HOW IT WORKS UOW Early Admission is how your high marks in Years 11 and 12 can earn you a place in a UOW degree, before you get your ATAR.

WORK HARD

1. fIND COURSEs

2. APPLY

You’re doing well in school and your marks reflect this. Strong marks in relevant subjects and willingness to work hard means you’re ready to study at UOW.

Find what you want to do and go for it. We have listed all the degrees you can apply to through UOW Early Admission.

Once you know what you want, applying is easy. All you need to get started are your exam marks from Years 11 and 12. You’ll also have the chance to include a School Statement of Support (SSS), which is a teacher’s reference in support of your application.

We’ve also included a list of HSC subjects and marks with each degree. These are not requirements, but show the subjects and results we believe you need to have a good chance of performing well in each degree. You can still apply to UOW Early Admission and be successful even if you don’t get the marks printed here. See Page 4

Early Admission and UOW Living Everyone who receives a successful outcome for their Early Admission will have a guaranteed place in UOW student accommodation for Autumn 2014.

2 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

Applications will open Thursday 1 August and close Thursday 29 August 2013 at 5 pm.

See Page 18

You qualify for a guaranteed place in UOW accommodation if: You receive a Successful Outcome through the 2013 UOW Early Admission program Submit your UOW Living application for 2014 online by close of business Thursday 31 October, 2013 (including payment of the application fee) Visit the UOW Living website to learn about the residences and application process. 3. ASSESSMENT

4. INTERVIEWS

5. Outcomes

First, we’ll look at your academic record so we can be confident of consistently high or improving academic performance, especially in subjects relevant to the UOW degree you’re applying for.

After we’ve looked at all applicants’ academic records, we will conduct a series of interviews from 30 September and 2 October. The interviews are a chance for UOW faculty staff to meet you, discuss your application and determine if Early Admission is right for you.

Outcomes for UOW Early Admission applications will be emailed by 13 October, before you sit the HSC.

We’ll ask for your: Year 11 final exam marks and ranks for all subjects Year 12 half-yearly exam or Trial HSC marks and ranks for all subjects (the most recent available)

See Page 21

If you are successful, you will receive an offer to study at UOW in the UAC early offer round in early December.

Interviewed applicants will need to provide certified copies of their Years 11 and 12 exam results.

See Page 23

See Page 25

PLEASE NOTE The indicative entry marks listed in this guide are for UOW Early Admission only and are not part of the normal application process to UOW. Unsuccessful Early Admission outcomes have no effect on the normal application process through UAC (see page 25).

FIND COURSES UNDERSTANDING THE FOLLOWING TABLES The marks indicated in this guide are not entry requirements for UOW Early Admission—they show the marks we think indicate a student who has a good chance of performing well in a UOW degree. You can still apply to UOW Early Admission and be successful even if you don’t get the marks printed here. All UOW degrees offered through Early Admission are listed here, organised by study areas. Next to each degree is a list of HSC subjects and a score expressed as a percentage. In most cases, the indicative criteria are the Year 12 exam marks you will need to achieve to help demonstrate your ability to do well in that UOW degree. There are a few special notes: Completing: this means you must be currently enrolled in the subject listed. You must still enter an exam mark, but there is no minimum score. Advantage: you don’t have to study this subject to be considered for Early Admission. If you haven’t studied it, you may wish to demonstrate a willingness to study the subject through bridging programs in your Early Admission application.

APPLY

Applications open Thursday 1 August 2013 at 9 am Applications close Thursday 29 August 2013 at 5 pm You make a single application for up to three UOW degrees Each degree is assessed individually and you can receive successful outcomes for all three

HOW TO APPLY You can apply for UOW Early Admission at uow.edu.au/future/early-admission between Thursday 1 August and Thursday 29 August 2013. We cannot accept any late applications under any circumstances—so start early!

Valid contact details We may need to contact you late in 2013 or early 2014. Don’t use a school email address unless you’re sure you will be able to access it after the end of school.

Your Early Admission degree selections You can choose up to three UOW degrees as part of your Early Admission application. Double degrees count as a single choice. You will be assessed for entry to each of these three degrees separately at every stage of the application, so you may receive successful outcomes for all three. See page 25 for more on outcomes. You will need to supply separate sets of certified copies for every interview you are invited to attend. Please note: Place your Early Admission courses in order of preference—this will help us match you with the most appropriate UOW staff for your interview, in case you’re accepted to interview for more than one degree in the same study area.

