The Thomas Jefferson 9U Baseball team took a trip to Walmart to help provide 5 local families with Christmas gifts this holiday season. The team was working through the school district to help 5 local families in need. It was a great learning experience for the kids to understand that some families are less fortunate, and they wanted to pitch in and help. “I feel good knowing that the kids will have a nice Christmas now that we helped them,” said Ryder Mulvihill. Brothers Nick and Josh Palmer added “It made us happy to help another person.”

Monessen VFW Post 1190 and American Legion Post 28 each made donations recently of $500 to the Monessen VFD #1. The funds were used to install a radio system into a fire truck that the department recently purchased from Rennerdale, PA. Fire company. The vehicle is a 1997 Pierce Quantam 105’ Aerial and was produced by Pierce Manufacturing. Pierce has built fire trucks since 1940, and is the highest volume producer of fire vehicles in the United States today. It will replace Engine #3, a 1989 Pumper and Truck #3, a 1976 Aerial. The new piece of equipment needs several upgrades and the Fire Department is still accepting donations from individuals, businesses and other organizations to bring it up to full operational status.

Donora Council Announces 2019 Budget and Grants Received By Jill Runfola On Dec. 13, 2018, Donora Council reviewed the Borough’s Proposed 2019 Budget. Finance Chairperson Edward Parquette read the proposed plans to be approved at a special end of the month meeting. Council made progress on this year’s budget and there will be no tax increase. The budget will be on display in the Borough Office and Donora Public Library. Guest speaker, PA. State Rep. Bud Cook reported the good news on two major grants for the borough. Donora was awarded a $50,000 grant in association with the Monongahela Valley Corridor Trail Study. In addition, with the $50,000 DCED contract awarded last year, this will allow the Borough to complete the $100,000 feasibility study of connecting all the proposed little towns with biking and walking trails. Cook thanked council on a job well done to receive grants. “Donora took the lead in these 2 grants,” said Cook. “I’m very proud of Donora…The park needed a bike trail, and we need to reach out and get the community involved… . We’re excited and look forward to future grants.” The two major sites to benefit from the funds are Palmer Park in Donora and the city of Cokeburg. In the Donora Mayor James McDouugh’s report, he concluded by commending the street department in taking down a building recently and added his resolve on continuing to fight blight in the city. Then he wished everyone Happy Holidays and mentioned work that the Borough Building is having done, too.

Donora Council welcomed Rep. Bud Cook for an overview on the planned expenditures of the city’s grant money.

GASTROENTEROLOGY Q: Why getting a colonoscopy could be the best way to find the answer and save your life in the process.

A: What is one of the greatest success stories in modern medicine, the death rate from colorectal cancer has decreased significantly in the last 30 years. There has been a 2% decline in the rate of colon cancer among Americans every year for the last 15 years. Colorectal cancer (CRC) develops in the colon or rectum and is the second leading cause of cancer By Dr Nicholas Bellicini deaths in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Pittsburgh Society, approximately 140,000 new cases of CRC were Gastroenterology diagnosed last year and more than 50,000 died from Associates the disease. According to recent studies, both the incidence and mortality of CRC are declining due to improved screening efforts and early detection. However, numerous studies have shown that even greater reduction in CRC could be achieved if more people receive screening colonoscopies. Nearly all colon and rectal cancers start out as small polyps that can become larger and progress to dysplasia and cancer. Several different types of polyps can form in the colon, but the most common and important are adenomas. These are the polyps that most often transform into cancer. The goal of CRC screening exams is to detect and remove adenomas before they progress. Numerous tests are available for CRC screening, but the gold standard is the colonoscopy. For the procedure, the patient is comfortably and safely sedated, and a thin, flexible rubber scope with a tiny camera is inserted into the rectum and advanced gently around the colon. Colonoscopy detects most small polyps and almost all large polyps and cancers, which are then removed and analyzed. The typical exam lasts only 15-20 minutes. In 2018, the American Cancer Society changed the recommendation for both men and women at average screening risks to begin screening at age 45 instead of 50. If no polyps are found, the exam should be repeated every 10 years. Repeat exams may be considered sooner with people with increased risk factors, such as family history of colon cancer, African Americans, smokers, obesity, or people with inflammatory bowel disease. Age should not be a cut off per multiple societal recommendations. People who are in good health and with a life expectancy of more than 10 years should continue regular colorectal screening through the age of 75. Dr Nicholas Bellicini is a board certified Gastroenterologist in private practice serving patients in the Mon Valley, South Hills and city of Pittsburgh, including Spartan Surgical Center, South Hills Endoscopy Center, St Clair Hospital and UPMC Mercy.

