of burgundy, navy blue or green.”
In kitchens, adding elements that are not typical to residential projects can create a welcome element of surprise, says Bianca. “You could have a hospitality inspiration, for example,” she explains. “It could be commercial-style equipment or a chef’s mirror on a back wall so you can look back at your guests while you cook.”
In the family kitchen, colours are warm and inviting; it’s about relaxed living, sharing meals and coming together. Bianca says you’ll often fi nd more calming tones here – greys, pastels, and lots of timber. “However, that’s not to say you can’t do something more dramatic with a dark kitchen if you choose,” she adds.
Bianca points out that organic curves and forms can be part of the overall look. There’s a softness in organic curves and shapes, with ample natural light serving to create warmth within a space and soften any hard edges.
In an entertainer’s kitchen, colours and textures combine to create a warm and welcoming space. There are often integrated appliances, handleless cabinetry for a clean uncluttered look, and plenty of seating. Colours and tones are well considered to match the rest of the interior spaces. Bianca says in this type of kitchen, lighting is key. “This is because it changes the mood in the space,” she shares. “Lamps used in an entertainer’s kitchen can also look fabulous.”
Indoor kitchens that fl ow to an outdoor kitchen should ideally be of the same colour tone and texture. “A current project we are working on has a dark-toned kitchen on the second level of the home,” says Bianca, “but there’s a party room in the basement that is connected by the wine cellar in similar tones.”
Feng shui is an ancient discipline that promotes creating beautiful homes with positive energy and abundance. Jane Langof from Feng Shui Concepts says it’s all about complementary opposites yin and yang, and the energy in the home. “It’s looking at balance between hard and soft spaces and re fl ective vs non-re fl ective surfaces in these spaces,” she says. “For example, plush towels that will balance hard surfaces in the bathroom.”
Jane adds that the balance of nature and synthetic is also important. “Always incorporate wood and natural stone, where possible,” she says. “And plenty of organic curves to encourage the fl ow of energy.”
If your colour preferences run to muted colours, it’s good feng shui, according to Jane. Subtle colours and pastels foster calmness and grounding and help to reduce stress.
If you love di ff users and candles as decor, swap these out for organic versions, natural oils and fragrances and soy candles. “Di ff users and candles that pump out chemicals into the air won’t bring positive energy;
natural alternatives are a far better option,” comments Jane.
Overall, when designing kitchens and bathrooms, Jane suggests thinking about your fi ve senses and what universally appeals to them. “Add fresh flowers or plants, plush fabrics that are beautiful to touch, and play calming music,” she advises. “Spaces should be beautiful and clutter-free, and swap out processed foods on display in the kitchen for a fruit bowl.”
Update your look with some inspiring art that brings you joy. In the past, art was rarely found in kitchens or bathrooms, but no more. Bold abstracts infused with colour, contemporary artworks that are a talking point, sculpted fi gures, and metal art to add texture and form are popping up in bathrooms and kitchens all over the country.
Art is an opportunity to add your own unique style to your kitchen or bathroom. Note that in bathrooms, some types of art may not be suitable as these are moist and damp environments.
Above The kitchen island has a commanding presence and is paired with a striking stone and warm timber flooring. Image Tom Blachford Below left Wallpaper offers an opportunity to add colour and something quite unique.
Wallpaper is back in vogue – from pops of colour in powder rooms to adding designer flair to a kitchen wall or crafting a dreamy greenspace in a bathroom. Adriana says wallpaper offers a host of design opportunities. “Wallpaper is a fantastic medium for adding interest, style and panache,” she enthuses.
From bold patterns to botanicals, Art Deco, even classic Victorian, all are in demand right now. Adriana says geometrics is also a great option. “If you want to create retro looks, punchy styles or just playful themes, these work well,” she notes. Replica finishes are another fabulous look. “Think wallpapers that look like brickworks, timber or metal cladding – they’re a great way to add texture and dimension when the real thing is just not viable.”
Emerging trends in colours and textures in kitchens and bathrooms work to create beautiful modern spaces. Fiona says colour drenching with deep moody colours like burgundy, emeralds and chocolate browns are a big trend in bathroom and kitchen design. “Imagine a rich, deep-coloured vanity with a similar colour basin atop,” says Fiona. “Embracing bold colours in multiple materials within one space, but in a sophisticated way, is really taking over from safer, subtle pops of colour.”
Like any fashion or trend, it is cyclic in nature. Fiona says what’s old is in fact new again – but this time we are mixing both. “We are making spaces feel more curated with a mix of old and contemporary combined, opting for ‘living’ brass tapware finishes that develop a beautiful patina over time, like the ranges available from Perrin & Rowe,” she says.

