Ribbon Cutting Held for Phase 2 Completion of Betty Ambler Park in Rostraver

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, March 21, 2024 to celebrate the completion of Phase 2 for Betty Ambler Park in Rostraver. Phase 2 included the installation of an ADA playground, picnic tables and other site amenities. Total project cost for Phase 2 was $59,706.80 of which $55,288 in funding was obtained from a Westmoreland County Community Development Block Grant.

For Phase 3, Rostraver Township is awaiting approval on a CDBG grant in the amount of $72,129.41 (applied for $61,280 in grant funding) to install a pavilion, parking and stormwater management at the previous Betty Ambler Park Location on Zundel Street.

Running for Delegate to Republican Convention as Committed Donald Trump Supporter

Following the Super Tuesday primary success of Donald Trump, Melanie Stringhill Patterson made her formal announcement as a Delegate to the Republican Convention. She wants the voters to know that they can count on her to vote for Donald Trump alone as the Republican candidate for President in the 2024 General Election.

“In this year’s Presidential Election, we must ensure that the best candidate is elected. That candidate is Donald Trump – bar none,” stated Patterson.

“We are living in trying times. Our nation is a crossroads. We must secure for ourselves, our children and grandchildren, a prosperous and safe nation with Donald Trump as our President, added Patterson. “Otherwise, we will see runaway inflation, debt and misery for years to come.”

With rumors swirling in Republican circles that some delegates to the Republican Convention might not vote for Donald Trump at the Republican Convention this July, Patterson made it clear that she will have no part of such actions. She boldly stated her position by saying: “Any attempt to vote for another candidate other than Donald Trump would be a huge disaster for our nation. I will reject any and all attempts to replace Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for President in the 2024 General Election. You can count on me as a Donald Trump delegate without question.”

The Republican Convention will be held from July 15-July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

WJHHS members are invited to bring one or two items for appraisal; non-members may bring one item for appraisal. Deadline to Apply for Valley Garden Club Scholarship is April 13

The Application deadline is April 13 for students applying for the $1,500 Valley Garden Club scholarship to assist students pursuing an education in the study of horticulture, agriculture related fields, landscape architecture/design, botany, plant pathology, forestry, agronomy, environmental concerns, city planning, land management. The scholarship will be awarded for the full academic year and will be given directly to the student to further his or her education. Students are asked to visit their guidance counselor for application information. No financial information is needed to apply for this scholarship.

Penn Highlands Mon Valley Auxiliary Donation to Help Oncology Patients

The Penn Highlands Mon Valley Auxiliary recently donated funds to the Hahne Cancer Center at Penn Highlands Mon Valley to provide Cancer Care Packets to new medical oncology patients. The comfort packets contain lotion, lip balm, sunscreen, a stress ball, hard candy, gum, an inspirational stone, cozy socks, appointment book, healthy snacks and puzzle books.

“We have a soft spot in our hearts for the hospital’s oncology patients,” explained Arlene Haney, President of the Auxiliary. ‘We want to let the patients know that we have been there and know firsthand what they are going through.”

The Auxiliary members raised the funds through raffles; vendor sales such as bakery treats, ice cream, food trucks and crafts; as well as from the snack cart that takes low-priced treats to patients.

The Penn Highlands Mon Valley Auxiliary has approximately 30 active members who provide regular services to the hospital such as staffing the lobby welcome desk and serving as hostesses in the snack shop.

Mon River Arts Academy Summer Camp Registration Open

Mon River Arts Academy is now registering for their summer camps for ages 5-14. Their Grandstage Musical Theatre Camp is a two week half day camp for ages 8-14, and runs July 8-12, and 15-19. “Friends” To Have Various Fundraisers For South Park Library Expansion Fund

The “Friends of South Park Library are selling Sarris candy bars to help raise funds for the South Park Library expansion. They have 7 different types of candy bars to purchase for $2. If any candy is left, they will be sold at the book sale, which is coming up on April 18. Their book sale is aways a big fundraiser. They hold two book sales a year. One in spring and one in fall. This year, the April sale will have an extra special feature besides Sarris candy and their Walt Disney Lithographs.

Since wrapped basket of goodies were popular at our Library Christmas Craft show last November, the Friends have decided to make up some special baskets for “Mother’s Day”. They will be displayed in the community room lobby during the sale. You may purchase them for Mother’s Day, when at the sale. Prices start at $10.

The Friends will have various fundraisers from time to time to achieve the goal needed for this expansion. They will also accept donations at any time. To donate just make out check to ‘Friends of S.P Library’ and mail it to 2675 Brownsville Rd. So. Park PA 15129. Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser to Help Local Victims of House Fire

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is being held for local residents Dana Givens and Justin Patterson who recently had a house fire. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 2:00PM to 6:00PM at the California Hill Gun Club, located at 150 California Road, in Brownsville. The cost for adult dinners is $12 and children under 10 will cost $8. There will also be a Chinese Auction and 50/50.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will be holding their second annual ‘Spring Craft and Vendor Show’ on May 18 from 10:00AM to 3:00PM at the South Park Economics Building located at 2050 Buffalo Drive in South Park. Peters Creek Historical Society Program to Discuss Local Mine Disaster

"The Cincinnati Mine Disaster of 1913" will be the featured program of the Peters Creek Historical Society on Monday, April 22, at 7:30pm. The program will be held at Wrights United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Venetia.

Len Marraccini, society member and curator of the mining room at the Enoch Wright House will present the history of this local mining disaster caused by a major methane explosion and subsequent fire that took the lives of 97 men, young boys and a rescue team member. Many photographs will reveal the dramatic, sorrowful impact the disaster created in families and the community.

