Mid-Mon Valley Model Railroad Club is Open to The Public Again This Holiday Season Get into the holiday spirit by visiting the Mid-Mon Valley Model Railroad Club, which will be open to the public again this Holiday season. The club is working to depict the major industries in the Mid-Mon Valley as they interacted with the railroads. Visitors can walk through three rooms of scenery as the trains run on a double-decked layout and use the helix (spiral) in a fourth room to travel from the lower level to the upper level and back again. Along the way, one can see a blast furnace, a rolling mill, a strip-mine, coke ovens, a railroad yard and a trolley line. There have been several other improvements made to the layout this year. More scenery has been completed and several structures have been added. Historical artifacts from area railroads are on display in the last room and photographs line the hallway toward the roomful of artifacts. Items to be seen include trainmen's lanterns, switch locks, tickets, timetables, caps, signal lights and many other fascinating objects. The club will be open on weekends from November 27, 2021 through January 9, 2022. (There is an exception: the club will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.) Visitors will be received each Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. The club is located on the second floor of 159 Main Street in New Eagle (above the New Eagle Borough Municipal Building). The wearing of masks is recommended per CDC recommendations. The Mid-Mon Valley Model Railroad Club was established in 1986 by a group of people interested in railroading and in model railroads. Its goal is to build a layout depicting a sense of the history of Monongahela valley and life in the heyday of the railroads in the area. The club has displayed its modular layout (the traveling units, not the permanent layout in New Eagle) at the August Fun Fest at Cedar Creek Park. The club’s funds

Enjoy an old-fashioned holiday tradition by visiting the miniature railroad display in New Eagle.

come from modest dues and a couple of fundraisers during the year. Most of the trains running on the layout belong to the individual members of the club. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in model railroading, regardless of skill level. Junior members, age 10 – 18, are welcome with an adult sponsor. Members are all members of the National Model Railroad Association. Membership has remained fairly steady at about 12 – 15 members through the years. Meetings, work sessions, and eventually, operating sessions are held Friday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Individuals interested in membership should talk with one of the members during a visit. More information is available on the website: www.mmvmrrc.org Although there is no admission fee, visitors are encouraged to donate to the layout fund in the caboose-shaped box located near the entrance. Suggested donation levels are at least $1.00 per person. Coloring pages and publications about the hobby are available free of charge to children of all ages. Seeing model trains at the Holidays is a wonderful tradition. Make New Eagle a stop on your Holiday tour. For further information, call S. Werner at 724-379-8584.

CCAC Offers Free CDL Training for Current and Former Members of The U.S. Armed Forces The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that will provide commercial driver’s license (CDL) training at no cost to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including National Guard members and Reservists, as well as certain military family members. The $132,409 grant for the Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training program will cover the cost of training 31 individuals. CCAC is one of only four institutions in the state, and the only one in Western Pennsylvania, that received an award. The grant covers the full tuition cost of the program, which can be completed in eight weeks. The program is open to individuals residing in the greater Allegheny County region. There is a huge and growing demand for CDL drivers across the country. According to CCAC CDL Coordinator Darius Markham, the current shortage of 75,000 drivers is expected to double in the next 10 years. Locally, the average new driver can expect to make around $45,000 in the first year; however, some companies advertising for drivers are offering salaries of $70,000 to $80,000 a year plus full benefits—including family health insurance coverage and 401(k) plans—from the first day on the job, he said. Markham noted that individuals with military training “tend to do very well in this industry, and they make ideal drivers.” Through their experience, veterans are used to working sometimes long and irregular hours in a non-office environment. Many owners and managers of trucking companies are also veterans, and they do what they can to support the troops, Markham said. John Norman, a mechanical engineer, was looking for a career

change. He had previously only driven a truck for a brief time in New York City in the 1980s. When a friend who drove a tractor-trailer told him that he was making good money and loved his job, he decided to make the switch. After completing the CCAC program and receiving his CDL, Norman received many offers for driving positions, including driving for USPS, UPS and long-haul trucking companies. He accepted a position driving full time for Turner’s Dairy, and he couldn’t be happier. He is making as much as he did in his former occupation, plus great benefits. “Turner’s is a great company to work for, and they treat you like family. The work is hard, but it’s rewarding, and you’re your own boss,” said Norman, who credits the CCAC program, along with his strong work ethic, for his new career. “The instructors were excellent. They really did a good job teaching us.” CCAC’s CDL program is located at Boyce Campus in Monroeville and at the Washington County Center, with classes meeting four hours a day, Monday to Friday. Classes start every four weeks, and no prior truck driving experience is required. Markham holds an information session every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Boyce Campus where he talks about the industry and explains the program for interested individuals. There is no cost or obligation to attend. To register, contact Darius Markham at 724.325.6834 or dmarkham@ccac.edu. To complete an inquiry/preregistration form, click here. CCAC also offers a third-party test site that is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at CCAC’s Washington County Center at the Washington Crown Center mall in North Franklin Township. To make an appointment, call 724.223.1017.