The Staron benchtop in Supreme Cotton White is without a doubt the kitchen’s hero feature
DESIGN RESPONSE objective
To design a light, bright kitchen that makes the most of the compact space that was available solution
A neutral colour palette, a considered floor plan, and a stunning U-shaped Staron benchtop
This kitchen is an excellent example of how a compact space can be designed to be aesthetically pleasing, yet incredibly functional too. Gone are the days of needing vast amounts of space to attain your dream kitchen – a clever, considered design like this can transform a smaller area into a charming contemporary kitchen.
The design team chose a neutral palette, giving the kitchen a light, bright ambience. The Shaker-style cabinetry provides interest, while the exquisite splashback featuring Southern Cross Ceramics Artisan Vienna Clay adds extra depth to the mostly white design.
The Staron benchtop in Supreme Cotton White is without a doubt the kitchen’s hero feature. Staron is the benchtop surface of choice for many renovators and kitchen designers. Why? Because of its versatility and durability. Staron surfaces are all non-porous in nature, making them easy to clean. Increasing the longevity of the kitchen after many years of use, Staron can be re-sanded and restored back to its original condition, meaning this kitchen’s benchtop can stay looking crisp and new for years to come.
Staron surfaces also offer great design fl exibility, thanks to their homogenous nature and inconspicuous joining capabilities. The design team used this to their advantage in this kitchen, resulting in a beautiful U-shaped benchtop without any unsightly join markings visible.
The awning windows, framed with detailed moulding, serve as an inviting focal point at the heart of the kitchen. Enhanced by the seamless bench-to-wall integration achieved with Staron, the window stands out without distraction.
The end result is a stunning culinary space that’s bound to stay functional and contemporary well into the future

O ff set by warm grey counters, the colour scheme within this design by Carrera Kitchens is warmed by the existing honey-toned timber floors. The open layout, defined by crisp white walls, feels light and airy despite the darkly hued colour palette.
Black appliances and matt black tapware keep the mood going, while a stainless-steel fridge nestles nicely into the overall scheme of modern functionality. To the left of the cooktop, a coffee nook / dry bar extends from the kitchen
and is given added texture and warmth with the inclusion of fl oating shelves of Boston Oak that tie into the timber fl ooring.
Crisp, low-pro fi le straight lines are the hallmark of this kitchen, from the flat-panel cabinetry to the 12mm Dekton counters and splashback in a silky concrete-look fi nish. Topping a massive kitchen island that houses plenty of seating, the Dekton counter is a durable and attractive surface that makes entertaining a breeze.
To ensure the uncluttered look of the kitchen space, a butler’s pantry was cleverly constructed behind the room. A change to the layout of an out-of-date kitchen was needed to make better use of the space. While the room’s many windows meant the area was well lit, it made it di ffi cult to recon fi gure the space without blocking the light.
The previous kitchen, designed in a U-shape, only utilised a quarter of the room. The space had been divided by an ill- fi tting breakfast bar with seating between the window and the kitchen, which cut the kitchen area in half.
Chelsea Shear from Dezign Kitchens worked with the clients to create a fresh new look that would incorporate better storage solutions. The decision was made to combine the kitchen, dining and living sections together to make for a bigger space. As the clients had a lot of small appliances that they used daily, they wanted extra storage to keep these hidden.
A custom door created a hidden passageway to the existing walk-in pantry, while the new bifolddoor pantries make for functional storage spaces for appliances. The open-shelf timber-look bookcase and display cabinet add warmth and personality as well as providing further storage.
The island bench with its connecting timber-clad dining table creates a central showpiece that ties the space together. The dining table is not only eye-catching; it has become an activity hub for entertaining, as well as for everyday use.

In a Sydney home, a keen cook dreamt of dishing up delicious meals to their family and friends. Yet their kitchen, a dark and dated space, wasn’t appealing. It also lacked storage, with cookware and accessories cluttering the benchtop. The room next door – a formal dining area – was rarely used and acted as a storage space and wine room instead.
A revamp was led by Collaroy Kitchen Centre, which took the client’s wishes into consideration and designed a kitchen that would be more functional and inviting. Two walls were removed to create a bigger space. The window and archway in the formal dining room were bricked up to create a butler’s pantry and a bar area. The dining table was moved and a casual seating area was created in front of the bar area.

