Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency Announces $191,000 in Tourism Investments Washington County Pennsylvania, which is home to some of the country’s finest historical and cultural attractions, continues to lead the southwestern Pennsylvania region in both economic and tourism growth. To support this growth and leverage tourism’s impact on economic development, the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency (WCTPA) announced $191,000 in new tourism investments. The grants will be awarded to public and private organizations for capital and marketing projects in the 2022 tourism season. Historical and entertainment organizations such as the Bradford House Historical Association, Washington Symphony Orchestra, Washington Wild Things and McDonald Volunteer Fire Department will be receiving grants to promote their events. The agency will also invest in capital projects with the Burgettstown Area Community Development Corporation, Little Lake Theatre Company, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, and Washington County Historical Society. Diana Irey Vaughan, Chair of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, commented on the importance of tourism as a major economic driver in the county. “Washington County’s economy is not only being driven by energy, education and advanced manufacturing, but by a strong tourism industry. In fact, tourism continues to be one of the largest industries in the county with well over $700 million in direct visitor spending and supporting nearly 6,000 jobs according to the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development. These new investments in our tourism assets and attractions will support additional economic growth and increase our quality of life-attracting more leisure and business visitors,” Irey Vaughan stated. Jeff Kotula, President of the WCTPA further relayed that Washington County is a leader in business and leisure travel in the Greater Pittsburgh Region and the investments by the agency will continue that standing. “Washington County ranks second-behind Allegheny County-in our area for tourism and we are making these funds available to strengthen that position as well as invest in long-term tourism development,” Kotula stated. Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation Seeks Applicants for 2022 Community Service Scholarship
Kennywood Moves Opening Day Up to April 16, Showcases Park Improvements
$10,000 Award Given in Memory of Jamie Ellenberger
Park’s 125th Celebration, New Swing into Spring Festival to Begin Easter weekend
Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation (PMHF) encourages western Pennsylvania students to apply for the organization’s annual Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship awards $10,000 in funding for post-secondary education tuition costs to a high school senior who exemplifies the commitment of PMHF and the late Jamie Ellenberger to serving and improving their community. PMHF has provided detailed information about the scholarship to 246 high schools in the western Pennsylvania region, where Passavant Memorial Homes Family of Services (PMHFOS) provides a complete range of support services to over 10,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral health needs. The scholarship was created to honor Jamie Ellenberger, an individual PMHFOS was privileged to serve and who was an active member of the community. The principle of community is central to PMHFOS’s mission, including efforts to engage in community initiatives and be involved in community improvements. PMHFOS is seeking to award this scholarship to a student in the region who brings that same understanding of the value of community service. PMHFOS also intends for this scholarship to continue raising awareness about intellectual disabilities and the opportunities available to pursue careers in providing supports and services to individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral health needs. In addition to its focus on service to the community, criteria for PMHF’s scholarship include academic honors and awards and extracurricular activities, along with the completion of an application process and essays. Applicants must also submit three letters of recommendation highlighting the student’s character, academic achievements, and their demonstration of leadership in the community. Eligible high schools include those in the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Washington, and Westmoreland. Applications must be received by April 29, 2022, and additional information can be found at www.pmhfos.org.

