Chapter 1 R If someone asked you to tell them a story, what would you say? Perhaps you would recount the plot of a favourite book that has always moved you in some way. Maybe you would tell them about something that happened to you. It is said that everyone has a story to tell. But perhaps it would be more accurate to say that we are all comprised of many stories – the ones we tell others, the ones we are told, the ones we tell ourselves‌

Chapter 3 R UEA’s creative writing alumni include the 2017 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, Sir Kazuo Ishiguro OBE, Anne Enright, Tracy Chevalier, Louise Doughty, Ayòbámi Adébáyò, Emma Healey, Tash Aw, John Boyne, and many, many others who have gone on to become the cherished voices of our era. Our alumni have won, or been shortlisted for, every major literary award in the UK. We have more published authors than any other UK institution. The writers that study with us go on to shape literature and the wider world, for which our programme was recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Like all our graduates, their perspectives were enthusiastically encouraged and rigorously challenged during their time at UEA. They joined us here in Norwich, a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the National Centre for Writing, of which UEA was a founding partner, as part of their journey to become the writers the world knows and loves. Through the Global Voices scholarships and the International Chairs, our aim is to transform the lives of emerging writers around the world so that they can transform the lives of others…

Alongside the Chairs we will create 50 international MA scholarships, helping UEA to establish the next generation of global writers. By helping us change the faces, and voices, of literature for the next 50 years, you will be establishing a richer literary dialogue, stronger global voices, connectivity and empathy…
