Known for its hospitable and friendly nature, Suffolk has a growing student community all making the most of the diverse urban centres, coastal resorts and historic towns. Come and explore the beautiful surroundings of this exciting county, there really is something for everyone.

Suffolk is home to numerous arts, food and music festivals including Latitude Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Pulse, Ip-Art, SPILL, and Bury Festival; many of which are becoming highlights in the UK festival calendar. CATION University of Suffolk The University is located on the stunning Ipswich Waterfront, which is home to a lively restaurant and bar scene and offers exciting entertainment, from sailing opportunities in the marina to performances at DanceEast. The Waterfront also hosts the Maritime Festival, which sees 55,000 visitors all enjoying the best entertainment, food and drink Ipswich has to offer.

The main campus in Ipswich is located near to Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club, and within easy reach of Ipswich’s four theatres, which offer a diverse range of arts productions.

Our approach to delivery for all programmes puts our online learning environment, Brightspace, at the heart of the learning experience. We take a blended approach to course design, meaning that you will experience learning which includes rich online activities and resources, live streamed and recorded lectures, and on-campus seminars and tutorials.

The blend will differ across courses, depending on the nature of the subject matter and skills you are expected to develop and may also include problem based learning, using the challenges and complexities of practical situations to drive learning and subject exploration.

All courses provide students with tutorial support, through which you will be encouraged to consider your own development in order to make best use of the learning opportunities available. Among its many facilities, the Arts Building has painting, sculpture, drawing and print studios, installation and video spaces, and a film studio, as well as industry-standard studios, dark rooms and digital suites specific to photography.

Located in The Atrium, the VERT (Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training) suite is just one of many specialist facilities.

This immersive 3D training system allows radiotherapy students to become familiar with industry-standard technology and treat virtual patients. Other specialist teaching facilities in this building include Psychology, Games Design, Network and Software laboratories. The Atrium is also the home of the Suffolk Business School as well as a dedicated business innovation space, the Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre (IWIC) and our 3D Productivity Suite with a range of 3D printers.

Across the campus there are a variety of cafés where you can relax and have something to eat or drink. Paddy & Scott’s coffee is served in both the Waterfront Building and The Atrium, or for a more relaxed vibe, the student bar Cult Café is located on the ground floor of the James Hehir Building.

The James Hehir Building includes the latest purpose-built clinical skills, sports and exercise laboratories, as well as specialist bioscience teaching and research facilities. These have been created to give you the tools you need to achieve your full potential. The Innovation Hub, also located in the James Hehir Building, provides a range of Fujitsu technology including tablets, notebooks, laptops, desktop PCs and workstations. These systems run on the latest Intel® processor technologies, providing you with the opportunity to hone your digital skills.

At our main campus in Ipswich, the Waterfront Building has a large auditorium and lecture theatres as well as numerous teaching rooms for small or large groups.

There are also open study areas on all floors to enable flexible learning.

A new student social space opened in 2019 in the Library Building at the main campus in Ipswich. The joint venture between the University and the Students’ Union (SU) provides students with a social learning facility equipped with table tennis and pool tables, a kitchenette, social space for activities and meetings, group working pods and areas to relax. There is also a ‘Grab and Go’ shop run by the SU for students to purchase clothing, drinks and snacks.

The Library and Learning Services team provide you with the resources you need for reading and research in all areas of your study including; millions of electronic articles, streamed broadcasts and other electronic resources, as well as traditional media such as books.

Our next generation online learning environment, ‘Brightspace’, transforms online learning by providing you with an individual learning path that includes flexible pacing, and offers an adaptive learning system that breaks free of traditional one-size-fits-all learning models.

You can utilise study spaces, IT facilities and borrow from all of the libraries across our network of partner colleges, including the library at our main campus in Ipswich, which is open seven days a week, all year round.

We work in partnership with a range of partners across Suffolk and the UK to offer the opportunity for students to study at a location near to them and obtain a recognised University of Suffolk award.

Our team of Academic Skills Advisors, Learning and Teaching Librarians and Digital Learning Designers deliver a range of workshops, both face-to-face and online, which are targeted at developing key academic skills such as referencing, academic reading and critical writing.

Students can study a range of higher education qualifications including Honours and Foundation degrees, and Masters programmes with many courses developed in collaboration with local businesses.