MVH Receives the 2019 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The award signifies that MVH is in the top 10 percent of 4,797 U.S. hospitals offering orthopedic services. There are clear gender differences in musculoskeletal disease, according to a study reported in The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Structural anatomy differences, hormones, and genetics are factors in optimizing care for male vs. female orthopedic patients. Because women have higher rates of arthritis than men, "some 60 percent of joint replacement surgeries are performed on women. In a national survey conducted by the Women’s Choice Award, female orthopedic patients identified the following key priorities when choosing a hospital for orthopedics: • Single source for orthopedic services • Solid patient safety record • High recommendation ratings “Women have different orthopedic needs, particularly as they grow older and become more at risk for osteoporosis and fractures,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “They also have different healthcare preferences, which we use to evaluate the recipients of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics. We are the only award that recognizes a hospital’s ability to meet women’s distinctive needs.” The methodology used to select MVH as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics is unique in that it evaluates Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results

along with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. Award recipients are also measured on their incidence of surgical complications and infections, including: • A wound that splits open after surgery • Accidental cuts and tears • Deaths from serious treatable complications • Rate of complications for knee or hip replacement patients • Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) •Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureu (MRSA) infections A hospital must have arthroscopy, joint replacement and spine surgery orthopedic services available to patients, onsite physical therapy and MRI in order to qualify for the award. It is the only award recognizing excellence in orthopedics based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence. MVH is one of 484 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for orthopedic care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award. “This designation is just one more example of how Monongahela Valley Hospital continues to provide the highest quality of care for the residents of the mid-Monongahela Valley. Receiving this award and The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal® of Approval for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement places the hospital as a top choice for orthopedic care,” said Louis J. Panza, president and CEO of MVH. For more information on the America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics, please visit/www.womenschoiceaward.com/awarded/healthcare/.

Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce ‘Business of the Month’ ZIMMER PRINTING Zimmer Printing is the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce ‘Business of the Month.’ Located in the downtown business community of Monongahela, Zimmer Printing has been operating for nearly 122 years. It is the ultimate familyowned business - currently on its third family. As its name suggests, the business was started by the Zimmer family in 1897. John Zimmer and his brother operated it. Tobias Provan, began working around the printing business as early as age 10, sweeping the floors. By the time he became a teenager, Tobias was given more responsibilities in the printing business. And when his father became ill, he took a more active role in the company. "When dad was on dialysis, I would open up the place until he came in the afternoon," Provan said. "When he passed away, I started managing the business." Tobias’s mother, Carol Provan, owns the business and does the bookkeeping. A brother, Nathanael, runs one of the presses. But Tobias manages the day-to-day operations. Zimmer Printing does business and commercial printing. They specialize in custom-made items such as business cards and forms, letterheads as well as event and tickets, including perforation. They also handle items such as information contact cards, business discount cards, raffle tickets, prescription pads, post cards for nonprofit organizations and ‘while-you-were-out’ notepads. They also offer laminating and fax services. Zimmer Printing is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays. They can be reached by telephone at (724) 258-7775.

