Advance your career

Competitive edge

There are many reasons to study at postgraduate level. It enables you to delve deeper into a subject area to develop greater expertise and some career paths, such as teaching, require a postgraduate qualification in order to enter the profession. It also conveys to potential employers your dedication and commitment to learning and mastery of your subject area.

Studying for a postgraduate qualification provides the opportunity to enhance your employability and help you stand out in a highly competitive graduate employment market. You will gain specialist skills and subject knowledge, as well as developing your transferable skills in areas such as communication, critical thinking, data analysis, problem solving, project management and research – all skills that employers’ value. You will gain an edge over other applicants when applying for jobs and the chance to explore new opportunities, such as moving your career in a different direction or having the confidence to apply for higher level managerial positions.

For professionals, postgraduate study can provide a method to advance your career. Gaining advanced skills and knowledge can open doors, increasing your level of responsibility or creating new opportunities. Career progression in some sectors, such as academia and scientific research, can depend on postgraduate qualifications.

11

12 Relevant to you,  relevant to employers   Many of our postgraduate programmes  have a strong vocational focus, designed to be easily applied to the relevant sector you are working in. The PgD Human Resource Management, for example, enables you to apply for Corporate Membership

of the CIPD as a registered HR practitioner. Research undertaken as part of the PgD  or MSc Human Resource Management can be related to the industry in which you are working, providing benefit to both the student and employer.

Why choose postgraduate study?

Broad strategic knowledge

Advancement  in academia   Although many students choose postgraduate study for career advancement or as a method of specialisation, it can also lead to a career in academia or research. Postgraduate study provides the next step towards achieving a doctorate or a professorial title, where you become recognised in your field.

It may be that you are planning for your future career. The strategic knowledge gained at postgraduate level across many programmes provides the basis for career progression, but also enables you to be at the forefront of your field. The MBA, one of the most sought-after qualifications in the world,  offers sophisticated business knowledge at a senior level of management and significantly advances leadership skills. Undertaking this qualification demonstrates a determination to succeed and will bolster your confidence. The MSc International Business and Management provides the opportunity for those without managerial experience or background in business to gain the necessary knowledge and skills, giving you a competitive edge.

STUDYING AS A PART-TIME STUDENT Click here to watch

Postgraduate study equips you to contribute at a high level within commercial situations and research environments, through the broadening of your knowledge and/ or development of expertise and higher cognitive skills. For example, you may debate the latest research topics and apply theories to the practical resolution of complex situations and inform critical discussion.

Commitment and support Postgraduate courses demand a commitment from students to undertake significant independent study, developing a range of higher-level research skills with support and feedback from course tutors and peers. You will have the chance to get to know fellow students from a wide range of cultures and nationalities and be exposed to many different personal beliefs and philosophies.

Why choose postgraduate study?

BEING A POSTGRADUATE STUDENT Block and Blend Some of our postgraduate courses are now delivered using a block and blend approach. Blocks of learning are normally constructed around single modules, enabling you to deep dive into the topic area for a period of perhaps five-six weeks. This is then followed by the assessment. You will be taught through face to face and online learning activities which link the learning through and across the learning blocks. If you are a full-time student on non-block courses you will continue to study more than one module at once, across the length of a semester, with the assessment at the end. At the University of Suffolk, we are fully committed to supporting our postgraduate students, helping you make the best use of all the opportunities available, and enabling you to fulfil your aspirations.

We offer a range of support services to postgraduate students, including dedicated Academic Skills Advisors and Librarians who can support you to develop the research skills required to study at this level.

AWA Awards

We offer a range of postgraduate opportunities, including Masters degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates, along with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. Employers play an important role in the development of new and existing courses, and we are committed to building lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with businesses.

ARDS Masters Many of our postgraduate taught degrees lead to the award of a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Research (MRes) or Master of Business Administration (MBA). They are usually studied full-time over one year or part-time over two to five years. Applicants will usually hold the equivalent of an Honours degree from a UK university, though other qualifications of a similar standing will be considered.

