50 Years Ago – Ringgold Hoops Ruled the WPIAL
The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame would like to recognize the 50 year anniversary of the 1972-73 WPIAL champion Ringgold boy’s basketball team. The socks were high, the shorts were short, and the hairstyles were groovy – but with a 29-2 record, this team was a force to be reckoned with. (And YES – that’s a young Joe Montana in the front row wearing #12).
Clairton’s Iyanna Wade Reaches 1,000 Points –And is Just A Sophomore!
By Matthew Peaslee
Just a sophomore, Clairton girls basketball player Iyanna Wade has already made a name for herself. The skilled shooter and strong ballhandler reached 1,000 points for her career in early February. That mark came as she has played in just 36 games at the varsity level.
She reached 1,000 on Feb. 6 against Greensburg Central Catholic, one of the top teams in Westmoreland County. Wade tallied 35 points in the game, which included draining six 3pointers.
Wade averages around 35 points per game and had a career-high 50 points in a single game this season, coming in a 70-32 victory over Steel Valley.
She stands at just 5 foot, 3 inches but plays much bigger than her size. She isn’t scared to drive the line and fights for all rebounds, loose balls and tipped passes.
According to WPIAL Today, Wade “makes everything look easy on the court. She has an excellent shooting stroke and great handles. She will stop and pop from anywhere. She can dribble drive and finish at the rim. She can also facilitate and play some defense.”
Wade averaged 25 points as a freshman and has accelerated her career this season. Twice this year she has gained notoriety across the state and the nation. In January, she was named SBLive’s National Girls High School Basketball Player of the Week from Jan. 2-8. And for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4, she was named Pennsylvania’s Girls High School Basketball Player of the Week. The sky is the limit for one of the top players in the class of 2025.