PCHS Hosting ‘Tiara Tea’

The society will be hosting a "Tiara Tea" beginning at 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 18 at the historic Enoch Wright House, 815 Venetia Road, Venetia. Guests are encouraged to wear a tiara or fancy hat while enjoying savories, sweets and brewed tea in the charm of 19th Century ambiance. Belle Vernon Public Library to Hold Jewelry Sale Fundraiser

The Belle Vernon Public Library will hold a two day Jewelry Sale at the library on April 19 and 20 as a fundraiser. All items in the sale are donated from the community with a variety of costume, semi-precious and novelty jewelry. Some pieces are vintage from names you would know.

The first day is a presale event on Friday from 6:00PM – 8:00PM with a $5 admission fee which will entitle the purchaser a sweet treat from Sarris candy which the library has as an on-going fundraiser. The sale continues on Saturday from 9:00AM to 4:00PM when the library closes. That day is open to the public to browse and buy as they desire.

The sale was originally planned for autumn of 2023 but had to be postponed because of repair work done to an interior wall of the library. Belle Vernon Public Library is located at 505 Speer St in North Belle Vernon. For more info, call 724-929-6642.

Spaghetti Dinner at Knights of Columbus in Monessen on April 21

Knights of Columbus Monessen Council #954, in conjunction with Epiphany Ladies of Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, will be holding a spaghetti dinner on April 21, 2024 at our Council Hall located at 1925 Grand Boulevard, Monessen. Dinner will consist of spaghetti, meatballs, green salad, bread and dessert. Dine-in seating will be available from 11:30 AM until 5:00 PM on the 21st. Take-out service will also be available. Market Set For May 18

Giant Oaks Garden Club (GOGC) will sponsor its 23rd Annual Plant Sale/Garden Market on Saturday, May 18 at the Peters Township Public Library, in Peters Township. The sale will highlight a large variety of hanging baskets, annuals, and quality potted perennial plants selected from members’ gardens. The sale runs from 9:00AM until 12:00 noon, rain or shine. Time strictly enforced.

Also featured are container gardens of herbs, vegetables, and annuals. The sale also includes new and lightly used gardening items, decorations, and crafts as well as raffle baskets of gardening items. GOGC members, several of whom are Master Gardeners, are available to assist and answer individual gardening questions from the public.

The Plant Sale/Garden Market fundraiser helps fund contributions to many local community groups, including the Peters Township Library, Phipps Conservatory, Western PA Conservancy, Peters Township Meals on Wheels, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, the National Aviary, and many more. The club also awards two $1,500 scholarships to a local graduating senior planning a course of study in a gardening or conservation related discipline.

GOGC celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022. The Club has 67 active members and eight subscription members.

Gary has done two John Denver Tribute Concerts and also a Bobby Vinton Concert in Billings, Montana. He also sang for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the National Rifle Association, The Gideons International, the International Elks Association, and the Billings Montana Minor League Baseball Association. PA License to Carry a Firearm Satellite Event Scheduled in Jefferson Hills

State Representative Andrew Kuzma is sponsoring a PA License to Carry a Firearm Satellite Event on Saturday, April 6 from 9:00AM – 3:00PM at 925 Old Clairton Road in Jefferson Hills. Plans are underway for the store to work with residential homes for children and mothers escaping abuse to get them necessary items, along with various other agencies the church already aids.

It’s all done for the good of the community, according to store manager Norma Conley. New or gently used items are accepted, such as clothing, housewares, lamps, etc. Not accepted are electronics, TV‘s, and large furniture. The donation bin is always open to the public.

“When I moved back to the area after retirement from teaching, I started working at Care and Share and have been manager for the last 5 years,” said Conley. “It takes a dedicated team to operate the store where volunteers work practically

every weekday. Nothing goes to waste; items we can’t use are donated to the Salvation Army. We also offer weekly sales that keeps our customers happy.”

Weekly a team comes in, sorting through things, and discarded items go into a bag for the Salvation Army. Conley says they wouldn’t be able to do this without the Salvation Army, and of course, the volunteers, too.

“Hopefully,more people will find out about our bargains,” said Conley. Low prices are for the entire family too. Newborn-5T are 25-cents, Toddler-10 are 75-cents, 12-14 Kids are 75-cents, Women’s dresses are $2, Men’s shirts are $1.50, and Suits are $4. There are women’s and men’s shoes for $2. They also offer other merchandise, such as lamps, purses, books, seasonal items, etc.—stop in to see what all is offered.

The shop has been in operation for over 30 years now, begun by one of their church members, Betty Copenhaver. Betty had the idea about Care and Share while on vacation in Deep Creek, Md., where she

visited a church with a thrift store and the idea was born. At the time, many of the mines and mills had closed and she helped the community. The store has been open ever since, helping those in need and offering clothes and items at discount prices. Those in serious need are helped at no charge.

All this caring and sharing requires a lot of volunteering. If you think you have the heart of a volunteer to work for this shop, contact them at the church office at 724-938-2270. Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Whitehall Resident Victoria Schmotzer Announces Her Candidacy For Pa State Representative - 38th District

Victoria Schmotzer recently announced her candidacy for PA State Representative from the 38th Legislative District.

“We filed all the paperwork in Harrisburg and we are on the ballot,” said Schmotzer. “My team knocked on hundreds of doors and collected 653 Democratic signatures. We got over 150 signatures more than any other candidate.”

Victoria’s education and work experience lend themselves to the pressing issues of today. With a deep-rooted commitment to our communities, Victoria brings a vision and record of leadership to this Office.