Opening Day at Kennywood just got a week closer. Pittsburgh’s Premier Destination for Thrills & Entertainment announced recently that it will open on Saturday, April 16, for an exclusive Passholder preview. The park will be open for the public starting Easter Sunday, April 17. Kennywood’s 2022 season starts a multi-year celebration of the fun that first began in 1898. “From the moment Guests arrive in our parking areas, they will be greeted by a completely refreshed experience,” says Kennywood & Sandcastle General Manager Mark Pauls. “Inside the park, Guests will find major enhancements, all designed with their enjoyment and improved service top of mind. Just as it will take multiple visits to enjoy all the new events we have planned, Guests will need several visits this year to take note of all the upgrades made since the end of last season.” Kennywood’s enhancements begin in the parking lot, where changes will make navigation easier and the lot areas more attractive. Heading into the entrance plaza, a massive carousel horse will greet visitors along with vividly painted buildings. The ticketing and security screening process will be seamless: Guests will wait less for entry, giving them more time to enjoy everything Kennywood has to offer. The walk to the tunnel will feel brighter and bolder, thanks to upgraded landscaping and a nostalgic mural of past and present park staples. Inside the park, the Kandy Kaleidoscope is currently undergoing a complete top-to-bottom makeover. Guests will find new floor-to-ceiling windows to look in on the shop’s delicious treats and homemade fudge.
The inside of the shop is being reconfigured, making ordering and checking out quicker. To top it all off, a whimsical, larger-than-life candy theme will bring signature sweet treats to the midway for even more unique photo opportunities. The Old Mill, Kennywood’s oldest ride in operation since 1901, will see a new façade that better fits the attraction’s overall theming. While there, look up: new, color-changing lights will illuminate the midway all the way down to the Jack Rabbit’s grand entrance. Perhaps the most exciting update of all is the return of the Kangaroo which will open on May 28, during Memorial Day weekend. “The Kangaroo really is the centerpiece of this refurbishment,” says Rob Henninger, Assistant General Manager. “With its spectacular new backdrop, the Kangaroo looks better than ever and will soon be ready to bring its family-friendly thrills and excitement back to Kennywood!” Elsewhere, new directional signage is being constructed to help Guests better navigate the park, the Beer Garden is undergoing a full refresh, and operational upgrades at several food stands will increase the speed of service this season. Guests will also find self-serve drink stations and grab-and-go food locations in high traffic areas. The re-painting of the Thunderbolt and Phantom’s Revenge rollercoasters is nearly complete, with painters preparing to shift their attention toward the Jack Rabbit and Racer as the weather improves. Business & Merchant News Greenbriar Treatment Center To Join Gateway Rehabilitation Center Officials from Washington Health System (WHS) announced that they have entered into an agreement with Gateway Rehabilitation Center for purchase of the health system owned drug and alcohol rehabilitation locations known as the Greenbriar Treatment Centers. Under this agreement, all Greenbriar Treatment Center services will become a part of the Gateway Rehab addiction treatment network. It is anticipated this transaction will be completed by June 30, 2022. Brook Ward, President and CEO of Washington Health System said, “Greenbriar and Gateway have historically been the leading providers of drug and alcohol related health services in the Pittsburgh market and beyond. The proposed merger will enable the community, family members of those seeking treatment, and our referring healthcare professionals, to have a centralized and streamlined system to coordinated care for patients.” Benefits from the proposed agreement will keep the focus on the patient(s) that need help during their road to recovery. This includes a financially sustainable model for drug and alcohol services within our communities and continuing to provide the highest quality addiction and recovery treatments to the local members of our community while also managing costs. Mr. Ward also said, “We have been living in a rapidly changing healthcare environment for many years now and the need for addiction services in our area has always been imperative.” Now with the pandemic, the need is even greater and regionally focused alignments like this are a great way to the deliver
top rated care to local residents. “In order to best serve our community, WHS sought a partner that showed the interest and ability to maintain the high level of care and services we have always provided to our community,” explained Mr. Ward. Over the last several months, the leaders of WHS and Gateway Rehab determined that the best way to ensure a strong future for the delivery of addiction treatment was to join forces. James Troup, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Rehab, stated, “With this proposed transaction, staff, patients, partners and the community can be assured that services will continue to be provided including the long-term treatment facility located inside WHS Greene, in Waynesburg Pennsylvania.” Also, the vast majority of Greenbriar Treatment Center employees will be offered positions through Gateway Rehab and this transition will not affect services provided in the immediate future. Between now and June 30th, representatives of the three organizations will be finalizing all standard “due diligence” and completing documents related to the closing of the transaction. Once the transaction is complete, Gateway will operate the long-term inpatient residential facility, located inside WHS Greene (350 Bonar Ave., Waynesburg) as well as the Greenbriar Detoxification & Inpatient facility in Washington Pa, and the outpatient facilities in North Strabane, Monroeville, New Kensington, South Hills, Squirrel Hill, Wexford, Robinson, and two halfway houses (one for men and one for women).