Wanting a contemporary, statement kitchen including a butler’s pantry for a new family home, the homeowner approached Nobby Kitchens with some speci fi c requests – clean lines, hidden storage, and lots of bench space.
The homeowner loved to entertain but did not want any mess and clutter to be visible when the guests arrived. Subsequently, the team worked hard to bring to life a butler’s kitchen that functioned as a pantry, appliance storage area and washing space too. Separated from the main kitchen by beautiful white double doors, the butler’s pantry bears the brunt of messes made during prep for family meals and dinner parties, allowing the main kitchen to remain sparkling clean and beautifully presented at all times.
The main kitchen was very much designed to be an extension of the adjoining area, with a similar colour palette for seamless cohesion. Beautiful polyurethane Shaker doors, combined with contemporary Woodmatt doors above the bench, suit the home’s contemporary aesthetic to a tee. The Dekton Orix benchtop and splashback is cloud-like in appearance yet hardy enough to resist staining or scratching. Paired together, these elements seamlessly create the organic look the homeowner was after for her kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry room.
Of course, every high-end kitchen needs high-end appliances and plentiful storage, and this space is no exception. Stunning yet endlessly functional Belling appliances were selected for the kitchen and butler’s pantry to help the family whip up sumptuous meals. A Billi chilled, hot and sparkling water tap was added to the butler’s pantry for the family’s convenience. With clean lines, high-quality surfaces, top-of-the-line appliances and plentiful bench space and storage solutions, this kitchen is precisely what the homeowner wanted and she couldn’t be more delighted.

This pint-sized apartment bathroom needed a clever update. The homeowner had just downsized and wanted the apartment’s original bathroom to have a hotel-style luxurious feel.
As the design team got to work, they drew inspiration from the beautiful bush reserve just beyond the apartment building when choosing the striking yet calming colour palette. The bathroom’s feature tiles are in a cool gumtree shade, and the timber vanity and main tiles provide texture and warmth. The brass tapware adds a touch of luxury, tying in with the hotel-like ambience the homeowner requested.
As the bathroom is just 1.8m x 1.8m in size, the design team chose to remove the bathroom’s original bath and recon fi gure the layout to make the space feel larger. The use of two di fferent tile styles also helped improve the room’s spacious feel.
As there is no natural light available, aesthetically appealing light fi xtures were placed throughout to create atmosphere while ensuring the space is well lit.
This bathroom may be small in size, but it is abundant in style and substance – just as the homeowner requested.

The traditional Hamptons style remains popular for kitchens, and for good reason. Its classic yet fresh look can bring a kitchen alive and give it that homely feel many families want for their heart of the home.
This kitchen is located in a newly built casual living space added at the back of the house. It needed to be highly functional for its busy family, who love to cook and entertain. Due to the large space available, compromising on design features was not necessary. The sleek white island is the centrepiece of the room, with detail in the joinery column around the island providing a strong statement of crafted workmanship.
Creating an area for small appliances, where pocket doors could be left open when in use without obstructing the working space, was a must. The Blum LEGRABOX drawer system within the pantries improves functionality and accessibility while also looking stylish.
The cooking zone, with its wall ovens, required plenty of bench space and a powerful extraction system. With a bounty of available room, the kitchen is able to accommodate both the cook and their keen diners, perfectly suited to a family.

Wanting to replace their decades-old “developer’s kitchen” with a modern, dramatic space, the homeowners contacted Nouvelle Kitchens with a list of requests: better work fl ow, darker colours, and a wow-factor island.
To meet the brief, the design team prioritised redesigning the kitchen’s layout, ultimately settling on fl oor-to-ceiling cabinetry and a dramatic island. The best part? There was plenty of space left over for a hidden laundry, complete with bifold doors to make sure it can be accessed easily but remains hidden from view when not in use.
Caesarstone in Black Tempal appears on the island, surrounding benchtops and splashback, commanding attention while adding interest against the Laminex Black
AbsoluteMatte doors and panels. Strategically placed LED under-cabinet strip lighting creates a dramatic e ffect. The integrated black appliances, including a V-Zug integrated co ffee machine, oven and cooktop, as well as handleless cabinetry, facilitate the room’s seamless, minimalist feel. There’s plenty of clever storage for dry goods, spices and other ingredients in the kitchen thanks to the Kesseböhmer pull-out pantry. And, if the homeowners fancy a glass of wine while they cook dinner, their Vintec wine fridge is within easy reach for a quick tipple.
Thanks to its modern design and lasting quality, this designer kitchen will no doubt serve the homeowners’ lifestyle for years to come.

