Santa Claus Is Coming To Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Pennsylvania Trolley Museum’s stockings are hung by the trolleys with care with the knowledge that Santa Claus will soon be there! The merriest man himself will be visiting the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum (PTM) during their annual ‘Santa Trolley’.

Join PTM during December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, & 17 for this spectacular event that runs from 9AM-5PM. Please view the website listing for exact departure times. Guests will have the opportunity to climb aboard a beautifully restored antique streetcar that will transport them around the museum’s 2-mile track. While aboard, visitors will get to meet Santa Claus and a few of his friends may show up as well! Santa will be happy to have visitors take a picture with him.

You can also stop by PTM’s large Lionel toy train layout and view the wonderful LEGO layout built by Steel City Lug, Pittsburgh Area’s Adult LEGO User Group. Children can do a holiday craft, and everyone can enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and cookies. Tickets include a second festive trolley ride aboard the Yuletide Shuttle. For the first time, we will also have our Trolley Display Building open during Santa Trolley so visitors can enjoy the rest of our collection as well!

Admission for the Santa Trolley is $20 for adults, $19 for seniors (62+) and $18 for children ages 3-15; children under 3 are free. This admission will include your trip on the Santa Trolley, trips on the Yuletide shuttle, and access to the open exhibits at the museum. This event is extremely popular, and we strongly suggest advance ticket purchases be made online due to the limited seating. The tickets can be purchased on the PTM’s website at www.patrolley.org.

During the month of December, PTM will also be hosting their Trolleys and Toy Trains event, held on Fridays, December 1, 8, & 15 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Visitors to this event will be able to ride on our decorated trolleys and to view the Lionel toy train layout. Admission for Trolleys and Toy Trains is $13 for adults, $12 for seniors and $11 for children ages 3-15; children under 3 are free.

By Jill Runfola A ‘Light Up the Night’ event was held at North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 6:00PM, and attendance of all ages. Santa was set to arrive on a fire truck thanks to the North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department at 6:30 pm. Each child was gifted a small treat bag from Santa as well.

“We typically expect 100-150 children to visit Santa during this event,” said Cody Ambrose, Volunteer for NBV Recreation Commission. The adult attendees were able to enjoy a bonfire and holiday music as the children waited for Santa. This also gave visitors to the park an opportunity to walk around and mingle with one another. In addition, the NBV Recreation Commission gave out free hot dogs and hot chocolate. The kids were so excited to see Santa, some chanted his name and many stood in a very long line just to visit him.

The Light Up Night had something for everyone - food, fellowship, fun, and especially Santa! It was a great night to kick off the holidays in North Belle Vernon!

Greater Pittsburgh Regional Career and Technical Education Open Forum Connects Students and Faculty with Pennsylvania's New State Director In an effort to strengthen the ties between Pennsylvania's Bureau of Career and Technical Education and the educational community, Steel Center for Career and Technical Education hosted a groundbreaking open forum in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania today. The event aimed to facilitate direct engagement between Mr. Judd R. Pittman, Pennsylvania's new State Director for Career and Technical Education, students, and faculty from across the Greater Pittsburgh region.

Appointed by Governor Shapiro in July, Mr. Pittman assumed his role in August, determined to develop strategies to enhance career and technical education (CTE) programming throughout the state. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Mr. Pittman initiated surveys and engaged with CTE leaders to identify areas of success and opportunities for improvement within Pennsylvania's CTE landscape.

The concept for the forum emerged after an initial meeting between Mr. Pittman and the Pennsylvania Association of Career and Technical Administrators State Officers, including Steel Center's Executive Director, Kevin Rice. Mr. Rice remarked, "It's easy to see that Mr. Pittman is serious about building on the past successes of CTE in Pennsylvania while moving us for-

ward. We wanted to provide him with an audience of career and technical education students and staff from the Greater Pittsburgh region to share their successes and address existing barriers."

Invitations were extended to all career and technical education schools in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Fayette, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties.

The response was overwhelming, with more than sixty participants representing institutions such as Beaver County CTC, Mon Valley CTC, Parkway West CTC, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and many others.

"Today's activities showcased the collective dedication of students and staff from diverse backgrounds and CTE programs. It was an invaluable opportunity for Mr. Pittman to gain insights into the region's achievements and challenges, reinforcing his commitment to advancing Pennsylvania's CTE landscape," said Mr. Rice.

