Dial-a-Ride service will remain available to all military veterans and seniors without confirmed disabilities. The Tuolumne County Transit Agency board unanimously rejected proposed changes Wednesday that would have limited the special curb-to-curb service to military veterans for transportation to medical appointments and those age 60 or older who are certified under the Americans with Disabilities Act. aI would like to make a motion that this dies where it came from," said board member Bill Canning, who also serves on the Sonora City Council. More than 30 peopleattended a jo i n t m e eting Wednesday of the t r ansit agency and Tuolumne County Transportation Council. Twelve people spoke against the proposed changes. No one voiced support. Riders pay $3 per trip to use Dial-a-Ride and must live within three-quarters of a mile from the county's normal bus route. The service is operated under contract by StorerTransportation, based in Modesto. Darin Grossi, executive directorof the transportation council and transit agency, said the changes to the eligibility requirements could prevent roughly 10 percent of riders from using the service. Forcing those riders to use the county's normal bus service would have saved approximately $37,000 peryear, Grossi said. Edna McCarthy, of Sonora, said Dial-a-Ride was a critical

After dinner Tuesday, Connie Cassinetto sat on her Gibbs Drive porch quietly sipping tea and enjoying the evening when she noticed her 9-year-old Boston terrier miniature schnauzer, Gracie, perk up and look at the pond in the yard. Hummingbirds danced around the trees and dipped into the pond, squirrels played nearby. It seemed like a whimsical scene straight out of Snow White. Except for the large and chiseled mountain lion drinking from her pond, 20 or so yards away. "I was in shock," she said. "I tried to quietly move away from where it might be able to see me, but it made direct eye contact with me as I turned away. Gracie stood in alert at the edge of the porch watching the lion." When Cassinetto looked back moments later, the lion was gone.
