Nomination

Scholarship Created in Memory of Bethel Park Catholic School Teacher Lisa Simpson

Warm. Gentle. Loving. Creative. Loved kids. Even-tempered. Good mom. Dedicated to the church. Dedicated to her family. These are the words often used to describe Lisa Simpson, but more than that, everyone agrees that she left this world far too soon.

Simpson was a preschool teacher at St. Valentine School (now Our Lady of Hope), in Bethel Park, for more than 15 years, but she passed away in February 2022 at the age of 54. However, she won't be forgotten because a scholarship has been set up in her memory to be awarded annually to one of her students.

Judy Mills was Simpson's boss – the director of the preschool, and also taught with her. Mills said Simpson, "was my best friend, the type of person that once you met her, you wanted to be around her as much as you possibly could." However, Mills appreciated not only her friendship, but also her dedication to her position. "She put her heart and soul into it. The families loved her, the kids adored her, she was creative, she brought out the curiosity in the kids, she was really a remarkable person. I'm very blessed to have known her."

The idea for the scholarship came from Carol Vater. Mills retired in August, and in addition to being director of the school, she ran the concession stand for St. Valentine's Tuesday night Bingo games. As Vater explained, "They were looking for someone to take over, and that's when the lightbulb went on. I said, 'I will do this if we can use the money for a scholarship.' Every Tuesday night I prepare the food, but I have a lot of great helpers. All the profits go into the scholarship fund."

Page

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have attended St. Valentine preschool and had Simpson as their teacher. They must plan to attend a fouryear college or university in the fall, and must also submit a short essay on why compassion, curiosity, or honesty is important in the world today – qualities that promote Simpson's legacy.

Kristen Horgan was the winner of the first scholarship and she received $4,000 toward her schooling. Mills said it was very difficult to choose, but she, along with two others, reviewed the applications, and she said, "We narrowed it down to Kristen because her essay was “so Lisa”, so humble, so giving; it was really something." She added, "I think this is a beautiful tribute to Lisa. She would be humbled that it was happening for her memory."

Thomas Presbyterian Church Thanks Community Support For Recent Fundraising Event

Dear Editor;

Thomas Presbyterian Church would like to thank all that attended and participated in our Car Show and Pig Roast that was held on August 19. This year’s event was the most successful one we have had so far. Because of your support, we were able to raise $7,000 for Life Changing Service Dogs for Veterans. This Pittsburgh based organization matches up military veterans living with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, insulin dependence, and/or mobility issues with trained service dogs. The bond that these service dogs make with these veterans is more than lifechanging, they are lifesaving.

In addition, we would like to thank Kilkeary Auto Body, Celtic Wealth Management, Jimmy John’s of Wexford, Greenpoint Metals, Ansol Inc., and Surplus Metals for supporting our event. We plan to make next year’s event on August 17, 2024 even better!

Sincerely,

Harmony Singers Seeking New Members

They have a jammed packed performance schedule this Fall and Spring with over 13 private and public concerts with a twist of theatre, comedy, and dance. The Harmony Singers are actively seeking new members. All voices are needed but especially men. If you are interested in joining or having them perform at your next event, please send an e-mail to: info@harmonysingers.org or visit their website www.harmonysingers.org.

City Mission Thrift Stores Voted 'Best of the Burgh'

For the work they do and the services they provide, the City Mission Thrift Stores – particularly the one in Canonsburg – were voted Best in the Burgh by readers of Pittsburgh Magazine for the second consecutive year. The money from sales at the stores support City Mission, which accepts the homeless and aims to set them on a recuperative path.

This life-changing organization in Washington, Pa., started in 1941 as a storefront that provided a bowl of soup and a place to sleep for up to eight people. It has since turned into a 175-bed facility comprising four separate shelters, one each for men, women, women with children, and veterans. And more than just a bowl of soup, it provides a transformational recovery program.

Trisha Schum, director of development, explained, "We work with the homeless to help improve their lives and get them back on their feet. The proceeds from the thrift stores help to do all of that."

The eight City Mission Thrift Stores are located in Belle Vernon, Canonsburg, Monongahela, North Strabane, Rostraver Township, Uniontown, Washington, and Waynesburg. Everything sold in the stores goes back into the mission, to run all of the programs offered to the homeless.

Those programs are designed to help transform individuals from homelessness to independent living, and along with food, clothing, and shelter, they provide medical services, legal assistance, and case management. The transformational recovery program encompasses addiction recovery, Biblically based counseling, parenting, job training, and vocational classes, among others.

