Some big changes are in store for the 78th annual Mother Lode Fair, which starts Friday. Many will notice the decision to cut down this year's event to three days instead of four, with the elimination of Thursday due to low attendance in previous years. The fair will be open longer each day than in the past to make up for the shortened schedule, running &om noon to midnight Friday and Saturday and noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday. 'Vile have a bigger and betterfair in a smaller amount of time,"said Stacey Dodge, who is in Dod g e her fi rst year as fair manager and CEO. Dodge was hired last August by the Mother Lode Fair Board of Directors, replacing interim fair manager and CEO Forrest White. She previously served on the board for 17 years and had worked as the fair's marketing manager since March 2014. One of Dodge's main goals is to foster more community involve-
ment with the fair, she said. "The county-fair feeling is really what I'm looking for ... more like a festival than just a carnival fair," she said. "Everyone has a talent of some kind, and the fair is really the place where you can show that off."
Carnival passes for a full day of unlimited rides are available pre-sale through Thursday for $15 per person. They will cost $20 perperson during the fair This year, the fair will also offera "gold ticket"passfor$45 per person that includes main-gate admission, unlimited carnival rides and a meal and beverage from a carnivalfood booth for all three days of the fair. Gold tickets are offered pre-sale only through Thursday and can only be purchased at the fair office. Grandstand events, which include monster trucks, truck and tractor pulls and demolition derby, are $5 each day in addition to the price of admission. Mother Lode Fair 2015
4 — Tuesday, July 7, 2015
Sonora, California
Mother Lo e Fair a place to make memories The 2015 Mother Lode Fair is here — the highlight of the summer in Tuolumne County. I remember my first fair in 1963. I loved how the fairgrounds were right downtown, not out in the country, and the lights made it a spectacular show at night. I loved that is was a real country fair with animals, pies, cookies, preserves, handiwork, art, carnival rides and "fair food," all
in one location. There was always music and dancmg, great musical acts and lots of noise in the arena. You saw W a gner family and f riends and always met new ones. You screamed on the rides, cheered
up on corn dogs and funnel cakes! You admiredthe handiwork and art and would have loved to taste some of those baked goodies, and if you had entered an item, being proud of your accomplishment when you saw that ribbon. In the livestock area, you marveled at the dedication of the youth
events in th e
a r ena, danced to
with their animals, the excitement
some music newcomers, and filled
of the auctions and the support of
the community. Hot days in July, but always the nighttime cooldown for a comfortable night out. And guess what? These memoriescan be made by you thisyear! Our fair has something for everyone. All these activities mentioned will be there. Check out the entries and be amazed by the talent. The music acts will get your rhythm going, the carnival rides will get your heart thumping. The roar of the engines in the arena will get your adrenaline pumping, and the live-
stock auction will bring a smile to your face. I look forward to the fair every year, and the excitement builds as I walk down the midway, knowing another set of memories will be made. Our fair is awonderfulrepresentation of our county, and the fair staff and board wish you a memorable experience.
Toni Wagner is president of the Mother Lode Fair Board of Directors.

Entertainment for the whole family offered at the fair By LACEY PETERSON The Union Democrat
This year's Mother Lode Fair will be full of entertainment for the whole family. From a hypnotist to a stiltwalker, bungee jumping toan entirekiddie area — there'ssomething for everyone. "It's going to be a great fair with a lot of entertainment," said Stacey Dodge, Mother Lode Fair chiefexecutive officer. This year, the fair has a new comedy hypnotist, James Kellogg, who will help audience members find their "inner-superstars" in his comedy-hypnosis show. The show is a fast-paced blend of comedy, music and audience antics that explores the subconscious minds of people. Dodge saw him in Reno and said he is very interactive with the audience.
Kellogg will perform inside the John Muir Building on its main stageallthree days ofthe fair. A family and kids area will be set up around the Manzanita Building throughout the f air. The Science Company will offer an activity called "Puzzlemania"
in the area, and there will be hands-on, science-related exhibits and activities, said Michelle Keefe, fair administrator. The Puppet and Players Little Theatre will perform three shows per day on the Wagon Stage. The shows will feature classic marionettes, hand puppets and live performers. It i s a E u ropeanstyle theatre on wheels. A free arts-and-craftsarea for

From homemade cakes and flower arrangements, to photography and quilted items, the Mother Lode Fair features a variety of exhibits for adults and youth. Toni Wagner, president of the Mother Lode Fair Board of Directors, said people submitted their work for judging for a variety of exhibits, including arts and crafts and baked foods. W agner said there are difFerent systems of judging for adult and kids. "The adults are judged as first, second and third in that class division," she said. 'The juniors are judged on what is called the Danish system of judging, which is where they' re judged on their own merit.... They' re not judged against each other." Best of Show and Best of Tuolumne County awards are also given in each category. JeriWagner, thefine artsand home art department head, said that judges are specific to each category. "They' re professional judges. They knowtheirphotography, they know their art, they know their quilting ..." she said. She said that open judging will be incorporated into the bakedgoods category. "People can stay, watch the judging and see how they' re judged."

Those top four animals are then
judged to determine the auction's Supreme Grand Champion in a given species. Every animal is then put up for bid during what Livestock Superintendent Shelley Truelock said is the most exciting part of the whole auction process, with everyone getting wrapped up in the enthusiasm of the crowd and encouraging other buyers.