The homeowners knew exactly what they wanted when they approached the team at Bathrooms by Oldham – a luxe update to their previously uninviting and impractical bathroom. It needed to include plenty of storage and feature something blue, their favourite colour.
The bathroom’s original wood panelling combined with dark tiles exuded an unwelcome sauna-like ambience, so this was replaced with more modern light-coloured stone-effect tiles and an Artisan Aqua feature wall complete with a cleverly lit recess. The team opened up the room by removing a wall and relocating the entrance. Once this was done, there was plentiful space for ample storage, an extra-large stone bath, as well as a spacious walk-in shower.
There was another major upside to relocating the entrance. Now, upon entering the bathroom, the family and their guests are met with a beautiful vanity that exudes hotel-style luxe. This bathroom has gone from drab to fab thanks to the clever renovation, and the homeowners couldn’t be happier!

A desire to have the kitchen better match the style of the home is what inspired this recent renovation. While the client was happy with the kitchen’s overall layout, they wanted the space to be updated in a classic Hamptons/Shaker profi le with a pop of colour.
Designer Ally Brusco from Kitchens U Build Bayswater experimented with colours and other pro fi les to inject more personality into the kitchen. Ensuring the Mayfair black-matt handles didn’t wash into the kitchen island was a consideration. The decision was made to match the handles to the tapware, making it feel purposeful.
The main challenge was to create enough storage for the client, so every cabinet and drawer was maximised to provide this solution. Shallow cabinets on the back of the island were added to store those not-so-often-used items. Janper’s Thompson 3 Designer White and Ink Breeze were chosen for cabinetry as they exude a classic Hamptons look.
The kitchen’s island is a true statement, with Lavistone’s Divera selected for its exquisite and natural aesthetic. Polytec’s Prime Oak colour was used for shelving as it has hues of blue throughout, complementing the splashes of blue in the room.

Nestled in the fast-growing community of Fyansford at the foot of the old Cement Works in Geelong, this newly built home is occupied by a family with adult children who are transitioning to separate living arrangements. The homeowners were after a main bathroom that offers an unexpected moment of visual surprise for family and friends who drop by for catch-ups, yet is still able to operate as a functional, calming family bathroom. Tasked with this challenge, the design team opted for a predominantly industrial, monochromatic interior colour scheme to create a sense of cohesion with the home’s interior and exterior. They then added a bold touch with a combination of deep-green wall tiles and green terrazzo floor tiles from GT&B. These act as a reference point to the leafy green central courtyard, while also creating striking visual interest.
Wrapping the mottled green feature tile around most of the main bathroom walls was explored as a way to create an impactful space to escape to, tucked away from the rest of the house. A black vanity and coloured fi xtures were chosen to create contrast, and a skylight was added to ensure plenty of natural light during the day.

Presented with a blank canvas to work their magic, this kitchen’s design and build team knew the fi nal result needed to be nothing short of showstopping. They set to work choosing an eye-catching colour scheme and stylish high-end appliances and designing a layout that suits both day-to-day family life and the homeowners’ entertaining needs. This included a cleverly designed butler’s pantry, with plenty of space for storage, food prep, and making messes away from the main kitchen space.
The team knew a modern, sustainable stone surface was critical for the success of this kitchen and butler’s pantry design – one that would complement the home’s aesthetic while standing the test of time. Sintered porcelain was selected for its optimal surface characteristics, including stain resistance and UV stability. The homeowners and design team visited Porcelain Plus Australia to choose their ideal surfaces, aware of the brand’s reputation for offering a vast range of European sintered porcelain.