Washington County Nonprofit Celebrates Staff During Developmental Disabilities Month Washington Communities Human Services Inc., a nonprofit specializing in behavioral health, highlights its employees who serve people with intellectual disabilities throughout March in honor of Developmental Disabilities Month.
Brittni Hodinko A three-year employee at the nonprofit, has had a passion for working with her population of consumers since she started in 2019. Her original position at the agency was a supports coordinator, but she got promoted to a supervisor role after a year. “I am making a difference in people's lives, Hodinko said.” “I want to ensure that everyone can have the opportunity to live an everyday life and have the supports needed to succeed.” As a supports coordination supervisor, Hodinko is able to oversee her own team of supports coordinators and manage her own caseload of consumers. Supports coordinators locate, coordinate and monitor support for individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities.
Ceaira Foli-Gbama A one-year employee and supports coordinator at the nonprofit, has enjoyed becoming an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. She stated that she likes how all her cases are different, and the job keeps her on her toes. “I like to help and be a voice for a population that may otherwise not have a voice, nor know how to obtain resources, Foli-Gbama said.” “The best way to support a client is to learn about each individual and assess their unique situation. This is how the right supports can be put in place.”
Ryan James A supports coordinator who has been with the agency for less than a year, has stated that his position is valuable because he is the stepping stone to help people with intellectual disabilities achieve the quality of life they deserve. “I want to help people, James said.” “I want to make people feel like they are more than a statistic, and you need interaction to show you truly do care. There is not a more honest, charismatic population of consumers, and to be able to advocate and help them achieve a life they want is the best feeling at the end of every workday.”
Audrey Platz A supports coordinator who has been with the agency for less than a year, has shown pride in being the change that others want to see. She has fully immersed herself into a positive role model for others to follow. “I like to work with my consumers because while they are different and have more challenges, it shows me that we are all the same person on the inside and out, Platz said.” “I connect people with intellectual disabilities to the everyday world, freedom and a chance to be undeniably themselves." Washington Communities Human Services will provide the entire intellectual developmental delay program staff with gift cards to further show appreciation at the end of March.

EXPERTS OPHTHALMOLOGY Q: When do I need cataract sur-
gery? What are my options if I do? A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescripBy Aaron S. Wang, tion of your glasses changes frequently, with M.D. diminishing improvements with each change. Ophthalmologist Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehenGlaucoma-Cataract sive eye exam to have your visual acuity measConsultants, Inc ured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well. The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving. Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops. There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.
THESE AREA SERVICE PROVIDERS ARE HERE TO ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS... If you have questions for our expert, send your questions to SOUTH HILLS-MON VALLEY MESSENGER, P.O. Box 13363, Pittsburgh, PA 15243 or e-mail news@messengerpaper.com An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing. A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Home & Garden The ABC’s Of 3D House Printing It may sound futuristic but there are people today living in homes created by a 3-D printer—and you can too. A. What is 3D Printing 3D printing started out as a way to make design prototypes for modeling. It has been used in healthcare, manufacturing and other industries. Now, the technology has spread and the cost of the printers has dropped. Most people are familiar with 3D printing for its ability to create small things, but construction-grade, largescale 3D printers is changing the housing industry helping builders create better houses, faster and at less cost. B. 3D’s Advantages Automation and increased productivity means 3D-printed house shells can be built on site with mobile and industrial-sized devices, up to nine times faster than with traditional methods while creating little to no waste of resources. That can save up to 30% of the cost. 3D also creates the opportunity for unique design such as curved walls (expensive if even possible with bricks and wood). What’s more, 3D homes can be (Continued on page 26.)

