Education
The Faculty of Education & Sport is based at the Bedford campus. We have academic roots that go back to 1882 in general education and to 1903 in physical education. You will benefit from rich learning experiences, career-focused teaching, and opportunities to undertake research projects.
The faculty has well-established links with more than 500 schools so that you can benefit from a practical and relevant learning experience. We offer specialisms in a range of areas. Students from other countries have the opportunity to gain experience in local schools, and compare their native country’s education system with the UK’s.
Links with Professional Bodies Our sports laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and the BA (Hons) Health, Nutrition and Exercise is accredited by the Association for Nutrition. Many of our sports degrees offer you the opportunity to gain extra nationally recognised qualifications alongside your degree. We also offer a wide range of teacher training courses which provide qualified teacher and qualified early years teacher status. Our English language provision is accredited by the British Council.
English Language, Linguistics, TEFL Our undergraduate courses offer the opportunity to study language and linguistics across a broad spectrum which will prepare you for careers in a range of professions, including speech and language therapy, lexicology, media, broadcasting, legal and forensic intelligence. The TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) pathway will allow you to gain an additional qualification that gives you British Council certification.
Facilities
Sport Science and Physical Activity
The Gateway building at our Bedford campus offers you teaching environments which support our student-centred approach to learning and the integration of the latest technology. Our sports facilities include a gym, strength and conditioning suite and AstroTurf in addition to the normal sports hall. The six purpose-built sport science laboratories and two molecular and cellular physiology labs promote excellence in both teaching and research. The environmental chamber is used both for research and by top-class athletes for training and preparation for competition in different climates.
Recent investments in state-of-the-art laboratories will provide you with the best sporting education possible and create numerous opportunities for engagement in experimental work. We have an extensive network of links with sports organisations and employers, ensuring that your studies incorporate the most up-to-date knowledge and ideas. Our internationally recognised research combines specialist knowledge focusing on nutrition, exercise, and therapeutic strategies to improve global health awareness and quality of life across multi-cultural communities.