Individual support is available at our main campus in Ipswich and can be booked online with our team who can offer you advice and guidance on all aspects of academic work. This includes assignment help, maths and statistics, research skills and more.

CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT DigiTech Centre

The Hold

The DigiTech Centre is due to open in early 2021 will become a hub for digital research and training. The result of a collaboration between the University of Suffolk and BT, with £6.5m funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the Centre will provide training in cuttingedge digital skills for people looking to pursue careers in the nationally-important information and communications technology (ICT) sector, as well as fuelling high-tech businesses who increasingly require access to a talented technology workforce.

In partnership with Suffolk County Council, the University of Suffolk has developed The Hold, a new purposebuilt heritage research centre. The Hold houses Suffolk’s exceptional historic masterpieces including a Royal Charter of King Henry I dating back to 1119.

The DigiTech Centre will be based at Adastral Park and support the delivery of our ICT and Digital Creative courses.

Specialist high-tech laboratories form the heart of the new centre, jointly used by University staff, students and businesses from Adastral Park and across the region.

The Hold supports research, teaching and public engagement and allows researchers from different disciplines to engage with the history of Suffolk. The £20m cuttingedge teaching spaces and public resource are part of the University’s main campus in Ipswich, providing students with a contemporary new learning environment and facilities within an immersive building exploring the memory bank of Suffolk.

Health and Wellbeing will house two floors of brand new clinical simulation facilities, a new sports and exercise science suite, counselling/ physiotherapy clinic rooms, the Academy of Integrated Care and the Suffolk Institute of Health and Wellbeing Research.

Launched in 2016, The Games Hub has helped graduates to showcase their games through the Tranzfuser scheme.

The Games Hub, run at the IWIC, is a voluntary programme for third year Games Design and Programming students and is being extended to include students from all courses.

Entrepreneurship

The programme provides an innovative and creative environment for students to learn more about business skills and what is needed when setting up a business or becoming self-employed. These student entrepreneurs are then able to put what they have learnt at university directly into practice in the industry. This enables the transition from university to working in the industry to be seamless.

Suffolk Centre for Female Entrepreneurship

Our 3D Productivity Suite has a range of 3D printers, including a new industry standard printer with the capability to work with almost any plastic, now and in the future, for applications across all disciplines. If you can dream it, you can build it, in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing methods. These facilities are available to all students and staff regardless of their course and can support a range of interesting projects.

The Suffolk Centre for Female Entrepreneurship launched in October 2017 as a key partner of the IWIC. The Centre is a unique resource regionally and nationally within UK Innovation Centres, aiming to provide a leadership role and knowledge base for the support and promotion of female entrepreneurship, innovation within business and a reduction in gender inequality across all business sectors. The Centre supports students and graduates to develop their entrepreneurial skills, empowering them to create, plan and manage their own businesses and inclusivity.

Professional studies and CPD

The School of Health and Sports Sciences has worked in partnership with commissioners and employers in the development of health-specific CPD and postgraduate programmes, such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Practitioner – District Nursing and Masters programmes in Community Nursing and Public Health Nursing.

The School of Social Sciences and Humanities has developed CPD provision relating to teaching, including a selection of Subject Knowledge Enhancement short courses. It is also possible to undertake individual credit modules from some of our postgraduate programmes, which can contribute towards a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate.

Postgraduate Certificates Postgraduate Certificates are ideal for prospective students who wish to undertake further study but only want to commit for a short period of time. They also provide a progression route to Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters. They are offered as standalone courses developed for sector-specific professionals. Many of our postgraduate taught degrees lead to the award of a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Business Administration (MBA).

They are usually studied full-time over one year or part-time over two to five years. Applicants will usually hold the equivalent of an Honours degree from a UK university, though other qualifications of similar standing will be considered.

We recognise that there are many reasons for wanting to study part-time, whether it is to fit around your family commitments, boost your career prospects, or allow you to earn while you learn. It can offer a more flexible approach to learning, allowing you to complete your studies over a longer period.

ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE This programme of study has been designed to meet the needs of a diverse range of health and social care professionals including nurses, midwives, health visitors and allied health professionals.

This course is designed to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills related to advanced clinical practice. ADVANCED PRACTICE AND REPORTING IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY COLONOGRAPHY This course will allow students to develop the knowledge and expertise to advanced practitioner level in Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) and has been approved by the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR).