The forum emphasized the collaborative spirit essential for the growth of career and technical education in the Commonwealth. Mr. Pittman expressed gratitude for the warm reception and welcomed the chance to work together in shaping a brighter future for Pennsylvania's students and workforce. According to Mr. Pittman,

By Jill Runfola The City of Monongahela held their annual Veterans Day Parade and ceremony on November 11, 2023 to pay tribute to those who serve our country in the military.

The memorial ceremony was held at 11:00AM at 7th and Main St., Chess Park in Monongahela. Rev. Dr. Zayzay Kpadeh, of First United Methodist Church of Monongahela, performed the Invocation.

“Remember all the veterans who are here in a special way, especially those who could not be seen,” said Kpadeh. “On this historic day, we lift up all the special veterans who have gathered; may God continue to bless veterans today and of the future.”

During the Benediction with Pastor Josh Greene of Journey by Grace Church, Pastor Josh said that it’s our job to do more than just get to know veterans but he encouraged us to remember the benefits we have because of their service, the benefits to live, love and create a safe place.

COVER STORY: Pleasant Hills Middle School Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive Delivers for Community The Pleasant Hills Middle School’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive again was a tremendous success, thanks to staff, students, families and members of the WJHSD community coming together to help those in need.

The drive has been a tradition for more than 20 years for PHMS students, staff and the community to provide food and again demonstrate the empathy District families have for those in need in the Mon Valley and South Hills.

Approximately 20,000 lbs. of food was donated.

Members of the community began bringing food items to bins at PHMS and all district schools in mid-October. Fans attending the Oct. 27 TJ football game helped “Pack the Truck” with the donations they brought to TJ Stadium.

Six students in Mike McCabe’s PHMS 7th Grade homeroom each collected and donated more than 100 cans for the drive: Nico Curl, Justin Lorenzi, Mycah McCabe, Emma Murtagh, Natalie Sear and Vanessa Warden. The four girls went door-to-door in their neighborhoods and combined to collect more than 600 cans of food.

“It’s important because some people don’t have enough food or enough food for a Thanksgiving meal,” Mycah McCabe said. “I believe it’s important to be generous and to be kind. My friends and I went around the neighborhoods and were able to collect a lot of cans for the food drive.”

PHMS teacher Mike McCabe had his head and beard shaved by students after losing a bet on how many cans they could collect for the food drive.

All items collected during the PHMS Thanksgiving Food Drive were donated to the food bank at the Olivet United Presbyterian Church in West Elizabeth. Middle school students and staff loaded the donations onto a 26-foot truck and a pick-up truck and unloaded the items at the church in time for distribution prior to Thanksgiving. The PHMS donations will help those in need through February 2024, according to the West Elizabeth Food Bank.

Pleasant Hills Middle School teachers Bob Kerr and Mike McCabe were the co-organizers of the

PHMS Food Drive. McCabe, who teaches 7th Grade Social Studies, challenged his homeroom class to collect 1,500 cans of food and promised to have his head and beard shaved if the class met the goal. His students just edged past the goal with 1,521 cans collected and several students and PHMS teacher Will Boger shaved McCabe’s head before loading the truck.

According to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Feeding America, more than 235,000 people are facing food insecurity in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

JHIS Students Recognized for School Newspaper at WJHSD Board Meeting

Nearly 20 Jefferson Hills Intermediate School (JHIS) students were recognized by the West Jefferson Hills School Board at their October meeting for their efforts in producing the school’s newspaper. The ‘Paw Print News’ is created by JHIS students who are part of the 5th Grade Newspaper Club. The online newspaper is produced several times during the school year and has its own website: https://sites.google.com/wjhsd.net/pawprintnews/home . The club’s advisor is JHIS teacher Amanda McWilliams.

The JHIS students showed Board members the October 20 edition of Paw Print News on the new iPads the district began implementing for K-5 students this fall. The JHIS students also use their iPads to produce Paw Print News.

Business & Merchant News AHN Opens State-of-the-Art Imaging Center at Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Draws to a Close, Network Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to Unveil Leading-Edge Imaging Technology and 3D Mammography Machine Representatives of Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network (AHN) joined community leaders for a ribbon-cutting on Monday, October 30 to celebrate the grand re-opening and expansion of the network’s Imaging Center at the Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion. The state-of-the-art facility will open to patients later this afternoon.