Postgraduate Certificates Postgraduate Certificates are ideal for prospective students who wish to undertake further study but only want to commit for a short period of time. They also provide a progression route to Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters. They are offered as standalone courses developed for sector specific professionals. All are taught either full or part-time depending on the programme.

Postgraduate Diplomas

Part-time study

We offer a number of Postgraduate Diplomas. Some consist of the same modules and examinations as a Masters degree, but without the dissertation, and can be used as credits to progress to a Masters qualification. Others are offered as stand-alone qualifications developed for sector-specific professionals and carry accreditation from professional bodies. All are taught either full or part-time depending on the programme.

We know that there are many reasons for wanting to study part-time, whether it is to fit around your family commitments, boost your career prospects, or allow you to earn while you learn. It can offer a more flexible approach to learning, allowing you to complete your studies over a longer period. Each course information page outlines the course duration and options available.

Student profile

SASHA MURDOCH MSc Applications of Psychology I completed a BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology degree at Suffolk because of my interest in people, I wanted to learn about individual differences and why people behave the way they do. With the knowledge gained, I thought I would be better equipped to support people from all walks of life. I applied for the MSc Applications of Psychology with the aim of becoming a psychologist or counsellor. I have enjoyed all the modules in my postgraduate studies and have really felt the step up from undergraduate level. The course offers a wide variety of learning approaches from seminar debates to diagnosis scenarios and practical placements. It has changed my view of the world and empowered me to have passionate but controlled discussion. I don’t think I would have gone to university if I had to travel very far as it would be very stressful as a single parent to travel out of town to study while raising two young children. I feel very lucky to live close to a university that offers such good quality courses including the courses I wanted

Graduating with 2:1 and continuing to Masters level study is not bad for someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, who wanted to give up in the second year. I’ve persevered and progressed thanks to the amazing support from lecturers, friends and oneto-one support. The whole experience has been so empowering… If I can do it then so can you!

This course can only be undertaken by nurses with live registration on Part 1 of the Register at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and who have successfully completed a relevant postgraduate diploma. It provides a progression route specifically for those students who successfully completed a PgD in Community Nursing which either did or did not incorporate a definitive research methods module. COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY*

This PgC will allow you to increase your knowledge and skills in the specialist area of Computed Tomography (CT). This is often a challenging area of practice due to the advancing technology, the rising demand for services and autonomous role of the practitioner. It is anticipated that this course will allow you the opportunity to combine theoretical and clinical knowledge to your current practice which will underpin the advanced practitioner roles required as part of the four-tier structure within CT. During this course, you will learn the theoretical and technical aspects of CT which will be underpinned by work-based learning in practice. You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of the role of the radiographer within CT whilst developing an appreciation of service development, managing effective service delivery and patient-focused care. The programme takes an integrated approach to modular learning and the teaching strategy reflects this. A range of techniques based on blended learning are employed, for example interactive lectures, student-led seminars, group work, online learning environments, problem-based learning/evidence-based learning, workshops, case studies and clinical experience. You will be actively encouraged throughout the programme to connect theory with practice, which is crucial in any vocational programme. Preparing for your future: All students will already hold posts across the healthcare sector, nonetheless completion of this programme will enable students to progress into advanced practitioner/lead roles in CT. Students completing the PgC element of the programme will be encouraged to apply for Advanced Practitioner Accreditation with the Society and College of Radiographers.

DAISY KNOCK MA Criminology: Crime and Victimisation I work for the Suffolk Youth Justice Service and felt it would really benefit my practical knowledge to be able to apply theory to the reasoning and justification of offending. Having looked at the MAs available, this one stood out because the University is fresh, welcoming and the lecturers are involved in designing the course area; I knew they would be very knowledgeable about each subject. Thankfully my work allowed me a flexible working pattern so I could continue working full-time while studying.