A temple to practicality, Lion Ox, a specialist in bathroom renovations, was tasked with transforming this outdated bathroom into a modern haven for bathing, accompanied with all the functionality a busy family needs.
Though limited in space, the homeowners desired a separate freestanding tub and walk-in shower. Given the size parameters, the dilemma was solved with the inclusion of a back-to-wall bath that saves on fl oor space.
A single-basin vanity further ensured that all the client’s wishes were ful fi lled within the space allocated to the main bathroom.
When it came to design, the owners wanted a neutral space that would stand the test of time and provide a relaxing atmosphere. Large-format porcelain tiles in a lightly veined pattern of warm grey and white were laid across the fl oor and up three of the walls, all the way to the ceiling. This solid foundation was complemented by a single feature wall of white finger tiles behind the bath. The textural e ffect produced by the linear feature tiles adds visual interest but maintains the calm feel of the room.
The vertical pattern formed by the finger tiles is re fl ected in the bathroom’s single vanity and off set by the soft curves of the single round basin. The grooved vanity front keeps the pattern fl owing while contributing additional depth to the design to make it contemporary yet timeless. A sleek mirrored cabinet above the vanity a ffords the inhabitants additional face-level storage.
Finishing off the design with matt black tapware that grounds the light-hued palette, this bathroom is a contrasting scheme softened by textural features that create a simple yet elegant bathroom.

Effective drainage is vital in every bathroom. Not only does choosing the right system result in long-term cost and time savings, it also ensures homeowners are protected in terms of health, comfort and safety. Now, with the National Construction Code 2022 (NCC 2022) incorporating Liveable Housing Provisions for the first time, new dwellings will be required to have at least one accessible shower.
Stormtech’s 120SCS Shower Screen Support drain will facilitate this while at the same time simplifying design and installation. This all-new product is a versatile linear drainage system that provides dual function as a drain of the nonshower side of the shower screen, and a support for the shower screen itself.
Made from 316 stainless steel, the 120SCS is designed for flexibility and ease of installation. Wall-to-wall installation allows a simple dual fall across the bathroom. Additionally, as the dual fall sheds water more effectively, larger-format tiles can be used, eliminating complex labour and tile wastage.
Importantly, simple dual falls are helpful for people with access and mobility issues because the shower entrance is open. More speci fi cally, when a shower chair or stool is used, the single plane of fall in the shower area ensures that the chair or stool will not rock. This enhances bathroom accessibility and accommodates the NDIS and Liveable Housing Provisions for future adaptive use.
Furthermore, as the drain is away from the entry door to the bathroom, any water thrown towards the door will run back to the drain. This reduces the risk of amenity loss if a water heater within the bathroom were to fail as the water spilled would drain normally instead of fl ooding the bathroom and then into other areas of the building.
The 120SCS represents the latest innovation in shower drainage. Available in all Stormtech designer grates and finishes, the 120SCS Shower Screen Support drain exceeds all Australian Standards, is WaterMark certi fi ed and is exclusive to Stormtech.

Autofl o / AutoAqua was the first company in Australia to develop and produce electronic tapware in 1985. The original design had a unique, internationally patented feature being the “safety run timer,” which has since been adopted by all electronic tap manufacturers, a testament to the innovative nature of the company.
In the late 1990s Autofl o was acquired by an electronics manufacturing company in Melbourne. This acquisition helped the company diversify its product range and cleverly incorporate electronic sensing into new bespoke tapware, setting a lead followed by other sensor tap manufacturers. The local design and manufacturing capability gives Autofl o a distinct advantage over competitors that import and supply off -the-shelf products.
As a local manufacturer, Autofl o works with architects and interior designers to develop the best product for the application, which may include customised features in operation with a range of finishes to complement the design palette.
In addition to their branded Autofl o / AutoAqua range of products, they have designed and manufactured an exclusive range of kitchen and bathroom tapware for the Reece Group.
AutoFlo understands that electronic tapware is not in the standard plumber’s manual, which is why they have a full-time customer service and technical resource available to offer input at the design or concept stage on projects and support during or after installation if required.

