Galleria Mall Will Once Again Host Spring Art Show

The Galleria is hosting a ‘Spring Art Show’ on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 14. The show will be held at The Galleria, Mt. Lebanon, 1500 Washington Rd, in Mt Lebanon, throughout the first floor of the mall. Show hours are Monday through Saturdays, 10:00AM to 7:00PM and Sundays, 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. Several art leagues including South Arts Pittsburgh, Whitehall, McMurray Art League, Bethel Park Art League, and Photo Section will be participating. Please come and check out a variety of original artwork and photography by local artists. Artwork and photos are framed and ready to hang in your home or given as a thoughtful holiday gift. Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 12 noon –3:00pm at the Pet Supplies Plus store, located at 120 Sara Way in Belle Vernon. Photos are a $10 donation for a 4x6 digital print in a magnetic frame or just $5 if you prefer to take the photo with your own phone. Open to ALL pets. CARING FOR AGING PARENTS COMMUNITY SEMINAR -

The Deacons of Thomas Presbyterian Church are sponsoring a Community Seminar which will be held on March 2nd, from 10-12 at the Christian Life Center at 1068 Linden Road. Eighty-Four PA. This is a rising problem with young adults having to deal with their aging parents. Maureen Sirianni, CVT from Country Meadows, has helped people facing this problem of Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s with their loved ones. Attorney Bowman expresses the importance of a Living Will. Both have very helpful information to assist in the care of their loved ones. Maureen and Attorney Bowman will answer questions at the end of the program.

‘SPRING IS NEAR’ CONCERT - A Musical Tribute to Holocaust Survivor Howard Chandler. The Bay Chamber Players announce an upcoming concert, "Spring is Near," that promises to be an unforgettable musical journey. The concert will be held on Sunday, March 3, at 4:00PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at 4048 Brownsville Road, in Brentwood. This extraordinary event features compositions by Saint- Saens Dauber, Bruch, Boulanger, Beethoven, Massenet and a heartfelt tribute entitled “Holocaust Remembrances” written by Gil Bigenho dedicated to the indomitable spirit of Holocaust survivor Howard Chandler. Live! Casino Pittsburgh To Host Boy Band Experience As Tribute Band Series Continues

Live! Casino Pittsburgh has announced that boy band ‘Larger Than Life’ will hit the stage at The Venue Live! in June. Are you ready for a night of '90s nostalgia? Larger Than Life is the No. 1 boy band experience in the country, performing all your favorite boy band classics from N*SYNC, The Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block and many more. 26th Annual ‘Fleatique on the Mon’ Set for June 1 Applications for Vendors Now Being Accepted

Artisans, crafters, flea market, antique and food vendors are needed for the 24th Annual ‘Fleatique on the Mon.’ This fabulous event will be held in Chess Park, and throughout Monongahela and New Eagle on Saturday, June 1 from 8:00AM until 3:00PM. Crafter and antique dealers will be featured in Chess Park, while flea market vendors and information booths will be located on Third Street, beside PNC Bank. Food Vendors are need at both locations.

Application deadline is May 24, 2024. Booth spaces for antique, craft and flea market vendors are 15” for $30. Food vendor spaces are 20” include electricity for $45.

This unique event is known as the largest street sale in Southwestern Pennsylvania! Running along a three-mile stretch of Main Street, also Route 88, 837 and 136, in Monongahela and New Eagle, businesses, churches, and homeowners participate with yard sales, bazars, rummage sales and garage sales. Free parking and free admission.

An Evening with Lewis and Clark The Symposium on Life and Customs in Western Pennsylvania

The Bradford House Historical Association and Washington & Jefferson College Present the 2024 Symposium on Life and Customs in Western Pennsylvania on Friday, April 5 at 6:30pm. This event will at The Chapel at Old Main on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, in Washington, PA.

This year's speakers feature ‘Meriwether Lewis’ and ‘William Clark’, portrayed by Doug Thomas and Steven Edenbo. Thomas is a professional actor who has been involved in historical interpretation for over 15 years, and Edenbo has been interpreting with the American Historical Theater since 1999. Together, they bring the explorers to life and offer an in-depth look to the famed men's lives and the bridge to the frontier.

Lewis and Clark regale audiences with stories of calm bravery in the face of danger, determination in the face of overwhelming odds, and good, old-fashioned adventure from the adventures of the Corps of Discovery. The interplay between the distinct personalities of the Captains made them a leadership team unsurpassed in American history. Those same differences in personality are now the ingredients for an entertaining stage performance that mixes humor with facts that allows audiences of all ages to truly enjoy an educational experience. Every presentation ends with a question & answer session, allowing the audience to lead the conversation in the direction of their own choosing.

