‘Good Guys’ Luncheon Held in McMurray
Essential Programs and Services Will Continue Amid growing concerns about COVID-19, the health and safety of our community and staff remains SHIM's highest priority. We will continue to serve our neighbors and protect the most vulnerable among us. We realize that there are people who will be struggling for food, personal care items and other vital services. Therefore, essential programs such as our three food pantries and utility and financial assistance will continue in a modified capacity. SHIM Center will be closed to the public until further notice and the SHIM Family Center will be closed until April 14. For detailed information about our modified programs, please visit the website: www.shimcares.org/covid-19-resources. SHIM's staff will be working remotely and answering calls and emails in a timely manner. If you have any questions, please call our main office at 412854-9120 and select the extension for the appropriate staff person. Anyone in need of immediate assistance can contact United Way’s PA 21-1 Southwest by dialing 2-1-1, texting your zip code to 898-211, or visiting PA211sw.org.

Mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers that drive. Drivers and runners are needed Mondays through Fridays. Please call the Donora Senior Center at 724-379-6446 or contact us at donorasr@sphs.org.

Recent Study Confirms Washington County Tourism Continues to Drive Local Economy Washington County Pennsylvania, which is home to some of the country’s finest historical, entertainment and cultural attractions, continues to be a leader in the southwestern Pennsylvania region in tourism and economic growth according to a recent report. The Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development’s report entitled2018 Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism in Pennsylvania firmly placed Washington County, PA second in the Greater Pittsburgh Region in significant tourism impact categories such as Traveler Spending, Travel Industry Employment and Overall Travel Industry Impacts. The county also saw increases in individual tourism categories such as Lodging, Food & Beverage, Shopping and Recreation. According to the report, direct traveler spending in Washington County in 2018 was approximately $737.3 million-up from $703.7 million in 2017. This represented a nearly five percent increase in traveler spending over the prior year. The report also stated that Washington County’s tourism industry employed6,000 people in
2018 generating $204.1 million in labor income which are also increases over the prior year. These impressive statistics allow Washington County to rank as the second highest (after Allegheny County) in traveler spending, tourism employment and overall travel impacts among counties in the eight county Greater Pittsburgh Region. These travel industry impacts also generated nearly $44.4 million in state and local tax revenue. And of course, this overall tourism activity continues to drive business and promote Washington County’s high quality of life. Across the region travelers spent nearly $8.5 billion in 2018 – a new record high and a 3.9 percent increase from2017. The region once again had the third highest level of traveler spending among the state’s 11tourism regions. The complete study can be found at https://www.visitpa.com/economicimpact-travel-report. According to Diana Irey Vaughan, Chairman of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, the study confirms that tourism is a major economic driver in the county. “The strength of Washington
County’s economy is in its diversity and our emphasis on developing our tourism industry contributes to our overall economic success. This study demonstrates that the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency (WCTPA), county government, private sector and our tourism partners are achieving positive impacts in growing our tourism economy and the jobs that support it,” Irey Vaughan stated. Larry Maggi, Vice Chairman of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, stressed the importance of tourism messaging for the county. “Tourism is a business and as we continually refine our tourism messaging and promotion as well as identify our customers, we find that more and more travelers are interested in history, food, gaming, recreation, shopping and other unique experiences. Our success in promoting interest in these areas is evident in this study and we are looking forward to further economic expansion of the industry,” Maggi commented. Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman noted the importance of sustained investment in marketing and capital in the
county’s efforts to attract visitors. “The county commissioners and WCTPA are providing resources to increase our marketing and advertising as well as investing in capital improvements for our tourism assets. In fact, the WCTPA has increased its tourism grant program from an annual process to now three times a year. These resources are improving our tourism efforts and assets as well as increasing the positive economic impacts of the industry,” stated Sherman. Jeff M. Kotula, President of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Promotion Agency, highlighted the strength of tourism’s partners in driving the county’s tourism success. “While these economic impacts are impressive, the success of our tourism industry is not driven by one organization, attraction, social media site or even billboard. It is the result of countless partnerships comprised of our tourism assets, county commissioners, hoteliers, businesses, non-profit groups and dedicated volunteers-all working together to create a thriving tourism and travel economy in Washington County,” Kotula commented.

