WHY CHOO POSTGRAD STUDY? Join a diverse, growing and aspiring postgraduate community at the University of Suffolk.
OSE DUATE On our postgraduate programmes you will receive excellent teaching, delivered by academics established in their field of study. Our lecturers have extensive specialist knowledge and are actively engaged in research and scholarly activity. Learning at postgraduate level enables you to focus on an area of study in order to obtain expert knowledge and skills. If you are a graduate of the University, a scholarship may be available for some postgraduate courses. Further details about the Alumni Postgraduate Loyalty Scheme are available on page 85 or by visiting uos.ac.uk/alumni
There are many reasons to study at postgraduate level. It enables you to delve deeper into a subject area to develop greater expertise and some career paths such as teaching, require a postgraduate qualification to enter the profession. It also conveys to potential employers your ability to study and research at a higher level, demonstrating your dedication and commitment to learning and mastery of your subject area. For professionals, postgraduate study can provide a method to advance your career. Gaining advanced skills and knowledge can open doors, increasing your level of responsibility or creating new opportunities. Career progression in some sectors, such as academia and scientific research, can depend on postgraduate qualifications.

BENEFITS OF POSTGRADUATE STUDY Competitive edge Studying for a postgraduate qualification provides the opportunity to enhance your employability and help you stand out in a highly competitive graduate employment market. You will gain specialist expertise and subject knowledge, as well as developing your transferable skills in areas such as communication, critical thinking, data analysis, problem solving, project management and research— all skills that employers’ value. You will gain an edge over other applicants when applying for jobs and the chance to explore new opportunities, such as moving your career in a different direction or having the confidence to apply for higher level managerial positions.
Relevant to you, relevant to employers
Why choose postgraduate study?
Many of our postgraduate programmes have a strong vocational focus, designed to be easily applied to the relevant sector you are working in. The PgD Human Resource Management, for example, enables you to apply for Corporate Membership of the CIPD as a registered HR practitioner. Research undertaken as part of the PgD or MSc Human Resource Management can be related to the industry in which you are working, providing benefit to both the student and employer.
uos.ac.uk/postgraduate
Broad strategic knowledge It may be that you are planning for your future career. The strategic knowledge gained at postgraduate level across many programmes provides the basis for career progression, but also enables you to be at the forefront of your field. The MBA, one of the most sought-after qualifications in the world, offers sophisticated business knowledge at a senior level of management and significantly advances leadership skills. Undertaking this qualification demonstrates a determination to succeed and will bolster your confidence. The MSc International Business and Management provides the opportunity for those without managerial experience or background in business to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to gain a competitive edge.
Advancement in academia Although many students choose postgraduate study for career advancement or as a method of specialisation, it can also lead to a career in academia or research. Postgraduate study provides the next step towards achieving a doctorate or a professorial title, where you become recognised in your field.
Choosing to continue onto a postgraduate level of study shows a commitment to both your subject and to the process of learning and selfdevelopment. Some postgraduate courses offer you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge through the exploration of a new subject area. Other courses encourage you to build on your previous studies in developing expertise that will provide access to specialist employment opportunities or further study. Whichever type of course you embark on, your studies will equip you to meet both academic and practical challenges, demonstrating your readiness to contribute at a high level within commercial situations and research environments. While you will be expected to develop your knowledge and practical skills, the emphasis in postgraduate studies is on the cultivation and application of higher cognitive skills. For example, you will be required to tackle complex problems for which there is no single solution, producing clear recommendations that are tailored for practical application in the real world. Similarly, you will be expected to enter debates on the latest research topics, demonstrating the ability to understand, communicate and apply theories to resolve complex situations and to inform critical discussions.
provide you with opportunities to develop and receive feedback on these skills, encouraging and enabling you to achieve your full potential. On your course you will work and study alongside your fellow students, forming friendships and relationships that will not only help you in your studies but may also continue well beyond your time here. Socially, you will have the chance to get to know fellow students from a wide range of cultures and nationalities and be exposed to many different personal beliefs and philosophies. We also offer a range of support services to postgraduate students, including dedicated academic skills advisors and librarians who can support you to develop the research skills required to study at this level.

All are taught either full or part-time depending on the programme.
Masters
Part-time study
Many of our postgraduate taught degrees lead to the award of a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Business Administration (MBA). They are usually studied full-time over one year or part-time over two to five years. Applicants will usually hold the equivalent of an Honours degree from a UK university, though other qualifications of similar standing will be considered.
We recognise that there are many reasons for wanting to study part-time, whether it is to fit around your family commitments, boost your career prospects, or allow you to earn while you learn. It can offer a more flexible approach to learning, allowing you to complete your studies over a longer period. Each course information page outlines the course duration and options available.
Postgraduate Diplomas We offer a number of Postgraduate Diplomas. Some consist of the same modules and examinations as a Masters degree, but without the dissertation, and can be used as credits to progress to a Masters qualification. Others are offered as stand-alone qualifications developed for sector-specific professionals and carry accreditation from professional bodies. All are taught either full or part-time depending on the programme.