The modular approach will enable students to gain skills in performing CTC examinations and the reporting of CTC examinations and images.

The course will include underpinning knowledge of large bowel anatomy, pathology and physiology as well as the practical performance of CTC and producing a report. It will also introduce students to the principles of developing a CTC service.

The course is ideally suited to those about to or who are currently undertaking CTC examinations in their Trust hospital. It is a flexible course allowing for stand-alone modules to be taken or completion of all three 20 credit modules to obtain the full PgC. The course will be jointly run by the University of Suffolk and Peterborough City Hospital.

MSc Applications of Psychology

Student profile

My long-term goal has always been to become a clinical psychologist. After studying BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology at the University of Suffolk, it became clear that I had the qualification but lacked experience. My undergraduate supervisor recommended studying for a Masters as a way to continue my research and gain vital experience via a placement.

Studying at postgraduate level has offered me the flexibility to balance work alongside study. As a full-time student I have two days of teaching, which gives me the rest of the week to fulfil my placement and gain clinical experience by volunteering for the charity Mind and working in a mental health hospital. I have to manage my time effectively, but I feel as though I have gained more control over my learning and I’m able to witness first-hand how the theory I learn in the classroom is applied in real-world settings. It is this deeper

level of understanding that has helped me to strengthen the clinical skills needed to achieve my ultimate career goals.

During my undergraduate degree, I would have told myself I was crazy to return to study so soon. But after graduating, I felt lost not having a project to work on. I’ve realised that I thrive on challenge and having a deadline to aim for.

If you’re up for challenging yourself and you’re pursuing a career that will benefit from a Masters, then don’t hesitate. Get organised and expect assignments you have never done before. If you have the opportunity to do a placement, make the most of it – the practical experience is invaluable and will help with future job opportunities or further study.

APPLICATIONS OF PSYCHOLOGY For those who are eager to expand their knowledge of psychology further, this course is ideal. It is also an appropriate progression for those who are interested in vocational psychology roles, which increasingly require doctorate training. With a number of roles now having this requirement, there is a need for students to obtain experience and knowledge in order to gain a place on the doctorate programmes. The additional experience and knowledge gained from completing this Masters, better equips graduates to compete for a place on a doctorate programme.

The four mandatory core modules include Research Design and Statistics, Clinical Applications in Psychology, Psychological and Neuropsychological Assessment, and the Dissertation. A broad spectrum of optional modules provide the opportunity to identify a specialism which may include Educational Psychology, Health Psychology in Practice, Enhancing Human Performance in Sport, Applications of Counselling Psychology, and Psychology in Practice (a placement module).

It is a requirement to have a Bachelors (Honours) degree in Psychology for this programme, however, if you have a degree in another discipline but are looking to make a career change into Psychology, you can apply to undertake a Graduate Conversion Course in Psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society. CHILDHOOD STUDIES The MA Childhood Studies course takes an informed, critical, and dynamic approach to the academic study of childhood and encourages students to develop their own interests and professional practice.

We draw on perspectives from sociology, social policy, geography, anthropology and history, and critically examine the changing landscape of childhood in modern society.

The course is informed by the United Nations Convention Rights of the Child (UNCRC) framework and is committed to a child-centred philosophy. Modules reflect on the principles of protecting the rights and interests of children, the diverse and global conditions of childhood, and the increasing importance of their participation in society.

This taught Masters programme uses a flexible, blended approach to learning; face-to-face lectures, seminars and tutorial support are complemented by online resources, interactive learning tools and self-study materials.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY AND COUNSELLING The MSc programme in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Counselling offers advanced professional and clinical training for students who wish to practice as psychotherapists offering cognitive behaviour therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

Having this dual-track approach to understanding mental health widens opportunities to work in a broad range of mental health settings, including statutory, voluntary and private. The course enables the capacity to work from different theoretical approaches, understanding research and its application to clinical theory and practice.

A dissertation will allow you to explore your integrative approach to therapy and evidence-based practice. The course will enable you to work towards applications for British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) registration and accreditation, and British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) accreditation.

There is a substantial evidence base for offering cognitive therapies for a range of psychological diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This MSc also offers you the opportunity to practice approaches to time limited psychodynamic therapy with an evidence base for depression.

COMMUNITY NURSING (PROGRESSION ROUTE) This course can only be undertaken by nurses with live registration on Part 1 of the Register at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and who have successfully completed a relevant postgraduate diploma.

