Five reasons to study Science at UOW
1. Learn from world leading researchers
2. Perfectly positioned to get your hands dirty
When you study science at UOW you learn the most current knowledge there is, direct from the people creating that knowledge. Even in your first year, the person standing at the front of the lecture theatre will be one of those ground-breaking researchers: leading researchers who are keen to instil their passion for science into each and every student, right from day one.
We know how important it is to apply theoretical knowledge to real life practical situations. That’s why when you study science at UOW you’ll spend close to half your course hours out in the field or doing practical work in our labs, working with the same equipment as our researchers use.
One of our passionate teachers, and a leading researcher in biopolymers and advanced materials, is Marc in het Panhuis, find out why he is so passionate about teaching on page 9.
Our campus, nestled between the rainforest and the sea, is perfectly positioned so that we can take students out of the classroom and into a wide range of coastal, freshwater, bushland, and geologically diverse environments, right on our doorstep. For UOW alumni Eva Goesch, field work trips were the highlight of her degree. Find out more about Eva on page 7.
3. Help make new discoveries Our scientists are engaged in world-first interdisciplinary research in areas such as medical biotechnology, nanotechnology, climate change, coastal management, anti-cancer drugs and protecting our biodiversity and ecosystems. Research is naturally at the heart of what we do, and as a UOW student you could join a research team by taking part in our Advanced Science Research Assistantships. UOW Student Sandra Spremo did just that, joining researchers working with dementia sufferers, find out how the experience assisted in her Honours research project on page 24.
4. Brand new facilities make learning easy We understand that classrooms need to be equipped with the best in technology, that’s why at UOW we are constantly investing in the latest equipment. In our new Sciences building, students have purpose built computers embedded into laboratory desks where data can be analysed as it’s being collected—just like the labs in UOW’s Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute (IHMRI).
5. Join a community of students determined to make positive change Throughout your degree you’ll join other students to organise and attend educational and professional events, build ties with industry, go on trips around the world, and socialise. UOW’s student clubs—like Bionet for Biologists and Biotechnologists, UOW Groundswell for Geologists and ChemSoc for Chemists— are incubators for new ideas and connections. You’ll meet new friends and new contacts: the people who will change the world. Thomas Griffiths is Treasurer of Chemistry Society (ChemSoc), read about how these connections have inspired him on page 20.

The Bachelor of Science Advanced and Advanced specialist degrees are for high-achieving students who want to take their studies further. The Advanced degrees include an Honours year with automatic entry into Honours without having to apply. In addition to the scientific training, you’ll have access to a number of special benefits and opportunities including: Research Assistantships, where you will work alongside leading researchers on their research grants Vacation scholarships (get paid to work over Summer) Access to internships and research only subjects Work experience, networking, mentoring and professional development activities
HONOURS Honours are available as an additional year of study after completing a Bachelor degree, usually focused on a significant research project. Honours distinguish a graduate as a highachiever and it is recognised as a qualification above and beyond a Bachelor degree. Honours students prove to employers they are independent learners with advanced research skills, vital to most science careers. Completing Honours is also the main path from an undergraduate degree to a PhD. Unless you choose an Advanced degree (automatic Honours entry), you can apply for Honours at the end of your degree—you don’t have to do anything now except think of the possibilities.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Advanced and Honours degrees offer you the chance to undertake a significant research project. This is serious research where you can make a real contribution to scientific knowledge. Science students have worked in teams on research including: D esigning new antibiotics and cancer treatments Development of new materials for chemical and biological sensors U V-radiation and protective pigments in Antarctic moss species Signatures of global environmental change, landscape evolution and the impact of our population on Australia Of course, there’s always new research taking place, with new projects to join—or start. Our research programs are clustered around themes:
Archaeological Dating Atmospheric Chemistry Earth Processes (Geology and Physical Geography) Ecology and Conservation Biology Materials Chemistry Medicinal and Biological Chemistry Medical Biotechnology and Biochemistry
Our academics are experts in these fields, so most new research will occur in these or related areas.
Eva Goesch Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours) (Geosciences & Biological Sciences) Exploration Geologist, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines
Eva is a Graduate Exploration Geologist for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). KCGM is responsible for managing the mining and mineral processing of the ‘Superpit’, which is the largest economic activity within Western Australia’s Goldfields area. The geoscience and biological science majors at UOW allowed Eva to combine her interests in biology and geography. Eva’s favourite part of her UOW degree was the field work. “I got to map habitats up on the escarpment, nocturnal animal spotting and trapping at Jervis Bay, and we went out to Orange, where we visited the Cadia Gold and Copper mine.” These experiences promoted an inclusive and fun atmosphere back in the classroom. “That really made a big difference to my time at uni.”

Marc’s desire to understand how nature and the physical world functions led him into a career in science, and it was this passion that led him to teaching, “Science helps me satisfy my natural curiosity about nature, and what is around us. Knowledge is only useful if you have a way of distributing it. I find that teaching is the best way of distributing it.” “I love watching my students share my passion for knowledge, and it gives me a thrill to take students on a journey of learning. I work closely with my students, and truly believe that this creates a two-way learning process. I always tell my students: ‘don’t be afraid to learn, and don’t ever stop learning. Don’t be afraid to speak to your lecturers because everybody starts at the beginning’. Science is not simply a collection of facts. Rather, it is a path to understanding, and all of your teachers at UOW are excited that you’ve begun following that path.”
