Milledgeville, GA • Museum District OLD GOVERNOR’S MANSION & GIFT STORE Completed in 1839, the Old G o v e r n o r ’s Mansion is one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival Architecture in the nation. Designed by noted architect Charles Clusky, and Irish Immigrant, and built by Timothy Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, the Mansion looms over Milledgeville with its stately columns and imposing façade. Serving as the residence for Georgia’s chief executives for over thirty years, the Mansion’s history encompasses antebellum, Civil War, and early Reconstruction phases of the state’s history. Such noted state leaders as George Crawford, Howell Cobb, and Joseph E. Brown resided in the building and used it as a stage for speeches and also to introduce guests as national standing. During the Civil War, the Mansion was claimed as a “prize” in the “March to the Sea” when General T. Sherman headquartered in the building on November 22, 1864. Following the war, Georgia’s seat of government was relocated to Atlanta, and the Mansion was abandoned. Given over to Georgia Norman & Industrial College (currently known as Georgia College & State University) in 1889, the Mansion served as the founding building of the institution and is the campus’ most treasured structure. Beginning in the late 1990s, an initiative was begun to return the Mansion to its antebellum splendor. Following five years of intensive historical, structural, and material research, the Old Governor’s Mansion began its long awaited historic restoration in November of 2001. The Old Governor’s Mansion now serves as a historic house museum, and was designated as a national historic Landmark in 1973. The Museum Store features unique gifts for Men, Women, and children. Come in and browse. Historical books and novels are featured, along with prints by local artists, jewelry, bath and body, candles, music boxes and children’s toys.

These points are: organization, promotions, design, and economic restructuring. Using a dedicated Board of Directors, gracious volunteers, and a paid staff, Main Street is able to organize many different promotions, design assistance and strategies to boost economic restructuring in our community. The Deep Roots Festival brings many visitors to downtown businesses door step annually, while providing a great day of fun for everyone. This year, the promotional event will take place on October 22nd. Proceeds from the Deep Roots Festival provide Main Street with the ability to offer a 50/50 Façade Match Grant to businesses in the downtown area. Adhering to the design requirements of the Historic Preservation Commission, the business can improve the façade of the building. The Milledgeville Marketplace Farmers’ Market helps with the economic restructuring of downtown, by providing local farmers, avid gardeners, and others with a place to sell their products. LOCKERLY ARBORETUM is a private, nonprofit educational enterprise designed to enhance the cultural and aesthetic life of the Milledgeville area. Comprising approximately fifty acres, it is located just above the fall line. The topography of the area is rolling and uneven, typical of the Georgia Piedmont. Lockerly is a horticultural laboratory rather than a showplace garden. There is no charge to visit the arboretum grounds which feature both walking and driving trails. Beautiful Lockerly Hall was built circa 1839. The home was the center of a plantation originally called Rose Hill. Lockerly Hall is a microcosm of the finest plantation architecture of the Milledgeville area as well as the entire cotton belt of the Old South. Tours of Lockerly Hall are available by appointment for groups or for individuals on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Trolley Tours.

Milledgeville, GA OLIVE FORGE HERB FARM Approximately 360 varieties of herbs can be found at Olive Forge Herb Farm in display gardens and for sale (in season). Collecting, studying and propagating herbs have been our passions for more than 35 years. Both native and introduced plants find a loving home in a sunny bed or in the shade of pines, hollies and hardwoods. One of our goals is to find and propagate those varieties of herbs that will be favorable to our climate while developing gardening strategies to deal with the summer heat and humidity (both known to damage some herb varieties). Olive Forge Herb Farm is a licensed plant nursery. Our gift shop, the STILL ROOM…that special room of the 17th century manor used to keep herbs and seeds safe and dry…offers fragrant toiletries, candles and soaps, culinary and medicinal herbs, vinegar, herb salts, herb jellies and a variety of herb teas, all made on the premises, as well as handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items made by more than 30 local artists. We place much emphasis on the role herbs and nutrition play in maintaining wellness and promoting healing and have published several books which are available in our shop. The nursery and gift shop at Olive Forge are open every Thursday through Saturday, 9-5. Tours and programs for groups, clubs or organizations can be arranged, Monday through Wednesday. Olive Forge Herb Farm will host the 17th annual Holiday Open House later this year, December 3 & 4 from 10-4. It’s the only Sunday in the year that we are open. We’ll have lots of herbal goodies to sample (herb cookies, cakes, and hors d’oeuvre) and a holiday recipe handout sheet. There is always a huge pot of Darryl’s chili, some years spicier than others, and a big pot of mulled cider. Hope you can come! Don’t be misled by the Haddock mailing address, we are in west Baldwin County.

Greensboro THE YESTERDAY CAFE The Bickers & Goodwin building was destroyed by a tornado in 1999. This circa late 1800s building has since been restored to its former beauty and now houses The Yesterday Cafe, which relocated from Rutledge to Greensboro in 2005. The Yesterday Cafe is truly a family business. Teri Bragg and her family have been servicing delectable meals in their Cafe for over 15 years. Teri’s son, Chris and his wife, Katie, now operate the Cafe. Teri’s several other children contribute and support the restaurant, and the entire family excitedly anticipates the future participation of her many grandchildren. In the five years that the Yesterday cafe and the Bragg family have served Greensboro, they have admired the fellowship and kindness of the community. They are proud to contribute to the legacy that is preserved in the dozens of vintage community photographs and portraits that grace the walls of The Yesterday cafe.