West Jefferson Hills Knights Of Columbus Council and VFW Team Up To Help Local Homeless Veterans By Michael P. Mauer, VFW District 29 PAO Members of Knights of Columbus West Jefferson Hills Council 11887 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid of West Mifflin have worked together this holiday season to provide local homeless veterans with necessities needed to make their lives more comfortable. The two organizations raised more than $2,000 to assemble and distribute duffel bags packed with warm clothes and other comfort items. “We’re really glad to be partnering with other benevolent groups that are eager to help our fellow veterans,” said Gene Staudt, VFW Post 914 chaplain. “Too often, the least fortunate are overlooked during these cold winter months. We’re hoping to provide some of the things needed that’ll help make their lives better.”

According to Staudt, each duffel bag costs about $400 to $500 to assemble, and contains items like warm clothes, a tarp, a parka, long johns, boots, hygiene articles and a flashlight. The bags are assembled for both male and female veterans, and are equipped with a lock and key. Staudt said Ralph Graeser, Council 11887 K. of C. financial secretary, and Earl Frentzel, Council 11887 K. of C. grand knight, were both instrumental in helping get the project started locally. “This was something we heard other knights were doing in other parts of the country, and we wanted to bring it here,” said Staudt. “The response we’ve received from members of Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish and the VFW has been wonderful.” Donations for the project were made by VFW District 29, VFW

Members of Knights of Columbus West Jefferson Hills Council 11887 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid of West Mifflin show one of the duffel bags they’ve gathered to be given to homeless veterans over this holiday season. Post 914, K. of C. Council 11887, Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, Jefferson Hills, as well as private individuals. The duffel bags will be distributed by the Veterans Leadership Program of Western PA. The duffel bags will help area veterans facing the cold weather on the streets this winter. According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are approximately 760,000 veterans in Pennsylvania. Of this number, nearly 1,000 are classified as homeless. About 10 percent of those homeless are in Allegheny County. “Whatever the reasons, why they are homeless is not important to us,” said Staudt, a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star. “At one time or another, all of them wore our nation’s uniform, and nobody deserves to be living outside in the cold without any protection.”

Currently, seven duffel bags are ready for veterans, but Staudt said that since a network is now in place, K. of C. Council 11887 is hoping the program will grow. “This is our first year doing this, and the help we’ve received from the VFW and other people has been fantastic,” said Staudt. “We’re hoping it is an activity we’ll be able to expand to help all of the homeless in our area – not just veterans.” For more information about the duffel bag program, or to donate, contact Ralph Graeser, K. of C. at: r.graeser@verizon.net. (Michael P. Mauer served as an Army photojournalist during Operation Desert Storm. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal by Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf for his actions during the war, and is a life member of VFW Post 914 Intrepid, West Mifflin.)

JOYFUL BLOOMERS GARDEN CLUB SHARES NEWS FROM MONTHLY MEETING The Joyful Bloomers Garden Club held their monthly meeting on November 3 at Kane Community Living Center in McKeesport. The meeting began with an interesting report on screech owls by Sally Buchleitner. Many species are nocturnal and feed on vols, mice and other rodents. Their flight is silent as they use sonar to find their prey. Would you like to reduce the amount of spiders in and around your house? Add 10 drops of essential peppermint oil in a spray bottle to a half cup of water. If you are planting bubs for the spring, make sure they are at least 6 inches in depth. The Joyful Bloomers participated in the Elizabeth Township Historical Society's Log Cabin Days in September and enjoyed meeting and talking to the residents of the community. Several members of the club attended a clean-up in one of the two courtyards at Kane. Weeds were pulled, bulbs were planted, and mulch was laid. What an improvement! The club will be taking part in McKeesport's ‘Festival of Trees’ being held December 2-6. We will enter a tree filled with ornaments that our members made at the November meeting. Our Christmas is planned for December 1 at Rock Run Inn. Please take the time to enjoy the Christmas Holiday Season and think about joining a garden club.