It provides a progression route specifically for those students who successfully completed a PgD in Community Nursing which did not incorporate a definitive research methods module.

The aims of the course are: — To enable students to demonstrate mastery of a subject relevant

to their own practice through the process of research — To enable students to critically evaluate the impact of research

CREATIVE AND CRITICAL WRITING This MA course is ideally suited to those who want to focus on their passion for creative writing whilst engaging with the most up-to-date debates in critical theory.

Designed to give you the opportunity to specialise as writers, critics and practitioners, the course offers you the chance to nurture your development as a reflective scholar and enhance your abilities as a creative writer, thinker and communicator.

Entry requirements Hold a Bachelors (Honours) degree at 2:2 (or above) or equivalent qualification in a relevant, cognate discipline. However, relevant work and life experience will be considered.

You will experience learning in the interconnected fields of creative writing and critical thinking. The MA combines practicebased learning and a choice of specialisms in historical fiction, children’s literature, adaptations, a writer-in-residence module and a final dissertation which will be a substantial body of professional-standard work in fiction, non-fiction, or critical writing.

Any of our optional modules can be completed individually as CPD opportunities prior to course enrolment.

The course also supports you in a number of professional contexts such as teaching, publishing, editing and professional writing, as well as enhancing life skills and providing access to doctoral-level study.

CRIMINOLOGY: CRIME AND VICTIMISATION The MA Criminology: Crime and Victimisation addresses contemporary issues within the study of crime, community safety and criminal justice.

The course will enable you to develop specialist knowledge of the current trends and historical debates surrounding crime causation, crime control and regulation in the UK and internationally.

The MSc will be delivered at the University’s new DigiTech Centre, where you will have access to new state of the art computing research laboratories. EDUCATION STUDIES Masters level study is viewed by many as being essential for career progression. The MA Education Studies supports professional development in education and related fields. The course provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the current educational landscape and to engage with relevant wider theories and issues. The programme will help you to develop your own critical thinking and hone higher level skills.

You can undertake either a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC), a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) or a full Masters in Education Studies.

Optional modules allow the pursuit of different routes, including leadership and management and early career development or to focus on areas of interest relevant to your own professional practice.

You will have the opportunity to focus on an area of particular interest to you and will undertake modules supporting the development of a research project and dissertation in that area of interest.

I am completing my PhD full-time and I’m treating it like a job, with the campus as my ‘place of work’. My relationship with the tutors has changed and I feel more like a colleague than a student. The University of Suffolk is geographically close to both work and home, so logistically it has worked well. The course has provided me with additional skills, knowledge and understanding of the business world to enable me to take a more wholesome and systemic approach to work. Fitting in the MBA with full time work was a daunting prospect but having timetables published in advance and clear dates for critical deadlines has helped with planning around my work and family commitments.

I have the opportunity to network with lecturers, professors and other MBA students and have learnt so much from my peers, particularly in class discussions and debates. The course is very interactive with the lecturers introducing topics and guiding discussions, providing the platform for sharing learning and experience from the real world.

I really love my job so I didn’t apply for the MBA to give me a ‘spring board’ into a new role, it was the broad curriculum that appealed to me. My main reason to do the MBA was the development of my soft skills and progression towards my bigger goals: leadership, empathy, setting out strategy, direction and organisational culture, as well as the practicalities of business including improving productivity and managing change.

RADIOGRAPHIC REPORTING OF THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN This course is designed for radiographers wishing to expand their scope of practice and develop the theoretical and clinical knowledge base required to interpret chest and abdomen radiographs and construct clear and concise medical image reports in line with local protocols.

The course consists of two modules during which you will learn the theoretical principles of interpretation of chest and abdomen radiographs which alongside work-based learning in your department, will develop your competencies to provide clinical reports of chest and abdomen radiographs.

Successful completion of the course will also help evidence your role as an advanced clinical practitioner in relation to Health Education England’s framework for Advanced Clinical Practice (2017). The course is also approved by the Society and College of Radiographers.

This course is jointly run by the University of Suffolk and the Norwich Radiology Academy where most of the teaching will be delivered. This is a facility designed specifically to teach radiology and offers access to a picture archiving and communication system linked to image reporting workstations.