Student profiles

A Masters requires a new level of independent learning but also gives you more freedom to make informed opinions. I like the diversity of the lecturers and how their different experiences compliment each other, this really allowed me to broaden my knowledge base. I’d advise new students to make use of tutorials, it really helps to build communication and relationships with the lecturers – they are there to help you. Throw yourself into the seminars and critical discussions and just enjoy the experience!

BA (Hons) Dance

I left school at 15 with no GCSEs and feeling there was no hope for the future. I had my daughter at 18 then my son at 20, and it was then that I realised I needed to make my future count. I graduated from my BSc (Hons) Criminology in 2015 with a First and having just finished my MA, I have been seconded to a new role and even been able to negotiate a pay rise due to my increased application of knowledge from the course. Everyone’s path is different, just because you haven’t followed your education path straight from school, it is never too late – I feel so proud of my achievements.

MSc

(Progression Route)

There is an increasing requirement for HR professionals to be able to demonstrate that their practices are embedded in an organisation’s strategy, and fully geared towards achieving better business performance. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to progress from existing postgraduate qualifications, in particular the Postgraduate Diploma in HRM, in order to achieve a Masters qualification. Students will undertake a taught module in research methods, and then a dissertation. The dissertation must relate to a strategic human resources issue, and in most cases will involve research undertaken in the student’s own organisation. This will provide the opportunity for students to undertake in-depth research into an issue which is of genuine interest to themselves in their professional development, and which will also be of benefit to their employer. This programme aims to develop the analytical and strategic skills of students, in order to provide them with the ability to respond to the challenges of the global business environment with strategically focused solutions. Graduates of the MSc Human Resource Management are able to demonstrate to employers that they can research and resolve organisational issues at a strategic level, which sets them apart from the competition in the increasingly competitive HR careers market. There is the possibility of progression to roles such as HR Manager or Director. Previous graduates have progressed to senior level positions in a wide range of organisations across the UK and beyond.

LIZZIE MAPPLEBECK MBA I love my job, so I didn’t apply for the MBA as a ‘spring board’ into a new role, it was the broad curriculum that appealed to me; a wide breadth of learning that touches each part of the business world. I wanted to develop my skills to assist with progression towards my bigger goals such as leadership, setting out strategy, direction and organisational culture. The support I received to do the MBA as an apprenticeship was great – dedicated staff to answer any questions was a bonus and meetings with my line manager to ensure my learning remains relevant.

Student profile

The course has provided me with the additional skills, knowledge and understanding to enable me to take a more wholesome and systemic approach to work. I now approach complex business cases with a more confident and comprehensive outlook. Networking with lecturers, professors and other students has been hugely beneficial both from an academic and a professional perspective. I have learned so much particularly in class discussions and debate. The University has made me feel so welcome, it treats its students with respect and is very inclusive. Fitting in the MBA with

full-time work and a family was a daunting prospect but having timetables published in advance and clear dates for critical deadlines has helped. Regular updates and newsletters are circulated so as a student you always know what is going on and what extra support is available should you need it. I have been so impressed with the library and learning services, they bend over backwards to help. Oh, and the on-site Paddy and Scott’s coffee shops are great too!

HARRISON BULLETT MSc Regenerative Medicine Being from the local area, I was familiar with the University and had heard a lot of good things about it but it was the course that really made the decision for me to apply here. It seemed interesting, unique and focused around a cutting-edge field of medicine. It was also an ideal follow on from my undergraduate degree in Biomedicine that I had just gained at another university. I particularly enjoyed the ‘Independent Study’ module where we were encouraged to research a topic we found particularly interesting and present our findings, as well as the ‘Cell Therapy and Tissue Engineering’ and ‘Stem Cell Biology’ modules. My passion for these areas has developed over time and I’m keen to continue studying by applying for a PhD, however I’m also interested in commercial or NHS laboratory roles. The University of Suffolk has a different feel to other universities. Being a smaller and younger university, it feels less formal and more personal. All of the

BA (Hons) Dance

lecturers, particularly the Course Leader are approachable and helpful. Due to the number of students on the course, we get to know each other and the lecturers really well which allows us to get very detailed, specific feedback on our assignments and progress. The library service is great, with the subject librarians offering great advice and one-toone sessions. The University has a great location on the marina and Suffolk has a great mix of larger towns and rural areas, my favourite place is the sea front at Felixstowe.