Through it all, we persevered.” Washington Symphony Orchestra’s holiday performance, “Ho Ho Ho with the WSO” is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 5 at 3 p.m. To allow more flexibility for social distancing, this concert will be held at the Washington County Fairgrounds on North Main Street in Washington. The Washington Jazz Orchestra will present a pre-concert program 30minutes before the WSO start time each day. Orchestra responding with selections from Duke Ellington’s The Jazz Nutcracker. Trinity Middle School and High School Chamber Choirs and St. James Parish Choir will be joining the WSO for the Hallelujah chorus and “Christmas Day.” There will be an opportunity for the audience to sing along on “Deck the Halls” and “12 Days of Christmas.” An electric guitar and bass will be added when the WSO takes on three Trans Siberian Orchestra pieces: “A Mad Russian’s Christmas” and “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.” “Horse and Buggy,” “Bugler’s Holiday,” and “Veni, Veni, Emanuel” will round out the program. Monessen Civic Center Sees Promising Growth By Matt Shorraw, Mayor, City of Monessen Since the City of Monessen reorganized its Recreation Board and hired a Recreation Director earlier this year, City Officials are beginning to see some positive growth at the Monessen Civic Center - a safe place for kids and parents to enjoy recreation, programming, and other opportunities. Since, reopening, the Civic Center offices were cleaned; old furniture and other unused items were removed, and new safety measures were put in place, such as a first aid kit, updated fire extinguishers, an AED, and multiple Narcan kits. With the leadership of the City's new Recreation Director, 22-year old, Julian Naphier, the Civic Center will be partnering with Scholastic to provide free books for Children. Partnerships have also been formed with the Monessen Public Library, Monessen Communities That Care, and the Monessen Youth and Young Citizens Board, which are all dedicated to helping Monessen's youth succeed.

Since re-opening, the Civic Center has held about 15 to 20 events for organizations and individuals, ranging from movie nights to basketball, meetings, and birthday parties. Naphier was also able to help multiple children during basketball practices held at the center. Additionally, the Civic Center is also acting as a donation center for items for the City's homeless youth - an initiative being undertaken by the City's new Youth and Young Citizens Board. Recreation Director Julian Naphier is also in the process of planning a Middle High School talent show to partner with Monessen High School / Middle School and the City's Recreation Department. Napier says, "Thanks to having a great team working with City Hall and great partners throughout the community and having a great Recreation board to work with we were able to get these things done. I am glad to have been hired in this position and look forward to all the upcoming events and community service projects we can participate in." The Monessen Civic Center is available for events, rentals, services, and public outreach for the Community.

South Hills Retirement Facility Celebrates Veterans Day Throughout November By Matthew Peaslee The spirit of Veterans Day was celebrated throughout the entire month of November at South Hills Square retirement resort in Whitehall. On Veterans Day, four local Unites States Marine Corps veterans presented the colors during a ceremony at the resort’s theater. More than 20 residents of the independent living facility are former military members. Some of the residents spoke about their experience in the armed forces and displayed their love of defending the great country of the United States. “Today is about honoring those brave enough to sign on the dotted line to defend our country,” said lifestyle director Ashlyn Kueshner, a member of the Army National Guard, herself. “No matter what branch, what gender, what age, what time, they represent freedom and courage.” Students at nearby Mother of Mercy Academy sent hand-written and handdrawn cards to servicemembers and residents of South Hills Square. “No amount of words could ever convey our gratitude,” said community manager Glenna Foster, whose son is a Marine. “Thank you to every single veteran from the bottom of our hearts.”

Later in November, South Hills Square residents along with students and staff at Mother of Mercy, helped to raise $625 that was donated to the Purple Heart Foundation. Donations to this organization provide PTSD resources to wounded veterans, care packages to homeless veterans, training and pairing of service dogs, college tuition for families in need and general financial help to veterans facing economic or medical hardships.

His Place Coffee Shop Gives Back to Mon Valley Community By Lois Thomson A new coffee shop opened in Monessen in September, but if you think it is just a place to stop in and get a cup of your favorite brew, you're mistaken. In addition to featuring specialty coffees and teas, along with a wide assortment of delicious pastries, His Place – located at 100 3rd St. – is committed to giving back to the community. His Place is owned by the board of a corporation called Full Potential Project, which owns the building – formerly a firehouse – and the coffee shop. According to Lisa Lyons, one of the board members, His Place was the dream child of Tim Burgan, lead pastor at Christian Center Church in Rostraver. Pastor Burgan previously hosted a program on Cornerstone TV called "His Place." Lyons said the program had a coffee shop setting, and people always wanted to know where the place was. "When he left, it was in the back of his mind to touch a community, and bring them hope and light; and what better way to do that than with a coffee shop?" Lyons added that Cornerstone gave them the rights to use the name. "We're a 501(c)3, we pay our employees the best wages and pay the bills, and the rest of the revenue goes back