Located at 1010 Higbee Drive in Bethel Park, the 10,000-square-foot imaging facility will serve as a convenient access point for patients in southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County who need advanced imaging services, including MRI, CT, mammography, ultrasounds, DEXA bone density scans, echocardiograms, and radiography services. The imaging center at Bethel Park has been under reconstruction since March 2023. Before its closure, it was one of AHN’s highest-volume imaging centers, and upon reopening it is expected to serve over 25,000 patients a year.

“Radiologists save lives, which is why best-in-class health care also requires best-in-class imaging technologies and services – and that’s what we now have at Bethel Park, thanks to AHN and Highmark Health,” said Bethany Casagranda, DO, Chair of the AHN Imaging Institute.

“From urgent care needs and diagnostic cardiology to cancer care, orthopedic and women’s health issues, providing an accurate, timely diagnosis often depends on quality diagnostic imaging. Today is an exciting milestone for the AHN Imaging Institute, and our caregivers look forward to serving patients from this beautiful new facility,” Dr. Casagranda said.

The AHN Imaging Center at Bethel will be open Monday through Friday and open the first and third Saturdays of the month. Walk-in services are available exclusively for x-rays; to make an appointment, patients can self-schedule by visiting ahn.org or calling 412-DOCTORS. Established AHN patients may also schedule via MyChart.

“We’re extremely proud to offer extended hours and evening appointments for patients with acute situations, or who simply have busy schedules,” Dr. Casagranda continued. “This new facility is a testament to our organization’s mission to transform care by offering the highest level of innovation, care and flexibility in our communities, providing world-class care, closer to home.”

Bethel Park’s Imaging Center will also offer minor procedures typically performed in a hospital setting, including ultrasound-guided breast biopsies and stereotactic breast biopsies, the latter of which uses computer technology to guide a needle to an abnormality detected on a mammography exam.

“This exceptional imaging center now boasts the latest breast imaging technology, ensuring accurate screenings and early detection,” said Sarah Thomas, DO, radiologist and medical director of the AHN Imaging Center at Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion.

Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion is now one of the first health care centers in the area to offer 3D mammography, which has been found to detect more breast cancers than 2D mammograms, especially for women with more

dense breasts, Dr. Thomas said. Additionally, AHN is the only health system in Pennsylvania to have its adult imaging centers recognized by the American College of Radiology as “Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence” – the highest honor in the field.

AHN Announces Plans for New Full-Service Hospital in Washington County to Replace Canonsburg Facility State-of-the-Art, All-Private-Room Hospital Will be Built on Existing Medical Boulevard Campus, With Expected Opening in 2027 Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and Highmark Health recently announced plans to build a new full-service, all-private-room hospital in Washington County to replace Canonsburg Hospital. The new approximately 300,000-square-foot facility will have 50-100 beds and will be built on AHN Canonsburg’s existing Medical Boulevard campus in North Strabane, representing another significant milestone in the network’s strategy to bring more comprehensive, world-class care closer to home for residents in Washington County and the nearby communities of southern Allegheny County.

Construction of AHN’s new, state-of-the-art Canonsburg facility is expected to begin in 2024, pending all necessary approvals, and will open in 2027. AHN will also develop the new clinical campus to accommodate additional planned facilities, including a medical office building and a potential future cancer center. The total investment to transform the medical campus is approximately $232 million.

The new hospital will provide an array of advanced clinical services, including primary, emergency, and critical care; state-of-the-art surgical capabilities; advanced cardiac, orthopedic, and neurosurgical care; and various multi-disciplinary programs including women’s health. The facility’s clinical programs and medical staff will be aligned with AHN’s leading Institutes across all disciplines, further expanding the reach of the network’s nationally recognized clinical expertise. “The population served by our Canonsburg Hospital has grown over the years and we are excited to create a beautiful, modern facility and clinical campus that will enable us to better meet the diverse healthcare needs of the community and advance our living health model,” said Jim Benedict, President, Allegheny Health Network. “Our goal is to provide enhanced access to a much broader array of integrated, high-quality, comprehensive clinical programs that will enable more patients to stay close to home for the services they need.”

Washington County’s population, now approximately 210,000, has experienced minimal-to-moderate growth over the past decade; however, the communities around Canonsburg – including Cecil Township ( 12%), Chartiers Township ( 10%), North Strabane Township ( 8%) and Peters Township ( 4%) – have experienced considerably more growth, with continued population gains expected in the coming decade, according to projections from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission.