Student profile

ALEXANDRA JENNER MSc Regenerative Medicine I was working in the pharmaceutical industry when I decided to go for it and apply for a full-time Masters course. I chose Regenerative Medicine because the course modules interested me, it is relevant to my job and the University is local to where I live therefore convenient to combine with family life. The course content is based on very recent scientific discoveries related to stem cells which are relevant to changes in the delivery of personalised medicine. Studying a Masters has given me the opportunity to improve my study skills, develop research strategy and tap into the expertise of the lecturers. Learning new ways of doing things has really increased my confidence too. The size of the cohort allows us to have a personal experience, especially with the laboratory practicals and having experienced students from the course helping as laboratory assistants was really valuable. I’ve also enjoyed the peer support from our WhatsApp groups.

There is a lot of support for students at the University. Personally, I really benefitted from the ‘Critical Thinking’ and ‘Postgraduate Writing Skills’ courses as well as additional Maths support offered by the Learning Services team. Whilst on the course I was employed part-time to mentor Year 11 students for GCSE Maths and after completing my course I’m hoping to continue academic research by applying for a PhD. My advice to anyone joining the University is to get involved with additional activities with students from your course and support each other.

MSc

Regenerative Medicine encompasses many areas of life sciences and medicine and promises to address several unmet clinical needs, whilst also reducing healthcare costs. Regenerative Medicine is about repairing damaged, diseased and worn-out tissues or organs by using cells as therapies, including stem cells, delivered often in combination with bio-scaffolds, or using molecules that stimulate innate capacities of tissue repair. Regenerative Medicine involves understanding of basic research, in vitro analysis, preclinical testing, product conceptualisation/ development, consideration of regulatory and ethical frameworks, and navigation of intellectual property issues. The course will explore these areas together with providing an understanding of the continuously arising fundamental biological questions in the field, propelling science advancement, with the development of solutions translated ‘from the bench to the bedside’. A multidisciplinary approach is utilised to help graduates achieve critical knowledge and training in the biological and chemical basis of tissue regeneration, stem cell biology, and health-related biotechnologies. In addition, our students benefit from state-ofthe art laboratory facilities and intensive lab-based training: our Biotechnology Unit Laboratory was one of five international finalists for the RegMedNet Award for Cultivating Excellence (ACE) 2018. You will also conduct an independent piece of research as part of a 30,000 word dissertation, where you will put into practice the methods and theoretical concepts you have been taught. While an MRes is a research-oriented degree aimed at training independent researchers, it is important to offer you a more discipline-specific experience. For that this programme offers you two options for obtaining a full degree. As a first option, you have the choice to select a discipline-specific pathway mapped onto one of our existing taught postgraduate programmes (MA or MSc) within the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Upon graduation you will be awarded a MRes Social Sciences and Humanities degree with the pathway acknowledged, as follows (depending on the pathway you choose):

Our courses

• MRes SSH (Childhood) • MRes SSH (Criminology) • MRes SSH (Education) • MRes SSH (History) • MRes SSH (Psychological Therapies) • MRes SSH (Psychology) As a second choice, if you do not want to enrol on a specific pathway mapped on an existing MA/MSc, and rather prefer to focus on your own area of specialism, you could enrol in a 20 credits Independent Learning Project module, in lieu of the module from an existing Masters programme, in which, supported by your Academic Advisor, you can pursue a topic in an area of specialism of your choice, within the disciplines of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. You will be awarded a general MRes Social Sciences and Humanities, without a pathway.