18 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

THE MARKS IN THIS GUIDE The marks starting on page 6 are only an indication of the typical marks a student needs to be successful in that UOW degree. You can still apply to UOW Early Admission and be successful even if you don’t achieve the marks printed here.

SAVING AN UNFINISHED APPLICATION You can save your application and return to it later. You must add at least one UOW degree choice to your application before it will save. We will send you a confirmation email including your password and login details. You will need these to return to your application. Your login details will be your date of birth and HSC number as you enter them on the first page of the application.

APPLYING TO ADVANCED DEGREES Dean’s Scholar and some Advanced degrees at UOW normally require separate application forms. However, when you apply to an Advanced or Dean’s Scholar degree through UOW Early Admission you don’t have to complete these separate applications, with one exception (the International Bachelor of Science on page 16).

Double Degrees Sometimes double degrees are made up of degrees from two different disciplines. If you can’t find the degree you’re after, check the table for the other discipline.

SCHOOL STATEMENT OF SUPPORT The School Statement of Support (SSS) is a teacher’s reference in support of your application. It can be provided either to acknowledge your passion and suitability for a course, or to acknowledge circumstances that may have negatively affected your marks, including illness and injury. The SSS is an optional component of your UOW Early Admission application—we do not expect that every student applying will have a SSS, and providing one does not guarantee a successful outcome.

CATEGORIES A SSS can only be provided for the following:

Illness or Injury Significant illness or injury affecting your academic performance. This may be short-term injury or illness (affecting a single assessment or preparation period) or long-term condition.

Special Circumstances These circumstances may include, but are not limited to:

Close family member significant illness or death Carer responsibilities Significant financial hardship Interrupted schooling in senior years (including refugee arrival in Australia) Interrupted home life (e.g. parental separation or family relocation)

Demonstrated ongoing commitment to area of study or career path Demonstrations of commitment may include discussions over a period of time (at least 12 months) about the career path or area of study, work experience in related areas, enquiries about and participation in activities related to the career path or university course.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE SSS FORM First, you’ll need a copy of the form. Your Careers Adviser may have one, or you can download it from uow.edu.au/future/early-admission The form needs to be completed by an appropriate academic staff member from your school:

Principal or Deputy Principal Year Adviser Department Head Subject Teacher Student Counsellor

HOW TO SUBMIT Once a teacher has completed and signed a School Statement of Support, you will need to scan and attach it to your UOW Early Admission application. The application will prompt you when you need to upload the SSS.

IF YOUR TEACHERS CAN’T PROVIDE A STATEMENT The SSS is intended to be completed by teachers who have known you for a while and can vouch for your ability to perform at uni, even if something has prevented you from getting the best marks in high school assessments. If you are in special circumstances the school doesn’t know about, your teacher won’t be able to provide this statement. If this is the case, you should apply for Early Admission anyway—you may be successful even without a SSS. You can also call us on 1300 367 869 and we’ll discuss your options, including other alternative admissions programs.

PLEASE NOTE It is your responsibility to request a School Statement of Support from an appropriate staff member at your school. It is your teacher’s decision whether or not to complete a SSS—they do not have to provide one. While all Statements will be considered carefully by UOW assessors, they do not guarantee a successful outcome. You will not be disadvantaged or penalised if your application does not include a School Statement of Support. All submissions to UOW Early Admission including any information provided in a School Statement of Support are subject to UOW’s privacy policy and will be treated in confidence. Our privacy policy can be found at uow.edu.au/about/privacy UOW EARLY ADMISSION

ASSESSMENT Your academic record is the main way we assess your application Selected applicants will be asked to attend an interview If invited to an interview, attendance is compulsory

YOUR ACADEMIC RECORD We will look at your academic record to look for evidence of consistent or improving academic performance—particularly in subjects relevant to the UOW degrees you have applied to. We will ask to see: Year 11 final exam marks and ranks for all subjects Year 12 half-yearly exam or Trial HSC marks and ranks for all subjects (use whichever is most recent). We will accept either raw or scaled marks. Your school will be able to advise what type of exam marks have been given to students at your school. There is also an optional CV section within the application where you can also provide up to five points you think are relevant to your application, such as extracurricular and volunteer activities, work history or additional qualifications.