MSc Applications of Psychology
Student profile
My long-term goal has always been to become a clinical psychologist. After studying BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology at the University of Suffolk, it became clear that I had the qualification but lacked experience. My undergraduate supervisor recommended studying for a Masters as a way to continue my research and gain vital experience via a placement. Studying at postgraduate level has offered me the flexibility to balance work alongside study. As a full-time student I have two days of teaching, which gives me the rest of the week to fulfil my placement and gain clinical experience by volunteering for the charity Mind and working in a mental health hospital. I have to manage my time effectively, but I feel as though I have gained more control over my learning and I’m able to witness first-hand how the theory I learn in the classroom is applied in real-world settings. It is this deeper
level of understanding that has helped me to strengthen the clinical skills needed to achieve my ultimate career goals. During my undergraduate degree, I would have told myself I was crazy to return to study so soon. But after graduating, I felt lost not having a project to work on. I’ve realised that I thrive on challenge and having a deadline to aim for. If you’re up for challenging yourself and you’re pursuing a career that will benefit from a Masters, then don’t hesitate. Get organised and expect assignments you have never done before. If you have the opportunity to do a placement, make the most of it – the practical experience is invaluable and will help with future job opportunities or further study. Studying at postgraduate level has given me the opportunity to learn more, experience more and achieve more.

ANDREW WRIGHT PhD Student
I decided to progress to a PhD at the University of Suffolk following my positive experiences during previous study. I have always liked the community feel of the institution and appreciated the support and encouragement from staff. For me, the decision to return was simple.
Student profile
I am completing my PhD full-time and I’m treating it like a job, with the campus as my ‘place of work’. My relationship with the tutors has changed and I feel more like a colleague than a student. I have enjoyed basing myself in the academic environment and having the opportunity to share ideas, which has helped to steer the planning and preparation of pilot projects I am initiating. We have a dedicated PhD space within the Library Building, providing the ideal study environment to focus in peaceful surroundings and access a wide range of resources. The diversity within the
student body, with students of different ages and backgrounds, makes it a rich learning environment. As a mature student, I have returned to education after almost 30 years. My area of research represents a complete career change from my current employment history. A PhD is a huge undertaking and there is a lot to learn, but I am pursuing a subject that I am passionate about and I am excited about the new opportunities this qualification, and the people I meet along the way, may present.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT (IBM) Globalisation has brought about a massive growth in international trade, business opportunities and the exchange of ideas; therefore, in order to operate successfully, business managers and leaders need to be equipped to not only understand the drivers of global economic change but also be able to manage and lead across cultures, and do so effectively. The MSc International Business and Management (IBM) programme provides students with the opportunity to critically evaluate the inherent complex and challenging nature of managing within an increasingly globalised business environment. A business and managerial environment that is socio-economically, socio-politically and culturally diverse. The IBM programme, through the modules on offer and its learning and teaching strategy, goes beyond the rhetoric of contemporary international relations, and deals with the challenging aspects inherent within international business, that is, for example, dealing with corporate power, mass and rapid logistics, advanced communications and disruptive technologies and how the interaction of these areas, plus other aspects, will shape not only international trade but also societies. Our new MSc International Business and Management programme is ideal for graduates who are keen to develop a deeper understanding of business, management and leadership theory and practice within the framework of global business, and is aimed at individuals who are keen to develop key competencies for a career in multinational organisations, as policy makers or as entrepreneurs. The course is supported by local, experienced managers in relevant vocational sectors and was designed in response to requests from graduates locally, particularly those already established in their vocational practices. The course design has been informed by sector subject areas and reflects the focus for leaders in Education, Health & Social Care sectors who share the experiences of major institutions, influenced by political and economic ideological movements and which provide human services in both a shared and distinct design. Services in these sectors have a universal role as social institutions, impacted by similar political, ideological and economic forces and the programme reflects the skills and attributes of leaders and managers in these sectors.

LIZZIE MAPPLEBECK Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Student profile
The University of Suffolk is geographically close to both work and home, so logistically it has worked well. The course has provided me with additional skills, knowledge and understanding of the business world to enable me to take a more wholesome and systemic approach to work. Fitting in the MBA with full time work was a daunting prospect but having timetables published in advance and clear dates for critical deadlines has helped with planning around my work and family commitments. I have the opportunity to network with lecturers, professors and other MBA students and have learnt so much from my peers, particularly in class discussions and debates. The course is very interactive with the lecturers introducing topics and guiding discussions, providing the platform for sharing learning and experience from the real world.
I really love my job so I didn’t apply for the MBA to give me a ‘spring board’ into a new role, it was the broad curriculum that appealed to me. My main reason to do the MBA was the development of my soft skills and progression towards my bigger goals: leadership, empathy, setting out strategy, direction and organisational culture, as well as the practicalities of business including improving productivity and managing change. The University has made me feel so welcome, it treats its students with respect and is very inclusive. Regular updates and newsletters are circulated so you always know what is going on and what extra support is available should you need it. I have been so impressed with the library and learning services at the University, they bend over backwards to help – this is definitely an added bonus. Oh and the on-site coffee shops are great too!

ACHINTHA PERERA MSc Regenerative Medicine
Student profile
I am currently studying Regenerative Medicine and I decided to embark on this course as I have had an interest in genetic engineering since college. When I first started searching for universities that offer a Masters for Regenerative Medicine, I realised there were not many universities or countries that offered this course. Furthermore, even though one university in my country, Sri Lanka, had advertised they would be starting a similar programme I was not very confident about the quality and standard as they were just starting out, therefore I began looking for my course of interest in other parts of the world. I found the University of Suffolk while I was browsing through a website and I feel so fortunate to have found such a wonderful university. What I truly feel grateful for is meeting such amazing lecturers. Since it took a bit of time to finalise my visa I was unable to arrive on time, however I felt
like I didn’t miss a thing. The lecturers were so kind and helpful, they sent me all the content and papers and even let me attend the classes online until I arrived. I have really enjoyed my time at the University of Suffolk and in this country. Furthermore, I have learnt a great deal from this course and I feel like the lecturers always try to prepare us for the real world and give us the confidence to strive for the best.
