Arrival in the UK You should aim to arrive in the UK before Saturday, 14 September as from day one we have planned exciting social programme and informative events for you. You should book your flight to one of the London airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Luton. It is best, where possible, to try and arrive between 9am and 5pm, as this will ensure you have an easier journey up to Bedfordshire. Travelling to the campus from the airport Please make sure you have checked on your offer letter whether your course is based in Luton, Bedford or Milton Keynes campus to plan your onward journey from the airport to your campus accordingly. You can book our chauffer service, where you will be picked up from the airport and taken to your accommodation, for more details please visit: www.beds.ac.uk/airportpickup. Alternatively you can use public transport to travel to your destination.

Travelling to campus using public transport Luton campus From London Heathrow Airport: By coach - the National Express coach is the most convenient way of travelling from Heathrow to Luton. It departs from the central bus station between Terminals 1, 2 and 3. By train - an underground service is available from Terminals 1-3 (Terminals 4 and 5 have their own separate underground station). Take a train on the Piccadilly Line to St Pancras International. From London Gatwick Airport: By train - take the First Capital Connect train service direct to Bedford Milton Keynes campus From London Heathrow Airport: By coach - the National Express coach is the most convenient way of travelling from Heathrow to Milton Keynes.

Accommodation Your first few days and weeks in the UK will be much easier and more enjoyable if you have arranged your accommodation well in advance of your arrival at the University of Bedfordshire. We would also advise to live at the campus your course is taught at, as it saves money and time spent on travelling.

Halls of Residence Living in University Halls can be a great way to truly experience British culture and make lifelong friends from all walks of life. We offer high-quality, modern accommodation in Luton and Bedford, all in close proximity to the respective campuses. To find out more and view details of all available University accommodation, visit: www.beds.ac.uk/internationalhalls

Host Accommodation Choosing to stay with a host family will give you a great introduction to life in the UK. You will be able to perfect your English language skills as you will largely communicate with your family in English. A host family may as well help you deal with feelings of homesickness or culture shock, and they will also give you an excellent insight into British customs and traditions. For a list of families or more information about this scheme, please email: advice.international@beds.ac.uk

Private Accommodation If you choose to rent in the private sector you will usually have to wait until you arrive in the UK and then find a place to stay. This means that you will need to be prepared to stay in a hotel or a bed and breakfast (B&B) until you find new accommodation. Please be aware that this could be expensive and unfortunately the University is unable to provide emergency accommodation, as all of our rooms are usually fully booked by the start of term.

Useful links Applying for Halls of Residence accommodation: Bedford campus: www.beds.ac.uk/accommodation Luton campus: www.studentvillagebeds.com You can look for private accommodation on websites like: www.rightmove.co.uk* www.sparerooms.co.uk* www.easyroommate.co.uk*

What to pack You don’t need to worry too much about bringing in lots of different clothes, kitchen equipment, food etc with you when travelling to the UK. Whether you are based in Luton, Bedford or Milton Keynes campus, you will be close to the local shops where you can buy everything you need at reasonable prices – from bed sheets, duvets, stationery, to pots and pans, plug adaptors, to exotic foods, spices and Halal or Kosher meat. As you may know, the weather in the UK can be quite variable and often changes quickly! Temperatures range from 30 degrees centigrade in the summer months to -5 degrees centigrade in the winter.

It would be best to have different types of clothes in preparation for all weather types and an umbrella is definitely a good idea! You might like to bring your national costume, as we invite all our new international students to wear this on occasions such as the Welcome Party early on in the term. If you regularly take any medication, please bring at least one month’s supply with you. If possible, try to bring your short medical history with you as well (listing any serious illnesses, acute conditions, allergies, operations, vaccinations etc) – it will make things easier at the doctor’s registration.

Useful shops Wilkinson - stationery, kitchen equpiment, bedding Argos - kitchen equpiment and appliances, electronics, bedding Tiger - useful things for your home and study Staples/Ryman/John Smith’s stationery Primark - cheap seasonal clothes Supermarkets/local markets world’s cuisine cooking ingredients, spices, Halal meat Iceland/Farmfoods - frozen ready meals

Visa information As an international student you will need to obtain permission from the British Embassy or High Commission in your country before you travel to the UK. This process is known as obtaining ‘entry clearance’. We advise you to apply to the British Embassy/High Commission three months prior to the start of your studies. Please note that you must not apply for your visa nor use your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number more than three months in advance of your studies. Your visa will be granted for up to one month before your studies begin.

(non-EU students)

If you have any questions about the kind of visa you need and how to apply for it, please contact your local embassy or the University of Bedfordshire’s agent in your country. For more information, check out the UK Border Agency website: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying/adult-students/apply-outside-uk/.

The points-based system

Visa tips

You will need to obtain 40 points to qualify for a student visa.

• Check the conditions and length of your visa to make sure they are correct • Check that your visa does not say ‘work prohibited’ • If you think there is a mistake on your visa stamp, contact the British Embassy in your country • If your visa application is refused, you can apply for an Administrative Review within 28 days of the refusal notice and your application will be looked at by another Officer

• 30 points = providing a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number to the UKBA which contains details of your studies with us. We will provide you witha CAS letter, sent by email, containing this number • 10 points = providing evidence of your finances that show you can cover maintenance costs

When you arrive Term Termdates dates Arrival in the UK: before 14 September 2013 Social and academic induction programme: 14 September 2013 First teaching week: 7 October 2013 Term one: 7 October 2013 - 13 December 2013 Term two: 6 January 2014 - 4 April 2014 Term three: 22 April 2014 – 16 June 2014 Please note that due to UK’s Border Agency regulations you should check with the International Office if you are planning to go home or travel to another country during the academic year (between 15 September 2013 and 16 June 2014).

Paying your tuition fees

(non-EU students)

Before you travel to the UK it is vital to ensure that you have enough money to cover living expenses and fees. You should not expect that a part-time job will cover these costs. You would have already paid a deposit of minimum 50% of your tuition fees and you should pay the remaining fees before or at registration or set up a payment plan. It may be useful to know that if you pay the total amount before or at registration, you may be eligible for a substantial fee discount of between £600 and £1,500.

To find out more about how to pay your fees, visit our website: www.beds.ac.uk/internationalfees For more information or advice please contact the University’s Finance Office: +44 (0)1582 743807/51/52 +44 (0)1582 743330 finance@beds.ac.uk

Short-term accommodation Ideally you should arrange your accommodation before you come to the UK. However, if you were not able to do this in advance or are planning to rent privately when you arrive, you can arrange short-stay accommodation locally until you find a new place. You can stay in a hotel or a bed-and-breakfast (B&B) for a short time but as this can get costly very quickly, we do not recommend it as a long-term solution.

Orientation Schedule We have planned an exciting social and academic induction programme before your course starts in October. It is important that you attend all sessions as we will explain support services available to you, give you a tour of the facilities and prepare you for a successful study at Bedfordshire.

We have also planned social trips so that you can visit the famous places in the UK and make new friends instantly. To benefit from the full programme make sure you arrive before Saturday, 14 September. Please see the schedule for your campus in this brochure for more details.

Communication skills We recognise that the ability to be an effective communicator is essential in the workplace and in the modern world in general. So the Language and Communication Department has designed the unique Communication Skills Programme, which is mandatory for all first year international students. Communication Skills classes are incorporated into your first year UG or PG departmental timetable. They will

help you develop your communication ability in three key areas: • Study skills in your subject area • Effective communication in your field of study • British university cultural know-how For further information, contact the Language Centre: 01582 489032 languagecentre@beds.ac.uk www.beds.ac.uk/cs