into the community." One way that is done is by offering a free tutoring program for K-12 students Monday evenings. "It's called Illuminate, because we want to illuminate their brains, we want to turn the light on." On the second Thursday of the month, His Place – in conjunction with Monessen Public Library – holds a children's story hour, hosted by Marsha Adams, children's coordinator. Knit Wits, a knitting and crocheting group, meets once a week, as does an exercise and wellness class. Lyons pointed out that during these activities, there is a special room for children where their parents can see them at all times and know they are safe. His Place was four years in the planning, and Mike Hough, executive pastor of Christian Center Church, said, "We looked at a couple of different towns, but after a lot of prayer and a lot of looking, this is where God led us. We bought the whole building, and the church family raised the money, believing in the vision, which is to reach the community outside of church walls." Lyons added, "We didn't just come in, we had been doing outreach [in Monessen] for years. Opening a business is a new endeavor for all of us. It's been a blessing for us to be here."

PAIN MANAGEMENT Q: What are new treatments

for back pain? A: New, minimally-invasive treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis may be the answer. Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is the most common reason for patients older than 65 to have spine surgery. Symptomatic LSS can cause low back pain and/or leg pain when walking or standing that is improved with sitting or bending forward. Conservative treatments for LSS have tradiBy Anthony Cuneo, tionally included physical therapy, pain medMD, PhD ications, and injections. While surgery can be Physical Medicine effective for patients that do not improve with Specialist conservative treatments, these operations are The Orthopedic Group invasive and can have procedural and anesthesia complications. There are two new and exciting treatments available to patients with LSS that helps to bridge the gap between conservative treatments and invasive spine surgery. Both treatments address the root cause of spinal stenosis and are outpatient procedures performed at Spartan Health Surgicenter. They take about 45 minutes to perform and do not require general anesthesia. MILD (minimally invasive lumbar decompression) procedures remove excess ligament tissue to restore space in the spinal canal. MILD is as safe as an injection. Restrictions following MILD are minimal, with return to normal activity within a few days. Patients are typically able to walk for 16 times and stand for seven times longer following the procedure. Vertiflex is a spine spacer that can treat up to moderate stenosis. Following the procedure, 80% of patients have improved leg pain and 65% have improved back pain. There are six weeks of restrictions following Vertiflex placement, with potential complications including fracture where the spacer is placed and spacer migration. If you are interested in learning more, please call 724-379-5802 to schedule an appointment at The Orthopedic Group. Anthony Cuneo MD, PhD is a physical medicine specialist in pain management with The Orthopedic Group providing these procedures at Spartan Health Surgicenter.

and even frozen treats and peanut butter. The Braun TriForce Power Blender is a powerhouse that does the heavy lifting for meal prep. With 1600 watts of power that performs at four times the speed of previous blenders, the TriForce Power Blender brings extra ease and convenience to fit the bill for home cooks who are still juggling working from home with food prep and are unmotivated by the idea of leftovers for lunch to take to newly reopened schools and offices. Customization also sets the Braun TriForce Power Blender apart. The unique iTexture Control and automated settings include a soup setting that simultaneously heats as it blends, 10 manual speed settings, and multispeed pulse functions that allow for maximum customization and creativity. "The seamless intuitive interface makes it easy to quickly master recipes," says Stephanie D'Introno, the Communications Manager for Braun Household. "With the range of settings, you can effortlessly emulsify the toughest ingredients such as hearty root vegetables and dense chunks of ice, ensuring that everything from silky smoothies to savory spreads are equally enjoyable based on your preference." An easy interface lets prospective chefs choose from six food programs (smoothie, soup, chop, ice crush, frozen dessert and spread) and three different textures (smooth, medium, and course), to create 18 possible blends that will suit any palate. Other innovative key features include a triangular jug design to reduce waste by keeping ingredients from getting stuck in corners, and a German-forged Precision Edge blade for durability and performance over years of use. But wait, there's more: The Braun TriForce Power Blender cleans up after itself with a self-cleaning setting and an easy-to-wipe surface. Visit braunhousehold.com for more information.