5 Tips for Gardening with Kids (Family Features) After months of cool weather, the first hint of spring will likely have the whole family eager to dive into outdoor activities. This year, as you begin tackling the garden, find ways to get the youngest family members in on the action, too. Not only is gardening an activity you can enjoy together, there are numerous ways to incorporate ageappropriate, teachable moments from counting and colors to responsible care of living things. Creating a positive first experience with gardening can start with this simple advice: • Dedicate a spot for a junior garden, which allows you to instill a sense of pride and ownership in the little gardener while protecting your own garden areas from ambitious young hands. • Provide appropriate tools in child sizes. Just as you would teach a child the finer points of baseball using a bat and glove, demonstrate the joys of gardening with tools such as a rake, hoe and trowel, all of which can be found in sizes more manageable for little helpers. • Let the kids choose what to plant. Whether flowers or food plants, allow children to make their own decisions (within reason) about what they would like to grow. This can help them engage in the magic of watching items they selected emerge from the ground and grow into their finished forms. • Encourage exposure to unfamiliar plants that entice the senses with appealing smells and flavors. Herbs such as chives, mint and basil are good choices, or consider edible flowers such as pansies or violets. • Set an example for your child to imitate by giving regular and proper care to your own garden. Remember to bring the lesson full circle by enjoying the bounty of your garden together, whether it’s a small hand-cut bouquet or a meal featuring your child’s fresh-grown produce. Find more tips for gardening with your kids at eLivingtoday.com. (PHOTO COURTESY OF UNSPLASH).

The walls are also reinforced to resist hurricanes and earthquakes. C. How It Works A standard pickup truck with a flatbed trailer can haul the building system to a construction site. No cranes or big crew are needed to deploy and operate the printer. Instead, an operator uses a joystick to maneuver the equipment and print the building walls. Then a robot creates the desired shape of a build-ing directly on site, layer by layer—the same as is done with traditional plastic 3D printing but using a strong concrete mortar instead of plastic and a much (Continued on following page.)

Zeroturn mowers, for example, are designed to ensure a picture-perfect cut with every mow. But with various options to choose from, the process can sometimes feel overwhelming. When researching which zero-turn mower is right for your property, consider the following: Where will you purchase your mower? A good starting point is a local outdoor power equipment dealer. Dealers are experts in their field, can provide thorough answers to your questions and service your mower when the time comes. In addition, they’ll be able to help guide you towards the right mower by asking pertinent questions such as, how big is the lawn you’re mowing? How often do you mow your lawn? This will help the dealer narrow down which units will best meet your needs. The primary operator should be comfortable with the mower, understand how to operate it and take it for a test drive to get a feel for how it operates. (Continued from page 30.) turn mower, function the same as pushing a shopping cart. Next, think about storage. Like most pieces of machinery, mowers last longer when properly stored in a shed or large garage that will protect against weather, rust and other damage. Once you decide on your zero-turn, ensure it will fit into your shed. Deck sizes vary, so there’s a chance the unit might be too wide to fit. Finally, consider your lawn’s conditions. Does it tend to be damp? Uneven? Covered in obstacles, like trees and bushes? The right mower will meet your lawn’s needs. For example, Hustler Turf’s recently modified Raptor family of residential mowers come standard with BigBite tires, which handle better than regular tires in any type of turf conditions. Re-engineered from the ground up, the Raptor series packs more performance, reliability and features to deliver a fluid mowing experience. Bumpy or uneven lawns might require a unit with a more comfortable seat and better suspension to ensure a smoother ride. Each Hustler Raptor model now has a tougher, wider one-piece tubular frame with stylish bolstered seats, standard arm rests and rubberized floor mats for more user comfort. These considerations will make the purchase process easier on you in the long run. Your local dealer will also help you and make sure you go home with the zero-turn that is best for you. For more information on zero-turn mowers and where to find a nearby dealer, visit www.hustlerturf.com. SM

Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home.