This symposium tailored towards a younger audience will also be held on Saturday, April 6 at 10:00AM at the Meeting House, 182 South Main Street, Washington, PA. This event will be geared towards children, ages 8-12 years old (grades 3-6).

West Jefferson Hills Historical Society Program to Discuss Route 66

How would you like to go back in time to take a journey down the famed Route 66? Not familiar with this historic highway, you say? Established in 1926, Route 66 is one of the country’s most famous highways. Traveling from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, it covers over 2,400 miles. The route was used by many who migrated west during the 1900s and has been popularized in songs, TV series, and even the Faulkner novel, The Grapes of Wrath.

Curious to learn more about this famous thoroughfare? Come to hear historian Dick Gaetano’s engaging stories about this fascinating piece of America’s past at 7:00 P.M. on March 27, in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building. This extraordinary event features compositions by Saint- Saens Dauber, Bruch, Boulanger, Beethoven, Massenet and a heartfelt tribute entitled “Holocaust Remembrances” written by Gil Bigenho dedicated to the indomitable spirit of Holocaust survivor Howard Chandler.

Holocaust Survivor Howard Chandler's remarkable story, chronicled during his 2011 journey through Poland with Dr. Zipora Gur, founder of Classrooms Without Borders, serves as the inspiration for this concert. Musician and educator Gil Bigenho, Jr. who accompanied Howard on this transformative trip, was deeply moved by poignant visits to Treblinka, Majdanek, and Auschwitz, where Howard was imprisoned. Howard's unwavering resilience in the face of the Holocaust and post-war injustices, including the illegal seizure of his family home, made a lasting impression on Mr. Bigenho.

The centerpiece of this evening will be a premiere performance of Gil’s composition. Mr. Bigenho, violinist will be joined by vocalist Barbara Winters from Wellsboro, Pa. and his pianist Will Phifer. This three movement composition entitled "Holocaust Remembrances" is being dedicated to Howard Chandler, his family, and all those who endured the darkest chapters of this history.

The Future of Healthcare in Washington & Greene County Washington Health System Chooses Affiliation with UPMC

Washington Health System (WHS) has proudly served Southwestern Pennsylvania for 127 years with a mission of providing Great Patient Care close to home. What began as a singular entity in 1897 for the purpose of providing healthcare services and medical training has grown into a system of more than 40 locations spanning multiple counties and employing 2,700 people across the region.

While WHS remains Washington County’s largest employer and continues to invest resources to better meet the needs of local residents, the system has not been immune from the challenges many providers – particularly in rural communities – have faced in the post-pandemic landscape.

Approximately 27% of Pennsylvania’s rural hospitals are at risk of closing due to growing financial pressures, according to the Pittsburgh-based Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. Following years declining patient volumes, increased overhead costs, and government insurance reimbursement not keeping up with

overall expense increases – WHS, together with the Board of Directors, decided it was time to make a change. They did so before becoming a statistic became inevitable and the ability to maintain high quality care was in jeopardy.

The Board’s goal was simple and clear: make sure WHS can continue to serve local communities with the best healthcare and to be a rewarding and secure home for employees, both current and future.

Having received multiple bids from providers across the region and assessing potential partners on a multitude of criteria, keeping patients front of mind, the Board made a unanimous decision. UPMC would be WHS’ partner of choice for the future.

Affiliating with UPMC – a longstanding partner already serving 10,000 WHS patients through various clinical joint ventures – advances the shared goal of delivering the highest quality of healthcare to regional residents. This affiliation will be good for patients, ensuring

local access to care and maintaining current services. It will be good for employees, sustaining current jobs while offering world-class benefits to attract new talent and opportunities. And it will be good for communities, ensuring that WHS can continue to provide long-term exceptional care today and well into the future.

As part of the affiliation agreement, UPMC has made several commitments for at least 10 years. This includes maintaining Washington Hospital as an acute care general hospital along with its key services, maintaining core services such as emergency care, diagnostic, ambulatory, and primary care in Greene County, and investing a minimum of $300 million in capital in WHS. The Washington Hospital Foundation will be funded with $40 million as of the closing of the transaction, which will be used exclusively to support programs in the Washington and Greene communities.

This is all while expanding services and ensuring delivery of the highest

quality of healthcare to regional residents.

While the regulatory approval process of the affiliation is still ongoing, WHS is hopeful it will be completed as soon as possible. WHS employees, public officials, members of the building trades, and UPMC personnel voiced their overwhelming support for the affiliation at a public hearing held by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General in January. As described, time is of the essence – as each month goes by without the affiliation, the current WHS system is placed in further financial strain.