The stores, and the 30,000 sq. ft. warehouse where donations are stored and distributed, also provide work experience for the residents, and the warehouse in Washington is where they can participate in the work therapy program. According to Schum, by working in the stores or the warehouse, individuals can gain experience and receive forklift or retail or other certifications. "So they're that much closer to being ready to join the workforce again."

The average stay at the Mission is between six and 18 months. "It doesn't take them a month to get homeless, so it does take a little time to work through the program. We give them as much as they need to be able to get on their feet again."

As to why the stores were voted the best, Schum said she believes it's a true testament to the managers and staff who work there. "I think all of them really do make a connection with the customers who come in." She added that the stores "make things more affordable for people who may not be able to buy at retail. It's really helpful for the communities they're in."

Happy 99th Birthday Alice Lyon

Well another year has come. Sometimes saying “Happy Birthday” falls short of words to describe your longevity. You have asked yourself “Why am I still here?” Others want to know “What’s your secret?” So, what is the answer to a long life. It may have been said many years ago in, of all places, the Bible. The only Commandment given with a promise is that you “Honor your father and thy mother so that your days may be long…” That’s the reward and maybe the answer. Happy 99th birthday Mum! On September 13, 2023.

Alice

Mrs. Lyons has been blessed with 4 children, Linda (Bob) of South Park, Darryl (Eileen) of Hatboro, PA, Mark of Whitehall, and John (Kathy) of Hatboro, PA, as well as 8 grand children, 13 great grand children, and 5 great, great, grand children.

Nomination Process Underway for WJHSD Hall of Fame

The West Jefferson Hills School District is accepting nominations for the district’s Hall of Fame. The district re-launched its Halls of Fame program last year and this past March, 29 Thomas Jefferson High School graduates and two Jaguar athletic teams were inducted at the Hall of Fame banquet.

Thomas Jefferson High School graduates who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academics, arts or athletics, as well as staff and community members, are eligible for induction, if they meet the established Hall of Fame criteria. Nominees included former students, teachers, staff and community members who have made unique and lasting contributions to the district and the West Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills and Pleasant Hills communities.

Nominations for consideration for the 2024 Hall of Fame class are due by October 31, 2023. The nomination form is available on the district website at: https://www.wjhsd.net/Alumni.aspx. Nomination forms also are available in the district administration office, 830 Old Clairton Road, Jefferson Hills, weekdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Nominees who were considered for induction last year will be included with the new nominations for the 2024 Hall of Fame class. The 2024 Hall of Fame induction class will be announced in December and the Hall of Fame banquet will be held in early March (time and location to be announced).

The application for the recently formed WJHSD Alumni Association also is posted at https://www.wjhsd.net/Alumni.aspx or available in the district administration office. Thomas Jefferson graduates and friends of TJ are welcome to join.

WJHSD Forming Alumni Association to Support Thomas Jefferson HS Students and Graduates

The West Jefferson Hills School District is creating an Alumni Association to support the storied history of its alumni and the success of future generations of WJHSD students in the growing district community.

The West Jefferson Hills School District dates to 1812 and in the mid-1900’s transitioned from the Jefferson School District, incorporating residents and students from West Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills and Pleasant Hills. The high-achieving and innovative school community is the fastest-growing in Allegheny County, with student enrollment increasing 12.2% from 201718 to 2022-23 to more than 3,300. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Thomas Jefferson High School No. 15 out of 132 Allegheny County high schools the past three years.

Whether it is a trade, a two or four-year college or university, a technical school, the military or a career immediately upon graduation from Thomas Jefferson HS, membership in the WJHSD Alumni Association will continue to support the future of the district community and Western Pennsylvania.

Membership in the WJHSD Alumni Association, which may be tax-deductible, will contribute to:

• Scholarships to support district academic programming

• Networking events for past and future alumni

• Information on TJHS Class Reunions

• Mentoring current students and providing internship opportunities

• Creation and expansion of TJ alumni achievement displays and digital presentations

• Recognition opportunities for inaugural class of Alumni Association members

Membership is open to all graduates of Thomas Jefferson HS as well as friends who want to support the successes of the district’s future generations within the West Jefferson Hills community as they embark on their professional journeys.