Canonsburg Hospital’s service area also is home to approximately 115K Highmark members. The new AHN Canonsburg Hospital is expected to create hundreds of additional permanent health care jobs when fully operational, as well as hundreds of construction jobs. Currently, there are approximately 400 employees at AHN Canonsburg, all of whom will be tracked to the same roles at the new facility. “Designing an exceptional clinical environment for our physicians, nurses and other caregivers is essential to providing the best possible experience for our patients,” said Donald Whiting, MD, Chief Medical Officer at AHN. “As with all of our new facilities in recent years, we look forward to our caregivers playing a key role in helping us determine the look, feel and functionality of this new hospital to help us fulfill that promise.”

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescripBy Aaron S. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

School News...School News Thomas Jefferson High School Salutes Veterans With Inspirational Celebration

Thomas Jefferson High School students and staff honored and celebrated local veterans, including TJ graduates who’ve died in the line of duty, on Friday, November 10 during a powerful and inspirational Salute to Veterans recognition and celebration at the school.

The day began with a breakfast for the veterans and local first responders, with more than 70 veterans attending the breakfast and program. Flanked by a huge American flag in the theater, the TJ band, orchestra and choir performed several patriotic songs, including a rousing Armed Forces Salute compilation with accompanying video to end the program.

The audience of veterans and the entire TJ student body and staff heard the inspirational story of U.S. Marine Eric McElvenny. A native of Belle Vernon, McElvenny was wounded after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan and had his lower right leg amputated. He has been racing since 2013 and finished sixth overall in the triathlon at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. He has completed eight full Iron Man races, completing his first Iron Man competition 22 months after his injury.

Louise Biddle, a retired teacher from WJHSD and community leader in the South Hills and Mon Valley, gave the Invocation and TJ senior class president Jaylen Hocker gave the welcome address.

Thomas Jefferson HS principal Pete Murphy was the emcee and primary organizer of the salute.

Thomas Jefferson senior Aidan Oeler presented a slideshow and spoke about the 10 TJ graduates who’ve died in service to our nation in Vietnam, Lebanon and Iraq. They are: Robert Guy Brown, Charles Thomas Lee, Thomas Burkhardt, James Dewar, Frederick P. Gillen, Thomas V. Haas, Robert Doering, David C. Bruggeman, Richard A. Morrow and Steven W. Freund. A memorial plaque with the names of the 10 deceased servicemen is located in front of TJHS.

Oeler also spoke about the history of U.S. military songs and wished the U.S. Marine Corps’ a happy 248th birthday (USMC founded on Nov. 10). The TJ Marching Band also participate in the city of Pittsburgh Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11.

PHMS Students Lauded for Varied Accomplishments at WJHSD Board Meeting

Pleasant Hills Middle School (PHMS) students were recognized by the West Jefferson Hills School District Board during its monthly meeting for a variety of accomplishments, including the school’s successful Thanksgiving Food Drive.

A total of 15 PHMS students were honored by the Board, including four for their efforts with the annual food drive: Mycah McCabe, Emma Murtagh, Natalie Sear and Vanessa Warden. Each of the students donated at least 100 items and they combined to collect more than 600 food items. Approximately 20,000 lbs. of food was donated to the food bank at the Olivet United Presbyterian Church in West Elizabeth on Nov. 15, with PHMS students and staff loading and unloading the donations from all WJHSD schools and community.

A quartet of Jaguars were honored for their patriotic service to the school by regularly raising and lowering the American flag. The students are: Santino Ciccanti, Ben Galluppi, Henry Leidy and Isaac Stiteler. The quartet of Boy Scouts recently recognized that the flag needed to be lowered when the school’s spotlight on the flag went out and needed to be replaced.

Six PHMS 7th grade students enrolled in Architecture class were feted for the designs they created in the class’s recent competition "Re-

Imagining Century III Mall." Two classes of PHMS students worked on a re-design of the vacant West Mifflin mall in small groups. The students could either use the existing Century III Mall structure for their re-design or use the land that would be available if the structure was torn down. At the Lock Haven University Middle School Cross Championships, Lauver placed 17th out of 124 middle school runners from across Pennsylvania and finished No. 5 among all 7th graders to earn a medal. He also was invited to participate in the USATF Youth 5K National Championship the day before the New York City Marathon and finished sixth in the Boys 13-14 race and 17th overall in all Boys age groups (13-18). Lauver and three other district runners have qualified for the USATF National Cross Country Junior Olympic Championships in Louisville, Ky. on December 9.