“Our affiliation with UPMC will ensure that when you – our patients and community partners – need us, we’ll be there for you. Just as we are now,” Brook Ward, President & CEO of Washington Health System wrote in an op-ed. “We believe the Washington and Greene communities deserve world-class health care. We’re taking action to keep that mission, now and for many years to come.”

Cover Story: West Jefferson Hills School District Foundation for Education Announces 10 Teacher Grants

The West Jefferson Hills School District Foundation for Education will be distributing 10 grants to district teachers totaling nearly $10,000 through the Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

All WJHSD teachers may apply for a grant for school-related projects that are consistent with the curriculum and goals established by the district. Grants may be used for educational materials and supplies, classroom equipment, or other expenses that support educational activities. Any materials purchased through the grant become the property of the district.

The grants are provided from fundraising and donations made to the WJH Foundation for Education. During the past six months, the

Foundation has sold school blankets, cornhole games, holiday flowers and TJ lapel pins. The Foundation also hosted a highly successful ice cream social in August at Thomas Jefferson High School. A Bingo Night is planned for Saturday, May 4 at the Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish –St. Elizabeth gymnasium.

Among some of the purchases and projects by WJHSD staff from this year’s grants are:

• Three CKLA curriculum projects;

• The Pleasant Hills Middle School Outreach program, which includes providing blessing bags with toiletries for a homeless shelter and Police Appreciation bags for local law enforcement;

• Environmental Science lab project

• G.O.L.D. Night event

Thomas Jefferson High School Theater Students to Perform “Beauty and the Beast” for Annual Spring Musical

Thomas Jefferson High School’s Gene Kelly Award-winning musical theater students are presenting, "Beauty and the Beast," for their annual spring musical, with opening night set for Thursday, March 14. Performances are at 7:00 pm on March 14, 15 and 16, with shows at 12 noon and 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 17 in the TJ Theater.

“Beauty and the Beast” is directed by Jim Benedek, who teaches Technology Education at TJHS. Julie Tipton, a TJ English and theater teacher, is the assistant director. Auditions for the spring musical were held in December and rehearsals began in January.

Tickets can be purchased online at https://tjhs.ludus.com/index.php. Online advance tickets are $15; anyone age two or older will need a ticket. Anyone interested in attending “Beauty and the Beast” is encouraged to buy their tickets in advance; previous TJ spring musical shows have sold out and sales weren’t available at the door. Free parking is available in front and behind the school.

Thomas Jefferson High School’s “Anything Goes: 2022 Revision” won three awards at last spring’s Pittsburgh CLO Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater. Jaguar student Ashley Caldwell was named Best Supporting Actress. For the second consecutive year, TJ’s musical theater students captured Best Vocal Ensemble and Best Crew/Technical Execution in its budget level. Thomas Jefferson’s Anything Goes was nominated in all eight Gene Kelly Awards ensemble categories, including being one of the two Best Musical nominees in Budget Level IV.

In conjunction with the spring musical, the TJHS Marching Band is sponsoring its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser and TJ musical theater celebration on Saturday, March 16 from 3-7 pm. The dinner will be held in the TJ cafeteria and there is a 7 p.m. performance of "Beauty and the Beast" that evening. 6 Things To Know Before You Start

(BPT) - When you want to enhance your outdoor living space, consider building with retaining wall units. Segmental retaining wall (SRW) units are the basic building blocks of landscaping, and you will save on design and labor costs when you do it yourself. Whether you want to level a slope, build a sitting wall or add a raised patio, it's essential to get informed before starting your project.

1. Check local rules. "Call 8-1-1 before you dig" is essential. Do-ityourselfers also should check with their municipalities and homeowner's associations for building codes, permits and/or property variance rules. Some municipalities require permits for walls up to four feet tall, although engineering might not be needed for that height with most SRW systems. A retaining wall taller

than four feet might require geogrid for soil reinforcement and an approved design by a professional engineer. A landscaping supply store will know local permitting and can identify plans that might require an engineer.

2. Consider where you will buy supplies. A landscaping supply store is a great place to get educated, purchase landscaping products and rent tools such as a compactor. A dedicated landscaping store can help you choose which wall system is best suited to your project, calculate the materials you will need and offer advice before, during and after installation. "Do-ityourself customers are the foundation of who we serve at Patio Town stores," said David Johnson, who manages one of Patio Town's three locations in St. Paul/ Minneapolis.

3. Learn about retaining wall systems. Some systems are easier to install, and some require specialty pieces for corners, curves and steps. The VERSA-LOK Standard retaining wall system is easy to install, and no special pieces are needed to build features. VERSA-LOK Standard is a solid unit that is renowned for ease of installation as there are no voids in the unit to fill. Splitting the unit allows you to create curves, corners, columns, multi-angled corners, freestanding walls and steps.