5 Easy Tips For Preventing Unwanted Bugs In The Home This Winter (BPT) - With the shift to cooler temperatures, insects like to migrate to warmer weather. For homeowners during the season change, that can spell an uptick in bugs like spiders, lady bugs, cockroaches and more venturing indoors. To help keep homes protected and get rid of bothersome bugs, Raid®, America's most trusted insect control brand* backed by 60 years of research, shares five easy tips to help prevent uninvited pests from invading the home. 1) Keep The Kitchen Clean: Avoid leaving food or dirty dishes out for long periods, and clean up food spills immediately. Sweep and mop hard-surface floors weekly, or more often if you notice spills, and consider utilizing a vacuum on hardwood and carpeted floors weekly for anything that may have dropped under or between appliances. Identify and repair indoor water leaks, wipe down the insides of sinks and bathtubs and run a dehumidifier in damp areas, (Continued on following page.)

Take Care of Your Tools and Tackle Winter Weather

Winter is coming. It may not seem that way on a nice autumn day, but some parts of the country are already starting to feel a chill in the air, and those who live in snowy areas are thinking ahead. The increased opportunities for remote work prompted many people to relocate to other states, and some of them may be looking at their first experiences with snowy winters. Whether you are new to northern climates or a seasoned veteran of many blizzards, having the right tools can be the difference between getting around and getting stuck. To that end, a snow blower may become your new best friend. To help keep your snow blower in top shape, Cub Cadet, an American manufacturer of outdoor equipment including lawn mowers, yard tractors, and snow blowers, recommends (Continued on following page.)

six simple strategies to keep your snow blower working at its best. • Safety first. Before you begin a routine maintenance check, place your snow blower on a flat surface, and allow it to cool with the engine off. Be sure to remove the safety ignition key to avoid turning on the engine. • Change is good. Change the engine oil in your snow blower at the end of every season and after the first five hours of use this winter. • Spark it up. Check your spark plug at the start of the winter season. If it just looks dirty, cleaning may be all it needs, but install a new spark plug if you see rust or corrosion. • Boost your belt. Inspect the belts on your snow blower at the start of the season and replace them if they look worn. A fresh belt will keep your thrower functioning at its best and reduce the risk of its breaking during use. • Fill the tank. Drain the gas tank at the end of the season, and fill it with fuel that includes stabilizer. This ensures that the fuel stays fresh if you have a mild period during the winter when your snow blower is used less frequently. • Keep it smooth. Be sure to check that all the parts of your snow blower are moving smoothly, and tighten any nuts and bolts that may have come loose. Making Your Bathroom Work Harder For You (BPT) - The importance of designing a bathroom that balances easy living and functionality is often overlooked. Choosing the right bathroom mats - They can be a good starting point for decorating as they tend to determine the color scheme and mood for the rest of the bathroom. However, it is important to also choose floor mats for their durability. Bathroom floor mats get wet once to twice a day between showers and often people find they must replace their rugs sooner than expected for cleanliness. Consider if the material is absorbent, water resistant, machine-wash friendly and grips firmly to the floor for safety. The ultimate shower experience Having a quality bathroom equipped with functional décor is a crucial step. A versatile shower head that provides strong water streams, like the Peerless SideKick Shower System, is essential for achieving the perfect shower experience. The system installs onto the existing shower arm in minutes and does not require any additional tools for setup. It offers up to five different spray patterns that vary from relaxing, massage-like pulses to uplifting pressure and comes with multiple attachments designed for cleaning, washing your pet, and gently washing a child. Bathroom essentials for guests Make sure it is always stocked with essential items. Keep fresh towels in an easy place to spot so guests can grab when needed. Plug in air fresheners around the toilet to maintain a fresh aroma. More storage, less clutter While it may seem like the only option for storage is the sink cabinet, a simple installation of an additional storage unit can bring peace of mind. Try installing a shower caddy unit in the shower or an open shelf rack over the toilet. Building wall shelves is also an easy DIY project. These quick and doable ideas will help you, your family and guests love your bathroom even more.

The horticulture included Cosmos, Green Envy Zinnias, Hyacinth Bean vines, Cleopatra Cannas, Tropicanna Cannas, red Cleopatra Canna leaves, New Zealand Caster Bean leaves, Giant Caster Bean leaves and Mexican Sun Flowers. A few of her tips were: • Use chopsticks from a restaurant to stake small houseplants. • Give houseplants more light by placing them on a mirror. • Clean glass vases by filling the vase half full of water and add two denture cleaning tablets. • Use WD-40 to wipe rust form your tools before storing them for the winter. • To divide Zebra grass, use a sharp shovel, small backhoe, or better yet, don’t plant it anywhere it will ever need to be divided! District X encompasses the counties of Washington, Green and Fayette. For information on joining a GCFP garden club in your area, go to www.pagardenclubs.org and click on “Want to join a garden Club”, or call the Headquarters office at 717-7378219.