I am currently studying Regenerative Medicine and I decided to embark on this course as I have had an interest in genetic engineering since college. When I first started searching for universities that offer a Masters for Regenerative Medicine, I realised there were not many universities or countries that offered this course.

Furthermore, even though one university in my country, Sri Lanka, had advertised they would be starting a similar programme I was not very confident about the quality and standard as they were just starting out, therefore I began looking for my course of interest in other parts of the world.

Practitioners who undertake this programme will be highly motivated individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to developing District Nursing practice based on the integration of critically appraised evidence with professional expertise. It is expected that students will have a wealth of previous experience which will be utilised, challenged and built upon. The programme embraces a facilitative approach to learning, co-ordinated to support the practice element at the centre of the programme.

All modules are mandatory and are mapped against the Standards for Specialist Education and Practice (District Nursing) (endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council) and also mapped against the education and practice standards developed for District Nursing by the Queens Nursing Institute (2015).

DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS As an Apprentice you will split your time between university study and the workplace, but will be employed throughout. Depending on the level of the apprenticeship, you will get a Higher, Foundation, Bachelors or Masters degree while earning a wage, as well as getting real on-the-job experience.

Our Degree Apprenticeships at Level 6 provide the opportunity to gain a full Bachelors degree, and at Level 7 a Masters degree. For students considering postgraduate study, a Degree Apprenticeship at Level 7 is an excellent progression route.

Studying as an Apprentice, you are employed as a member of staff within an organisation and have the associated employment rights and benefits, but you are also a full-time student.

Apprentices have access to all facilities at the University to successfully complete their apprenticeship and will undertake projects and assignments that are relevant to their job role, organisation and sector. Our Apprenticeship students study alongside apprentices from a range of industries and organisations, providing excellent networking opportunities.

Students facing financial difficulty can apply to the Financial Support Fund (FSF).

The FSF is administered by the University based on guidance from the National Association of Student Money Advisors.

Accommodation

The on-campus halls of residence, Athena Hall, is located just 300 metres from the Waterfront Building and adjacent to the James Hehir Building. Local shops and amenities are close by and the town centre is just a 10-minute walk away.

Housing up to 590 students, Athena Hall offers a mixture of cluster flats and studio rooms, the latter are more popular with mature students or student couples.

Events

University of Suffolk students automatically become a member of the Students’ Union (SU). The SU exists to represent the student voice via our democratic structures, with the roles of President, Vice-President, Student Officers and Course Representatives available for you to put yourself forward for. It’s all about making your voice heard so you can lead change that improves the student experience for everyone.

We start the term with Freshers’ Week and run activities throughout the year, from pub and club nights to student family get-togethers, cultural events, and an end of year Summer Ball. We know everyone’s different so whether you are balancing your studies with work, a student parent, a party animal, or international student we want there to be something for you. All our events are inspired by student feedback so if what you want isn’t in our programme, let us know and we’ll get it started together.

Our role is to enhance the student experience by offering a range of studentled social and sporting activities to our members. We participate in competitive sports including football, netball and futsal via the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) scheme.

Our weekly social sport programme offers low cost fitness, including Yoga, Zumba, Badminton and Pilates. We work closely with the University and local partners to initiate student packages for local gyms and swimming pools.

We encourage you to gain a wealth of experience by getting involved. Your time here is unique and the SU will help you experience it to the fullest.

Fees and scholarships

International students

Check our webpages for full details about our tuition fees and scholarships. uos.ac.uk/feesandscholarships EU students and students from EEA-EFTA or Switzerland who start a new course in England after August 2021 will no longer be eligible for home fee status or eligible to apply for student loans. Instead, each UK university will set its own fees for EU students.

For 2021 the University of Suffolk will offer a range of Scholarships providing alternative financial support in the absence of student loans.

Getting started We run an induction programme specifically for our international students to help you get settled in the UK. You can meet other students and find out more about living and studying here, while the SU offers a number of clubs and societies for you to join.

Visas From 1 January 2021 the UK’s new pointsbased immigration system will come into force. The new and improved Student route opened for applications on 5 October 2020.

It will replace and improve the existing Tier 4 (General) Student route, making a more streamlined experience for sponsoring institutions and students and will be open to EEA students as well as international students. EEA students resident in the UK on or before 31 December 2020, should not apply through this route. They, and their family, are eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme and have until 30 June 2021 to do so.