4. Mark off, measure and photograph the project area. In addition to giving details about your project to your landscaping supplier, you might need advice to determine soil conditions or stormwater requirements. For

example, clay soil retains water so it may need amendment, or the wall might require drainage pipes based on soil and other factors. You can discuss the content of your soil with landscaping store staff, who can offer ideas on remediation if needed.

5. It is all about the base. The base is the most important course. Retaining wall manufacturers and landscape suppliers can offer product-specific details on how to excavate and prep the base. After excavating a trench for the base, the subsoil should be compacted before a few inches of gravel is added and compacted. Make sure the area is level before starting the base course, which should be embedded half of the block's height at a minimum. With solid units such as VERSALOK, there is no need for concrete footings as the base course serves as the foundation.

6. Finishing touches to consider. After each unit is placed and leveled, fill and compact the gravel placed behind the wall. Finish off your wall with capstone units that can be secured with adhesive; be sure your adhesive has elastic properties as modular walls are flexible so they can withstand freeze-thaw cycles.

Another important point to consider is the weather! Bad weather can hinder your installation. With a little planning, know-how and a trusted landscaping store that shares advice throughout your project, you can build successfully with retaining wall units.

handle are strongly connected and can withstand reasonable pressure. Finally, spend a few minutes testing out the tool to ensure it fits well in your hand.

Rake: With numerous materials and shapes to choose from, finding the right rake can be intimidating. A basic fan-shaped rake with metal fingers is a universally accepted, long-lasting option. Select a model with plenty of give in the fingers if you'll be raking large areas and don't want to damage the ground below. A rake made of firmer metal allows you to work and smooth soil. Purchasing the broadest width you can comfortably handle allows you to cover more ground, which means less work.

Depending on the space you'll be tending, you may also consider purchasing a garden fork, which has fewer tines than a traditional rake and is ideal for aerating, weeding and turning small sections of soil.

Hoe: Whether flat or pointed, a hoe is essential for a weed-free garden. Flat versions can also be useful for breaking up clumps and hard spots on the surface while pointed hoes make quick work of rows and mounds to protect and irrigate your plantings.

Shears: A variety of shears are available to accomplish a wide range of garden tasks. Larger shears are ideal for big jobs such as shaping hedges, while smaller pruning shears are meant for snips and sprucing. Quality metal and sharp blades are important features. Be sure to choose a model with a safety latch to lock blades when not in use.

Gloves: Even if you eagerly embrace the chance to get your hands dirty, no tool shed is complete without a sturdy pair of gloves. Choose a material tough enough to protect from thorns but pliable enough to allow for free movement. Proper fit is key to avoiding blisters.

Alma Gilliam, the mother of former NBA Player, and Bethel Park native Armon “Hammer” Gilliam has written a book titled: Journey of Faith, Challenges, and Courage. We may not always understand the plan or will of God and what He allows in our lives; however, there is hope on the other side of every trial life has to offer!

Gilliam’s book is the testimony of how one's character can be shaped through life events - good or bad. The voice of this beautiful matriarch, Alma Gilliam, exudes warmth, faith, strength, and courage through every page as she chronicles some of the most impactful life events she has endured. As she shares her testimony of triumph over racism, loss, and unfathomable pain, you will cry, you will laugh, you will rejoice, but most importantly you will be inspired to believe that God's hand will carry you through any life challenge if you just choose faith!

Gilliam held a book signing event on February 17 at the Bethel Park Public Library from 1:00PM – 3:00PM. Proceeds benefited Meals on Wheels Bethel Park, Light of Life Mission and Feed the Children.

Monessen Senior Center Holds Fun Music Therapy

The Monessen Senior Center recently started holding ‘Music Therapy’ sessions for their clients. Some music has been so beneficial that the recent sessions have been funded by a state grant. Sessions began in January and are held on the 4th Thursday of every month, until the grant runs out, tentatively in May.

The staff at the senior center and experts from Fine Art Miracles, Pittsburgh, agree in the power of music therapy. The sessions themselves are truly unique and involve live, one-woman concerts.

“When I came in Jan., I thought to myself, ‘wow’ this is great,” said Marsha Adams, manager of Monessen Senior Center. “I said that more people need to know about her,”(Jillian Storm, singer).

On this particular day, people were in for a real treat listening to Ms. Storm as she played guitar beautifully and sang lovely, folk style songs, some country, and even rock music, hold-

ing the attention of the well-attended audience. From “Beast of Burden,” to “Take a Load off Fanny,” the mostly popular songs were enjoyable.

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute.
