WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE GET, BUT WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE􀌢 Winston Churchill

HELP SHAPE FUTURES AND CHANGE LIVES

Donations from alumni and friends have an incredible impact. Your gift could transform the life of a low-income student, provide new opportunities to student clubs or societies, or help our researchers in the fight against disease or injustice. This issue of Alumni news shares some of the ways that the University of Suffolk is looking to support the student experience through donations. Often our initial response to a request of this sort is linked to thoughts around a large donation. Whilst large donations can clearly be extremely helpful we recognise that this is out of range for most people. However many small donations can make a big difference. If every alumni gave the equivalent of the price of twelve cups of coffee a year (one a month), the difference this could make to enriching the student experience at our university would be enormous.

Help shape futures and change lives

Gifts to the University are transformational. With your help, we invest in first class teaching and learning facilities, world class research and improving the everyday lives of students through sports and societies.

We currently run a disbursement fund which our Students’ Union and staff can apply for in support of to a specific improvement project such as transforming learning in the classroom or additional support for experiential experiences. This has recently led to investment in a new kit for the Students’ Union Women’s Football Team and a minibus to ensure students are able to engage with the university sports leagues. This is all part of the university experience but not affordable for all without additional support. As you read this edition, please reflect on your time at the University of Suffolk and think how it could have been enhanced through small but impactful additional support. As one of our students said recently “Somebody’s donation made a difference” Next year that somebody could be you. Professor Helen Langton Vice-Chancellor

Student and Telemark Skier I’m a part-time student in Sport and Exercise Science and compete full time on the FIS World Cup Telemark (skiing) tour each winter. Since starting my studies I’ve achieved 3rd place in the world rankings and 5 victories in the last 2 seasons. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support I receive as a sport scholar as well

as the flexible studying hours. I am able to use the lab, with help from physiologist Marco Beato for my physical testing as well as continued psychological counselling and training with my sport psychologist, Manos Georgiadis. Their expertise, and my studies, have been life changing.

Lecturer in Midwifery

Within the midwifery team we were delighted to receive funding towards receiving a new PROMPT simulation mannequin as well as the opportunity for four of the lecturers to go on ‘PROMPT Train the Trainer’ training. Midwifery course the

students have a High Risk and Complex Midwifery module. It is fundamental that the students are able to learn and understand the management of cases outside of the scope of normal midwifery prior to going out into practice.

Students’ Union Intern (Comms and Events) The Students’ Union placement scheme has opened my eyes to the vast opportunities within the University. I simply enjoyed being a part of the Students’ Union team, developing skills which will help in the future indefinitely. I applied for

the placement because I wanted to get more involved in the inner workings of the University and to broaden my future career ambitions. There were absolutely no negatives—I enjoyed the experience immensely.