WJHSD Alumni Association membership is $25 for a two-year term or $200 to become a lifetime member. Applications are available at: bit.ly/3L4K6Sl or the WJHSD Administration Building, 830 Old Clairton Road, Jefferson Hills, weekdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Checks should be made payable to WJHSD. The creation of the Alumni Association is part of the district’s initiative to further engage with district students, under the direction of Superintendent Dr. Janet Sardon, who is a Thomas Jefferson HS graduate. Last March, the district celebrated some of its most successful alumni in academics, the arts and athletics at the inaugural Hall of Fame induction dinner. Nominations for the 2024 WJHSD Hall of Fame class are being accepted until November 15, 2023 and the application is available at the Alumni Association/Hall of Fame link on the Information tab on www.wjhsd.net or at the WJHSD Administration Building.

Budget-Friendly Ideas to Boost Curb Appeal

(Family Features) Your home's first big impression is its curb appeal, so if your place is in need of some sprucing up, you may wonder how you can make some updates without breaking the bank.

These 10 ideas are easy on budgets, but they can also make a big impact on your home's exterior image.

1. Paint your front door. As long as your front door is in good condition, there's no need to replace it completely. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update your home's facade. Go bold or stick with a classic hue - it's all up to you.

2. Dress up the windows. Add character and charm by enhancing your front windows. You might add wooden shutters, window box planters or both. Also look at the trim around the windows. If it's chipped and peeling, adding a fresh coat of paint doesn't just look nice, it can protect your windows from damage, too.

3. Clean up flower beds. An unkempt flower bed can drag down an otherwise stunning home. Keep beds tidy and vegetation trimmed, even

during the offseason. Watch for weeds and replenish mulch or rock ground cover as needed to keep the beds looking healthy and inviting.

4. Install new lighting. Replacing outdated light fixtures can give your exterior an instant upgrade. There's no right or wrong style; just choose a color and look that matches the rest of your design.

5. Replace worn welcome mats. A cheerful mat at your front door can be an inviting sight for visitors, but those mats inevitably wear with time, and what was once bright and charming becomes dingy and dull. A new mat can help bring back that cheery entry you once cherished.

6. Pressure wash the drive and walk. Over time, driveways and sidewalks collect an incredible amount of grime. Pressure washing not only eliminates the filth, but the clean surfaces also add to your home's visual appeal.

7. Add new vegetation. Landscaping is a relatively inexpensive way to introduce more personality to a yard. Aim for a mix of pretty and practical, such as some low flowering bushes and some trees or bushes that offer privacy and shade.

8. Keep up with basic maintenance. When your home is in poor repair, it shows. Pay attention to bent or rusting gutters, imperfections in the roof and other maintenance matters that aren't just aesthetic; left unrepaired, they can also result in major damage.

9. Pay attention to details. Functional items like the mailbox might not seem like much of a design

element, but these small details can be a big distraction if they're not in good condition. Update or replace as needed to keep your aesthetic in sync.

10. Add seasonal decor. There's no need to go all out for every occasion, but some timely decorations that celebrate the holiday or season can make your entry fun and festive. Coordinate wreaths, planters, signs and other accent pieces for a cohesive look that says, "come on in."

6 Key Steps For Planning A Kitchen Remodel

(BPT) - Designing your dream kitchen is an exciting endeavor, but it requires careful planning and consideration. Follow these six essential steps to ensure you create a kitchen that perfectly fits your lifestyle and needs.

• Assess your lifestyle: Consider how you use your kitchen. Are you an avid cook? Is it a family gathering space? Do you often host large groups? Understanding your lifestyle will help guide your design choices.

• Evaluate your existing kitchen: Take a close look at your current kitchen. Identify what you love and what needs improvement. Think about storage, prep surfaces, and any changes you want to make.

• Set your budget: Determine a realistic budget for your project. Prioritize your needs over wants, but leave room for upgrades and extra touches that catch your eye.

• Select the right professional: Trust the expertise of a professional who communicates well and understands your vision. A skilled designer can bring your ideas to life and guide you through the process.

• Plan smartly: Measure your kitchen's size and consider infrastructure concerns like electrical and plumbing. Focus on workflow and customize storage solutions to fit your family's daily living.

• Avoid common mistakes: Stay away from overloading with cabinets, ensure sufficient counter space, and (Continued on following page.)

ASK EXPERTS the ASK EXPERTS

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc.

NEUROPATHY TREATMENT

South Hills Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers Now Have Hope

Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA is currently scheduling patients at their Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road. Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.

“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it.”

Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 11,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.

This Fall, have Tri State Neuropathy Centers help you get back to enjoying all the activities that you love.

To schedule an initial no-cost consultation, call 412-207-2398. Learn more at www.marydancedin.com.