Local Worship Gospel Alliance Church in Rostraver Offers Drive Thru Prayer
Social distancing is observed, while Gospel Alliance staff and volunteers pray for church and community members.
At Gospel Alliance Church (GAC) current and varied ministries are active and well attended, even now. Along with most businesses and organizations, GAC is pragmatic in finding ways to continue to gather together amid current crisis. Rev. Robert (Bob) Riconda, stated “Preaching by itself will not disciple most people; instead they need the information plus a life on life relationship. . .[the] process is not a program or a class but a relational journey. . . a journey that is shown by positive movement, not perfection.” Ministry and relationships will not stop, the church remains in motion. Drive-thru prayer times have started at the church, located right along Route 51 south and Fells Church Road, in Belle Vernon. Community and church members are able to pull
right in and drive around to a prayer station. “As the Coronavirus pandemic evolves daily many are feeling lonely, disconnected or overwhelmed,” said Pastor Bob. “We are offering a safe place to drive thru and be prayed for. Let’s care for each other during these uncertain times.” Drive-thru prayer dates and times are as follows: • Sundays 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. • Wednesdays 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. • Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Nothing will be handed out and social distancing will be observed. In addition, youth, adult groups, and families are meeting via video calls. Pastor Bob has already posted multiple videos and will continue to do so. The church also sends out weekly and daily updates via email

Today, Gospel Alliance Church is an energetic, multi-generational congregation of 400; an established mainstay in Rostraver, PA with community ties. Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet 2020 Postponed to 2021 Those individuals scheduled to be inducted into the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame as the Class of 2020 will now comprise the Class of 2021 and will be inducted at St. Spyridon Hellenic Center on Friday, June 18, 2021. The banquet for this year was not feasible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the first year since 1995 that a class will not be inducted into the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame. The Class of 2021 will be comprised of coaches Billy Connors, Major Corley, Jim Dumm, and Bob Rosborough Jr. along with Jon Green, and Ben McCauley. The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame is one of 30 chapters of The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame made up of four geographical regions. The Western chapters of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame including Erie Metro, Fayette County, Robert "Tick" Cloherty-Western, and Washington-Greene have moved their banquet induction to the following year, as has the Mid Mon Valley chapter. Because of the challenges with COVID-19 virus chairman Dennis Stitch announced “it was necessary to cancel this year’s banquet. In conversation with the inductees, while disappointed, they were all very supportive and understanding of the decision. To our supporters, MMVASHOF is thankful for your commitment, dedication, and unwavering support over the years. You are the pillars that help keep our organization strong and vibrant in the Mon Valley. We truly appreciate all you do. As we go through these uncharted waters, we not only will stay together, we will thrive together!” The Sports Hall of Fame web site is: http://www.monvalleysportshalloffame.com

Local People News Independent Author and South Park Resident, Jim Caldwell, Launches Latest Novel Were you, or someone you know, a newspaper carrier in your neighborhood as a kid? That is the question, South Park resident, Jim Caldwell, asks his readers to help introduce his latest novel, Marty’s Writings Journal on Amazon. In 1954 there were three major newspapers printed daily in Pittsburgh; all with vast subscriptions. Hundreds of adolescent boys and girls delivered them throughout the day. Marty Rinehart had just turned twelve when Mark, a neighbor and his older sister’s unofficial boyfriend, handed down his South Park Resident, evening route to him. Jim Caldwell has Released It was also the year that a well-liked his latest novel, teacher in his seventh grade inspired her Marty’s Writings Journal. class to write. Marty asked his mom to buy him a large blue notebook and began, many nights after bedtime under the covers with a flashlight, to journal his first year as a carrier. Life was simpler then: balloons tied on the back wheel of his new bicycle to make it sound like a motorcycle; a richly salted tomato sandwich after a long summer’s day of swimming at the community pool; and a group of friends to shoot baskets with at the hoop hanging on the telephone pole across the street, or play board games on someone’s porch. Jump on your own bicycle and ride along with Marty on this unsophisticated, sometimes funny, sometimes scary and conflicted, emerging and emotional awakening into maturity. It may provoke your own memories back whenever. Anyone who has walked a paper route, (rain or shine), as a teenage boy or girl, will enjoy this fun-loving tale about Marty, based on a few real-life experiences of the author’s delivering the Post-Gazette in the 1950’s. To purchase or simply to view Jim’s video detailing the fun in writing this one, visit the new, redesigned web site at: http://www.jrcaldwellnovels.com.

Cleaning Up the Garage (NewsUSA) - Here are some tips for getting your machinery, vehicles and outdoor equipment ready for summer use and entertaining: • Get your lawnmower out of the corner of the garage. Wipe down all surfaces with a dry cloth, oil moving parts to ensure they are well lubricated, and make sure the blade is sharp. If you added a fuel stabilizer like STABIL Storage prior to putting it away for the winter, it should start up smoothly. Should you have some hard starts, try a revitalizer like Start Your Engines! to get it revved up quickly. • Prime your automobile. According to the AAA, driving costs are affected by how well your vehicle runs, and that includes the inside and outside of your car. Performing regular maintenance can ensure more efficient operation and help prevent costly repairs. One way to save money is by detailing the car yourself using (Continued on following page)

READER ADVISORY: Reader Advisory: the National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the following classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
