relative newcomer to the American marketplace, Hyundai is a Korean automaker with a product line that has improved greatly over the past decade. Hyundai cars and SUVs provide a high level of content for an affordable price, and are currently backed by one of the industry's longest warranties. Since the '90s, Hyundai has invested heavily in new product designs and improvements in overall quality and reliability, and it all started to pay off by the start of the new millennium, with the 2001 Elantra in particular showing massive improvements in overall quality, reliability and perform-

ance. Other models followed suit and the desirability of Hyundai cars increased sharply. Providing an extraordinarily long warranty period didn't hurt either. Today's lineup is indicative of Hyundai's complete turnaround. Hyundai has a vehicle for nearly every segment, including the economical Accent subcompact, the popular Elantra compact, the midsize Sonata sedan (also available as a hybrid), sporty Genesis and Veloster coupes and a couple of stylish SUVs. Hyundai has also expanded into the entry-level and premium-level luxury sedan markets with its Genesis and Equus sedans.

AMICI ITALIAN CAFE

As Downtown Milledgeville began its renaissance in the mid-90's, a few guys with big ideas decided to invest in this quickly rising college town and took over one of downtown's most historic buildings. In 1999 - Amici Italian Cafe opened its doors and has been a Milledgeville staple ever since. Over the last 13 years, Amici has become known around the southeast, for its award winning "New York style" Pizza, its closely guarded "Honey Hot" Wing recipe and its inventive promotions and ideas. Open seven days a week, Amici Milledgeville features a giant projector screen and multiple flat screens - always tuned to the best sporting events around the world, an upstairs private dining area for any occasion and the unique distinction of never charging a cover for live music despite their reputation for bringing in some of the top touring acts in the country. Located on the corner of Hancock and Wayne Streets in historic downtown Milledgeville, Amici has become synony-

7

mous with community involvement and civic pride. Recently, Amici was a finalist for “Small Business of the Year” in Baldwin County and has been the recipient of dozens of awards relating to their food, service and atmosphere. Amici is an Italian word that means “friends”, and those who come by to eat, drink or play, quickly realize that when you walk in the door – you become just that – a friend. Co-owners Jon Joiner, Jonathan “Bob” Ewing, Business Director Phillip Joiner and the rest of the team invite you to stop by any day of the week and experience one of the lake area’s most unique experiences.

OLD GOVERNOR’S MANSION

Completed in 1839, the Old Governor’s Mansion is one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival Architecture in the nation. Designed by noted architect Charles Clusky, and Irish immigrant, and built by Timothy Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, the Mansion looms over Milledgeville with its stately columns and imposing façade. Serving as the residence for Georgia’s chief executives for over thirty years, the Mansion’s history encompasses antebellum, Civil War, and early Reconstruction phases of the state’s history. Such noted state leaders as George Crawford, Howell Cobb, and Joseph E. Brown resided in the building and used it as a stage for speeches and also to introduce guests as national standing. During the Civil War, the Mansion was claimed as a “prize” in the “March to the Sea” when

General T. Sherman headquartered in the building on November 22, 1864. Following the war, Georgia’s seat of government was relocated to Atlanta, and the Mansion was abandoned. Given over to Georgia Norman & Industrial College (currently known as Georgia College & State University) in 1889, the Mansion served as the founding building of the institution and is the campus’ most treasured structure. Beginning in the late 1990s, an initiative was begun to return the Mansion to its antebellum splendor. Following five years of intensive historical, structural, and material research, the Old Governor’s Mansion began its long awaited historic restoration in November of 2001. The Old Governor’s Mansion now serves as a historic house museum, and was designated as a national historic Landmark in 1973. The Museum Store features unique gifts for men, women, and children. Come in and browse. Historical books and novels are featured, along with prints by local artists, jewelry, bath and body, candles, music boxes and children’s toys.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Andalusia is brought to life on many occasions in O’Connor’s published letters. In the 1950s Andalusia was a dairy farm operated by O’Connor’s mother Regina Cline O’Connor. 24 OLIVE FORGE

#

Approximately 360 varieties of herbs can be found at Olive Forge Herb Farm in display gardens and for sale (in season). Collecting, studying and propagating herbs have been our passions for more than 35 years. Both native and introduced plants find a loving home in a sunny bed or in the shade of pines, hollies and hardwoods. One of our goals is to find and propagate those varieties of herbs that will be favorable to our climate while developing gardening strategies to deal with the summer heat and humidity (both known to damage some herb varieties). Olive Forge Herb Farm is a licensed plant nursery. Our gift shop, the STILL ROOM…that special room of the 17th century manor used to keep herbs and seeds safe and dry…offers fragrant toiletries, candles and soaps, culinary and medicinal herbs, vinegar, herb salts, herb jellies and a variety of herb teas, all made on the premises, as well as handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items made by more than 30 local artists. We place much emphasis on the role herbs and nutri-

tion play in maintaining wellness and promoting healing and have published several books which are available in our shop. The nursery and gift shop at Olive Forge are open every Thursday through Saturday, 9-5. Tours and programs for groups, clubs or organizations can be arranged, Monday through Wednesday.
