How do you support students during their time at Bedfordshire? Myself and your Beds SU exec team are here to support and represent you across all of our campuses. We cover all areas of university life, making sure that you get the best possible education that you can, whilst you study here and much more. What are your words of wisdom for new, first year students? A quote I like to use is ‘Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one’. University life is rich with new and exciting opportunities for you to experience, so I would encourage you to break out of your comfort zone and try something new.

What is your favourite mewwmory from first year? My favourite memory has to be all the events I attended. The events that are held at university allowed me to meet new people and make long term friends, and were also a great way to let off some steam. Where is your favourite place to chill out? The Metro bar has a warm and comfortable ambience. It is the best place to unwind in between lectures with friends, and even in the evenings when there are different events happening.

How do you support students during their first week at Bedfordshire? My role is to make sure all international students feel welcomed and have all the information they need when they arrive. I am also a point of contact during your study at Bedfordshire. I run various student experience programmes as part of the University’s More than a Degree initiatives. What is your favourite memory from working with students at the University? My favourite memories come from taking students on Go Global and Go Europe trips and helping and supporting the experience of a life time. Students have nicknamed me Uncle Lee.

Become a course or faculty representative to be the voice for fellow students on your course, and help solve or raise issues on behalf of your peers. You get access to full student rep training run by the Students’ Union.
Boost your CV and learn a new language with one of our language classes. Including Spanish, German, Mandarin and Arabic, you can study alongside your degree, for a small fee.
Our international students can make the most of trips to a series of European destinations as part of Go Europe. With visits to cities in France, Belgium, Holland or Germany, you can build your network and broaden your knowledge of the global market place.
Become a peer-assisted learning (PAL) leader PAL sessions are weekly sessions run by second and third year students for first year students. Being a PAL leader enables you to improve many transferable skills including communication, presentation and organisational skills, to name a few! 98 per cent of PAL leaders said it improved their student experience.
Connections to industry We work with lots of big national and international organisations. Take part in masterclasses, external competitions and live briefs to provide you with industry knowledge and experience and to help differentiate you from other graduates.
Gain industry experience Many of our courses provide you with the opportunity to gain industry experience alongside your studies. Law students are able to volunteer with the Law Clinic and Refugee Legal Aid Project, Sports Therapy students undertake work placements in our very own Sports Therapy Clinic during their second and third years, and students within the School of Art & Design can gain experience at Guildford Street Press, to name a few.
Volunteer your time The Beds SU volunteering service enables you to get hands-on experience and make a real difference. The University of Bedfordshire is committed to contributing to the development of civic and public life through involving students and staff in volunteering programmes. Sport for all Interested in sport? We have our on-campus Aspire Gyms at Luton and Bedford, which offer a range of cardiovascular equipment and free weights. YOUR LIBRARY Our students have fantastic multimedia study resources at their fingertips in our cutting-edge, well equipped libraries. In 2016 a purpose built, seven-storey library opened at our Luton campus. The library features dedicated silent areas, breakout spaces and pods to facilitate group work, a cafe, and state-of-the-art IT and AV equipment.
To help with study needs we offer induction loops, height adjustable tables, flat-screen monitors, keyboards for visually impaired users and Keyboard Pro software for developing typing skills.

Our library resources Our extensive, sector-leading digital library is available from most devices with internet access. Explore the full range of print and online books, journals, articles, databases, exam papers and dissertations with DISCOVER – the online single search tool that searches most electronic resources and the library catalogue in one go. It saves time by showing what’s available to read online, what’s on the shelves and how to reserve items from another campus.
The Study Hub based within our library facilities, brings together three teams of specialists: Academic Liaison Librarians, Computer Skills Trainers and Professional and Academic Development (PAD) Tutors and Trainers. These teams offer a wide range of learning opportunities which will help you develop your academic skills and improve your assignment writing techniques; leading to better grades and enhanced employability. FEES AND FINANCE Here at the University of Bedfordshire we try to make financing your studies as simple and affordable as possible. That’s why we offer a number of scholarships and bursaries to support you throughout your time with us. There’s also a range of student finance and loans available.
Course tuition fees The 2018 fee for full-time undergraduate courses is £9,250 per year. For the most up-to-date information visit: unibeds.info/UGWG_Fees (UK/EU students)
Additional course costs When considering university, it’s important to be aware of the costs; from tuition fees, to accommodation and living costs. These are all typical costs which every student can expect to pay. However, it’s also important to know about the additional course costs you are likely to incur during studies, as you factor in books, study resources and equipment into your student budget. Tuition fee loan You do not need to pay your tuition fees upfront. If you are a UK or EU student, Student Finance England will pay your fees, providing you make an application for a Tuition Fees Loan via: www.gov.uk/studentfinance EU students can’t apply online. You will need to download the application forms and apply by post. Tuition Fees Loans are also available for part-time students who are studying a first degree, and who complete a minimum of 25 per cent of the full-time course content each year.
Student maintenance loan UK students can apply for the Student Maintenance Loan online via: www.gov.uk/student-finance The amount of maintenance loan you receive will depend partly upon household income. All UK students on a full-time undergraduate course will be eligible for 47 per cent of the maintenance loan that
is not income assessed. The remaining 53 per cent is income assessed. The maintenance loan is also available to new, part-time students from 2018/19. The amount of loan available will depend on the intensity of your studies.
Repaying your loans You do not have to start repaying your loan until you have graduated. In other words, you will not have to pay a penny when you are studying. You start repayments the tax year after you have graduated and only if you earn more than £25,000 per year. These repayments are deducted automatically from your salary, so you will not need to worry about sorting it out for yourself. Your repayments will be nine per cent of anything you earn over £25,000 – not the same as nine per cent of your total income. If you decide to undertake a postgraduate degree, travel, do voluntary work, or start a job which pays less than £25,000 per year, then repayments will be suspended. All outstanding repayments will be written off after 30 years.

Applying for student finance
It is best to apply for student finance as soon as you have selected your first choice university with UCAS. That way you are sure to receive your financial support at the start of term. Make sure you fill out the student finance application form online at: www.gov.uk/student-finance. For students on teacher training, social work or healthcare courses, theapplication procedure is different. For more information visit: www.gov.uk
ACCOMMODATION Enjoy a safe, secure and friendly home from home in our fabulous range of University accommodation. We guarantee accommodation to all new students With London on Luton and Bedford’s doorstep, you can benefit from its cosmopolitan social scene but with considerably lower living costs.
Luton accommodation We have invested in state-of-the-art student accommodation. Opened in 2011 and 2012 respectively, Fitzroy and Wenlock Courts provide 852 en-suite ultra-modern study bedrooms. These fully furnished flats include a bed, desk, wardrobe, and en-suite shower pod. Each flat has a spacious kitchen/lounge area to relax with your flatmates. For those wanting a little more space and privacy, our studio flats are a great option, offering a double bed and private en-suite shower room and kitchenette. Fitzroy and Wenlock Courts also have fantastic communal lounges, a games room, media room, group study room, a fully equipped gym and laundry facilities on site. Our well-equipped halls of residence are ideally located for student life, a short walk from campus and Luton town centre.
Bedford accommodation Students at the Bedford campus have the option of living in the purpose-built Student Village or at Liberty Park, both of which are located on campus, within easy reach of the town centre and station. The Student Village has 168 bedrooms, offering a range of affordable options from study rooms with shared bathroom facilities to en-suite rooms with private shower rooms and fully equipped kitchens. Liberty Park offers 430 en-suite study bedrooms grouped in flats with fantastic communal areas, including a gym and on-site laundry facilities.