BPOE Awards Two New Eagle Scouts Jason Yanyo and Peter Kutschke each achieved the rank of Eagle Scout recently, and received recognition and certificates of merit from the Elks at Troop 510's regular weekly meeting on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Eugene Eckman, Leading Knight, from Elks Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park gave a short motivational talk to the troop and presented each of the new Eagles with two framed awards, one from the local lodge and one from the Grand Lodge in Chicago, Illinois. He also read a personal letter from the Grand Exalted Ruler to each of the new Eagles. The final two items he presented was a personal size silk American Flag and a small gold lapel pin representing 80+ years of relationship between the two organizations. The final and most challenging hurdle toward achievement of this highest rank in scouting is a community service project in which the potential Eagle is responsible for all aspects of the undertaking to include planning, funding, labor management, implementation and presenting the final written detailed report to the judging committee. Jason Yanyo completed an Eagle Project that benefited the Elementary Center of South Park. He and his work crew of volunteers refurbished a butterfly garden at the center. They removed old plants and mulch, put down new landscaping fabric and mulch, added new butterfly plants, re-topped benches and put up information signs. Peter Kutschke’s Eagle Project benefited the St. Anne's School in Castle Shannon. He and his work crew of volunteers built an outside library for the playground area, as well as a new school sign for the parking lot. Peter also went to local libraries for book donations for the new outdoor library.

Christopher Solomon of Boy Scout Troop 510 was recognized for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in a Court of Honor ceremony on Sunday, December 16, held in the Home Economics Building in South Park. Chris's ‘Eagle Project’ benefited the South Park High School's student drivers and those locals seeking to hone their parallel parking skills. He created a practice parking area on the South Park High School grounds. His efforts entailed researching the requirements and dimensions for the project, raising the necessary funding thru donations and solicitations, leading the voluntary work crew in clearing the corner on the back parking lot on the school campus, re-paving the necessary space, painting the line boundaries and newly installed curbs, and adding signage. Chris received many letters of recognition from national, state, and local dignitaries and leaders. Attending and speaking at the ceremony were Matthew Koran, Eagle Scout and godfather to the new Eagle. His talk focused on the topic "The World Needs Eagle Scouts"., and Eugene Eckman, Leading Knight of BPOE Lodge 2213 located in Bethel Park. Mr. Eckman gave a short motivational speech and presented the new Eagle with two framed certificates of merit awards, one from the local lodge and one from the Elks national Lodge in Chicago, Ill. He also presented Chris with a personal size, silk American flag, and a small gold lapel pin which represents the 80+ years of relations between the two organizations.

Get the Best Mortgage Financing Deal (Continued from page 36)

• Learn about rates. Become informed of the rate trends in your area. Lower rates translate into significant savings amounts per month and over the life of the loan. Rate may be fixed, though some are adjustable-rate mortgages (also called a variable or floating rate). Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and a financial consultant can discuss what might be in your best interest. • Discuss points with your financial advisor and lender. Some lenders allow you to pay points in advance, which will lower the interest rate. Get points quoted in dollar amounts so they’ll be easier to compare. If you’re unfamiliar with points, discuss the concept with your financial advisor. The vast majority of homeowners secured a mortgage to purchase their homes. Learning about the mortgage process can help new buyers navigate these sometimes tricky financial waters.

School News...School News Pleasant Hill Middle School Students Bake Holiday Cookies for Meals on Wheels

The holidays just got a lot sweeter for area Meals on Wheels recipients! Pleasant Hills Middle School Family Consumer Science Teacher Mrs. McCauley and a few of her students donated their time and talents to baking cookies for LifeSpan’s “Sweet Holiday Wishes” Cookie Campaign. Mrs. McCauley’s students baked 12 dozen chocolate chip cookies and enlisted additional students and staff to bake cookies to help brighten the holidays for senior community members. Representatives from LifeSpan visited the middle school on December 13, 2018 to pick up the cookie donations and present the students with a special certificate of appreciation. LifeSpan, which provides much-needed resources and services for seniors, will distribute a half dozen cookies to each senior with their Meals on Wheels delivery. Heartfelt thanks go to Mrs. McCauley and all of the middle school bakers for providing over 22 dozen cookies to Meals on Wheels recipients!