INTERVIEWS Selected applicants will be asked to attend an interview If invited to an interview, attendance is compulsory for a successful outcome

After we have looked at applicants’ academic records, we will conduct a series of interviews from 30 September and 2 October. The interviews are a chance for UOW faculty staff to meet you, discuss your application and determine if Early Admission is right for you.

INTERVIEW TIPS The interview is your chance to show us you have the qualities needed to be a successful UOW student.

UOW staff will decide to invite applicants on a case-by-case basis. If you are invited to interview, you must attend to be eligible for a successful outcome.

Dress for the occasion. You should treat UOW Early Admission interviews like a job interview. You don’t have to wear a suit or formal business attire, but smart, neat clothing is strongly recommended.

BOOKING YOUR INTERVIEW

Read your instructions carefully, and supply all the information requested as part of your application. If you are in doubt, email us on early-admission@uow.edu.au

Invitations to interviews will be emailed between Monday 9 and Friday 13 September 2013.

Prepare and be punctual. This includes knowing what you need to bring to interview, and having it ready ahead of time.

If you are invited to an interview, you may be directed to log back into your application to make a booking. You can do this using the login details provided in your original Early Admission confirmation email. For this reason please hold onto this email even after online applications close.

Be interested. An Early Admission interview is an excellent chance to talk with the people you’ll be learning from. Asking intelligent questions about what UOW can offer you is a good way to show your enthusiasm. Stay focussed on why you’re passionate about studying at uni. Give your questions some thought and try and make every answer demonstrate to the UOW staff why you would make a great UOW student. Some of the qualities they may look for are:

Passion for a subject Discipline and organisation Commitment and perseverance Curiosity, and a willingness to listen and learn Leadership and teamwork skills

OUTCOMES Outcomes will be sent 9–13 October You will be assessed for all your nominated degrees separately and will receive an outcome for each Unsuccessful outcomes have no effect on the normal application process through UAC in January

WHEN YOU WILL FIND OUT Outcomes for your Early Admission application will be sent by email from 9–13 October. Everyone will receive their outcomes in this period. Outcomes will sent to the email address given in your online application and will be released all through the day and night. The order they are sent depends on many factors, not all applicants to the same degree will find out at the same time. If you don’t receive your outcome straight away, don’t worry— even if your friends hear back before you do—we will contact you with your Early Admission outcome by the end of Sunday 13 October.

TYPES OF OUTCOME There are three possible outcomes to your application for Early Admission. You will be assessed individually for each degree you apply to, so an unsuccessful result for one degree won’t rule you out for other degrees—and you may even receive three successful outcomes.

Successful You have been reserved a place in your UOW degree of choice. You still need to apply to UOW through UAC—we will send you more information on this process when you receive your Early Admission outcome. To receive a formal offer to study in the December UAC early offer round, the course you received a successful Early Admission offer to must be your first preference for this round.

Unsuccessful You have not secured a place in a UOW degree through Early Admission. However, you can still apply through UAC as normal and receive an offer to study at UOW in the January UAC main offer round. Your unsuccessful Early Admission application will not affect this process.

THE ATAR IS IMPORTANT Your ATAR is important. For UOW Early Admission we’re not looking for a particular rank—we’re looking for consistent or improving performance. You also need to be eligible for an ATAR to qualify for Early Admission. Please remember that there are no guarantees in UOW Early Admission. You should work as hard as you can in your HSC exams to make sure you have as many options as possible for the future.

WHAT TO DO next Early Admission and UAC early round All formal offers to study from UOW Early Admission will be made by UAC in the early offer round on 5 December. To convert a successful outcome into a formal UOW offer the degree in question must be your first preference when preferences for this round close on 3 December 2013.

UOW EARLY ADMISSION AND YOUR UAC PREFERENCES SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES If you receive a successful UOW Early Admission outcome, we are prepared to make you an offer before ATARs are released, based on your demonstrated ability to succeed in the nominated course. You must apply to study this degree in the December UAC early offer round. To receive a formal offer to study this degree your UOW Early Admission course must be your first preference in this round.

Ineligible

UNSUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES

This may mean:

If you receive an unsuccessful outcome though UOW Early Admission you will not be disadvantaged, nor will it affect the normal UAC assessment process in any way. You can still apply to UOW through UAC and be assessed as normal, through the main round in January 2014.

Your application is incomplete and we are unable to progress your application. You were invited to - but did not attend an Early Admission interview. You have not provided certified copies of your academic results as requested.