A home’s kitchen is no longer a closed-off space in which the cooking is done in isolation. These days, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and the boundaries between traditional living spaces and the kitchen now rarely exist.
That’s why it’s important for homeowners, designers and architects to carefully consider all aspects of the kitchen’s functionality when designing the space. And there’s one aspect that’s paramount – ventilation.
When it comes to open-plan living spaces that include a kitchen, there’s nothing worse than smells from the kitchen permeating the entire area – or worse, the entire home. However, with the right choice of rangehood, this problem can be cleverly averted.
Qasair specialises in rangehoods that deal e ffi ciently with the heat, steam, grease and odours that are inevitable in an oftenused kitchen. Qasair can help you create the perfect kitchen thanks to its rangehoods that: Cover the entire cooktop
Can be installed at the right height (either 650mm or 800mm above the cooktop)
Have a high air movement (from 900 cubic metres up to 2700 cubic metres)
Have a four-pole motor, which is wellinsulated to be quiet when working
Have mesh fi lters that capture the by-products of cooking
Are made in stainless steel type 304.
These capabilities are what set Qasair rangehoods apart from the rest. The rangehoods are designed to stand the test of time, while working hard to keep Aussie homes smelling delightful.

After spending some time online, these satisfied homeowners chose a family-operated company with a wonderful reputation
How did you discover Bathrooms By Oldham and what made you choose them?
We discovered Bathrooms by Oldham while trawling the internet (as you do these days), and we liked what we read and saw. They’re a highly reputable family-operated business, clearly delivering high-end beautiful rooms and are local.
What was the design process and how did you feel going through it?
The design process was relatively stress-free. We knew the renovation would be big and very challenging, requiring skill and creativity, but both Deanne and Phil (and their team) are highly experienced and we felt con fi dent in choosing them. Communication was clear and easy. They were just delightful! Deanne has an eye for beautiful things and we tapped into her knowledge and skill when choosing tiles, hardware etc.
How long was the build process and how did the home’s inhabitants cope during this period?
The renovation took a few months, but we weren’t in any hurry, there was no disruption to our daily lives or routines. Deanne and Phil are professionals and attention to detail is also of high priority. The workmanship is top class.
What is your favourite thing about your new bathroom?
The functionality, room layout and aesthetic are the real highlights. Everyone goes ‘wow’ when they first enter the space, which we love to hear.
How has it changed the way you operate in your home?
The bathroom is so expertly designed and built that it’s now a far more functional and soothing space and so enjoyable to use (and show off ).

After a thorough search, these satisfied homeowners chose the business that was most invested in their vision
How did you discover Rosemount Kitchens and what made you choose them?
We looked at several companies and chose Rosemount because they were most invested in what we were trying to achieve. We could tell from visiting the showroom that we were making the right choice. We got cheaper quotes elsewhere but felt that we were going to get what we wanted from Rosemount. They were really friendly, customer service was great, and at all times they wanted to make sure they delivered a quality product that met our needs and that we were really happy with. They were just really wonderful to work with.
What was the design process and how did you feel going through it?
In the first couple of meetings we met with the designer for two hours at a time. He wanted to make sure that he fully understood us as people, how we were going to live in this space, what was really important to us and what was non-negotiable. He was really honest with us in terms of where we might have to fl ex and where we might have to scope things down if we wanted to work within our budget. When I went to the designer with an idea, he was so open to thinking about it and fi guring out how he could incorporate it and I wasn’t afraid to go with more ideas. The finished product is nowhere near where we started, but it’s so much better than what it would have been and I think that is through the relationship we built.
How long was the build process and how did the home’s inhabitants cope during this period?
It was a big renovation – a kitchen, laundry, four bathrooms, study area and second living space. We originally planned for a threemonth job but that was delayed because of an unforeseen structural issue when knocking down a wall to create the bigger kitchen and Euro laundry. So we moved back in after three months and were in the house for a couple of months while the renovation was completed. We coped okay because we had access to a bathroom and a small kitchenette with an electric fry pan and pressure cooker while the main kitchen renovation was fi nished downstairs.
What is your favourite thing about your new kitchen?
When I saw one of the walk-in pantries at Rosemount’s showroom, I started to think about how that might work within our space and from there I came up with the idea of knocking out the wall between the kitchen and laundry, putting in a Euro laundry, making the kitchen bigger and putting in the pantry. It’s made such a di fference. Being able to put appliances, utensils and other stu ff in the pantry has given us a whole lot more bench space. As a result, we probably now eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together at the kitchen bench more than we do at the dining room table.
How has it changed the way you operate in your home?
It’s transformed how we live from day to day and feels pretty incredible to be honest. When people walk in now, they go “oh wow, I didn’t realise it was this big!” Compared to how it was before, it just feels brighter and lighter. We often say to each other, “I just love our house. I feel so lucky to live here.” It feels like we live in a hotel and is pretty amazing to come home to at the end of the day.