Thomas Jefferson High School's ‘Hour of Code 2.0’ Provides Double the Fun and Learning Nearly 200 high school students took part in Thomas Jefferson High School’s ‘Hour of Code 2.0’ on December 6, 2018. The event entitled “Do you want to CODE a Snowman?” was organized by science teacher Wendy Matta and a large committee of faculty and staff members to encourage more students to take computer programming classes. The event was held in support of the global Hour of Code movement (www.hourofcode.com) which encourages educators to organize an Hour of Code event during December 3-9, 2018. This year, students had the opportunity to learn how to code in JavaScript with the help of a Khan Academy Tutorial and participate in additional computer science learning sessions led by TJHS Alumni. By the end of the event, students spent at least one hour learning about JavaScript programming to code a snowman. Computer science and STEM club students donned specially-designed snowman shirts and were on hand to help participants with coding and escort them to alumni learning sessions. Five different alumni presentations were provided for students which included Chris Ganas who works in cybersecurity for PaloAlto Networks, John Ha who provides website and application development for Computer Enterprises, Inc., Ritwik Gupta who works at CMU Software engineering institute in AI and Machine Learning, Barry Skirble who is the Director of Point of Care Software Development at Bayer Pharmaceuticals/ Radiology, and Srikanth Mruthik who is the Head of Software Development for Bayer Contrast Injectors also of Bayer Pharmaceuticals/Radiology. Tables in the high school cafeteria were transformed into giant letters spelling HOC with cupcakes, java supplied by Coffee Tree Roasters, snow-themed music, and a snowman for photo ops courtesy of TJHS Math Teacher Greg Erdely. The event also featured a Pixel Prize Wall with special prizes awarded every fifteen minutes as the students honed their JavaScript programming skills. The new Life Skills class cut all the squares for the Pixel Prize Wall, helped bake cupcakes for the event, and served refreshments to attendees. Everyone pitched in to make Hour of Code 2.0 twice the fun as the first one!

OBITUARY - Leo Bandini Leo Bandini, 97, formerly of Donora, PA, passed away December 3, 2018. He passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by family. Leo Bandini was born in Gallatin, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth (Fretina) Bandini. He graduated from Elizabeth High School in Pennsylvania and served honorably in the United States Army, 1942-1945, during World War II. Leo was stationed at Trinidad and Dutch Guiana where his unit guarded aluminum ore mines used to make bombers and fighter planes. After becoming First Sergeant, he was transferred to Camp Joseph T Robinson in Arkansas where he conducted and supervised artillery training for new Leo Bandini recruits. Leo married his cherished love, Anna, in 1946 and they lived a beautiful life together for over 71 years. Leo and Anna lived in Elizabeth and Clairton, Pennsylvania before moving to California where they lived in Richmond and Pinole. They raised their 3 children with caring, traditional family values and unwavering dedication. During Leo’s career, he was an auto mechanic, an auto body shop manager and a machinist. He earned teaching credentials in 1964 and he worked evenings, for many years, as an Auto Mechanics instructor at Peralta College in Berkeley, California. In 1994, he and Anna retired to Sun City West, Arizona. In retirement, Leo drew pleasure from gardening, golf, fitness (even riding his bicycle well into his 90’s!) and in being a loving grandfather. Leo always remained devoted to Anna and became her sole caregiver during the last few years of her life. Leo is predeceased by his wife Anna (Firczak). He is survived by his children: Leo Bandini (wife Julie) of Burbank, CA, Beverly Ricci (husband Richard) of Palm Desert, CA and Diane Lukza (husband Michael) of Rocklin, CA. His loss is deeply mourned by his loving grandchildren Michael Bandini, John Coppa and Joseph Coppa and his 7 great grandchildren. Leo is also precedeased by 4 brothers, William (Bill), Alfred (Al), Angelo (Buddy) and Charles. A private service, with full military honors, will be held at the National Cemetery in Riverside, California on January 4, 2019.
